I had something at Dan McGuinness this past weekend herfing with Bill86 that I have never had, and never
would have asked for, and maybe never ask for again. But it was wild. She said, "it's Cider" and it was beery,
maybe apple-y, but it had this intense aftertaste that I thought was like tomato. It was freaking wild. Wish I
had gone up to the tap and inspected it. I still am flammered by you guys and your expensive beers.

The first batch released last summer sold out quickly indeed but not because of Brewmasters. They released a second batch in November/December to coincide with the premier of Brewmasters and that second batch was even more difficult to find due to the show. Good stuff, though. Not sure if it's worth all the trouble, but very good nonetheless.

Age/cellar it, the hops will fade and it will be more malty. May defeat the purpose of that particular beer, but they will fade fairly quick and it will give you some idea of what aging does to beers (and a cheap lesson too as you already bought the beer). Open one every 3-4 months. It's 8.5 ABV, should hold up well and become more malty as the hops fade.

BTW, I am not advocating aging beers like this one. Just in this case, he doesn't like the beer he already has, was interested in what aging does to beers.....seems like a slam dunk. :2 I don't want to start the whole "you're not supposed to age hoppy beers" debate. :r

I was the same way for the longest time. I couldnt stand IPA's. Then for the sake of expanding my horizons and at least saying i tried, i picked up a few IPA samplers from the local store. Once you have a GOOD IPA, you almost have to like them. While not my favorite style of beer some of them are just damn good. Three Floyds Dreadnaught and Stone Ruination come to mind. I also like the DFH 120 minute IPA.

The other night I had Cigar City Hunahpu (thanks Seth) and really enjoyed it. It was a pretty intense beer, flavor wise. The ingredients were very pronounced, started with a smell of chocolate but the intial taste was the hot pepper which then subsided to cinnamon but the vanilla lingered on the finish. I WILL be attending next year's release so I can get more of it.

However, The Cigar City Vuja De may have stolen the show. It was just a stellar beer.

Not sure what part of the hoppiness you don't like, but you'll find that the aroma and some of the flavor will fade, but the overall bitterness will stay about the same. However, the beer will end up tasting more malty so it might fit in your wheelhouse better. Imperial IPAs, strong ales, and barleywines all have a very similar profile--lots of hops complemented by lots of malt to even things out. Over time, they all kind of blend together into similar, more balanced beers. Good luck enjoying your trip through beerdom!

No, they are both good at different things. Both have good (and meh) brews in there regular line-ups but Terrapin's Side Projects are hit or miss. Its weird because when they are on (Wake-n-bake, Hopzilla) they are on, but then they flub on others. Sweetwater's Dank Tank are consistently good beers, rarely great but always good. I guess what I am saying is Sweetwater is consistent but rarely mind blowing, where Terrapin shows flashes of brilliance but when they often seem to miss.

Oh and drinking a KBS as I type :D

Friday night R.J. Rockers Buckwheat After Dark. They don't like it much at BA, but it was good for me,
very refreshing and just what I needed. Last night had the Red label Chimay from my three pack, went
with the lowest-reviewed first, it was great with a Cruzado cigar that BC Axeman sent me. Had a delicious
wine flavor but plenty of Ale to keep it balanced. Ironic that I was smoking a cigar with a name like "Cross"
and drinking beer made by monks on Easter weekend. The cigar got great marks on my blog, I was very
pleasantly surprised.

Jackie-O Vanilla Bean Dark Apparition Rum Barrel
Hair of the Dog Blue Dot IIPA
GD Barrel Aged Yeti
Flying Dog - Wild Dog
Upland Double Dragonfly IIPA
Alpine Brewing - Odens Raven (RIS)
Troegs - Scratch Beer #42 - Belgian Brown (interesting beer, wonderful aroma)
Ballast Point - Imperial Porter
Avery 12th Anniversary (very interesting spiced beer)
Captain Lawrence - Nor'easter (interesting elderberry winter warmer)
Crooked Line - IIPA
Etaller - Doppelbock
Funky Buddha - Nikolai Vorlauf (bourbon RIS, very interesting)
Bootlegger's IIPA (knuckle sandwich?)

Glad to see they are getting some distribution.

They're not distributed down here, some of the guys are crazy beer traders and get the stuff shipped to them from guys around the country. I am doing my best to keep up (pull my weight) and bring good non-locally available beers (we drink local stuff too but Monday nights are for 'special' stuff) but it's tough to keep up with some of them.

Basically we all bring a beer or two and share them all. The bar we meet at is cool, and we always buy a pint or food or whatever, but they actual set up Mondays for this 'beer social' as they call it. Really awesome to get to try these great beers down in S.FL.

I'm liking it so far. The lemon is there but it's not too much, for me it works nicely with the pine-y hops. Some nice malty sweetness underneath (as one kind of expects in a hoppy DFH.) Not too boozy. I'm not sure I'd rather pay $4 more for it than for a Squall, but it's pretty good.

I had a bottle this weekend at Funky Buddha Lounge ( and brewery - top American Porter on BA right now, with their Bacon Maple Coffee Porter) in Boca at their comedy night, the first glass was good. But the second, maybe got too warm (and I like warm beer in general) for itself and got a little funky/weird with the lemon. But overall a good beer that I really enjoyed the first 'pint' of, 750mL was too much for this sissy though. :r

.......or maybe it was the hookah smoke in the place affecting my taste buds....:r It's a funny place, they allow hookah smoking inside but nothing (cigar or cigarette) else, I have not tried hookah yet but I am curious.

http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii88/kaisersozei/Beer/HarpoonOyster.jpg

I'm a fan of extreme brewing, but leave it to some enterprising Masshole brewmaster at Harpoon to decide that oysters would be a good addition to the grain bill :pu

However, I have to say that it was a very good stout. Smokey & salty on the finish, but lots of nice roasted coffee and dark chocolate tones. Had a little twang, which might be the "mineral" character mentioned on the label. Surprisingly, this is the second year of production for this small batch brew. Missed it the first time around.

That one did not get a fair review/chance; it was the last beer opened (don't know why), and the only beer tried after lighting a cigar outside. :r But that said it was very nice. Nice citrus flavor and hop aroma, the bitterness was on the higher side which I like to be balanced with more hop flavor, but it was a very well made beer.

I've got a large bottle of Lagunitas Cappucino Stout (I think?) at home I've been meaning to try. Tonight might be the night!

Another banner night at Coffee District, and had a great time with everyone great beers or not....but they were great:

-Three Floyds - Rabbid Rabbit (saison)
-New Glarus Unplugged - Old English Porter (this was very good!)
-Shiner Ruby Redbird (I actually missed this one)
-Coronado Islander IPA
-Haand Brewery - Smokey Lambic (this was weirrrrd, others liked it, and while I love sours the smokiness with the sour just did not work for me, well made beer though, they did a good job with it despite it not being 'my thing')
-New Belgium - Sahti (eh, so-so)
Goose Island - Pepe Nero (interesting beer, pretty good too)
Foothills Brewery - Hoppyum (OK)
Ommegang - Cup o' Kindness (belgian /scottish ale, smokey with heather, good beer)
Rasputin - 12th Anni Bourbon Barrel (nice beer)
Widmer Bros - Galaxy hopped barleywine (OK)
Hair of the Dog - Doggie Claws (really good)
Liefmans - Brut (surprise of the night, very well made beer.....and most important not too sweet!)

Hillfarmstead - Jim (Black IPA aged in Pinot Noir Barrels and dry-hopped with Simcoe, this was and exxxxxcellent beer, very complex with a ton going on, but dry and drinkable, very rare beer as well, only 300 bottles made :jd

Oh, and one more, last beer of the night:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2758/5707101352_b618ce09b6_z.jpg

It was amazing! It's Black Tuesday (already bourbon barrel aged) aged with cocoa nibs and vanilla. I was afraid it would be too sweet and cloying (a couple Bruery beers strike me as this) but it was not. The first sip the finish lasted forever, reminded me of Westy 12 that way. Huge bourbon character, and nice choclate and vanilla, very complex but drinkable beer. A+:tu

:r Most of the guys last night had never heard of it, had to bring it up on my iPhone, it's a "classic" (note the quotes :r)

No one had tried it before, not even the guy that brought it, made it extra special that we were all tasting it for the first time together.

ahhh Scuttlebutt. I grew up 10 minutes from Scuttlebutt(Everett) and Red Hook(Woodinville). I was never a huge fan of either, but I have heard that Scuttlebutt has improved in the last few years.

Last night I had 3 Mongo IPA from Port and 2 Alpine Nelson at the bar. Tonight it is Torpedo.
