Don't think I have posted this pic, and after seeing some of the firearms here, I feel a little more than inadequate!

Got this last summer, and would love to get a Springfield Armory XD 9mm next.

This is a Smith and Wesson Sigma 9mm:

Stag 6H upper, Spike's Lower, DPMS LPK w/ tuned 3lb trigger, Burris PEPR and Bushnell 4-12x40 sitting on top. My first AR, went together pretty easy, can't wait to load 'er up and hit the range.

Turkish M38 Mauser. I was told it 'shot well', but the darn thing was so loaded up with cosmoline I'm surprised/skeptical it shot at all. There was so much gunk in the bolt I doubt the firing pin would have moved. Cleaned up real nice though.

Anybody ever used a detachable mag on a Mauser? The follower spring and floorplate were rusted pretty bad and probably need to be replaced. If I've got to buy new parts, I'm leaning in that direction just for something different.

Too bad about your state's poor laws, but nice upgrade bud! It's my understanding from various forums that the Sigma series are the weak point of S&W's lineup, kept around for price point. The "VE" or value-enhanced designation only came around after they were sued by Glock for design ripoff... anyway their M&P series gets great reviews but your Glock is a major step up IMHO. Love my G36...

Looks like a second-gen? Very nice.

Finally got myself an AR! So freakin excited right now. I really wanted a DPMS or Rock River but when I went into a sporting goods store today I saw this Armalite Arms and really liked the camo look so I decided to finally buy one.

ARs can be real finicky, some jam on the stuff other's handle it just fine. Buy a brick and try it out. You can always sell the rest if it doesn't work for you. Mine doesn't like the stuff but my buddy will bumpfire it all day long through his.

I'm thinking we are coming near the end of the ammo bubble, I'm thinking cases won't drop down to pre-rise prices but should settle in the $250 a case neighborhood. Sure, I'm talking out my ass but I'm still pretty sure I'm right. :D

BTW, GBF, that is a sweet looking Armalite you got yourself. :tu

Thanks Ratters. What attracted me to the gun was the camo, never really saw a stock one like it. When I bought it I bought 200 rounds of American Eagle ammo and put 60 rounds through it with no problem when I went to the range. today I picked up 100 rounds of Federal at Wal Mart and will be heading back out to the range tomorrow to put some more rounds through it. I am thinking I will order some PMC online once I run down my small supply and see how that goes.

recently i had matt build me a iwb/owb convertible holster for my 4" xd. Today i thought it would be a good day to try out the iwb part of it...that was until my wife reminded me that we had stuff to do which of course was just after i took the first mounting screw out of the owb attachments. I tried to put it back in with no luck but I didn't have time to really mess with it as my wife was walking out the door with my car keys. I sent matt a quick and confusing email with my problem and walked out the door. I get an email back from matt on my blackberry and we exchange 4 or so emails and then he asks me to call him.

I call matt and we discuss the problems i'm having and after a short conversation we figure out it's a problem with the mounting screw and that the IWB screws will fix the problem. I try that while on the phone with him and we got the holster fixed and i'm CCing and happy again. The problem ended up being a screw that wouldn't catch properly and while I insisted that it is not necessary for matt to do so, he insisted even more that he send me a replacement.

Matt and I have been emailing each other back and for a while now and I've always found matt to be knowledgeable and helpful as well as quick to respond to questions or concerns. I have absolutely no reservations about recommending http://www.invictuskydex.com/ to anyone who is looking for a holster

bought myself a sig sauer red dot sight for my AR-15 this weekend. When I installed in on the rail to my gun it seems like its a little low for my eye, it doesnt feel comfortable looking through it. Does anyone know how I might be able to make it sit higher up on the rail? Do they make something to heighten sights? Any help would be appreciated.

I believe LaRue and Daniel Defense make riser mounts. However, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the Sig dot sight is generally considered to be, well...poo. I'm not sure if the Larue or DD riser mounts would work anyway as they're meant for the Aimpoint mini. If you don't want to spend Aimpoint/Trijicon type coin, take a look at the offerings from Primary Arms. Their products have received good reviews on ARFCOM.

Brother, I owned a Defender .45 and it was a fantastic little handgun. I know the .40 is nice.....but you might wanna take the .45. Great pistol, and just as accurate as the 1911-A frame. Not sayin', just sayin'. I'm in the military and the Beretta 9mils we use suck compared to the old issue 1911 Colt .45. The Hogue grips are nice too.

Well, what are you using now? Most weapons can be concealed (yes even the full sized variety). Usually all it takes is a good holster. Crossbreed makes one helluva holster for most weapons carried. Also what caliber are you looking for? I would use no less than 9mm.

The girl smokes and has been itching to go shooting but due to lack of funding I haven't been able to afford .40 ammo. So what's your point?

Load first two chambers with shot shells for snakes, next three with .45LC for everything else.

I guess my mistake in mentioning the Judge was thinking that people would have the common sense to realize that the weapon can use two different cartridges (at the same time even!) and that the .410 shot is less than ideal for shooting a large mass.

When loaded intelligently and logically, it's great weapon.

reccomendations?Definitely a revolver because it will withstand the possible exposure to wet and dirt better than an auto. Super light weight and snub nose isn't really necessary because you don't need deep concealement. In fact depending on the places you go you may be able to wear it across the chest like some hunters do with their backup pistol. If you want this for defense against animals as well as people you should carry a revolver capable of at least .38/.357. You can go bigger but if you are not a gun enthusiast a higher caliber may not work as well for you all things considered.
If it was me I think I would look at a S&W 686 or 686+ in 4" or 6" configuration. Long barrel length is a good thing because it delivers the most possible power as well as longer sight radius for better accuracy in aiming situations. The .38/357 cal with the medium steel frame means a good power/kick ratio. The Ruger GP100 is a good choice too. That puts you over 2 lbs but with a good holster and belt that's not so bad. Get a holster made for the woods - maybe with a flap. It will keep the grit out.

Few criteria. No taurus. No ruger. Must be less than 20 ounces. 357 minimum. Not ultra snubnose. Black or blue preferred. It will be mostly concealed.

Might be tough to get all of those in one.

If you're willing to give a few ounces on the weight though...

BTW, the S&W J-frames you mentioned earlier are very good weapons.

Well, what are you using now? Most weapons can be concealed (yes even the full sized variety). Usually all it takes is a good holster. Crossbreed makes one helluva holster for most weapons carried. Also what caliber are you looking for? I would use no less than 9mm.

-Z

I've carried full-size concealed before, its not that I dislike it, I'm just going for something smaller on while on the motorcycle. I have plenty of holsters but I actually just bought a Lil Joes Motorcycle Vest with the built in gun pocket inside the vest. It holds my full size weapons fine but again I'm looking for something a bit smaller.

I've carried a S&W Model 60-15 .357 Mag, I've carried the Glock 26 and a Ruger P90. Not horribly excited w/ the S&W, I used Glock for a decent amount of time at work so I try to stay away from them when I'm able and the full size Ruger was just too big.

Avoid anything with the name Ruger on it... period.

Not based on quality, but principle.

What's the thoughts behind that Jordan?

My only logic is if we're talking 26 to 30 ounces, I'd just rather go with a G29 which preserves my muscle memory comparable to a G19. Which a Glock isn't going have an issue with dirt, dust, grime or water. That and 10mm is no slouch.

Kind of interesting though that the J frames fill a niche market with no other competition.

The Taurus Judge sounds interesting, but I refuse to support that company with my dollars.

No doubt or debate, the Glock is a great weapon, I don't need to be convinced of that. For some carry situations, I think a revolver, even though you give up a few rounds and maybe some weight, might be a better choice. Not even the Glock is infallible. Yes, a revolver a very old concept in the design. But, it frickin' works. It's simple, reliable and rugged. Fast, no. Sometimes though, simple and reliable trump magazine capacities and speed fire.

Off the top of my head, I think a S&W 640 Centennial .357 magnum weighs 32oz.

I could get under the 30oz limit by going to a 642 airweight, but, IIRC, .38+P is as much as it will handle per the manufacturer.

While one of them exceeds your weight restrictions, the other falls slightly short of your power demands, I would not have a problem with either of those for myself. I would not have a problem with their senior counterpart bodyguard models either, but I can't personally see where I would need single-action capability for this situation.

There are a few other .45/.410 revolvers on the market, The Judge just happens to be the most readily available. I haven't spent much time looking into them since they're illegal in the state I live in, maybe a local gunstore can help you with some of the other manufacturers.

I won't argue the revolver is the premier choice for this application (which is why I'm hunting for one), but all I was getting at is if weight was a wash between an auto and a revolver, I'll go with where my training lies.

I found on the S&W site, the M&P 360 model revolver.

3" barrel, .357, black and ~15 oz.

Only issue is it has a hammer, which wasn't a deal breaker, but weird that they don't offer a 3" hammerless model in black.

My everyday carry is the S&W Airweight 642 revolver with Crimson trace.

It fits perfectly in a Desantis Nemesis pocket holster in the cargo shorts I normally wear and you don't even notice it's there.

I keep Speer Gold dots short barrel rounds in it and feel very confident in its stopping power although I pray I never truly find out.

Sure a Glock carries more rounds but for my skinny frame it's too big to propery conceal and I live by the theory if I need more than 5 shots, I'm probably not making it home for dinner.

Had a Taurus 357 and found it painful to pracice with and tried a Kel Tec P11, which in my opinion is the biggest piece of junk gun in the world.

The fact that Taurus is made in Brazil should have made me run but my first divorce after 2 years to a Brazilian woman didn't stop me from marrying another one 7 years later. I'm a slow learner.

It would appear that we are not that far apart in our thinking, abeit a few differences. Now, after looking at the S&W page, it seems my memory of the weights of these weapons is not not accurate. Or I'm thinking of loaded weights, I don't know, but whatever it is, what I had in my head for weights was greater than what they are when unloaded.

Is sending the weapon out to a gunsmith to have the hammer bobbed an option for you?

Different application. Backpacking carry gun. .357 minimum.

My carry gun is a G19.

We're talking lightweight because ounces matter on the trail. Chest holster, slightly exposed and revolver because mags weigh a lot.

I have a guy local who could do it.

Though if he can't do it, I'm wondering if just buying an aftermarket bobbed hammer would be more ideal ($$$).

I hope this doesn't sound like I'm being a wise azz. But bobbing a revolver hammer is a pretty simple job. A nice file and some emery cloth and the required elbow grease.
One thing you can do is order a spare stock hammer to bob, install and use it. If its not what you want put the original back in.

If it was an AR-15 hammer, I'd do it in a heartbeat, but with complete inexperience in this sort(revolvers) of thing and the necessity for it to work 100% of the time if needed. It's worth the 30$ and change for someone to do it for me.

Yeah but even reloading it get expensive for this round and Alexander Arms hasn't helped the matter. Lapua Brass is all thats avail although its coming down in price, still near 85-90 bucks per 100. If you want a Competition Die set w/ bushings your also looking above 200 bucks...but the round has its merits.

Your WW1 1911 is in excellent condition. I would lean towards not shooting it given its potential value. Then again, the one thing I've learned most from my fellow cigar smokers is that you only live once. Try to enjoy life's finer things while you can; don't save them for a special occasion. Make the occasion special. I'm sure every time you take that beauty to the range it makes the occasion special.

Hey shooters, what would be an affordable, home protection pistol? Don't need a DE or anything, but there have been a few burglaries in our neighborhood lately, and I figure y'all are the ones to ask about this...

I'm no expert, but I bought this gun specifically for home protection. It was cheap enough, came with 2 clips and 2 more with a coupon. So I can now pump 60 rounds into the bad guys :)

I agree with the shotgun for home defense, a Mossberg 500 specifically for easy moving around.

As far as handguns go, I am from the revolver school and believe that less is better.

If it jams, squeeze again.

With the nerves and adrenaline involved with a defense situation, I am a big fan of Crimson Trace laser grips for any handgun to avoid missing as best as possible.

I'll agree with the short barrel pump action shotgun reccomendations, altough I would load with #6, because #6 generally won't go through two layers of drywall or won't have enough power left behind it to really damage anyone if it does. 00 buck will go though walls and people at close range.

OK, here goes my sales person schpeel. Go to a range with some buddies, or a take a class and learn how to shoot, I prefer taking a class. Once you learn your safety and fundamentals try out a few different guns and see what works best for you. All the firearms here that were mentioned are all good, but if you do not feel comfortable shooting one, what good does it do for you?

I've told this story before and it's worth mentioning again. I have seen two people walk into a gun store/range, both wanting to buy and rent glocks because of what they have seen and heard. They went to the range and tried a few different firearms; one ended up buying the Glock, the other a Sig.

Each person is going to be different. I'm a Sig guy, because I shoot better with them and they feel better in my hand. Do I own Glocks HELL YES, they are great firearms, but they don't feel good in my hand.

With all that said I use a Smith and Wesson 686 at home.

There are too many for safes. That's not all of them. The room/basement (old home) that they were in was secure and alarmed.

I keep a .38 snub, Moss 590, and Glock 22 by the bed for "just" those special occasions.

Yes. Lead was banned for waterfowl hunting, nation wide I think. If I remember correctly the argument for the ban in waterfowl hunting areas was that the birds would ingest the lead shot while feeding. Not a waterfowl hunter but I'm guessing that the ducks and geese feed off of the bottom of shallow waters, thats how they ingest it, then they suffer from lead poisoning.

But shooting at the range punching holes in paper or bowling pins, knocking over steel plates I don't see much harm to wildlife in that instance. The banning of lead in ammo, in my opinion, was just a way to make the cost of shooting sports prohibitive for some.

The argument to ban the lead sounds about like I remember it.

My comment wasn't about banning it for paper-punching (which is silly IMO), but rather a question based on how the article was written. The article made it sound as if there were no restrictions whatsoever on lead ammo in hunting use.

They, the anti lead crowd, ought to think about what they wish for. I didn't think about it until I read it later, but the non-lead ammo would be less effective in hunting, and a danger to law enforcement. The non-lead ammo would have much more penetration. In hunting the bullets would go through the animal, leaving it wounded, instead of expanding and delivering all the energy for a quick kill. The extra penetration in relation to law enforcement might make some body armor ineffective/useless.

Last night was the night I hoped would never come; the first time I drew my firearm in self defense.

A family across the street has had numerous complaints about their aggressive pitbull who stays chained in the backyard in the Florida heat.

At 9pm I was walking my 8 pound Shih Tzu and talking to my next door neighbor when the pitbull charged across the street, growling and showing his teeth. he took my dog in his mouth, flung it to the side and pinned my neighbor against his garge and continued to bark and growl.

About the time I drew my firearm, the neighbor, who is handicapped, made it across the street and was able to pull the dog off.

My dog seemed ok but the next door neighbor called the police and animal control.

After filling out a report with my side of the story, it was determined that I would have been justified to take, "one clean shot" once the dog crossed the street onto my property.

Thankfully, it ended without a shot and the pitbulls owner recived a fine.

Wow! ^^ One breed of dog that I will never understand. I have no use for them. Glad to hear your dog is ok. Tough call to make when you really want to TCB.

I live in a neighborhood where we have a leash law statewide. People seem to have a real problem and just let their dogs roam. It's annoying when your dogs are on a leash while others are tauting yours and being a nuisance. Keep telling myself to get pepper spray but I think it will only cause friction between me and the owners.

Totally agree. That was a big part of my discussion with the animal control officer. This poor dog has been chained all summer in the back yard and hopefully will get some relief after the owner get sited for cruelty.

I've also seen the owner smack him on the head in an apparant attempt to "train" him.

Sad situation all around but definitely on the radar at this point.

Well I'm excited to share some good news with y'all: I'm the new proud owner of a Ruger LCP .380. :tu The coolest part: I won this gun through a promotion that Impact Guns held! Posted some pics, with its Hornady "Critical Defense" 90 grain rounds and pocket holster. Only been able to shoot the tiny thing once but there were no FTF/FTE problems with the cheap range ammo. Need a cheaper place to shoot around Gainesville though. I know little about the .380, I usually carry a .45. Are these little 90 grainers viable rounds for defense or should I keep it in a BUG capacity? I was halfway toying with the idea of trading it for a SP101 .357 but I like the way it just rides so invisibly in the pocket.
Y'all have a great Sunday, looking forward to seeing many of you at EPIC.

I have a question for the fellers. A guy brings in an old Colt 45 new service revolver with sweet old ivory
steer head grips today, looks like a model 1917 or even earlier, and we have been webbing it up trying to
get a relative value. I will post pics, but while I get that into gear, anyone know it's general value.
I don't want to join a gun forum, lol. Sorry, too, these are video caps

Looks sweet OLS, for a quick check you can search Gunbroker.com to see what they're going for. Looks like they vary greatly by condition.

You should look into building one. You can be into a basic A3 for less than $700.

Thinking of picking up a Mosin-Nagant... Anyone have any experience with these? Know which model is better? Also, most info I find on these say they use a 7.62mm x 54mm, can the similar AK 7.62mm x 39mm be used with the Mosin, or vice versa?

No dice, Frank, 2 different rounds. The best Nagants were the ones from Finland, but they're pretty thin on the ground these days. Avoid the carbines... the recoil is just plain brutal, and they are no fun to shoot.

Martel is right. Often the Mosin ammo is referred to as 7.62x54R
