I've got a Saiga 7.62x39mm that I converted to a pistol grip. Was a bit of a pain following the code to make it compliant, but it sure is nice :) Cheapest way to a brand new AK-47 I think!

I've still got to make the mods to have it accept the normal AK clips, but it's on the plate.

I'll get some pictures of it and it's buddies up soon.

Is that Sig a P6? I just bought one of those a few months back, the finish on mine is crap though, and the gun is older than I am, but it ought to work fine. Been too damn busy to go to the range though ::mad:

On that note, anyone know what I could use to fix up a worn finish?

After 27 years of being away from guns and shooting I am returning to my heritage.

Recently I visited a friend in North Carloina who's husband had passed away. She gifted me these guns:

Remington Model 11 (made in March 1940) This is not a pic I took:

And I was also gifted this Beretta Model 418 made in 1953:
http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc32/fishforfree2/beretta.jpg

Also while in North Carlina, my brother in-law brought his Smith & WEsson 9mm and gave me the opportunity to shoot a handgun for the first time in my life:

In that case, the glock isn't a bad choice if you need to stay under $500. If you can spend just a bit over, you could look for a used Sig. Glocks are indestructible, but they are like a Toyota compared to a Sig which is like a lexus.

I bought it as my carry weapon as it is ultra light compared to my Taurus 357mag which is about 1.5 pounds and not fun in the hot weather.

My only complaint is that the slide seems a little hard to work, unless I am getting whimpy.

It's basically the image below,

It was recommended as the best carry weapon.

Your not getting wimpy that seems normal for every kel tec I have ever touched. Can't wait to hear your range report. Enjoy

That Kel-Tec P11 is nice. I used to carry it before I switched to a S&W 442 revolver. I just sold the P11 to my brother the other day. Be sure to take it to the range and break it in. :tu

floydpink
12-30-2008, 08:27 PM
Are you saying it gets easier to slide after it breaks in?

I'm almost tempted to chamber one as I'm not sure if I'd have the strength to handle it in the middle of the night if necessary.

I traded in my 357 and they let me fire off all my last rounds before trading it in.

Compared to that beast, the Kel Tec was as smooth as silk. The 357 actually tore my skin between my thumb and index finger from the recoil. Forgot my fingerless gloves.

Weirdest experience at the range. A British couple was firing next lane and the guy decided to shoot my target I guess. He shot cross lane and hit the clip on my cable holding the target and knocket it off. They left after that thank God.

Do you guys chamber one while carrying? I never did with my revolver.

Do you guys chamber one while carrying?

Yes. Always have one chambered when carrying. Waiting for SHTF and then chambering a round is like putting on a seatbelt after the Peterbilt has already crossed the yellow line. There is so much adrenaline flowing through you when SHTF that your motor skills degrade. PLEASE, be sure to chamber a round. Also, there is a possibility that you might not be able to use both arms in a bad situation. If you have a good holster, you don't have to worry about an accidental discharge. Remember, keep the gun always pointed in a safe direction :tu

I never did with my revolver.

I don't understand this. Do you mean that there were no rounds in the revolver at all?

floydpink

Good analogy about the seatbelt and being ready Elderboy.

I guess I meant that, with a revolver, it seems a little harder to shoot than with the light trigger of the Kel Tec.

I wear an in the pants holster due to the fact that I am normally in shorts, so a misfire will make me a miss.

I will be once I turn 21 in 3 months. It blows my mind that I can go out into the field and play with all kinds of weapons systems. Just a few weeks ago learned about and got to fire 240G and 250Bs and 249s and yet I can't go out and purchase a handgun. Anyyyway. I will be CCW'ing this and I'm not sure what, if anything I want to do to it. I'm thinkin night sights. The Crimson Trace is fun -- a friend has them on his Kimber and it is a cool system. If price isn't going to hold you back (ie if you can drop the bills for a Colt) then take a look at Kimber. They make some outstanding 1911s, although I'm still leery about the compact sizes. I think a 1911 should be constructed in all of its glory, at least a full 5 inch barrel. They feel goood. However, Glocks are indestructible. I love my 19. A friend just picked up the subcompact Glock 36 and it is a beauty. The slim grips fit my small(er) hands perfectly.

Also, check out S&W M&Ps. They are quality firearms from what I have heard. Haven't gotten the opportunity to fire one, although the M&P15s (their AR15 in the same line) are pretty nice.

So. Look into Kimber, Glock, and S&W possibly. Can't go wrong with Springfield either for 1911s, but I'd shell out the extra cash and pick up a Kimber.

Stig

More stopping power than a 9? Put hollow points in, squeeze 5 times, and if he hasn't stopped, you probably need hand grenades.

Seriously, for home, I fully believe a Mossberg shotgun is the ultimate home defense.

For carrying, I love a 357 magnum, but hated the weight of it, and went with a couple LEO friend's advice and picked up a "feather weight" Kel Tec 9mm and barely noticed at all day today.

My only complaint is the thing is really stiff, but I hear it gets better with a little breaking in.

bonjing
12-31-2008, 05:27 PM
my recommendation is to try a few out and see what really fits you. and i don't mean just fiddling with each one at a gun shop, shoot each one. have a friend take you out or see if there is a rental shop near you.

i have seen two friends walk into a shop both really excited about getting a glock. they decided to rent one (a glock), the shop employee also let them try a different pistol. one walked out with a glock and the other walked out with a sig. each person is going to be a little different.

with that aside you can't really go wrong with any of the pistols anyone has mentioned here.

I'm really having a tough time figuring out my new Kel Tec P11.

They have a reputation for needing a lot of "fluff and buff" before being ready for carry.

I've put 50 rounds through it and had 2 misfeeds, which apparantly goes away after break in.

Someone suggested I field strip it and buff and polish the feed ramp with a dremel, which I did last night. Haven't gotten to test it yet.

I've put some Militec 1 grease on the slide rails as well as breach and that helped a lot with the stiffness.

I'm not sold yet on this 9mm, although several people recommended it as the lightest and smallest possible concealed weapon. Might just sacrifice the weight issue and stick with my trusty old 357 magnum....

I bought a P3AT as a back up carry and I polished the feedramp with a dremel and so ultra fine polishing compound I also worked some slip 2000 EWL oil into the slide rails and have not had any feed issues since. I have about 750 or so rounds through it. I don't shoot this much as it is my back up(as if my HK would ever fail).:ss

Jordan,

Is that IWB holster comfortable with the two straps?

Yes.

It's a Milt Sparks VM2. Probably one of the best holsters I've found. Period.

They're hand made and take about 6 to 10 months to get once you order though :(

It looks like everyone is stocking up on guns :D For those that don't know, the 4473 form is the form you fill out when you purchase a gun. It is used to run the background check on you.

http://www.atf.gov/firearms/010609atf_f4473shortage-notice.htm

January 6, 2009

Notice to All Federal Firearms Licensees
Regarding ATF Form 4473 Shortage

As a result of an unprecedented increase in demand for ATF Forms 4473 (5300.9) Part I Revised August 2008, inventory of the form at the ATF Distribution Center is running low.

As a temporary measure, ATF is allowing FFLs to photocopy the form 4473 in it’s entirety until they receive their orders from the ATF Distribution Center.

A notice will be posted at the expiration of this temporary authorized change.

The processing on the CCW is apparantly backlogged to almost 4 monts as well...

After a month with my new Kel Tec P11, I found that you need to be an amatuer gunsmith as out of the box, they aren't ready.

I had to polish and dremel the feed ramp and do a fluff and buff inside, smoothing the rail and breechface as there were several burrs and rough spots.

The accessories are on and I put the mag extender, trigger shoe, and the belt clip is the best.

With the belt clip, there is no holster needed and the gun is no more intrusive than a Blackberry and I hardley know it's there...

Well I went to buy another gun today, figured they didn't have it and the place has had 4-5 just laying around all the time.

I was going to grab a Nagant revolver, mostly due to dirt cheapness and the gas seal and the idea of firing a 223 out of one.

Just seems like a lot of fun firepower for 150 range. So I'll be on a hunt for one.

Firing a .223 out of a Nagant Revolver!???

That's a 30 cal bore.

Where did you hear about this?

Ace$nyper
01-14-2009, 06:07 PM
Read in a Imperial Russian arms book, found a few spots on line.

Says it needs a hand load of sorts, I cant drop in a normal 223 though, but I'm kind giddy to try it.

From the wiki (appears to be copied out of the book I have)
Other cartridges—.32 S&W, .32 S&W Long, .32 H&R Magnum, and custom handloads using .32-20 Winchester, .30 Carbine or .223 Remington cases—will also chamber and fire in the revolver but will not achieve the gas seal.

edit: http://forums.gunboards.com/showthread.php?t=5415

Just use the brass, the book seems to kind leave that out...

Go rent some to try before you buy. The glock gets alot of accolades, but the grip angle for me just doesnt work AT ALL. Its one of the most uncomfortable guns I've shot, especially in a .40.

You can find used or CPO 226's in your price range, but dont rule out looking at a P229, they're amazing.

Yeah, the Sigs are definitely the top of the top. If the SEALS carry them, they can't suck.

Ironically, last night at work, everywhere I looked there were Ruger and Team Glock shirts. Turns out there is a gun manufacturer convention in Orlando this week, but not open to the public.

I know I'm in a minority, but I feel that the Kel Tec P11 is the ultimate deep conceal weapon and with JHP +p rounds in it, is one heck of a good sidearm.

I really am looking for a backup that is both concealable, dependable, and extremely well built. The Glock 19 is in the front of the pack right now, although I need to try some of the others mentioned here.

I just started the process to get a LTC-A in Boston (unrestricted, concealed). Probably will end up with the A, non concealed, but that's fine. It comes down to the Police Chief's discretion, and 9 times out of 10 they do not allow concealed carry.

There's also quite a few hoops I have to jump through above and beyond the already draconian Massachusetts licensing process, but it will be worth it in the end.

There seems to be a lot of people buying guns and getting permits, acting like Obama is gonna take away everyone's guns.

There's a chance he'll ban assault rifles, which I don't agrue with, but they'll have to pry my cold dead fingers off my guns.

i'll talk to john and see what kinda price he can get. send ya a PM when i hear back.

Ok cool.

I've tried a bunch and it's pretty much the Glock 19 or save up for the Sig...

In other words, if I don't get the 19, I don't get a Glock.

you can find good deals there but remember you have to ship to a FFL and pay theirs fees. it helps to have a good friend with one though.

Yup, I keep telling myself that before I slide down that slope...

If anyone is interested ableammo.com has 1000 rounds of PMC Bronze .223 for 449.50.

Check out www.wisconsincartridge.com for .223. They are reloads, but a case of FMJs for $300 is hard to beat in this day and age. Sadly. Never had a problem with their reloads, and I am pretty picky about what I put through the Bushmaster.

I'll check out that case of PMC though. $449 isn't too bad. Although I'd proly go 5.56 for those prices.

Brother called me today, told me he bought me something. He sent me this picture. Standard Glock 23. Now if only I can snag an AK before they go up again, ill be happy.

Mmm... I love some Compact Glock ****. It is sad, my G19 cost nearly $500 in late November. Last summer you could get one for a bit under $400 around here. Price gouging at its finest.

Very nice! You can tell that the gun is new, and not used b/c you can see the copper compound on the slide that comes from the factory.

do any of you guys have any civil war era weapons? At some point I would like to buy a musket or carbine which are awesome guns.

I've got a rifled musket that probably doesn't work any longer. Very similar to a Springfield 1863, but I think it's actually a European gun, maybe Prussian.

I've been trying to get a better ID on it, do you have any contacts who may be able to help out? The biggest problem is there are no brands or other identification marks that I can see.

509 is the cheapest that both of my locals can get a 19 for. i feel it's a ripoff but it's what the market is carrying right now. honestly i wouldn't pay that much for a glock. i'd be looking at a sig or a HK. or buy a used one. the price would be different they said if they had one in stock.

I don't think it is American Made. If it was a Harpers Ferry model it would be stamped. Its possible it was used in the CW and then shipped back to Europe for use. I know a guy who bought a carbine in Afghanistan and it was used in the CW.

Just bought my first handgun and shotgun about a week ago.

The handgun is a Springfield XD40 and the Shotgun is an Escort 12 gauge pump action.

Pics to follow soon.

I meant I believe it's European manufactured, probably shipped over here for use in the CW. The rifling pattern and caliber don't match anything US-made, but they're close.

I wish I could shoot it. The barrel looks to be in good condition, the trigger and hammer all work well, but the percussion nipple is corroded enough that there's no opening to the main barrel. I imagine antique gunsmiths are few and far between these days.

Most likely. Its tough finding those old muskets in good enough condition to fire and the ones that are are very expensive I wouldn't fire it. Still a sweet gun though.

I sent off an email to College Hill Arsenal and Tim Prince hooked me up. He says it definitely is an Austrian M1842, manufactured in 1848, and converted to percussion, possibly by Leman in Lancaster, PA, though the bolster is missing the clean out screw he used. He also said the cut stock was probably done in the 1920s, one guy (forgot his name) was notorious for cutting stocks to ship surplus arms in smaller boxes. He did tell me not to even consider firing it, as the Austrians used crappy iron that probably isn't any good 160 yrs down the road, regardless of apparent condition. Also valued it at ~$600. I do like the look of it, might try and find a functional repro just for fun :D

I'd definitely recommend Tim and College Hill Arsenal for anyone interested in CW-era 'stuff'!

Alright I ordered 1000 rounds of PMC .223 ammo from ableammo.com. Tonight I recieved an email saying...

Dear Customer,

We have learned, that our PMC 223 will arrive the last week of February,
possibly the first week of March. We did sit down with PMC, and negotiated a
little better price. We also have negotiated with Fiocchi ammunition company a
good deal on .223 ammo. We wanted to give you our customer an option, due to
the delay on the PMC.

1. We can hold your order for the PMC, and continue to reserve it for you. We
will adjust the charge per 1000 round case to $349.50 per case.

2. We can offer the same load in Fiocchi brand .223 for $349.50 per 1000 round
case. Fiocchi, has notified us that they will deliver to us within the first
two weeks of February.

Both Brands of ammunition are brass cased 55 grain .223 FMJ.

Please let us know how you wish us to proceed with your order.

What Im wondering is should I take the PMC ammo or Fiocchi?
Has anyone shot either of these loads or know which one is better?
