Sierra Neveda 30th bock. It had a subtle palate, but it was good. Green apple and pear were the flavors with a malty backbone to give it balance. This was a really really good beer. Complex, and I think I will pick up some more:tu

I just finished a bomber of Sierra Nevada 30th Avvinversary Imperial Helles Bock. Simply awesome. I'm going to say this is one of the top ten best beers I've ever had.

I had another bomber of this. Still some bottles out there. Seriously, I thought more people would enjoy this as much as me, but apparently its me and Warren that love this beer.:r

Interesting. See, I like Fat Tire and I've been trying to decide just exactly what that putrid taste was I got from the Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale, and now that you mention it I think it was 'rotted pine tree'. Or to borrow from DBall, unbridled sorrow. :r I think I just don't like IPA's or something. Anybody know any that aren't so bitter that it's like drinking alum strained through turpentine? God, that stuff is nasty.

This may seem counter-intuitive, but you might want to move up to an Imperial (Double) IPA. The reason is that the brewer has to balance the higher IBU with a higher grain bill, giving these more of a sweet, malty character than your standard IPA. Almost a barleywine, but not quite.

In this style, I'd recommend Avery Maharaja, and Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA or Burton Baton. If you can find Pliny the Elder, that is also supposed to be an excellent example of the category, but I've never had one and can't comment.

Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a try. I tell you, it's a whole new world out there trying to "explore new beers". I've found some stuff that is just nirvana and stuff that just about makes me want to hurl.

Can you give me a poor man's explanation of IBU and how I can avoid "really bitter tasting" beers? I would appreciate it.

IBU = International Bitterness Units

Higher IBU the more bitter. Usually on the packaging especially on IPAs.

You may not be against the bitterness but the type of bitterness. You will find that some hops are citrusy, some are piney, some are spicy, etc. If you don't like the piney taste try a more citrusy IPA (Sweetwater IPA comes to mind). Like Gerard said the DIPAs often have more malt to balance the addition of hops so try those as well. Then if you decide you don't like hoppy beers there is no harm. Plenty of other styles out there.

It's a single IPA, and I'm a fan of bitter stuff, so my judgment may be off, but I found their IPA extremely drinkable. Don't go buying a sixer of it until you try it, but if you find it on tap or can get a single bottle, give it a go.

I would love to start a "tasting club" here. I think it would introduce people to new wines, help train palettes, most importantly get people thinking and learning about wine.

heres how it would work:

-Every week/ 2 weeks someone picks a varietal and/or region- this can be chosen out of a hat or have a list set up.

Example- Joe_Smith picks- California Syrah
Everyone goes out and buys a bottle off CA syrah and posts tasting notes- we can eventually modify this to CA Syrah under $20 or Dry Creek Valley Syrah, etc.

-We come up with standard tasting guidelines- notes for sight / nose / taste - etc

- You can taste as many wines as you want to during the alloted time period.

What do you guys think? We can add some guidelines along the way.

It looks like they just updated the tap list. Before we went there, they did not have the list updated, but only a few things changed. The pub menu hasn't changed that much, but they do have braised goat tacos that were amazing. The burger is outstanding, and from what everyone at the pub said, there is nothing on the menu that sucks at all.

Bourbon Barrel Heine Brothers Coffee Stout

Thanks Tom.

This is a tasty beer. I wish it was a tad more thicker but there are plenty of flavors but it's odd that you don't always taste them. Some sips I seem to taste more coffee others I get more vanilla. The bourbon barrel flavor is almost overpowering but not bad.

Spending the weekend in Potosi WI. We visited the Potosi brewery. The beer is good. I had had it in Madison in bottles. It is significantly better on tap at the brewery. I think the pasteurization process changes the flavor in the bottles. I have particularly enjoyed their IPA and Stout. On tap at the brewery those are very good beers. Full of flavor and nuance. A nice treat. We had brought Avery Barleywine, Imperial Stout and IPA as well as some Dogfishhead 90 min to have back in the inn. :) All in all lots of tasty beer.

Schlafly Hop Harvest Ale
Schlafly 20th Anniversary Series Release No.1 (Imperial Pilsner)
Chimay (Red, White, and Blue... I couldn't make up my mind)
Old Rasputin XII
Old Stock Ale

I'm thoroughly enjoying the Hop Harvest Ale for now... once the wife goes to bed I may try the others.

I love the old raspiutin. A bar close to me keeps it on tap its that or old engine oil every time.

Regrettably I have not yet had the chance to taste Bourbon Barrel aged brew due to the unrealistic nightmare that's is Craft beer regulations in Alabama I am hoping to make a large purchase in Atlanta if Albert will entertain my lack of knowledge

I have never been so excited about taking someone shopping...don't tell my wife

Fantastic lineup bro! How was the Dark Lord and Founders?

Really liked both, though I drank the DL first and it kind of influenced the flavors of all the subsequent beers. The 09 DL is very sweet to me, and not my favorite DL year as a result. The KBS certainly has more of a hard alcohol thing going, but not overwhelming.

This was my last pickup. I drank it with Echo's Birthday Lobster Dinner.

I had an 07 recently which knocked my socks off. Just hot enough to enjoy the hard alcohol kick, but not too much. The 08 wasn't as unique, but it also may have been influenced by the Dark Lord I drank before it.

Trying the 08 and 09 back to back on tap last year was interesting. What a difference.

Three Floyds is one of my favorite breweries. Bell's and Founders are also favorites.

I'll tell you a beer I am NOT enjoying: Bell's Cherry Stout. Oily mouthfeel, lacked sweetness, very tart, the flavors did not blend well at all, especially as the beer warmed--it was as if someone added unsweetened cherry juice to a stout.

Which is pretty much what they say they did. I expected more from this. :(

Based upon that evaluation I suggest you stay clear, very clear of Founder's Cerise.

Not a stout.
Not Good.
I bought a 4 pack and threw two away.
