Gotcha....I've been bumping up the weights at the end of sets, and instead of being able to do the full 10 or 12 reps I can really only do about 5-7 at this higher weight. I just didn't know if I should leave it at the lower weight and do the full 10 to 12 reps or if it was cool to do the higher weight with only 5-7 reps.

I remember reading about one guy(can't remember who) but he never liked the idea to lift to failure, said you are training yourself to fail.
I agree with Tom though if you lift to failure that is a full set.

Can you guys give me some exercises to do to get your legs in basketball playing shape? This is for my son who plays HS ball.

Last year he would get fatigued at the end of both halves, effecting both his shot, and defense. Right now he's running in open gym practices, and lifting weights with the team, but what I'm looking for is a 20 min. routine I can help him with at home. No weights, but things like jump rope, duck walk, etc. Any ideas? Thanks!

Thanks, Perry. There's just something in my rear rib region that keeps popping out. The funny thing is that I can pop it back in ... but then it pops back out again. A chiro can fix that up good. All that said...

...it didn't stop me from doing some alright lifts today.

3 sets of 120lb seated military presses
1 set of 45lb/ea db press (I've been doing 50s; but just couldn't get them up today)
2 sets of 35lb/ea db side raises
shrugs: 10x135, 10x225, 6x315, 6x365, 5x365, 4x365

Also got to give an athletic guy some deadlift tips, which was fun for a fatty like me. :D

I use both, probably about 60/40 free weights to machines

DavenportESQ
10-22-2008, 09:10 AM
I would prob. be 80/20 Free weights to machines. They do have benefits because you have constant tension on the muscle the through the whole range of motion.

Prof-What is your daily target protein intake?

Prof-What is your daily target protein intake?
My target is 1g/lb (200+). My actual intake the past couple of days has probably been 125-150g ... which is just ridiculous. I know better than that. Speaking of -- I'd better hit some more protein. I'm at about 130 for the day so far; but I really need to be sure to stay on target tomorrow and Friday. :)

PS -- I'm about the same free weight/machine ratio as D.ESQ. I *think* the only machines I use are cable lat and row machines at this point. Actually ... may actually be more like 90/10 -- unless you count the "smith machine," which I use for my bench so I can push a little further without a spotter.

DavenportESQ
10-22-2008, 01:50 PM
I use machines for more "show" exercises...Leg curls Peck Deck, curl machines, stuff like that and will work very slowly where I can maintain a constant tension on the specific muscle group, instead of sometimes cheating by using other muscles. It makes me feel the pump like AHHHNOLD!

Don't lift anything that causes joint pain, Chris, you could be doing serious damage.

Don't lift anything that causes joint pain, Chris, you could be doing serious damage.
:tpd:

Indeed. I meant to type the following last night (but must have deleted it by accident):

As zemekone always told me, "Being sore is okay; but pain is pain."

In other words, it's one thing to have sore muscles after lifting -- you are, after all, creating micro-tears in your muscles when you lift heavy enough to do any good. It's another thing to actually cause pain (see Icehog3).

The Professor

I fought the power racks ... and they won. Feel like I've been beat up with an iron bar today. Oh wait -- I have. :r

Got up *way* late and felt way dehydrated, which makes sense since last night was the first night with the heater on all night. Today was leg day, which got complicated since this is usually the day I take a bit longer (try not to rush getting up to weight on squats), but I had to shorten my day since I was running behind and parking illegally (Dr. MRS has the parking pass and she's out of town).

Squats:
135 x 8
185 x 8
225 x 6
275 x 4
275 x 4
275 x 4

For some reason, 275 was just wrecking me. Almost fell forward at one point; almost puked at another. Oh well ... I knew this would be an "off" week given last week's travels and the way I've been eating.

Stiff-legged deads:
135 x 10
225 x 6
275 x 6
275 x 6
295 x 5F
295 x 3F

295 may actually be a new personal best for me, which is kind of cool. Tried to follow that with some seated calf raises with 3 pies; but my calves cramped up (not enough water in my system) and I realized my body was just out of juice.

Re-learning important lessons about nutrition and my body this week. LoL!

Today was a fun day in the weight room. First time I've felt that I could push myself, I was much more positive. It was also a less complex day which made me excited to be in and out, with minimal loading.

Speed Bench
We do this to stimulate CNS. We already have a day where we rally load up (floor press) this is more designed as a sport specific (shot put) exercise. We use the Tendo unit( A computer we hook up with measures total watts/and Meters/second) This is also fun because while power lifters can lift a lot, that is not what I need to do, I need to be more dynamic and flexible. I tried to keep everything over 1m/s

warm up sets
185x3
195x3
225x3
225x3
225x3
250x3
250x3
250x3

I did this all with <1 min. rest

Incline DB Bench- I really like these because I get more isolation, and can load up without putting a lot of stress on my shoulder (I have several injuries here)

90x8
100x8
110x8
125x8

That was a new PR for 8 for me. Pretty geeked....I was feeling the "arnold pump" at this point and supersetted Pullups and Tricept extensions

This was nice, instead of going home and crashing I felt like teh workout invigorated me and helped me start my day, which in turn led me to surfing the net looking for cigars ha!

G, I usually dont do much rep work above 6's sry I guess I will need to come out and train with you to get stronger in my DB Incline:ze:ze:ze

1 m/s is pretty much the target goal for me for most of the presses, I try to work close to 2 m/s in all pulling/olympic exercises. If you have a tendo unit at any of your gyms they are a really good piece of equipment. During summer training I have a test I do before every workout and measure and see what power production I am at, and that dictates the workout, we also do this in season to avoid over training. Plus it just makes sense, if you can't pull at maximum efficiency why do that workout?

OK fellas, I'm gonna stick my head up finally after reading this thread here and on the other board. I never really lifted before. I was more of a push-up, sit-up kind of guy.

Well I'm trying to come off of a long sedentary period of about seven years. I drank alot of beer and ate alot of food. I was about 180 Lbs, for my height that is damn fat, bordering on obese. So for the past 2 almost 3 months I've been monitering my diet and doing some light upperbody weights. I dropped down to about 145 Lbs.

When is a good time to start bulking up? I heard from some website that you should get down to below 10% body fat before you start consuming more calories to start putting on more lean muscle. I still have some belly fat, should I lose as much of the gut as possible before?

Also, is the whole 1g of protein per pound of lean muscle mass formula effective?

And Zemekone, you are the pull-up king. I am up to three with good form and happy. Sure I can do five but after the third, it gets dodgey quick. :tu

When is a good time to start bulking up? I heard from some website that you should get down to below 10% body fat before you start consuming more calories to start putting on more lean muscle. I still have some belly fat, should I lose as much of the gut as possible before?

in my opinion winter is the perfect time to bulk up cuz you can wear sweaters, and jackets plus you have all the big eating holidays...

Also, is the whole 1g of protein per pound of lean muscle mass formula effective?

i like 1.5 g of protein per pound, and 2.0 grams per pound of carbs

And Zemekone, you are the pull-up king. I am up to three with good form and happy. Sure I can do five but after the third, it gets dodgey quick. :tu

when i started doin pullups i couldnt do 5 to save my life, so i started doin 12 everyday, didnt matter how long it took just get to 12, then 15, then 20, then skys the limit...

now i do weighted pullups 50 with at least 45 every other day...

+1. Burpee pull-ups are even better. Due to all of the running I have been doing I've avoided the gym since the summer. This thread is getting me pumped for my marathon recovery time when I can start hitting the weights again. Although, I get through the O-Course a lot faster with my skinny endurance body then I ever did when I was lifting.

Funny how that works.

Pre-lifting supp by "Controlled Labs" that a lot of us take. Basically energy + focus + NO booster. Get some crazy pumps and the occasional berzerker feeling on it (that would probably be the beta alanine). :D

Regular dose is 2 scoops. Someone your size could easily do 3 once you're used to it. 4 would be complete insanity and land you in an asylum. Just ask icehog. ;) :r

OK ... I'm definitely showing improvement on chest. Still a weak-assed mutha****a (especially given my OK deadlift and squat for a beginner); but I'm getting better and that's a big deal for me. A couple of months ago, on incline, I remember working *up* to 95lbs for 5. Today I started with 95 for 10 as a warmup ... working up to 135 for 3. If I hadn't done flat for quite a few sets beforehand and warmed up for so many reps (also did 115s), I could have done more. Anyway, it was a big deal for me. :) I think next week, I'm gonna stay OFF the smith for all my exercises. :ze Also, I'm pretty sure I could do 185 for 1 on flat bench. I just need a spotter I can trust....

Hope everyone has a good day in the gym! :tu

White flood eh? Is it similar to No Explode? I have taken No Explode, MHp's version, and Cytosports version which all sound similar. I liked it for lifiting, but I found that I need more of a boost at practice. I didn't like the feeling that They gave me because I felt a lot more jittery. Right now I take Bodyquick, avail at bodybuilding.com I take 1 pill in the AM, but 3 before practice. This helps focus without the jittery effect, the other day I took it and I had it to where I could feel nothing but my big toe, and when I felt my toe, it was going to be a good throw!

That may sound crazy, but this is an asylum afterall

I just read though this thread and I have to say you guys have me pumped up for working out tonight. I am more into the cardio and light weights cuz that is what I was told to do to burn up fat, is that right?

I shoot for 35-50 mins on the eliptical machine followed by 3-5 sets 50%max with 20-30 reps with 1 minute or less between sets. Every other day I run about 3 miles for a morning cardio. With my workouts I am trying to burn fat. Since I really started I lost almost 40 lbs in like 3 months.

I also started eating better. I try for 180-200 grams of protein a day. Sundays are my off days no workout/ eat whatever/ just strech. I am shooting for 185-190 lbs before I start changing the workout to grow me some show me muscles.

Any advice on weather or not this good would be very helpful. Thanks.

The cardio and light lifting is probably best if you are looking for some fat loss. Remember that diet is a huge part of it to, sometimes more so than exercise.

Is 180-200 grams of protein more or less than you were taking in prior to beginning the program? I wouldn't up my protein levels too much until you have achieved at least part of your desired fat loss. I would suggest cutting back simple and complex carbs as much as you can and still maintain the energy to do what you need to do and to work out. I am not sure what your food options are there, but you can tweak whatever you have to work.

Good luck with the program, and there are many of us here to help when you have more questions. :tu

I am weighting in at 200-205 right now. So I am close to the weight I want to be at. The portien is guessed cuz i take 2 protien shakes a day and eat 3 small meals. So the numbers may be off a bit. I do limit carbs. Cutting carbs was the hard part of eating right for me. For like the first two weeks I tried to cut them out completely but then realized that wasn't smart so now I eat them just watch to make sure not to much.

Decided to lift today since I had all those carbs this morning. :) I know, I know ... "off" days are supposed to be lift-free. So sue me. ;)

Since they're not in my current rotation, there's nothing quite like it in my rotation, and it's my favorite lift -- and at the egging on of Gerry -- I decided the deadlift would fit the bill.

135 x 10 raw
225 x 10 raw
(took shoes off, grabbed the Inzer, and strapped in for the next set)
315 x 6 (easy, but stopped because I wanted to conserve for more)
365 x 3 (okay ... that was a challenge. I probably could have done 4 or 5, but wanted more)

So I was faced with a decision -- hit 405 for more than one rep or skip 405 and try for a personal record 455. What do you think I did???

455 x 0
455 x 0
455 x 0

Okay -- you can't blame me for trying. At this point, I was feeling pretty spent. I took the 25s off and strapped in for 405; but I felt a slight tinge in my right glute and didn't want to injure myself, so I stopped.

Finished off the day with a bunch of pull-down abs and cable rope crunches. :D

Your hormonal cycles could be off:r
I know that sounds funny, but usually every 3-4 weeks you hit a testosterone high, and the following week is a low.. Also, sometimes serious workouts can take up to a week for a full recovery. Sometimes on max effort days it can take 7-10 to feel back to "normal"

Fighting through it, and getting a good workout in will benefit you greatly

I agree Dave...Strength is defintiely cyclical and no one is at their optimal strength day in and day out. I also adjust to the periods where my strength is a bit lower, and get in the best possible workout I can for conditions at that time.

Got in 15x50 curls twice before I had to drop the wieght due to my damn elbow, went down to a pair of 20x35 to finish my reps out. Any ideas about a good brace? Brands etc? about 12 weeks or so ago I had a full dislocation of my left elbow. I'm out of the sling now but I still havent regained full range of motion, I used to be able to go 15* past full extension (i.e. double jointed) but i doubt i'll ever get that back again. Basically when lifting it tends to feel like a hard pressure on the joint especially doing curls. anytime I can use both hands I can compensate with my right arm and I wont stress it. Any ideas for excercises? The biggest thiny is the feeling makes me nervous Im going to dislocate again and it didnt feel so great the first time ;)

I had a really good start. started w/ shoulder press on barbell and after warmup did 5 @ 205 and then another 5 @ 225. Did a few sets of 8 @ 185 and my shoulder started to hurt. Was really starting to hurt doing anything using shoulder so I decided to throw on ice and call it quits. I did 2 scoops today. I dunno how it worked, I felt good doing shoulder press, but if it is supposed to make you feel "pumped" or anything I didn't really get that today....at least not too severely. Maybe I should try 3 scoops?

A good friend of mine was a world class athlete, and was always traveling. We'll he told me on one trip to Europe they gave him one of those night masks to sleep with. He said ever since then he wears one when he sleeps and believes he sleeps better, and in turn recovers faster and more effectively. He also sleeps with ear plugs!

Good evening fellas. I was planning on hitting Back/Abs tonight, but after an awesome dinner of some extra hot Phad Thai, I'm not sure my digestive tract will be too happy with me if I go. I took some pepto a bout ten minutes ago, so I'm hoping it's all good within the next hour or so.

I'm down below 240lbs (238 now) for the first time in probably 5-6 years and I've never felt better. I ran a 9:15 mile on Monday, and that's a significant personal best (Especially considering the 14:00 miles I used to crank out in middle/high school). This whole gym/diet thing is really starting to pay off, and I'm really starting to see some changes.

A buddy of mine had the idea of taking a picture of myself in front of a mirror every Friday so I can see the changes from week to week, so tomorrow will be my second photo-op.

I'll probably end up hitting the weights regardless tonight, so I'm sure I'll be back soon.

I have used both extensively, and find I get better results with the White Flood. That being said, cycling different products from time to time might help your body from getting "used" to one of them.

I tried NOxplode for the first time 2 nights ago. I definitely felt a good energy kick for about 15 minutes, and then I felt like I do taking the 6-star muscle NO tabs right now, Nothing. WF kept me energized and ready to rock for 45-60 minutes if not longer when I used to take it. It didn't have the same energy that NOxplode does, which to me felt like a hyper energy, as opposed to WF's making me feel more awake/ready-to-go than hyper. Having tried them both, I'll be re-stocking with WF as soon as my paycheck allows.

I have to say I really like NO explode. I often have to do workouts that span the time of a couple of hours. I have never really felt the "pump" from any product (but I haven't tried WF) I think a lot of what you take should be decided what your goals are? The NO explode helped me take care of, and helped me raise energy for a lot of the major lifts I do, which are often preformed in the first 20-30 minutes of gym time for me. I also took this before doing many exercises not only related to lifting, this includes plyo's, sprinting, jumping and more importantly throwing. NO gave me an edge mentally where I felt a lot of other products gave me gittery energy

The only thing I've ever really noticed from the Six-star NO Overdrive is that red rash you can get from taking too much NO. I tried 5 one time, and my arms were on fire for a good 30-45 minutes. On a good day I can see a visual difference in vascularity in my arms, but it's nothing like WF, or even NOxplode for that matter. Granted, this is the one that I have (http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/six/stim.html), they have a NO Fury drink mix (http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/six/nofury.html) that appears to be more in line with a NOxplode or WF. If it's the other one, I'd consider trying it, just because the pills that I have are lacking in the energy component so I'd be interested to see how the fuller supplement works.

So I've decided that I'm craving pizza way too bad, and I don't feel like wasting a cheat meal on it. I've found a recipe for whole wheat pizza dough (http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Amazing-Whole-Wheat-Pizza-Crust/Detail.aspx) and I'll be using the thin-crust variation to feed my craving tonight. I've decided I'll be using ham (Either brown sugar, or honey cured), balsamic marinated cipolline onions, fresh fat-free mozzarella, and most likely fresh basil and/or sundried tomatoes. Can any of you think of anything else that would be good to throw on this? I'm trying to keep it low fat, even with the higher carbs, but I also want to make sure there's plenty of good protein on there. I will most definitely be posting back with my results...

Update 1: I'm letting the dough rise for the second time, and it's starting to look really good... I picked up the balsamic cipolline onions, mozzarella rolled up with sundried tomatoes (Only .5g less fat than the regular mozzerella so I figured I might as well enjoy it), about a quarter pound of honey-ham, a few paper thin sliced of prosciutto, some Italian turkey sausage, fresh cremini mushrooms, and a small bunch of fresh basil. I've got everything cut up and now I'm just waiting for the dough to finish it's second proof in about 35 minutes, and then it's 15 min in the oven until dinner. It feels good to cook again. I rarely have time to do it between school, work, and the gym.

http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w229/sanitariumite/Pizza.jpg

It was fantastic. The dough wasn't quite fully cooked in the middle, but I also think it may have been a little overtopped, and I don't have a pizza stone, so that also adds complications in cooking time. I think next time I'll take it down to 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes instead of the 16-20 at 425 the instructions gave me. I think next time I'll also forgo the prosciutto (Delicious, but a bit too much salt/fat than I really want right now) and instead use some roasted red peppers, or something else that would be similarly sweet. I'll probably also use less toppings in general. It still would've been good without the Cremini mushrooms and olives, and it probably would've cooked better as well. I spent about $35-40 on ingredients, but that also included the cost of flour, yeast, dried oregano, a jar of roasted garlic, and sun dried tomatoes, so I really only spent about $15-20 on the cost of ingredients for one 14" pizza, and now I've got the base materials to make the dough 7-8 more times, if not even more than that. IMO, it was Well worth it for a pizza you're not going to find at Domino's, and much healthier as well. I was going to have a 2 pieces before the gym, 2 after, and leave one for each of the roommates, but I ended up eating 6 of 8 pieces for dinner, and I'm gonna call this a night off... Tomorrow's shoulders and tris though!

On a side-note, my phone camera makes this pizza look like an oil painting.

Back to lifting today -- decided to start back on a West Side-ish routine, again. Speed legs today: 10 x 2 box squat below parallel at 225 (it was actually 4 x 3, 4 x 2; but it's same reps at 10 x 2). Also did 3 x 10 pullthroughs @ 200, 4 x 12-15 cable rope crunches @ 200, 3 x 6 db rows @ 90, and 3 x 10 shrugs @ 225 (light because my right shoulder was bothering me). I soooo hadn't eaten for this yesterday. :r

Off to the witch doctor in a bit for another adjustment. I fear this will become a weekly activity, which may not be bad ... it's just another expense to which I was not looking forward. :hn

Placed a new order for protein yesterday. Decided to get some ON Pro Complex for PWO shakes, finally (rocky road, of course) and some vanilla 100% whey for the versatility (i.e., mixing into oatmeal, adding to a Blizzard ... you know, the usual :r).

I need to get back on a regular clean eating routine, too. I'm also thinking about going into the gym twice a day -- cardio in the morning and lifting at night. Pretty sure Dr. MRS would kill me if I started; but that might have to be an acceptable risk. :p

OK ... I'm done rambling. :r :D :ze

Dokk when I do two a days my appetite goes through the roof. Usually about 8000 cal and I shoot for 300+grams of protein. If you are going to do this I suggest varying your cardio in the mornings so its not just running, I would add biking, swimming if possible, eliptical, and rowing. worked up to 8 sets of 315x2 at 1.23 m/s. Feeling pretty squirrely!!!! Finished up with some Glute ham raises, and some Single leg squats

Sounds good, bro.

I, on the other hand, am a broken little unicorn. :( Once the popping in my right shoulder went away, I did 5 x 5 on the clock on flat bench. Skull crushers were fine. Went to do standing overhead presses and my right shoulder was a mess on rep one. Oy. Went and did some tricep pressdowns and called it a day.

I really need to figure out this shoulder thing. So here's my question to you sporty folks:

How would I go about finding a good sports doctor who (a) can effectively diagnose my problem and (b) will understand that I won't give up lifting in the long-run???

I tried some last night with a PLPC: lifts, presses, clips, lights. hydrated/dehydrated with rum.

oh wait ... I have a feeling that's not what you're talking about.

Thanks for that second link, P-dogg. I think I'll start working some of those exercises in once or twice a week as PT. I like that I could do them traveling with something in my hotel room, too. :)

2 scoops WF and 2 jet fuel pills today and didn't do a damn thing for me. Thinking about taking 2 weeks off of taking anything and see if that helps. Starting to piss me off

before you do that try 4 scoops I'm curious to see what it does for you, and scrap the jet fuel (whatever that is)

sounds like you need to reset your caffeine clock. isn't it Taurine that does that?

I don't have an answer for you; but this reminds me of my favorite weightlifting quotation. In an interview, Ed Coan was asked, "YOU DON'T TRAIN MUSCLES LIKE BICEPS?"

And his response was, "Nope, biceps are like ornaments on a xmas tree." :r

I dont train biceps that often, but when I do I only superset stuff together. I get extreme pump. This is good because I can spend more time on the muscles that count!:r
