I watched some ar15 builds on youtube and it seems easy enough. Hardest part for me will be not losing the springs and pins haha. If I don't build me own I have my eyes set on the m&p 15-T. Otherwise from what I've heard and understand (correct me if I'm wrong) is the lower can be made of cheaper parts but the upper is what really matters? I would definitely stick with bigger name brand parts and if I build it, it won't be a cheap. But if I was to save money would it be on the lower?

Picked up a used Kel Tec Sub 2k Glock 17 model with three mags. Gonna take it out and give it a run this weekend. Now if I can only find the elusive PMR-30 by obession with Kel Tec will be over........for now.

Ok, the more I think about my trigger options the more I'm not sure which direction to go. Which one of these options would you go with?

1. ALG Milspec trigger + misc lpk + KNS antiroll pins + JP Springs ($130)
2. Spikes enhanced LPK ($200)
3. Misc lpk + Geissele SSA + KNS antiroll pins ($250)

I'm a fan of a Bill Springfield's trigger work: http://www.triggerwork.net/arparts.html

Depending on pull weight preference (2.5, 3, or 4 lbs) it'll run you $89-109 for the trigger group parts. I've got the 2.5 lb group on a target gun and I love it, don't think you can come anywhere close to this without doubling the price.

...so to add another bench with all the tools might be too much.

I've built three AR lowers on my kitchen island, you don't need a bench. If I remember right, the only tools necessary are a few punches, a hammer, an AR-15 armorer's wrench, a screwdriver or hex wrench (depending on grip choice), and a block of wood. The last one only took an hour. You're right about the springs. Not a bad idea to buy an extra detent pin & spring, or two or three. If you have to buy it after your parts kit, paying $8 shipping on a $2 part will drive you mad, but it's not so bad if it's all together.

You won't really save much money building a lower, maybe $100 at best (full disclosure - it's been at least 6 months since I checked prices). What you will get is the opportunity to build exactly what you want. No sense buying a basic lower and then swapping out the grip, stock, trigger, etc. Build it yourself and you're not buying parts you won't use.

If you're in one of the soon-to-be 'ban states', make sure you at least get your stripped lower ASAP.

Yea the tools are very minimal and I thought you would need a lot more. If I build my own I'm definitely going to build exactly how I want. Some of the premade upper kits though don't look too bad and are exactly what I want. I'm thinking 1-8" turn with a 16" barrel definitely want rails too.

I put this together in about 30min yesterday using a screw driver, adjustable pliers, and a castle nut wrench. Could have finished faster but I was watching the NBA playoffs. This was only the 2nd lower I put together

I priced out a rough build and it came out to about 1200. But with any diy build you always figure extra so I'm thinking 13-1500. Which also happens to be how much a m&p 15t would be.. roughly maybe a little less.

Don't have a 23 but have carried a Glock for 10 years, that is about an average price for a used one, if its new jump on it, can't go wrong with Glock for a reliable gun.

I have a 23. Nice little gun. I did use it for concealed carry until I moved out of Colorado.

My advice, if you haven't done so yet, is head to your gun store and hold a 23 in your hands. Make sure it fits and feels good in your hands, both of them if this going to be your CC. Also, as you know its a .40 which can be a bit snappy in this size but I dig it. I love my Glocks but they fit my hands well. My buddy only shoots Sigs, cause they fit his hands better. Calls my Glocks plastic toys. :sl

Lots of 3rd party accessories and parts galore for Glocks. Easy to work on/clean and they flat shoot everything I have put through them. They still shoot when dirty too. .40 ammo isn't the cheapest but lots of it out there. Easy to reload too.

$400 seems like a good price to me, especially if it comes with a couple of mags, etc. Unless the person has upgraded, it will most likely come with 2 mags and a lock. If you could shoot it prior then that would be best. It's a very solid weapon and I trusted it daily. I like the power of .40 and magazine capacity is nice. You might want to research what generation it is. Not a huge deal but nice to know.

Yea, I'd jump on it. I just bought one about a month ago (3rd Gen), they are hard to find in my area right now. Couldn't find a 4th Gen. New ones are going around mid 500's if IIRC.

That's actually a good price when you think if the FFL transfer fee you'd have to pay if you order one from online. Minimum would be $15.

Went and shot the sporting clays course today with the new shotgun. Worked like crap. No way my aim is that bad. :D

Actually, it performed really, really good. I'm hooked. Stopped by a local store afterwards and was able to score 10 boxes of shells for $5.50/box.

Love that gun.
One thing I would like to point out that may or may not be a problem, depending on how you intend to carry.
I am a fan of the Gen 4 as like the subtle changes on my 21 from the Gen 3.
However, when I was shopping for a concealed .40 (changed my mind and ended up with a Shield 9), I was bent on getting the 27 until the salesman asked me to try to conceal it. When I did, I realized what he was trying to point out is how that Gen 4 grip irritates the crap out of your skin as those little grip bumps rub on your skin.
Within seconds, I had an annoying rash.
May or may not be a problem for you but thought I would give you a heads up.
However, regardless, awesome gun and congrats!

Good point Carlos, I forgot all about the tearing up of skin and shirts. I have a 17 RTF and although I didn't conceal that one, it rubbed holes into my work shirts.

You mean black ash/dirt inside the primer pocket? If you got a reloading kit, it probably came with a primer pocket cleaner. You can use that to make it a bit better. You're really just making sure there's nothing in there that would prevent the primer from seating fully - i.e. fairly significant buildup.

For what it's worth, I clean the pockets for my rifle brass, but not pistol.

Thanks for the info! The brass has only been shot once and I cleaned them with the primers still in to prevent media in the primer pockets. They all look decently clean in there.

I fully understand the importance for gun safety amd fully respect it. I triple check my pistol to make sure its unloaded and no mag whenever I handle it then check it again. Until I fire my pistol the chamber safety flag is in it and I don't keep any mags loaded ever until I get to the range.

With that said.. does anyone have that friend who never has fired a gun but feels the need to preach safety to you and reminds you every chance they get even though you never bring a gun around them? I feel like they try to tell me how to safely use my own gun. I appreciate friendly reminders like someone double checking if I have eyes and ears, or asking if my gun is unloaded before we pack up. I guess it makes me feel like a child or a kid being told to never take candy from a stranger.

/endrant

Edit: I don't tale safety for granted but this friend is overly preaching to me about it. He isn't anti gun either and I pride myself on how safe I am with firearms. I've been in the cub scouts and boy scouts and was taught gun safety at a young age. Point of this edit was hoping to avoid people thinking I'm not safe with firearms and/or don't take safety seriously.

Nice Glock, Fordman. I have a G26 that I carry in my car. Shoots ev-er-y-thing that I put through it. I bought it used and after a quick wipe down, loaded at least 4 different types of ammo. We through 200+ rounds. Not a single hiccup. They are ugly as homemade sin and not terribly comfortable to hold, but they always go bang.

Just ordered my lee turret press and a lee 9mm 4set of dies. I've been reading my hornady 9th edition reloading book as well as doing my research on the forums for loads. Got my winchester wsf, cci #500 primers and hornady 124gr bullets and about 450 polished and cleaned cases!

Also got my dpms upper and lower and have my forward assist installed. Next on the list is a lower parts kit and stock :).

Carlos..... I have NOT shot the Sig. Last 9mm I've shot was the new Ruger sub-compact I got for my wife late last year. My daughter and her beau have matching S&W .40 and .22's. I've mainly been shooting an older Browning .380 and an undercover Charter Arms .38 lately. Really only grabbed the 9 mm because it was a good deal, from an individual I've known for years. I picked up half a dozen boxes of target ammo and a nylon holster for it today (holster that has place for the extra clip). Have to look at a couple of houses this afternoon, so it'll be tomorrow before I get to run some shots thru it. I do know that the gun gets good reviews (from what I've read), so I expect it to preform well. I know the .22 and the .40 of my daughter and her boyfriend are very accurate shooters.

Looks so similar in the grip to the Sigma that I first thought it replaced it.
Enjoy in good health.

Carlos I thought they did replace the Sigma? Something about a hubub with Glock. Someone told me that you could actually replace the Sigma slide with a glock slide and it would work.

I could be very well mistaken though.

Don't know about the slide swap. The Sigma series had S&W in a lawsuit they had to settle for patent infringement. And several performance issues. The SD9 line is supposed to be a gun between the Sigma and the M&P in quality, and is supposed to have taken care of the problems the Sigma's had. So far, everything I've read on the SD line shows this was accomplished I read a lot of reviews with 2500 or more rounds run thru the SD9s without any jams or other problems. They do look similar to the Sigma on the grip, Carlos!

Based on what I have seen, I'm reasonably certain they were 17's... 18's are a little too nice for a beat cop about here, not sure they could get one if they wanted to. I think automatics are restricted to the army and national guard. (and here, the national guard takes an active role in policing things on a daily basis)

looked like the gun was sitting forward far enough that sitting wouldn't be too much of a problem... but I'm sure it still gets in the way a bit.

I'm getting some jams with my gen 3 Glock 20sf. Took this pic today at the range. Failure to feed. Anyone have any ideas what's going on? I'm thinking it could be the stock glock spring, which is only 17 pound. I think most guys recommend getting a 22 pound for the 10mm. I'm just not sure what it is. So I was at the range the other day teaching my friend how to properly shoot a handgun. She has shot before but never was taught proper grip, stance ect.. so she caught a couple shells to the face and one down the shirt but took em like a champ and kept shooting. I as well got one or two to the forehead but I'm used to it by now.. well I wasn't expected or used to what was about to happen. So I was trying to show off and show her how awesome my grouping was and I was super focused on my front site and trigger pull.. slowly pulling the trigger back then I noticed something didn't feel right. As I left a round down range the brass managed to find its way between my eyes and my glasses. Now my glasses wrap around and since I'm asian my nose isn't that pronounced meaning.. it was stuck in there. I managed to keep the gun down range and with my off hand lift my glasses so it could drop out. At least it didn't somehow find its way down my pants!

Haha, don't feel bad. I've had the same thing happen to me twice. The first was my left eye got a nice blister from that one. A couple of weeks later I got one on my right eye and another blister.

By the way brass to face and in the shirt should be pretty uncommon from your own gun unless there is a wall next to you. What kind of pistol are you shooting?

Ahhh......I think you are referring to the mag issues on the .40 when they first came out.
The mag would accidentally drop on a specific production series identified.
That has since been resolved.
S&W fixed the problematic ones.
The 9 mm has been flawless since introduction.

TOO BAD I CAN'T EMBED VIDEOS......? but enjoy them if you want to follow the Youtube links

I finally received powder (I've had on order forever...THANKS Obama) slow enough to load up some 220 gr SMK subsonic loads in the 300 Blackout.

I build (assembled, pieced together, hobbled...what ever) a new SBR specifically to be used with a AAC Cyclone 7.62 suppressor. (if interested details on rifle below)

The issue is the 300 Blackout brass. I have some actual 300 Blackout brass, but I don't want to waste/damage it on load development. The only solution (cause there isn't any to be found....THANKS again Obama) is to convert .223/5.56 brass to 300 Blackout brass.

I put together a short video showing the steps to make the 300 Blackout brass and the simple reloading steps for making 220 gr SMK 300 Blackout rounds. I know there are MANY other steps, tricks, blah blah blah....but this was meant to be an under 2 minute simple video.

I will tell you that the tricky part it to get the CL and OAL to meet the specification of the rifle chamber so the bolt will close. Since ever chamber is slightly different I had to destroy 1/2 dozen cases and bullets to get it perfect for my rifle. 220 gr bullets take up a lot of case capacity.

Basic conversion to 300 Blackout video and simple reloading steps for the 300 Blackout.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFJzfsuQeRY

The shakedown run had no issues and ALL subsonic loads cycled the bolt, with suppressor. No FTF or FTE and they held the bolt open on last round. The subsonic load DID NOT cycle the bolt without the suppressor (expected this). The best part is that there was no POI shift with/without suppressor and removing/reinstalling suppressor.

Surprised as all reviews I have read, including gun mags rave about it.
I have the 9mm and absolutely love it as my favorite gun, specially for concealed carry.
Highly recommend it.

Same here.

Do you guys have any other pics the of the 9mm shield? I just came across it in my search for the compact. Im having a hard time finding places that have these in stock let alone getting the chance to see one. I finally got my two permits and I would like to use them before they expire..

I have been looking at the Ruger LCR .38 which I had the opportunity to shoot this past weekend and I loved it, but I'm not a 100% sold on having it as a back up. I was also looking at the SA xdm 9 or xds 9 compact. Still kinda new to firearms but I am looking for personal defense and something I can grow into. Since NJ is a huge PITA to purchase handguns, I would like to do it right.

Already planning on buying an SA 1911 .45 Loaded or might jump up to the Operator.

Blueface- Thanks for the pics. Yeah the shield being thin is what is drawing me to it along with I believe the xds. I'm just hoping they arent too thin, since I have fairly large hands. Might be taking a trip to PA next weekend to Cabela's

Go to a range that will let you rent guns. Try as many as you can. See what you like and go from there.

NJ only has a few public ranges, there are none in my area. The closest ranges are in PA which are about 40-45 mins away which is fine by me. Every time I have been to the range I have rented something new. As of lately though no one seems to have 9mm, or .380 ammo so no one can rent any of of those guns. I'm hoping that will be coming around soon as it seems that 9mm is coming back in stock.

I have tried both the J loop and the over the belt loop and seem to like the over the belt better.
Best is the one you have to put belt throu it but no one you can readily put in and out of concealment/pants. It's with you until you unbuckle your belt.

I just want to openly thank Mark C and lostark374 for posting the links to slickguns and gunbot, respectively. I have spent the last three months checking those sights constantly. I picked up a lot of ammo at reasonable prices thanks to gunbot. And yesterday (drumroll please) I orderd my first AR lower receiver complete kit! Not my first AR, mind you, but my first project build. I actually have some extra uppers that I've been swapping around on the same lower but I want to have complete rifles eventually.

It looks reasonably straight forward to assemble one from what I've been able to research. Any tips or suggestions would be welcome though. I'll post pictures when I get it and hopefully as the build progresses.

You're welcome! I've got more ammo than time to shoot, happy to share the links :)

I found this link (http://www.ar15.com/content/guides/assembly/lower/) useful for building the lower.

Some tips:

Be careful not to scratch the finish. Installing the bolt catch assembly seems to be the highest risk of a scratch. Try taping up the side of the lower and/or your tools to prevent that, and go slow.

The front pivot pin install is a royal pain because the detent pin has a habit of launching itself into oblivion. There are lots of different ways to do it without the fancy tool shown in the link above, I used a razor blade to hold it down while I slid the pivot pin in place. Watch some videos for this step to get the idea. Also try doing the work with the lower, your hands, and tools all inside a large clear plastic bag, that way WHEN the pin launches itself, it's captured in the bag. That trick saved me a lot of four letter words at least twice.

The rest is a piece of cake.

So I need some advice...

It wouldn't be my first firearm but My Pop's has said to pick out an "affordable" gun I like and he'd see about getting it for me for x-mas...

What handguns would you suggest? If I do get something Semi-auto I would like it to have a rail as none of my others do...

What lower is "affordable" yet well constructed, in case I decide to have him get me a lower and do my own build?

How much would a decent AR-15 build run after the lower?

Thanks for your answers fellas...

Define afforable? For a good affordable gun I'd look into Glock and S&W M&P line and Springfield XD line.

Lower, if you want a stripped lower then Palmetto State Armory makes a good one for about $100 as well as Spikes Tactical. If you want to build a bare bones m4 style AR15 you can expect to pay roughly 400-500 for the complete upper and bolt carrier group. Plus the lower parts kit at stock, roughly another $140. So Expect to pay between $640-$740 or so. That doesn't include mags or ammo.

Robulous78
07-28-2013, 03:57 AM
affordable I would say is 600 or less out the door...

He actually suggested I look into the Springfield XD line... So I would guess since he suggested it that is "affordable"

What if I bought an already built AR-15? better or worse than DIY?

I prefer Glock personally

Blueface
07-28-2013, 07:28 AM
In that price range, Glock for sure.
Question is do you want it for carrying or just to have for shooting at range/home defense?
If latter, go big with a 21.
If looking to shoot cheaper than .45 caliber, go 17 or 19, the latter being a mid size one.

I think the recent ammo shortage just kind of disproved that theory. The common caliber's were not easy to find for all people.

affordable I would say is 600 or less out the door...

He actually suggested I look into the Springfield XD line... So I would guess since he suggested it that is "affordable"

What if I bought an already built AR-15? better or worse than DIY?

Rob, I would say go test drive several handguns. Glocks are hard to beat for reliability but for me point of aim is off due to grip angle. The XD from Springfield is arguable nearly as reliable as Glock. If used is an option try the Sig Sauer line (one of the best I have tried).

For the AR if you really want to know and appreciate your weapon build one. Depending on tastes it can be expensive but you will have a better understanding of the weapon and how make it perform better.

Gotta tell you, for accuracy, shoot a 21.
I am no marksman and yet at 15-25 feet, I can group a full mag, where half the shots virtually go in almost the exact spot and the other half, practically next to it.
There is something about the weight of that .45 gun loaded that causes the recoil to go back, instead of up, yielding incredible accuracy.
I have shot many, many guns to figure out what was best for me, and this 21 has my son, daughter in law and wife, shooting amazingly accurate also.
Definitely not our marksmanship that is doing it as can't duplicate that with any of my numerous other guns.
Best advice is as given, to go to a range and shoot away. What is good for one is not necessarily good for all. Popularity means nothing. My Ruger LCP is probably the most popular .380 yet God awful to shoot for most, inclusive of me.

Original Post

Grabagun has a PSA rifle for 700.

I prefer Glock personally

We already have a few Glocks in the Family, I can't say I am overly fond of them personally... just not my bag...

In that price range, Glock for sure.
Question is do you want it for carrying or just to have for shooting at range/home defense?
If latter, go big with a 21.
If looking to shoot cheaper than .45 caliber, go 17 or 19, the latter being a mid size one.

I am looking for something multi purpose... I want something for defense that is fun on the range and makes a bit of a "don't f-uck around" statement. I like rounds with a lot of punch... .357 mag being my favorite but not available for semi autos... gave thought to .357 sig but haven't shot any yet to make a determination...

Rob, I would say go test drive several handguns. Glocks are hard to beat for reliability but for me point of aim is off due to grip angle. The XD from Springfield is arguable nearly as reliable as Glock. If used is an option try the Sig Sauer line (one of the best I have tried).

My dad really likes the XD line... he suggested I look into it for this purchase but I haven't been able to test drive anything... I really find myself in a place where no one I know around me has anything, there aren't any indoor ranges to rent different stuff to test drive... I kinda have to take my experiences with different rounds to the pawn shop, hold a bunch of stuff and imagine how I think it would feel... which sucks admittedly....

I am really thinking about starting my own AR-15 build... but I know they can soak up a lot of cash quickly... just ask Justin.... :lr I kid I kid... :tu

If I did build an AR. out of study and reliable but not necessarily name brand parts, if the lower was complete and covered, what would my end of the build cost me realistically?

I want to shoot the heads off of Zombies at 200 yards... not the wings off of flies at 1000.... :lr

I am open to anything, handgun or AR...

I am not a first gun owner as the thread states, I am thinking mostly in the following ways about handguns...

1) is Ammo for it going to be a pain in the ass to get or a pain in the wallet to purchase?

2) can it be both CCW-ish and still have a good punch for self defense/home protection applications, hand feel, and if I am CCW I want a safety also....

3) is it SIMPLE? does it come apart to clean easily? does it have 1000 pieces or 4?

The rest of what I rambled on up top are considerations also but I know you can't find EVERYTHING in 1 package...

If I am going the AR route, my considerations are different,

1) if I get the lower, what are my costs for "decent" parts to finish out the build, meaning to make a firing weapon, customization can come later...

2) is ammo an issue to find on these already? how about the future? how expensive is it now and how expensive will it/ can it be?

3) I want my build as close to the federal limits as possible, might as well get as close to the line as they let you in case they push it back later, what are they? are they more expensive to build towards, and whats the cost of a build like this run?

The reason I ask what you shoot now is to help narrow down some selections. When you go home what type of firearms are you shooting, let us know specifics; make, model, what you like about them and what you dont. You say don't like glock. If you don't want a bunch of parts than sig and hk are out too depending on the type of service/cleaning you want to do them. Simple break down is most firearms take down to 4 or 5 simple parts; frame, slide, barrel, spring guide rod if you want to count that. You also say you want a safety on your firearm, what kind? Frame mounted, trigger or slide? Do you like double action or single action semi autos, are you comfortable using both (sig).

Way to many questions to ask without knowing the depth of your shooting experience.

My Experience,
S&W .44 Mag, Love it but alas a revolver
S&W .357 Mag, Looooooveee it... but alas also a revolver
Ruger P-89 9mm, Probably my favorite of my Semi Autos, low recoil, very balanced.
IMI Baby Eagle 9mm, Love the all metal construction, tad bit heavy... about as small as my hand will allow without pinky coming off the bottom
Glock 22, I like the .40 caliber cartridge, but I want something with a bit more flair...

After looking at H&K I think I am turned off, still kinda interested in Sig Sauer's stuff...

When I was talking about safety's I was referring to frame safetys... I would be ok with a trigger safety too but I prefer frame... What is a slide safety and how does it differ from frame? if it is just the placement then that would be fine as well...

double or single are fine by me, hammer or hammerless doesn't make a difference to me...

1) is Ammo for it going to be a pain in the ass to get or a pain in the wallet to purchase?

The 357 Sig you like, yeah, expensive as crap and not easily found. For bang for caliber and price, .45 is the way.

2) can it be both CCW-ish and still have a good punch for self defense/home protection applications, hand feel, and if I am CCW I want a safety also....

For CCW, .40 or 9mm. However, the XDs in .45, while only holding five rounds is small, thin, easily concealed and powerful, yet unbelievably manageable and on my must have list.

3) is it SIMPLE? does it come apart to clean easily? does it have 1000 pieces or 4?

Nothing beats Glocks for simplicity. Four parts, easy/fast takedown. You mention a safety in your replies, which clearly Glocks don't have. I use two for concealed, a Shield 9mm and a Ruger LCP .380. The latter does not have a safety and while the Shield does, and while I thought it was important to have it, I have learned and adjusted to the thought that if I ever have to draw to save my life, the last thing I care to do is first release a safety, regardless of how easy it may be. So, I never use it. Only time is when I clear the chamber, drop the mag, pull slide to double check and then put on safety as added measure if showing someone the gun, or when in my safe loaded.

Lowers are back to pre frenzy prices. You can get a Spikes for as low as $95.

2) is ammo an issue to find on these already? how about the future? how expensive is it now and how expensive will it/ can it be?

.223/5.56 ammo is back in stock and about a dollar off the pre frenzy prices. It is a military round. Will be around for a long, long time.

3) I want my build as close to the federal limits as possible, might as well get as close to the line as they let you in case they push it back later, what are they? are they more expensive to build towards, and whats the cost of a build like this run?

Only limits I am aware of is 16" barrel and no full auto.

See above.

The .357 I have tried in a Sig model 226? and was arguably one of the best balanced load/weapon combinations I have ever tried. The problem is its very expensive to shoot and a pain in the ass to reload. That being said with the right powder bullet combo you can easily achieve 1500 to 1600 fps with a 124 gr JHP. Awesome show of I dont take no **** at the range.

If you want something with a bit more flair than 40, that fits a lot of your criteria look at a desset eagle in 357 :D A slide mounted safety would be something along the lines of Beretta 92. Not my favorite because it's to easily to activate the safety during malfunction drills.

What I recommend to take a look at are, in no particular order:

S&W M&P9/40/45. Great ergonomics (for me) adjustable backstraps to fit a variety of hands. And can have an optional frame mounted safety like a 1911. Downside is that the safety flips on and off very easily

Ruger SR9/40 Haven't shot one yet, but it was my next purchase due to it being very inexpensive, but a glock 19 came up that I wanted. Has a safety fame mounted safety and trigger safety as well.

Sig 299R (9/40/357.) No safety, but since you're used to revolver shooting using the DA/SA trigger should not be a problem for you.

All are concealable, at least for me. The least expensive of the three would be the Ruger, then S&W finally Sig.

I am not a first gun owner as the thread states, I am thinking mostly in the following ways about handguns...

1) is Ammo for it going to be a pain in the ass to get or a pain in the wallet to purchase?
Depends on how much you shoot. Prices are still a little high, but ammo is more available than it's been since the Great Panic of 2013. If cost is a concern, I would look at a caliber that's widely available and more cost effective...like 9mm. Remember, it doesn't matter how big a bullet you're shooting, if you're not making your hits, then it's all wasted.

2) can it be both CCW-ish and still have a good punch for self defense/home protection applications, hand feel, and if I am CCW I want a safety also....
Nothing wrong with 9mm for both. 9mm is very manageable and most double stack handguns hold about 20 rounds. I have both 9 and .45 for both CCW and home.

3) is it SIMPLE? does it come apart to clean easily? does it have 1000 pieces or 4?
XD's are by far the easiest to field strip. Glocks a close 2nd. But at some point, you will have to detail strip the firearm...and ALL of them come in lots of small pieces. But in a firefight, the worst you would have to do is field strip, and that's for a worst case scenario.

Field Strip - remove slide from frame, remove guide rod/recoil spring assembly, remove barrel...inspect and reassemble.

Detail Strip - take it down to the frame and bare slide for cleaning/maintenance.

The rest of what I rambled on up top are considerations also but I know you can't find EVERYTHING in 1 package...
You'd be surprised. My first handgun purchase was an XD .45 Compact. It's had upwards of 10k rounds through it...no malfunctions. Comes with a 10-round mag for carry, and a 13-round for home. But I added a mag extension for home, so it's really 17 rounds. Even has a rail for my light.

If I am going the AR route, my considerations are different,
Yup. AR's CAN be used for home defense, but are larger and have higher velocity rounds. Train with a handgun, take as many classes as you can to be proficient with a handgun...THEN move up to an AR for defense. Mine stays in the safe while I'm at home.

1) if I get the lower, what are my costs for "decent" parts to finish out the build, meaning to make a firing weapon, customization can come later...
$80 for a lower. Another $80 for a lower parts kit. $50 for the tools to assemble it yourself, could be more. $500-900 for a complete upper to bolt on to it. I built my AR that way and grand total was $875 using Spike's Tactical parts. If you've never had one, I say buy one already complete. Familiarize yourself with it, THEN venture into building your own.

2) is ammo an issue to find on these already? how about the future? how expensive is it now and how expensive will it/ can it be?
What others have said...ammo is available, and the prices will eventually come down. Key is to check the online places when they run deals on cases. AIMsurplus.com is one of my go-to's.

3) I want my build as close to the federal limits as possible, might as well get as close to the line as they let you in case they push it back later, what are they? are they more expensive to build towards, and whats the cost of a build like this run?
keep the barrel no shorter than 16", and no full auto. Anything shorter than 16" is a Short Barrel Rifle and requires a tax stamp. Full auto is a Class III item and requires a lot of paperwork and money. But most places will specify if their parts are SBR/III.

I carry both .45 and 9mm. .40 is just another caliber I would have to buy for.

FYI for anyone wanting an Umbrella lower.
They just opened the lines for pre-orders.
Won't ship until October some time but if you get tired of wait, they will cancel your order and reimburse the payment.
While the billet looks nice, no way for $350.
Went with a forged. I also want to eventually get the upper receiver and grip.
Will then get all the umbrellas on the parts painted red and white.
Now if only they also opened the lines for orders of Alice, life would really be good.

Sig is not the only one that is capable of the conversion other makes do it too.

Firearms are like anything else, it's all in the users perspective. I've always used the line of, "I can recommend you that $3000 Wilson Combat on the shelf that's guaranteed to shoot 2" at 25 yards, but if it doesn't shoot well for you I just sold you a $3000 paper weight." I know you're in a tight situation of not being able to try before you buy, but I hope that you can.

On the flip side you learn to adapt to the firearm. My coworkers always challenged me to pick up any firearm on our shelf and shoot it well before they even considered showing me how to or even working on the triggers of my own pistols. I'll say it took me a long time before I had my first pistol worked on.

Latest purchase. Haven't shot it yet. Taurus Judge, Public Defender. Aftermarket add-on poly grips greatly increased the hand area, and much more stable.

Wow,
At least the Shield involved a quick check, of which outs were OK.
It involved a possible discharge if dropped.

This XDs recall is much more serious,

Thanks for the heads up! IDK why I didn't get an email about this? I signed up for all info when I registered my firearm a few weeks ago.

I will be checking this tonight...I cant carry here but no reason to let this be ignored.

I will then proceed to upload pics of my new 1911 =)

I am considering purchasing a XDs .45. I know they just had the recall come out, but that part does not bother me too much right now.

For those who own this gun, or have shot this gun- what are your thoughts? I would primarily use this gun for when I travel and some concealed carry (when I am called out for work, or if I think there might be issues at work). Prior to the XDs, I was considering a S&W Bodyguard .380, or a Ruger LCP .380. The reason I have considered the XDs is the safety features, and the .45.

Thoughts?

I have fired all three and own the LCP.
I don't like the Bodyguard at all.
The LCP is a shoot and hope you will hit something gun.
The XDs is in a league of its own compared to these other two. Quality, feel, safety, sights, and knockdown power all give it a significant edge in my opinion.

Consider also that they now make it in a 9mm. While the .45 is manageable, I imagine the 9 is more. I mention this since the other two you are considering are .380.

How much larger is the XDs vs. the LCP/Bodyguard?
