Bought up some "vintage" CAVIM 7.62x51 ammo this weekend. (2005 date of production.) Seller was an old friend, he sold it to me at more or less pre-hysteria pricing. Didn't make the buy just for the hell of it though, was actually something that's been on my shopping list for a spell now.
Maybe spectrrr can start getting me more of this stuff since the factory is in Venezuela. -(P

I'm looking at purchasing my first hand gun. I will mostly use it at the range and not primarily a conceal and carry. That being said, I have found three that I really like. The Glock 23, Springfield's XD, and the Sig P250. I love the way all three of these shoot. I'm leaning towards the Sig because it is a modular handgun and you can buy the conversion kit to change out the full size to the subcompact size when needed. Thought?

The good thing about Glocks is that with a barrel and sometimes mag swap you can change calliber. 40SW --> 357 sig etc. Glocks are very simple and easy to work on.

Indeed. I can shoot the 40,9,357 and I'd have to double check but might even be able to shoot the 10 all out of one gun with the required changes of corse.:tu

emopunker2004

Yeh. the 357 is just a 40 case necked down to take a 9mm bullet. since the bulk of the case is the same and the part that contacts the follower is the same, they have the same follower. Much like you can shoot 300BLK in a 300BLK AR with regular 5.56 mags.

I wish some of the other polymer handguns would come out in 10mm. Got a pair of Glock model 20s. They do the job for carry in bear/wild boar country but I seem to shoot the Springfield XD guns better. Not very much hands on with the Smith Wesson M&P's but I believe the same is true for me with those versus the Glocks.
I've owned a Colt Delta Elite but sold it after realizing I was not gonna use it for carry out in the wilds. Too dang pretty.

That's the same as the Sig p250. It can change out from full to compact, to sub compact. Also can change cal from 9 to 40 to 45 ACP. Won't do 10 though.

I do not like the Sig 250 its DA trigger pull is horrible, I have now played with 2 of them over the last 6 months were the owners complain of shooting chronically to the left. The last one I looked at last week had the rear sight drifted all the way over and still wasn’t shooting center..... Plus they only come with 1 mag! and last I checked the mags for them were like $39 ea(compared to $20-$25 for factory Glock mags) 4th Gen Glocks come with 3 mags.:tu
In my opinion the Sig 250 is meant to compete with the Tarus Millennium and pistols of that appeal.
There is no one pistol that can adapt to all scenarios, kind of like trying to use a hammer as a screw driver, paint brush or level, lol . Generally “Modular” do it all designs only attract first time buyers.
Like mentioned already my Glock’s are usually my go to gun, personally if its your first CCW handgun I would recommend you look at the G19 also right now still in love with my XD's. 45 although I am not a HUGE XD fan.

I'm in a similar boat as Pete, I have decided on 2 different pistols and need to pick one; both in 40 S&W and both fully ambidextrous (I'm a lefty).
First is the Walther PPQ known for their excellent ergos and possibly the best trigger of any polymer pistol. Comes with 2 mags with 12 round capacity and 3 interchangeable back straps.
The other is the FNH FNS. Good trigger, external safety, night sights standard, 3 14 round mags, 2 back straps and a lower bore axis than the PPQ.
The prices are almost identical (within 20 dollars). Any advice would be appreciated.

Do any of y'all own a .17 HMR? I may be in the market for one and was just trying to get some insight
What type of firearm, rifle or handgun? Reason I ask is that so far there has been more negative than positive with semiauto handguns chambered for either .17 variant. Not sure any of the name makers are producing them now. From what I've been told it's somewhat the same with semiauto rifles, lots of functioning issues.
Couple of friends have bolt action rifles chambered for the .17 HMR and have had good luck with short range jackrabbit/prairie dog hunting, the small critters drop dead right on the spot most of the time.

Have you ever shot a bear with either of the 20's? Curions as to how the 10mm performed. I'm looking at getting one to carry while guiding bear hunts in SE Alaska. Everyone else carries 44 mags but that's just because they are more comfortable with revolvers. I carry a Glock 22 every day so I'd feel just fine with the 20.

Nice pickup! Have the same in the LSS version. Tack driver and fun at the range when people back off the line:banger With the muzzle break it kicks less than a 7 mag even when loaded hot. Look in to reloading for it with the way ammo is for it, even with reloads it's pretty pricey. Gets that way when you use 85-95 grains of powder per round.

Had 6 mags on order for $20/ea....
Looks like I'll be stuck with just one factory mag and 2 plinker tactical 35 rounders for a while.
FYI, can't get the plinker mag to work in slide fire. Not sure why. It FEEDS them fine, and they go bang... I just can't find the "slidefire sweet spot" with it. Otherwise no complaints, it fed fine for the two mags I ran through it. All CCI tactical ammo, which is supposed to work good in 15-22s, but NOT good in the plinkers. still worked fine for me....

Got one of those for my wife last year, she loves it.
Watch that trigger though if you bring any new shooters to the range with you. I let an inexperienced friend shoot it a few months ago and she managed to accidentally bump fire it. Sounded like it went full-auto for 3 rounds. Did some reading and found out that's not uncommon since it has such a short reset and light pull.

How's the ar market look like? I've stopped looking since December and I'm feeling like a light weight pencil barrel build in the immediate future.
Lowers (stripped or complete) still seem to be quite high, but are available. Upper parts seem readily available and not overly inflated if you do a little shopping. BCGs are still the long-lead item, but not as bad. Complete uppers/rifles from major manufacturers still appear hopelessly backordered and/or overpriced. Smaller shops are better, a buddy of mine is having an upper built at Ironworks Tactical (http://www.ironworkstactical.com/) with better components, shorter lead time (4-6 weeks), and cheaper than the majors. That shop's prices seem good even by pre-hysteria standards.

Watch http://www.slickguns.com/today regularly, even daily if you're looking for something in particular. Chances are if there's affordable ammo, it'll get posted there, but it'll sell out quick. I've helped two of my buddies find 9mm at $15/50 from that site in the past month.

These are the idiots that cause concern for most of us gun owners.
to summarize:
1) follow car loaded with teens as result of road rage from being cut off.
2) leave wife and child in car and go punch teen in the face
3) get your ass handed to you to include a broken nose
4) have your equally idiotic wife load the chamber and hand you a gun
5) go after teens pointing gun to shoot at them, with finger on the trigger, even if the threat has retreated.
6) get back in your car and follow them for over 40 minutes to their home.
7) shoot out the back window of their vehicle, as they are on the phone with the 911 operator.
Amazing. They are lucky the charges don't include attempted murder, with each teen being a count.

Looking for thoughts on a quality AK47 manufacturer?
Saiga makes a good rifle, I wouldnt hesitate to buy one of their guns. I have a WASR-10 that runs like a champ. Ive heard good things about the Bulgarian Arsenal guns too. The only thing I'd avoid with an AK are the home built receiver kits, unless you're 100% certain it was built by someone who knows exactly what they're doing.

Use caution, that shooting sport can be extremely addicting--and very expensive, if ya really get hooked. Only thing that's kept me out of it is the lack of courses within a short drive.
As to "how much" gun to buy for yourself right off the bat, get something that fits you well and operates reliably. Like any other type of firearm there's such a thing as going too cheap and winding up with something that breaks down with any serious amount of use. Takes the fun out of the whole day.
Sorry my advice is generic but the couple times I tried sporting clays it was with a decent O/U borrowed from a friend. Even with that limited experience I could tell the stock's dimensions weren't quite right for me, would have had to shop for something a little different than the one I used.

Thanks for the info Brian. From all the research I've done the last few days, people say to bypass the low end o/u and spend the little extra on a Browning Citori. Right now I don't have the minimum $1500+ to spend on one of those. And because I'd like to use it for more than just a target gun, I'm leaning towards a Weatherby or Mossberg semiauto.
And yes, it looks like it can get expensive. Like I don't have too many hobbies already draining my pocket book. :D

Was talking to a couple of friends today that have done some sporting clays shooting. Both of them prefer an autoloader--specifically the Beretta--with screw in chokes. Although barrel length preference is sort of an individual thing, 28" or 30" seems to be the most popular choices among that crowd, at least with the semi-autos.

While I can find defensive ammo all day long, bulk range ammo is tough to come across unless I buy the reloads at the range but I have had mixed results with it.
The last time I bought the ranges reloads I was firing 2 weapons one in 9mm and one in 40. The 40 had 4 failure to feeds in 100 rounds and the 9mm had one stovepipe, 2 failure to fires and one failure to feed in 50 rounds.
I seem to have feed issues whenever I use their range ammo but never have an issue with factory loads.

http://www.slickguns.com Check it often, most deals posted sell out quickly. Mags are starting to get easy to find and prices seem to be back down to ~$15, give or take a few bucks. Basic BCGs are becoming more available, but if you want one of the fancier ones it may still take awhile.

I was thinking today...can't find 9mm or .223 anywhere, but the range I go to has both in range ammo only. What's to stop me from buying time on the range, and a couple hundred rounds of each type of range ammo, firing off a few and just take the rest home with me?
How horrible is range ammo that it wouldn't suffice as backup to what I already have? I have a very small supply of defense ammo already, so the range ammo would just be extra.

Hey alljust bought my first firearm today at a pocal range. S&W m&p 9mm. I've shot it before did plenty of research then pulled the trigger :). Went out bougjt a handgun safe and cleaning kit to go with it as well. Super excited to take it to the range this week! It came with night sites and once I break it in I might do an apex trigger kit as well. If I can figure out how to upload pics from my phone I will.
Funny part is, I went to cabelas two meijers and two walmarts plus where I bought it from... turns out ammo is harder to find/buy then the gun haha. Everyones all ban this ban that no assault rifles or pistols! No need to ban something when you can't use it! My friend is hooking me up with some ammo but I found it kind of funny. Good shooting to everyone and stay safe!

Range ammo as in name brand ball ammo or re-loads? Ball ammo is fine for self defense if you do not have any dedicated defense ammo. Better that rocks :D. Although it does not expand, ball ammo still helps evacuate blood as quickly as possible :r.

If you're looking for just some cheap plinking ammo than it should be ok. Some ranges down load their ammo (if it's made in house) so it doesn't damage house rentals and saves on powder. If it's made in house maybe you can talk to the reloader about buying in bulk.

I've reloaded for about a year, only pistol cartridges so far, and only using a Lee turret press.
I enjoy it. It takes time though, and right now finding components is almost as hard as finding loaded ammo. If you want to reload just because you can't find ammo, I'd suggest sit tight and wait it out. If you want a new hobby, go for it. Expect about $150 or so to get in the game, plus components. You CAN buy everything online (when it's in-stock), but powder and primers will come with a $27 hazmat fee on top of regular shipping charges, so you'll probably want to see if any of your local shops have those supplies.

Yes, I have reloaded for 20ish years on all forms and varieties of presses. I load rifle/pistol (including obsolete cartridges)
Please ask what you'd like and I'll attempt to answer it.
Lee Turret is a ok press.
What calibers do you plan to load and how many a month?

For now just 9mm which I do realize won't be a huge money saver once prices come down. But I feel like it would be a relaxing hobby at the end of a long day. (I like hobbies like this I paint warhammer figures, models things like that). I was wondering what a good press would be for starters? I don't need to mass produce rounds or anything just enough to let's rip a few off now and then at the range.
On a side note: walmarts are stashing ammo behind the desks or in back. Go and ask to speak with a store manager. Make sure its a store manager not a floor manager or anyone else. Go to walmart.com amd get the cpu code (not sure if they are different but in my region its 0002946506087) and ask if they are in stock. I went to a local wally world during my lunch break and the gentlemen incharge of the sporting goods section was very nice told me the delivery schedule and that yes, a lot of walmarts are stashing ammo out of sight. Max of 3 boxes a day per person.
Edit: that cpu code is for 9mm

I've been seriously looking into getting an AK47, Zastava M70 or similar. They seem to be right around $1,000 at this point in time. Anyone know what a fair price for a new AK from the Zastava factory would be? I'm tempted to just buy one now, but if prices will be falling soon I can wait.
I'd wait for as couple of reasons
1. Prices should be falling in the near future
2. Most of the ammo is imported...an EO from the POTUS can prohibit future importation of it.

Range ammo as in name brand ball ammo or re-loads? Ball ammo is fine for self defense if you do not have any dedicated defense ammo. Better that rocks :D. Although it does not expand, ball ammo still helps evacuate blood as quickly as possible :r.
Pretty sure my Range does their own reloads for range use. I was just thinking of a way to load up on cheap ammo.
If you're looking for just some cheap plinking ammo than it should be ok. Some ranges down load their ammo (if it's made in house) so it doesn't damage house rentals and saves on powder. If it's made in house maybe you can talk to the reloader about buying in bulk.
Yup, just want some for use away from my local range. No need to pay premium (if I can ever find any) for defense ammo when I'm just gonna waste it shooting at cans and targets in a field.

I use my friends dillon, I think it's the 550. The thing is amazing I don't think I'll ever want to use a single stage press ever, I can't even imagine how slow and cumbersome it could be. He did learn on a single stage (if I'm using he term correctly) he said that it taught him to be patient and how to properly reload.

I load with both single stage and progressive presses.
In my experience, I've learned the following.
Speed is not your friend when reloading. Speed is especially not your friend when you're first starting out reloading. Unless you're going to load 600+ rounds and can't spend more than 2 hrs doing it, there is no real need for a progressive press.
There are a few reasons I'd suggest you start out with a single stage press.
1. You're making mini explosives and you're better off learning the basics before you start mass producing rounds quickly.
2. There are more chances of catastrophic issues with pistol rounds than rifle (pistol is much easier to double charge than rifle)
3. You're going to invest a lot for something you may not like
Stages of reloading: (basics as there are many other stages that can be preformed to attempt to control the minutia of variances between rounds in an attempt to maximize accuracy)
1. Case Prep
a. clean cases
b. size / de-prime (uses press and die)
c. trim (if necessary)
d. chamfer inside and out
e. prime (potentially dangerous as primers can ignite when inserting and if so can cause all primers in priming device to detonate)
2. Charge case (most time consuming part of process)
a. measure powder (variety of methods: manual thrower / scoop / digital thrower)
b. weigh powder (use balance beam or digital scale)
c. drop powder in case (check...check....check....I can't say this enough.....C H E C K what you're doing here as this is where serious issues occur)
3. Seat bullet
a. Seat bullet to proper seating depth for O.A.L. of cartridge (uses press and die)
b. Crimp bullet (depends on bullet/cartridge type and if necessary - uses press and die)
4. Check weights and measurements for constancy and variances
As you can see from the above you have a lot of things going on and trying to do them all at once can be dangerous unless you know what you're doing and have some practice at it.
Now if you're going to load only 9mm and a few hundred at a setting you can do this with a single stage press very easily and fairly quickly with a single stage press set up.
The key is to use a ball powder (like WIN 231) and create a load around it for your pistol. Ball powder meters very easily and consistently so you can use a manual powder thrower and this will help to cut some of the time down.
Along with this, 9mm is a straight walled case and doesn't need as much case prep (doesn't need mirrored polished cleaning each time) and can be sized/de-primed quickly with carbide dies.
Rules to live by when reloading:
1. NEVER MORE THAN ONE OPEN POWDER ON THE BENCH AT ONE TIME
2. Do not reload when drinking or taking drugs or recreationally using state approved medical drugs...;)
3. Do not reload while watching TV
4. If you think there is something wrong with what you did or how the round looks, SCRAP IT. It's not worth your firearm, your life and the lives of those around you.
Also, you don't really save money reloading. You just shoot more for the same money spent on factory ammo. And you'll have to calculate those savings and shoot enough rounds to break even with the cost of the equipment before the cost benefits really kick in.

Complete luck to be honest. We had a brand new pawn and gun open up yesterday literally across the street from our neiborhood. I was the first one in the door and asked about the KSG and PMR30. He pulled out the KSG with an 1100 price tag. Then he told me about the 10% military discount. :D. First sale in the new store. Just wish he had the PMR. I wouldn't jump straight to the Dillon. Here's why:
1) Starting with a turret or single stage will force you to slow down, take your time, and focus on what you're doing.
2) Presses hold their value. Try finding a used press more than a few bucks cheaper than new. If you do decide to upgrade, you should be able to sell your starter press for at least 80% of the new price.
3) You won't want to sell the starter press though. You'll set that one up for a special cartridge you want to load slowly for utmost accuracy (probably rifle), and use the progressive for plinking pistol ammo. :)
I'd go with a turret press over a single stage. All the advantages to the single stage PLUS you can load faster once you get the hang of it. Honestly I think it's safer too since you work one cartridge at a time, start to finish. Seems less likely to accidentally double charge or no charge a case because you got distracted and forgot where you were in your loading block.
Here's a few additional things you'll probably want that may not be in a kit:
Calipers (I prefer digital, but it's your call) - you'll want to measure overall cartridge length.
Tumbler - If you want to reuse your own or range brass, you'll need to clean it.
Digital Balance - Mine cost $20, works great. I use a few bullets as test weight, it's very consistent and a lot easier to use than a beam balance.
Bullet puller - For WHEN you screw up and need to separate components.
Ammo boxes - I use a combination of flip top plastic boxes, surplus ammo cans, and empty paper boxes picked out of the trashcan at the local range.
Finally, don't overlook the Lee products. They cost half the price of the other brands but that doesn't mean they're bad. The cost difference between RCBS and Lee will buy you a lot of powder, primer, and bullets.

Actually, I should explain. The SSA and SSE's are very nice triggers for what they are. If you take your time through the pull it is very light but you can still feel very, very little grit it in. The more I play with it the more it has smoothed out. Would I say it is a completely better than the stock trigger yes. The best trigger out there, I don't know, I haven't tried a lot of them.
Honestly the 2 stage LMT trigger I have is almost as nice. I decided to leave that trigger alone versus swapping it out to an SSA.
I did have a nice RRA NM trigger that I traded out due to reliability reasons, Giessele being more reliable, but the RRA was also a nice 2 stage trigger.

Ok, the more I think about my trigger options the more I'm not sure which direction to go. Which one of these options would you go with?
1. ALG Milspec trigger + misc lpk + KNS antiroll pins + JP Springs ($130)
2. Spikes enhanced LPK ($200)
3. Misc lpk + Geissele SSA + KNS antiroll pins ($250)

3. Misc lpk + Geissele SSA + KNS antiroll pins ($250)
KNS is an option. I only say this because from the guys, Geissele, at SHOT Show they explained to me that their springs are harder than KNS pins causing them to wear out. I don't know how that works but that was straight from them. I still run KNS pins in everything, it just makes cleaning and emergency fixes a little harder.

Thanks for the insight. One reason why I put the KNS pins into the mix is because the mill wasn't adjusted for my lower and counter sunk the trigger and hammer holes a bit (top lower in the pic; I did get a free lower due to that ). Wanted to make sure the pins don't back out accidentally plus it'll cover some of the defect up.

Just bit the bullet and bought the Geissele SSA. Figure if I don't like it on the pistol, I can use it for the rifle build

So I got my two mags in for my m&p.. one ejects and slides out like butter and the other ejects but then sticks. Is this typical of new mags/anything I can do to fix this?

Just keep using the one that sticks, i.e range and what not, it should loosen up.

Will do thanks! I gotta stop looking at your posts though. First the hook up on the optics then that!

Then I would HAVE to buy a rifle... I like the position it puts me in. Let me know when you order one and ill probably be in!

Not yet. I've been wanting to build my own ar15 though for awhile. Its either that or a 1911 and since I have a pistol now it'll probably be the ar15 build

Build away, now that HOPEFULLY prices will not be so crazy since the AWB was scrapped.

Thankfully! I might end up just going with a bushmaster or dpms though. I'm already in the process of starting my reloadig bench so to add another bench with all the tools might be too much.

Doubt it. People are still feeding the frenzy. Went to the gun show last month and was SICKENED at the gouging.
Concerning AR's, I HIGHLY recommend building your own lower, then buying a complete upper. That's how I built my Spike's Tactical AR. I used Magpul MOE furniture and Spike's lightweight upper. Weighs 10 pounds loaded with a 30-round mag.

Here's a decent deal on a DPMS.

Never dealt with them, but they're a vendor on AR15.com.

Here's a pic of what my Wife wanted for her 25th Wedding anniversary (Hey, it's got silver on it...)
Kimber CDP II .45

It took her about two days to realize she didn't want to share and said "You know, we should really get you a new gun too" lol, so back to the store on Sunday and I came home with a Sig Sauer P250C .45 that I'm really enjoying. Point and pull, it hits what you aim at. :)

Shop around for deals. Check out slickguns.com for deals/in-stock sightings and ar15.com. They have threads there devoted to finding uppers, lowers, BCG's, and mags.

I'm saving up for a ruger sr1911 right now. It'll be my first 1911. A buddy of mine has one and I need to get my own to shoot. :banger
