I've got me one of those. Two things -1) I could hide it in a matchbook with no problems. 2) I can get that to hit a pretty small pattern at a reasonable distance. Liking your choice.

You need to remove old one and replace with these but easy and quick to do.

With grandchildren, can't simply leave it loaded in a drawer for home protection.
Figured this will do the trick in giving me quickest access possible while maintaining total safety for grandkids.

Does it feel secure or can a creative kid pry it with a screwdriver?
I Really like the idea of biometrics on it as opposed to combinations.

Agree.
Love the idea of the top opening with biometric.
Glad to hear it is strong.
Prefer that route in my large nightable drawer, out of sight but accessible.
Thanks.
On my hit list for next month.
You think I can fit a Sigma 9mm or a Glock 40 in this one?

Nobody is prying that open with a screwdriver.
The CWP is taking like 2 weeks to get in Fla as opposed to the 4 months plus when I got mine about 5 years ago.
I'd also think about a talk with the grandkids at some point explaining the dangers of a gun and the importance of never going near them without an adult. I did that with my little one.

My 38 Smith looks like the ugly step child to a lot of these fancy new semi autos, but I feel so positive that it will work if needed, I wouldn't trade it for anything. The most compelling reason for owning it is the fact that with my small frame it is barely noticeable in hot Florida weather in my cargo shorts, which means it's something I don't leave in the safe at home because it's a hassle to carry.
I've been through the spectrum of handguns from Kel Tecs to Glocks and find this to be the perfect conceal weapon.

Looking for some recommendations for sights/optics for my first AR15. Would love to buy a red dot/holographic but don't really have the $400+ for an Eotec or Aimpoint, are the cheaper knockoffs any good or would I just be wasting money? As far as iron sights, are the Magpul BUIS sights good enough for primary sights or should I be looking for something with a little for quality? Going to be using the AR mainly as a range toy and maybe for HD if that matters. Thanks.

Only thing i can think of is depending on how tight the boot is to the calf, you could use an ankle holster. If anything ankle carry should be enhanced by the boot holding the gun even better.

Just ordered a Savage 10FPRS .308 threaded barrel
http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/62_974/products_id/70992/Savage+10FPSR+LE+308+THREADED+BBL
But now I need a scope, I'm looking for recommendations. I have up to 450 to spend on it, it would be used primarily for target shooting and hopefully some hog/deer hunting, no long range competition shooting or anything. I can't really see myself shooting over 500 yards (not at first anyway).
I am considering this, http://www.midwayusa.com/product/950843/bushnell-elite-3200-tactical-rifle-scope-10x-40mm-1-10-mil-adjustments-mil-dot-reticle-matte?cm_cat=Cart&cm_pla=ProductDesc
I always hear about spending the cost of the rifle on glass, or twice the cost, etc.
This is "cheap" but has great reviews, I'm just curious if spending the whole 450 would result in a significantly better scope or pissing money away.
Also, other than ammo, if there are any other must have accessories let me know.
Thanks!

Do you have local Cabelas? They usually have cases full of scopes, go window shopping! My buddy recently had his hart set on a Redfield- with a little shopping around found it for almost a $100 less! But Cabelas is were I would start shopping, pick em up and examine the reticle styles.

we have one about an hour up the road, I'll be stopping there on friday, but I guess my main issue is, what makes a scope good? What features, at a minimum, do I need for 100-200 yard target shooting and up to maybe 300 yard hunting medium game?
The power (3x9) / size of the objective / type of reticle / construction/ brand. (would prolly stay with a 3x9)
Redfields are american made, I have taken apart some pretty looking chinese knock-offs but there internal construction was poor, wouldnt have installed them on a BB gun!

OK... So I have the itch again and I am torn... I know these are two completely different guns but I am having a hard time deciding on what to pull the trigger on... FN 5.7 or the FN-P Tactical in .45ACP. Either one will have a threaded barrel and a can in the near future but I am having a hard time deciding. I am currently sitting on 2 .45's and love the round but if I get the 5.7 it will be just another toy I have to stock up on ammo for... BAH! I need to win the lotto.

Also, resolution is very important at distance. Think of it as how sharp it can focus. The more precise the lens is ground and the better the coating is, the sharper the image will be. How well it is put together too. This costs more money to make.
300 yards may not be that far to worry about resolution much.

I held the FN 5.7 and I did not like the size of the gun, just ridiculously huge.
The USP Compact Tactical was much more to my liking. Someday I'll have to get one and toss a can on it.
I too really like the .45 round.
That said If you are considering both I would see if you can't find a gun shop with a range so you can shoot both of them and let that decide.

I have shot both and hold under a 3inch pattern at 35 feet. The FN funs are just large in general, the FN-P is not a concealed carry weapon by any means but it will certainly put the glocks to the test as far as durability and dependability.

I have an LC9, that I acquired recently. Make sure you clean it when you first get it, it has a ton of grease inside and wont fire if properly if you don't. It's accurate, but has a super long triggerpull, I'm looking into replacing the trigger. In my opinion the lasermax is a waste, get the regular model and buy a sweet carry rig. I had a bodyguard which has a built in laser and just didn't think I would use it in a defensive situation. Just one extra step when its not really needed. YMMV

I too wanted the Ruger, but absolutely hated the long trigger pull. I ended up with the Kahr CM9 and love it. If you are thinking about the PM9, I would encourage you to study the differences in features and prices. I just couldn't personally justify the higher cost of the PM9, but some do and are very happy. My CM9 is my CCW and I love it as I said. I love the trigger and find it very accurate for the size of the weapon. Good luck. Steve

I'd rather have a lighter grain for targets cause all it has to do is hit.

shouldn't it be the other way around?
I'd rather have a lighter grain for targets cause all it has to do is hit.
The heavier grain would be better for varmits because it will have more energy.
The lighter bullets tend to have a much higher velocity making them shoot a bit flatter, also with the higher velocity is the almost explosive type fragmentation when they hit small varmints. One downside with the lighter bullets is that wind affects them more.
For punching holes in paper it does't matter all that much, at least to me.

Yes, but 20 grains difference for a 22, your not going to notice. Also, your not going to be shooting real far with a 22 to be concerned about bullet drop.
also with the higher velocity is the almost explosive type fragmentation when they hit small varmints.
Depends on what type of bullet your shooting. Hollow points yes, soft points, not so much.
One downside with the lighter bullets is that wind affects them more.
.22 is so small, wind will affect them both about the same really.
For punching holes in paper it does't matter all that much, at least to me.
Think of shooting a deer with a 270 and then shooting prairie dogs with a 270.
Heavier bullet for the deer, lighter bullet for the prairie dog. No need to overkill a prairie dog and waste the extra lead and powder.
Same goes for 22 in theory........
I reload all my ammo..................lots of time to play and study :D

Check out the Cw9 and the CM9. Both can be had from buds gun shop or cheaper than dirt for about $325-$400 shipped to your local FFL. :tu
Shot my friends CW9 and loved it.

I LOVE the look of the LC9, but that trigger pull is just sooo long. I've been looking at both Kahr's lately and am going to the local shop tomorrow to feel them out. I really like what I've read about the PM9 and the CW9 seems like a great lesser expensive version. Looking forward to a little more research tomorrow.
Thanks for the advice gentlemen.

Hey. the CM9 is a cheaper PM9. Lil less milling, some MIM parts and regular rifling not polygonal rifling. The CW9 is bigger than the CM9 and PM9. Still a smaller gun tho.

I have a question for the AR gurus. I'm going to start piecing one together soon, but am undecided on which stripped lower to begin with, I've narrowed it down to 3
Stag (can get locally for a good price)
Palmetto State (available online, would be about even to the Stag after FFL fee)
Spikes (4-6 week wait time, bout the same price after fees)
I've read good things about all of them, I'm leaning towards the Stag since it's local-ish, any input?

I would say PSA but that's just me. No personal experience, just heard alot of good things about PSA in the forums. Remember, if you buy the lower at your local dealer u gotta pay tax on it too. Go with the cheapest :tu

The SS will be more wear resistant and rust won't be as big of a concern. Though as long as you apply a thin layer of oil over the parkerized finish rust won't be a big concern, but it will still wear more.
I'd just go with what you think looks better.

Well right now it seems from what I've read everyone likes the Noveske barrels. If you get the SBR 8" it's supposed to be one of the best on the market.
I just get annoyed that most of the barrels right now for the .300 blackout are stainless.
But there are others out there, just wondering if by some odd chance anyone has tried the AAC/Wilson Combat ones or any other .300 blackout barrels. Possibly a good one that comes in black and not stainless.

I find myself asking the same question :sh.
I think the thing that drew me towards the 300 was the compatibility of all my mags and lowers, keeping the ar-15 profile versus going .308 ar-10 with all new mags. Although I have both a Noveske N-6 and LMT 308 sitting in peices(I have no idea why I have both). The cost of 300blk ammo is what was super enticing. just about 1/2 the cost of .308 packing almost the same punch.

How are the trigger guard laser systems? I haven't had the opportunity to use one yet. I am not much of an advocate for the tactical nonsense on weapons. I understand they have their place but the average Joe has no need for anything beyond irons, if they depend on the red dot to hit their target they should probably lock that weapon up until they can hit the range.

I've not 100% decided on the LC9 or the LC9-LM (laser). I understand totally your thoughts on being able to hit a target with the sights alone, no doubt very important. My thought on the laser is simply it's a nice feature to have. The actuation on this laser is not done by trigger but rather a button forward of the trigger guard, so you actually have to bring your finger forward, depress the button then bring your finger back inside the guard. Way to much time wasted in a combat situation, but yet I don't want a trigger actuated laser either as I don't always want it on. My thought is, simple and stupid as it may be that say in your home, someone breaks in, it may be handy to have that laser on a wall for them to see from upstairs or a different room, maybe have them rethink being in my home seeing that red dot and avoid violence if possible. Again, may never happen or play out that way, but it's just my thought. Plus, it may be fun at the range.
Any advice on best ammo for practice and combat situations?

Ammo for the range I always recommend whats cheap for shooting in mass and sighting in the firearm. I always end the day with a mag of my carry ammo just to ensure they are firing well within the range I expect the bullet to hit. As far as carry ammo I am a bit of a fan boy for the Hornady Critical Defense. I have seen many hollow points fold instead of expand because of the materials they had to pass through (heavy winter jackets vs t-shirts) The H-CD ammo has a polymer tip which forces the ammunition to expand regardless of what it is passing through. The 9mm with this ammo has amazing stopping potential, I know a lot of people knock the 9mm's stopping power but with the right ammo it is 100% effective with center mass hits. Home defense on the cheap (FMJ's) are not only ineffective but extremely dangerous due to travel through walls and invaders. 9mm FMJ will pass right through someone with a finger sized exit wound, if the hollow point actually passes through with a shoulder shot the exit wound will be much larger and more effective.

+1 to all of this. 9mm is plenty unless you need the extra power to shoot through a leather jacket, layer of Polo or Drakkar cologne, 3 gold chains, a cable knit 'Boss' sweater, an under shirt and then probably a wife beat under it all. :D. I'd rather have the cheaper 9mm to practice with. I figure under duress, I'd only land 6/10 shots. I feel satisfied that 6 shots will damn do it. :2, of course.
I sold (2) of .45s and my .40. Still have a Taurus .45 I am trying to get rid of. I am streamlining to 9mm in everything except 1 carry gun (.380) and .357 that I do not have yet. All the 9mm have H-CD ammo and you are right. It is nasty.

I won't ever streamline my collection because when the SHTF and the Zombies come I need something for each caliber because ammo will become both VERY expensive and scarce :P at least this is how I justify buying new and interesting toys.

Plus its nice being able to take my trunk of firearms to the range and letting new shooters or people who are in the market for a firearm let a few rounds down range without having to drop a mint at the rentals. I have met some very cool people at the range and since my injury I have been kicking around the idea of becoming a firearms instructor so its good experience dealing with difference types of learners.

Lasers not only provide very good feedback as a training tool, helping muscle memory training and trigger control/grip, but can also have great value as aid to shooting under actual shooting conditions. (high stress/elevated heartbeat/high adrenaline)
An Average Joe is actually the BEST candidate for having a "nonsense" tool like a laser, especially when these days, they take up so little real estate and have some very ergonomic options for switching. As to the last sentence, how about being in a very scary situation with a couple of bullets in you taking you out of action and a loved one helping defend you or your family? (That person not being as highly trained and skillful in the martial arts as yourself, of course.) While I think that general competency in firearms is an admirable thing for everyone, being able to tell a person who is not as much of a "Warrior" to "take a deep breath, put the red dot on his chest and press the trigger" may just save your life and theirs.
I do not have any lasers on any of my firearms, but I would never pooh pooh anyone with one as an excuse to belittle their "Average Joe-ness."
OPTIONS are good.

If you want a 1911 for range use, almost any will do. If it's something you want for your own protection. You need to spend some money to get into a descent self defense pistol, (Speaking about 1911's). For 5 to 6 hundred dollars you can get into a glock or XD
For a defensive piece, I'd start looking at the Springfield Loaded series, STI makes some good guns, Les Baer, Dan Wesson Valor series, Smith & Wesson(Even with the external extractor):D
1911's are fickle guns, they need to be put together well to function, and be maintained to a high level. Were I can shoot 10k rounds through my glock and never clean it, and then throw it in the floor of my truck and know I can use it in an instant.
I would never treat my 1911 like that. I clean it once a week, whether I shoot it or not. And I always make sure the parts are functioning correctly. It's my carry weapon, so I have to trust my life to it.
1911's are sweet, but take some time to become proficient with. And you must be willing to invest some time to learning the safe carry and handling of a single action semi-auto. And the care and maintenance of this weapon.
But they are sweet....

It picks up quite a bit of lint off clothing and dust just from being concealed carried. Also, little bits of leather get on to it from the holster. It is also stainless steel, so I like to wipe it down with oil since it rest against my skin. Especially in the summer when you sweat more.
1911's are the pickiest pistol about being clean and lubed. So I figure better safe than sorry since I trust my life to it.

It's not hard to maintain. It takes 30 mins out of my life to keep it in top shape.
The 1911's sole purpose is as a combat weapon. It was designed for military use. A well built, well maintained 1911 is as reliable as they come. And is one of the most accurate pistols out there. It also is very safe to carry in Condition 1, due to the design of the safeties.
It carries concealed better than any other, fits the hand like a glove, has a natural point of aim, trigger pull is the same on every shot, so no learning Double action pull-Single action pull
For precision CQB shooting all the SOC units use 1911's, so they are reliable under combat conditions.
Here is a good website about the 1911. It's run by Hilton Yam, he is a premier 1911 builder and a full time Police officer and SWAT member

That's the key right there. Properly built
You see people with a lot more issues with 1911's. Most are ammo or magazine related I would say
I don't really mean fickle, but you know, Most 1911's are hand fitted, so whoever does the work really needs to be on the ball, or you can run into problems real quick

I think the fact that there are SO MANY diff manufacturers of mag and 1911s is the problem. I think once you find the brand/model that works best in your gun then you are golden. Hell, my $450 AC2 made in the Philippines runs fantastic :tu

http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa68/mtb996/guns/IMAG0285-1.jpg
i think 1911's are like many other guns, some are better than others. The real problem is that its hard to mfg a cheap 1911 reliably. the design lends itself to some fitting and that is not cheap. Additionally, as mentioned above, magazines are a big potential issue. even my Dan Wesson mags will not lock the slide back (I'v sent many back to DW and they're all the same). But, with Wilson mags, my Vbob will eat any type of ammo and I've only had one failure in >>3k rounds.
I also have a Springfield Loaded and it was a huge POS out of the box. gritty trigger, sharp edges, several FTEs, etc. I sent it back to Springfield and now it is spectacular: trigger job, melding, feed ramp polishing, etc. Kind of annoyed I had to send it for warranty work, but Springfield was great to deal with and my gun is almost as good as the DW for half the price.

Your best bet would be to research the requirements for a CCW in your state, also stop by a court house or a police precinct and they can generally point you in the right direction.

I have one, it depends on what town you live in.The first thing to do is inquire at your local police station about it. Its completely at the discretion of the chief of police in your town. It was no problem in my town, but the next town over will not issue you one period. Nothing you can do about it. You have to take a pistol course (full day class around $100) then apply at the police station. Thats another $100 and anywhere from 1 month to whenever they feel like getting back to you! You have to have a bunch of background checks done, and they will find anything you've done so be honest on the application. after you pass all that the Chief has the final say, and if he doesn't like the shirt you're wearing he can say no. The laws are very vague and made that way to discourage people. Good luck and welcome to the Peoples Republic of Mass!!!

What made you choose that over another gun? Like say the Kahr PM9? I am looking into getting my CC and kind of want to get the gun first and throw some rounds through it first, but am being real slow about it as it is pretty back burner right now...

My Great Aunt was in town a couple of days and she said she had something to give me. It was a WWI Colt .45 1911. I did a little research and it looks like it was made in 1916 by the s/n. My Great Uncle passed away several years ago and she said that she thought that he would want it to stay in the family. Everything seems to be original on it except the grip on one side has been replaced. I was very suprised and very excited to give this gun a new home.
That is a neat piece. I might have extra colt grips of that vintage, I will look.

I am looking at getting my first semi-automatic (I have only played with revolvers) and I have been looking at 1911s. I have found one that seems to be customizable, SS and pretty close to my price range. Does anyone know anything about the Umarex Regent R200s 1911 (http://regentarms.com/products/models/r200s.html)?
I have seen a couple of reviews and everything seems to be positive. I have yet to find anything negative but it is a pretty recent release which may be why. Any info or feedback would be appreciated. :tu

Remington has a newer 1911 out that can be had for under $600 at a gun show around here. I would put alot more faith in Remington than a brand ive never heard of.
Also look up Rock island Armory, damn good pistol for the money. Basic pistol can be found for $425 NIB.

Under 600.
Look at the Rock Islands. Philippines made, decent quality, customizable, a few quirks here and there, but a good platform to start with, at good pricing. They do an odd sight cut, but there are good sights available for them.

Regent 1911 can be had for aprox $329 it is well made pistol, made in Turkey by the same factory building Benelli's. My only gripe with the Remington R1 is it was supposed to be a faithful reproduction of the original 1911 just like the Springfield, they get it 98% correct and they screw up the slide marking etc !!! We have been making 1911 for over a 100 years and with modern forgings and CNC equipment a low price tag doesn't make it any less reliable then my Colts! With proper break-in some rounds down range I would trust any of the sub $500 1911's.

Well, in 9 hours and 50 minutes, I get to pick up my new Ruger SR9c! I can't even tell you how freakin' excited I am. However, my daughter (who is married with children) is VERY concerned about having a gun in our house (although her husband has a 9mm as well...odd.) So, I've collected watches over the years, mainly Invicta and have several Invicta watch cases that I thought I could convert to ammo and gun safes. They are made of a high impact polycarbonate with foam linings slotted to protect either 3 or eight watches. The 3 slot cases I think will work wonderfully for housing the guns and ammo at home and also for transportation to the range.
Here's the outside of the Invicta watch case:
http://i817.photobucket.com/albums/zz91/Volusianator1/Gun%20Stuff/InvictaCaseOutside.jpg
Here's the inside with watches:
http://i817.photobucket.com/albums/zz91/Volusianator1/Gun%20Stuff/CaseInsideWatches.jpg
Removing the foam I can get two rows across and three rows up/down and stack them three high for a total of 900 round capacity. Or, I could install new foam and slot them out to fit 10 boxes of 50 standing up on edge with each box having it's own slot, this seems like a much more reasonable option as the bullets would never tumble around:

http://i817.photobucket.com/albums/zz91/Volusianator1/Gun%20Stuff/BulletsII.jpg
I would then of course use a second box, add new foam and make an exact cutout for the Ruger, extra clips and other accessories. That way I have both gun and ammo stored in separate "safes" and both are capable of putting two locks on each, L & R on front.
Hopefully this will put her mind at ease.

First 250 rounds with the Ruger SR9c
WOW! I truly have nothing for comparison so I'm going to be a little biased.
GUN HOME
I got my cleaning supplies out, a soft pad and started to disassemble the gun, I had it taken down in just under a minute, VERY simple procedure. I then proceeded to clean the entire gun, maybe a little more thoroughly than I needed to but it seems from what I've read, there's a lot of stuff on this gun from the factory, so I made sure to do a good job. I used a combination of Gunzilla and Hoppe's #9 for cleaning, Gunzilla for lubrication along with Mobile 1 15-w50 applied with a toothpick to the slide rails.
I put a couple snap caps in the mag and went to the living room for a little practice getting used to the feel of the safety, trigger and operations of the gun in regard to the slide, slide lock and mag release. After about a half hour of that, I decided to head to my cousins house for a little shooting.
"RANGE" (Cousins house)
My cousin Gabriel has a nice home out in the country with his own shooting range. He was not home yet, planned on being there in about an hour so I just got started. I forgot to buy some targets, so I brought paper plates along, noting drawn on them, just white. I tapped them to the burn barrel, paced off 21' and laid a log down for my shooting line. I loaded the 10 round clip in the gun, put on my glasses and ear electronic ear muffs (from the woodshop), walked to the log and turned the safety off. Bang, first shot in the flat surface of the plate, not touching the ribbed outer edge, so within an 8" circle, the remaining 9 rounds all landed in the same area, mostly lower to mid height all centered or left of center.
The second 17 round clip, 13 in the center area and 4 in the ribbed area. I shot 8 clips before I missed the plate, not to bad I was thinking for someone who's only fired a semi-automatic pistol once and not in a couple years. I hit 10/10 right handed only, I hit 10/10 left handed only.
Then Gabe comes home, he's a County Sheriff where I live and he set up another target at 21 feet and then one at 75 feet. His dept practices and qualifies their officers at 75'. I hit 6/10 on my first try at 75', two in the bull which at that range was a 6" circle and the other 4 just on the paper. After that, we did a kneeling shot at the target on the burn barrel, 5 shots, run 20" to my truck, kneel down along the side and take 5 shots at the second 21" target, then ran up range and fired 5 shots at the 75 yard target. Gotta admit, that was kinda fun.
Over all I shot 250 rounds through the gun with not one misfire or jam, the gun worked flawlessly and felt very comfortable. I also shot Gabes Glock .40 and his S&W 1911 .45, both of which I shot very well and were awesome guns. Not so much a fan of the Glock with no safety, but that's just me and my Dad for decades telling me, "don't you ever take that safety off until you're ready to pull the trigger." I felt like crap when I got home, so I had some supper, hit the shower and went to bed. I'll clean the gun when I get home tonight and look for any shavings from the slide and frame getting used to each other.
All things being considered, I'm VERY happy with my purchase. I also love my Upula mag loader, whoa, that things makes loading just to freakin' easy. I will get a couple more clips in the future, but for now, I'm just on cloud 9mm with my new gun!
