Since I am new to the rifle secen still, I was looking up some good tips to clean the AR. I came across this video.

Will do Mike. I haven't even shot it yet but plan to use it as a backup/off duty while I'm at work. With my small frame it's hard to conceal a G23.

Single stack thinness is awesome!!
Who here shoots the two dot night sights? or the Straight 8? I have always been a 3 dot guy but I went with the two dot Ameriglo night sights for my shield, I will get them intalled in short order, my question for anyone is if they think target aquisition is any faster with two as opposed to 3 dots?

I have some 9mm ammo that I just recently shot. I have had it for a few months now before I shot it. It looks dirty and it is reman. I have had a few bullets that where in the mag and did not fire. Happened prolly about 10 times.
Should I sell this ammo cheap or is there anything I should be concerned about if I keep it and waste it?
I also don't want to sell it if that is bad.
Ideas?

I wouldn't sell. Shoot through them and be very careful about misfires and clean your 9 well.

I have a few pistols with the 2 dot and a few with the 3 dot. I can't honestly say which one I prefer more but it did take me a little adjusting once I bought the first 2 dot.

I prefer the straight-8 over the I-dot even though they are basically the same. The serrations on the Heinie's sight make focusing and lining up the sight easier, I don't know how to explain it but it makes for a better sight picture for me. As for being faster to acquire just depends on your training. For low light/night shooting I prefer the 2 dot versus 3 dot, it just seems less cluttered.
Thanks for the input on the sights, I will get mine on this week and then get some shooting in, I qualified with my Shield last night , 94/100 pushed a couple left as I am not yet used to the slimmer grip.

Mike, did you get the 9 or the .40 Shield? Just curious if you shot both and how they felt. I'm starting to get serious about picking up something for carrying. I already have a Glock .40. Would like to stick with the same ammo if possible. I know too I need to try them myself cause each person is different, just looking for other opinions.

Put a hundred or so rounds through my Shield last night with my new two dot sights, I like the sights just fine, still getting used to the thinness of the Shield and be mindful not to get too much finger on the trigger, but sure is fun to shoot!

Looks like it was caught in a tornado. Grips replaced. Maybe it was buried in a load of gravel in a dump truck and then found again and cleaned up? Used to level concrete? Kept unholstered in the bottom of a toolbox? All of the above?

That gun appears to have a slide mounted decocking lever, and the trigger has been converted to double action use. Looks like the offspring from a 1911 and a S&W model 645 that had a wild weekend together.

People new nothing about them back then. Everyone wanted to shoot it. Luckily ammo was cheap at the time. Now I barely practice that much so I can keep my stockpile high. So, two months or so back, after ten plus years of looking I found a used Beretta 92G in very good shape. (Spring loaded decocking lever that doesn't act as a manual safety, other than that is just like a 92F/FS. The G Model is a better mousetrap in my opinion.)
Yesterday I manage to score a second one, from the same (non FFL) vendor at a gun show. Asked him if he'd stumbled into a stash of the things. His reply was that he half expected I'd put that first one back onto the market and he'd run across it again, until he looked at his records.
Weird.

I can guess what a lot of people got for Christmas. I was just looking at PSA for kits to build out some lowers and they are cleaned out. I guess I'll wait a bit.
When Steve posted his kydex holster it made me think about how much I like mine. I have had it now for over six months and carry a full size 1911 in it all day with no discomfort at all and usually only cover with a t-shirt. It's from a company called Panther Concealment (Jacksonville, FL) and if I didn't have one I wouldn't believe how good it is. www.pantherconcealment.com (http://www.pantherconcealment.com) I think. I have nothing to do with them other than I have bought a holster from them and like it a lot.

Not a bad price. I can't remember the going rate for the shield (plus I'm basing off Cali prices) is but I've seen the ct grip is about $170 ish and the mags can be about $40 a piece (I'm basing off all full M&P fill sized pricing). So if it looks barely used and it's something you want I'd go for it.

I'm not a glock fan boy but they make a heck of a pistol an this new one seems really nice with an extended tail, just wish it was in 9mm though.

In other news I got an awesome little S&W model 36. Was made in 1969. My old man had it entirely refurbished for me for christmas. Its like a brand new gun

Most likely. To me the grip length and width is what matters. it's almost the same in both dimensions as by Beretta Nano 9mm. Sorry but I i bought a 380 it'd have to be LCP size or similar to make it worth the trade off

Agreed x100. I would be all over this if this was a 9mm. The thing that draws me to it is that it looks like I can get a high grip on it without getting slide bite as I always do with smaller pistols. the kahr is the closest that I shot without slicing my hand up, but that long trigger pull is not to my liking although I have shot nice little groups with it. I haven't used a shield yet. I like this as an option for us guys with chubby hands :D
I hope to get my paws on one at SHOT to see how it feels but something is telling me I won't even get close enough to even breath on it.

Would not surprise me if a 9mm and a thinner .45 than the 30 are in the works to compete with the XDs.
I think I would still prefer my Shield any day over this .380 but for my still somewhat skiddish with trigger and firepower wife, this Glock seems like a perfect fit.

Those are nice. I'd probably go with a PPK, they're classic and are pretty accurate (for a .380). My go-to gun is still a .45 though.

Been my experience it's best to wait until you can actually get your hands on a gun to cast any sort of judgement. Just from seeing pictures...well, lots of people did only that and went 'UGH' about Glock handguns and Steyr AUG rifles back in the day. Many of them came around a little bit through the years.

Very interesting concept. I used to carry .38 in double projectile load. Less powder and lower velocity but a double hit. Worked great in snubs and played hell with longer barrels. When I moved to a 9mm I used Glazers for a while then the cor-bon +p Shot shell. Now I make my own Gold dots. They are as close as you can get to Black Talons.

I've done both. The single clip, if mounted to the holster, doesn't allow the belt to wrap around it properly...making it slightly thicker overall. I use Comp-Tac Ctacs and love them. 4 XD, 1 XDm, and 8 1911s. Love them.

Umbrella stuff is hard to get as it flies off the shelf as it comes in.
Best thing is to regularly check their FaceBook page.
They make very good quality stuff.
My lower and uppers are incredible in terms of perfection.
I am a big fan of the Resident Evil movies so it is a must have build for me.
So far, BCG $145, Lower $175, Upper $145, Grip $20, Parts Kit $35, plus cost of trigger.

any inputs on 28 gauges. Tired of my 11-87 for quail (probably still use it for dove), and I've always wanted a Browning Citori 20 gauge w/ an English stock. Buddy of mine is good pals with a Benelli distributor and he's going to get a Benelli Legacy 28 semi-auto at a break-neck price. I can get in on the deal and think I'm gonna put off the Citori. Another friend says he has no problem with knock down power on pheasant and grouse with his 28, and claims 28 gauge deliver the best shot pattern. Any inputs.

You'd be surprised. I've had 1911's that were a mess. Where it usually goes wrong is with the extractor and ejector. But those are also easy fixes.
Also, the internet will tell you that 1911's with a barrel shorter than 4" will be trouble. It all depends on the manufacturer. My 4" 1911 has a 2" grouping at 25 yards on a rest…and there is no way I can replicate that free hand.
Some manufacturers don't build their 1911's to mil-spec. The ATI Commander I had needed major work to fit an aftermarket sear/disconnector. The channel they sit in was way too small. Most other 1911's need just minor sanding for the same part…if sanding is needed at all. However, the ATI went bang every time I pulled the trigger (dang stiff one too) and was a very accurate and comfortable gun. And for $450, it was priced right. I sold it because I end up tweaking my guns and it would have cost too much to do what I wanted…due to the out of spec manufacturing.

Just built this one to sell.... Trued Rem 700, .223 Bartlien 1-8 chambered for the 75 Amax, obviously threaded for the Suppressor and sitting in an AI 2.0 Stock, Cerakoted in Black
Was very cold this morning but I managed to put 8 rds thru it with a makeshift load that didn't do to bad.

Thanks, your builds are always in a class unto themselves.
This Grendel could be finicky. It got a 18" Liberty barrel and the throat seems a little short. Initial dummy rounds have 120 SMK at 2.230 OAL. Chamber is not to tight though. We shall see.
What were your experiences shooting at 600 / 800 / 1000?
Any favorite loads that you remember?

Shawn, I was shooting the 123 Amax & Scenars using IMR 8208 XBR with 28.5grs I had a Saturn Barrel..... Seemed past 500 yrds it just fell on its face where the 6mm's such as the 6BR, BRX, and the 6 Dasher make everything look bad because they are so accurate and easy to tune.

I'd like this to shoot well at 600. The round should be dropping 35-45 feet at 1000. I don't think I'm going to have any real success at 1000.

It will shoot OK Im sure Shawn, but I doubt it will be a 1/2 moa gun at 600 with any consistancy and certainly 1000 would be not even be close.
I also shot some factory ammo from mine with great results but that too fell off past 400.

PSA stripped upper receiver or complete upper?
cigarmonkel
01-20-2014, 06:27 PM
If your doing a build and getting a stripped upper go with BCM. They have a track record that everyone swears by. I have many BCM parts on my build and have 0 problems with them. I've contacted customer support with questions about parts, availability, shipping and they have always been quick to respond and very professional and very helpful.
BCM is roughly 30-40 bucks more for a stripped upper which isn't much in the long run for a build. PSA is newer and IMO i'd rather spend 30-40 bucks more for a part I KNOW will be good, solid reliable. Nothing against PSA but I'll let the other guys spend their coin building PSA's track record up.
If your going for a complete upper then thats a different story. If you go PSA you will obviously save some money then if you were to go Colt, BCM or any other of the bigger name brands. Money could be used on fun stuff for the build or ammo. I believe Wilson makes the barrels for the PSA upper (where as I would assume) BCM makes their own barrels for their complete uppers. I have a 16" mid length 1/8" BCM barrel and so far, love it. I haven't had it out at any long distances yet. Also, what do you intend for your build to do? General purpose? Distance/bench rest?

PSA is GTG. Don't get a PTAC I've heard hit or miss things about those.
My PSA upper ran just as good as my wife's LMT upper. If it has the CHF barrel even better. Those barrels are made by FHN/FN

:tpd:. Unless they come out with some sort of hybrid complete badass BCG with ejectors on both sides of the bolt carrier... hmm... if someone wants this just take some tape and two AR-15's.. WHAMMY! The idea though isn't half bad in theory. If your gonna have two completely different systems on the same gun why not two different calibers? I think that would be a decent idea? You could have the standard 5.56 on one side then a 300 black out or a .308 ooohhh or maybe the new .300 win mag conversions people are starting to finally do. That would be interesting. I still wouldn't buy one though.
Would have 0 real world applications in the field. But would make for a fun range gun or wall piece.

The twin-barrel is a gimmick. Much like the SlideFire stocks. There's a saying in the motorcycle world…"If loud pipes save lives…imagine what learning to RIDE that thing would do!" Same thing with firearms gimmicks. If you think 2 barrels will take the threat out…imagine what learning to shoot that thing could do!

might have to get me a couple boxes of these... and by might i mean MUST.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gczIArF6Uqg
its the new G2Research round. they are CNC'd from a solid piece of copper. they act like a hollow point but they have "fin" like pieces that come together to make the bullet. At impact they fan out and detach from the base of the bullet... insanely devistating and look nasty to boot.
after watching them against ballistic jell-o they look like they don't have as much penetrating power as a normal hollow point which means might be safer to use in a true home defense senario too. I'm always paranoid that IF i ever find myself in that situation (god forbid I EVER have to) that the bullet will travel through the walls. It definitely has enough power to get the job done and put someone down but I'd like to see this run with a piece of dry wall and ballistics gel on both sides of the dry wall, each gel being about 8-12" thick.

I will only say that many similar claims of ballistic performance have come down the pike through the years. Lots of those companies are long gone from the scene. The quote often attributed to P.T. What do you mean by claims? I'm simply wondering as I'm newer to the gun scene and haven't been around long enough to see such things come through the pipe line. I do know there are videos of this round through ballistic gel but I don't how you would define a claim. In the ballistics gel it looked quite good. Had the same effect as a normal HP round would + more. Again though, I am curious as to what you would define as a claim in this situation. Not trying to defend this product or company but am curious and I appreciate the info about other companies that aren't around anymore.

I wasn't there when the company did the testing or set up the gelatin. We don't know if the ammo was souped up beyond normal, or the gel of the right consistency, etc.

Lots of ways to manipulate data and tests. I think I'll wait a while to see how it stands the test of time. Until then, I keep to the old reliable and proven products.
I also wonder if you had the misfortune to actually have to use something like this, what the lawyers would make of it. I can see them arguing that you were using a round that was "boutique" and intended to do "excessive damage" and they could try to work the angle on "premeditation" somehow. Let's face it, in this day and time, people are always looking for an angle to shift the blame. That's why I don't have "zombie killer" stuff.
Not a lawyer, but I also don't underestimate the stupidity/ignorance/conniving of society these days.

Carried one in my patrol car for a couple years, shot it quarterly. Really nice to shoot but a little more work to maintain than the AR15 for the average cop. Lots of little pieces seemed to get lost when they were cleaning them so we traded the minis in for ARs. I'd buy one if it was a deal, and I'll probably snag a 10/22 when my boy is ready to learn to shoot.

What equipment is necessary to start reloading?
It depends on what level you want to reload. I would suggest to start with a single stage press. Much slower reload speed but makes you follow the basics before you advance to a turret press. You will need a powder scale, I would recommend a powder drop too (makes measuring the load easier). A micrometer, a brass trimmer a primer pit tool and primer seat tool should round out your tools. You will need separate dies for each caliber you are going to reload. Your initial investment should be around $300 to $350 depending on the press and the dies you choose to start. I would also advise getting a reloaders manual from speer or hornaday.

I started with the lee 4 turret press. As long as you take it slow, take your time, its fine for a beginner. Just do A LOT of research about your loads, setting up your press and then do some more research. Every time I sit down I still check my die's to make sure they are at the right levels/specs for my load. I'll run the powder drop a until I feel confident about the weight its dropping (I'll load powder, measure, dump powder back rinse and repeat 5-10 times before I actually start loading). Then I'll check my powder weight every 10 rounds.
I would recommend getting multiple loading manuals. I have a Horandy, Lee and another big book (don't remember the name of it). One book might not have a certain powder that the other book will or they might have different specs for each round. I started off (powder weight wise) at the lowest between what all 3 of my books said and worked my way up from there.
1) Press
2) some sort of digital scale or a powder drop
3) micrometer
4) Manuals
5) Primers/powder/bullets/brass
6) Bullet puller
7) Some sort of brass tumbler and media
If you are doing rifle then you will also need
7) Case trimmer
8) Case lube
9) Depending on the round a primer swagging tool (5.56 can sometimes have a crimped primer which you need a special tool to deprime)
edit: If you get a turret press it will come with a deprimer (for non crimped primers) and a priming tool already built into the press

What ideas y'all have for sighting this? I've already done some research but I'm throwin' it out here.

Thanks for the info on reloading. Right now I'd get started with .40 for my pistol, and possibly .223/5.56 as well.
Bob i would start with the .40 and see if its for you before you jump into 223/556 or both. Pistol is easier to reload. The case brass for pistols won't expand like rifle brass will. As long as your OAL for your .40 is good to go the entire round should be good to go. You can save some money so you don't have to buy a brass trimmer and primer swag for your 556 that way. If you like/enjoy reloading then you can go get the proper equipment to reload for your 223/556. Unless money aint no thang then do both!! :noon
