At 47 and haven't worked out in over 10 years, I started back 4 months ago and I am really happy with my progress...went from 150 on the bench to 275-6 times and see and feel a huge difference. Amazing the memory your muscles have....I think my wife even likes the progress!!!

Hey... I want samples too! These guys already are huge... I'm still small!

Being double jointed in my shoulder can cause some really crappy problems... like when I'm holding weight and it pops out of socket. Ugh. Happened again 2 days ago but, luckily, didn't hurt myself too bad...

Speaking of shoulders, just got done. My partner and I had to get in a quick workout, shortest workout I've had but very nice.

DB presses
Smith machine, behind the neck presses
Upright row
Single arm lat raises

So is it like an amped up version of espresso (which is my pre-workout "supplement") or is it a different beast altogether? Anything to worry about when taking stuff like that, Huy? I've never tried any pre-workout thing thus far... aside from espresso, that is... :)

I'm not much of a expresso drinker, caffeine doesn't do much for me. Honestly, Dan. Taking PWO is liking opening Pandoras box, if I could go back in time I would not take it. I depend on with every workout, or I'll just feel like I didn't have a good work out. I don't believe/know if there's anything to worry about other than the jittery/meth like feeling. I can give you a small sample if you like... since geRRy is MIA.

Hit a big P.R. and milestone tonight. Finally hit 225 on the barbell bench press for the first time...for 10 reps, followed by 225x 8, 225x6, 225x5! I've only been using dumbbells this whole time and help with my stability and form.

Feels really good to progress this far, considering 135 was a real challenge for me a little over a year ago. I don't really care what my numbers are... as long as I see them go up over time, I can be happy!

Got 205 up on flat bench twice last week, picked up 215 and it felt like I was trying to bench a Volvo. I should be able to get that within a month, I hope... then on to 225... the goal I thought unattainable... :)

By the way, still weighing in at 150 (sometimes creeping close to 155).

Question:

What recommendation(s) do you have for a good fat burning supplement that has been working for you (besides diet)?

Adriftpanda
11-19-2012, 03:38 AM
Are you looking to work out as well or have you been working out? In all honesty Mark. I don't recommend taking anything, but that's just me. I'm a firm believer in a clean diet and exercise, and you should see results in no time. Less calories in and more calories out will help with your weight (if that's your goal). I started around 220 and dropped about 45lb in less than 8 months, with proper nutrition and training.

Again, this is me and this is what worked best for me. One thing you have to remember about dieting and getting back in shape is, it's a process and you just have to be patient with it. Your body will not change over night. Hope that's any sort of help to you.

I think geRRy hates you, Tom. He gave me soooo many PWO samples and even gave me a couple bottles of jack3d. He told me not to tell you because he didn't want to hurt your feelings. :=:

Thanks for the feedback Huy. I'm gonna be getting back into my upper body workout once again. I walk 7 days a week early in the AM with my dog. We generally head out just before 0500 for a 50 minute walk. This is one thing that has helped keep my weight down (that is at 240 lbs). I do agree with you, diet is key, low calorie count, staying hydrated, exercise, and patients. My goal is to reduce my weight down to a 195 lbs. So, onwards we go...:tu

Inclines are the best for me, Brent, I can usually work through the discomfort with minimal "popping". Flats are OK.....I don't do declines, never have. I don't care for the position. I work lower chest with a combination of weighted dips and Hammer Strength declines.

Is it scar tissue that's the issue? If so, check out Graston Technique. If your chiro is not certified, look for one that is. Makes a huge differernce. Basically they scrape the scar tissue off the area and it gets absorbed into the body. You'll have a big black-n-blue mark, but tremendous range of motion. 1 or 2 treatments are all that is needed.

I am quite suprised your chiro took an X-ray. That's used more as a sales pitch to confirm what they already know in terms the customer is more likely to bite on than just the chiro's opinion.

He is certified. He mostly wanted the X-Ray of my neck (and he did not charge me for any of the X-Rays) to see the angles of my cervical vertabrae. My neck lools like E.T., the vertabrae are basically is a straight line jutting forward....no curvature whatsoever.

My shoulder issue doesn't appear to be scar tissue, it looks more structural to me. I will ask more questions on my visit today. Thank you for the link.

I am sure you must have scar tissue areas, just about anyone who does any real exercise will. You can feel them when the dull blade scrapes along the skin. The scar tissue is slightly raised. I am sure your chiro can feel that by hand too.

What (if any) multivitamins do any of you take? Thoughts? For the past couple of years I've taken Opti-Men(good value/good product). Have always been interested in Orange Triad so picked up a couple of bottles and plan on starting it when I polish off my current bottle of Opti-Men.

I'm not a big multi vitamin guy, but a lot of people take them (I should too). My diet is pretty clean, so I don't worry about it too often.

So I mentioned doing chest 2 times a week. Hit up chest today and holy cow, my gains were off the hook the last 2 weeks. 110 DB presses 8x, most I've ever done. Incline 105 DB presses 8x.

It could be my new PWO as well, started taking Beast. Best PWO I've used.

Back and traps for me. Lots of reps at a pretty heavy weight on T-Bars, kept up the reps for some moderate weight Bent Over Rows. I was feeling "full" so I skipped right to traps and did some heavy shrugs and repped it out on dumbbell shrugs. Chest tomorrow, then a forced day off Wednesday for some training at work.

Did two mat Pilates classes this week. Man, are they difficult and exactly what every male should be doing in the gym. Kind of intimidating to be 1 guy in a class of 30 women... Pilates works the core muscles like no other style of exercise and the methods taught in the class really help in advancing technique with weights and stretching.

I'd say Pilates is the most beneficial thing men should be doing in the gym.

You'd be real impressed with a pilates class the exercise philosophy of Joseph Pilates. You'll give a point or two bonus to a few of the ladies when you see what some can do with their core!

From wikipedia:

Pilates was originally a gymnast, diver, and bodybuilder, but when he moved to England in 1912, he earned a living as a professional boxer, circus-performer, and self-defense trainer at police schools and Scotland Yard. Nevertheless, the British authorities interned him during World War I along with other German citizens in an internment camp, first in Lancaster Castle where he taught wrestling and self-defence, boasting that his students would emerge stronger than they were before their internment. It was here that he began refining and teaching his minimal equipment system of mat exercises that later became "Contrology". He was then transferred to another internment camp on the Isle of Man. During this involuntary break, he began to intensively develop his concept of an integrated, comprehensive system of physical exercise, which he himself called "Contrology." He studied yoga and the movements of animals and trained his fellow inmates in fitness and exercises. It is told that these inmates survived the 1918 flu pandemic due to their good physical shape.

Got a great back workout today, stayed with 225 on bent over rows. Went from over 20 reps on the first set to barely able to get 12 by the last, dropping the rest every set. Then 4 plates and a quarter on T-bars for the same kind of reps. Low cable rows were enxt, followed by wide grip pullups, which were in sets of 8 because I was shot.

Chest workout tomorrow morning before I head to the MoB Herf, going to have to pack some protein for the afternoon. :r

Howdy all. Just dropping by to say hello and get some motivation from you guys.

Been a few years since I hit the gym and today was day 3. Feeling good every morning with a nice soreness. Day 1 did chest day 2 back and today arms. Man I missed the gym. Hopefully soon I can bump up from low weight/ high reps to heavy weight.

Also been changing the diet and trying to eat 5-6 times a day to help drop a lot of extra weight. Once my protein and glutamine come in I'll be back to my old
Routine.

Any guys got any tips to help get back in Shape? I do my 20-30 minutes of cardio plus about a hour of weight lifting.

Consistency is the key right now, Frank, sounds like you are on the right track....make it "habit", and the results will come.

Killer back workout today, did some heavy rowing (two types of T-bar, barbell, dumbbell and cable). Threw in some bodyweight pullups and stretches to finish. Doubling up chest and shoulders tomorrow as I have to take an extra day off on Saturday.

Sounds like you are in need of serious stretching! When you are building muscle as you are, the muscles get tight on healing. Do a light stretch after cardio - before weights, and then a longer stretch after the weights. The next day soreness will be less. Especially large muscle groups both upper and lower body.

Don't forget the exercise triangle - weights, cardio, stretching. You have to hit all three equally. :tu

Getting to the gym is half the battle. Changes won't happen over night, patience is the key. If you are trying to lose some extra weight, try HIIT (high intensive interval training).

Get two towels and put one right next to your inner part of your hand on both sides. Do as many regular pull ups you can do normally.. right before you feel like you can't do anymore grab the towels and hang literally until you loose all strength and grip. I rested 5 mins between sets. After a few months of doing so every 3 days, you should be good :)

Yeah, it was getting to the point where I almost felt out of breath because I was breathing so quickly. I get the same way with energy drinks now too, so I just stopped caffeine altogether. Since I do competitive pistol and rifle shooting, it's it helps me stay steady. Now I just take an intraworkout supplement (BCAAs and glutamine) when I'm lifting.

It was a hard hitting game, Mark, but my elbow and shoulder actually feel better....even though I got the arm cranked by one of their D-men, If I can get some ZZZs, back to the gym manana.

Hit back, biceps, and traps today. 225x12, 10, 10, 8 for bent over rows is finally starting feel light after a couple of weeks of slowly increasing the rep count. Also hit 95x12,10,10,8 on the curls...spring break is coming up after all :)

On another note, I'm loving M-Stak (day 2), really makes me feel strong and focused.

Mark, we aren't even sure. The owner wasn't even sure. The vet thinks she's a snoozle mix (I know I spelled that wrong). She weighs 13.4lb but because of the condition we got her in, I'm not sure if that's the average weight she should be.

Been doing the Strong lifts 5X5 workout for about 3 weeks now. Its a pretty interesting workout. The squats are getting easier despite the weight going up. my form is getting better and making them easier to do.

The workout is based on 5 diff. lifts: squat, bench press, dead lift, barbell shoulder press, bent over rows. everything is 5 sets of 5 reps, except for dead lifts, its only 1 set of 5 reps.

Day 1 is squats, bench, and rows.

day 2 is squats, press, and dead lift.

workouts are every monday, wednesday, and friday. Every day you you increase your weight 5 pounds, except for the dead lifts, you increase by 10 pounds.

Its a pretty good workout to get strong and gain muscle.

if you want more info, go to stronglifts.com

Yeah I offered up half a can of NO Xplode because my body is way too sensitive to caffeine for some reason. I was shaking in the gym haha!

Next time I get some more freebees from my online supplement store, I'll offer them up! My house is less than 10 minutes away from the ProSource factory, so I get lots of samples when I stop in.

They don't call Monday National Chest Day for nothing...:D I do my best to keep my splits so that Chest doesn't hit on Monday but sometimes it happens.

Did Chest/Triceps yesterday. Wasn't feeling it and my shoulder was a tad sore so I went high rep on chest and hit tris hard. Did some flat dumbbell presses and flyes, incline barbell press, Crossovers, then onto Tris.

Today is a high rep legs day. Doing between 20-50 reps on most exercises. Gonna fall over dead once I'm done...

Shoulders and Tris today. I felt a little more tired than usual, so I had to keep the same amount of reps/weight as last time. Until I can do 12,10,10,and 8 reps in a set, I stay at the same weight. After I get that, I go up in weight and drop the rep count, then slowly build up again. It's really helped me build my strength.

You know you had a good leg workout when you want to throw up.

When I was younger, Hujy, our leg day would consist of way too many sets of heavy squats, followed by a 10 minute drive to a toboggan hill down the raod. We would run sprints up the hill, our goal being 10. None of us ever made it, by run number 7 or so, either our hamstrings would lock up, or we would literally be puking our guts out.

I think it was around those days I began to train on an empty stomach, and do so to this day.
