I had a Founders Imperial Stout last night. Just blew me away. You guys who (rightfully so) love Breakfast Stout need to buy a 4 pack of this. To me the flavors seem even more "intense" than FBS. The whole beer seems "denser." Very plummy, with strong undertones of coffee and chocolate. Also a strong hops finish. It's ever so slightly boozy, but in no way detracts from the beer. It's only released during the month of January, so I'm going to stock up on several 4 packs before it disappears.

I know its blasphemy, but Budweiser! I enjoy many good beers - the fridge is stocked with sierra nevada, guinness, etc., but every now and then I like to go slumming. It sometimes hits the spot. Budweiser has been lately.

I haven't tried Glissade yet, but want to get some soon. Here is an interesting review from BeerAdvocate:

...this is a replica of the Coors beer from the 70's, the cult classic. If you want to know what all the fuss was about, why kids loaded up their parents station wagons, drove the stuff to the East Coast and made out like bandits, try Glissade, it's a virtual taste replica.

I haven't tried Glissade yet, but want to get some soon. Here is an interesting review from BeerAdvocate:

that is interesting. I'm sure Coors of the 70's was a very different product from today's adjunct Coors. I will have my father drink one tomorrow and ask him if it is similar to 1970's Coors.

Glissade is a tasty beer. Pick some up when you get the chance.

I wanted to try Founders Double Trouble since I've liked everything I've had from Founders. Double Trouble is good, but IMO Bell's HopSlam is better. I'd say that Double Trouble is more of a "western" DIPA, as it's more bitter. HopSlam has the hoppy bitterness, but it's balanced by the sweetness from the honey. Different strokes for different folks, but I like the HopSlam better.

Very good beer, but not great IMO. They did a good job keeping it balanced though, usually beer put into spirit barrels are higher alcohol and/or strongly flavored (porters, stouts, barleywines, etc.) but Dead Guy isn't really like that. It had a very subtle flavor of whiskey/oak to it. I tried it at the Jupiter Beer Festival a couple weeks ago, it was at the bottom of the beer list and when I asked for it the guy put his fingers over his lips as if to say, keep it quiet, guess they didn't have much of it. Anyway, worth a purchase but I would not knock down women and small children to get more of it. :tu

http://www.fototime.com/6D3919735783721/orig.jpg

Here is a little info on the brew:

Ommegang Bière de Mars is a Belgian-style amber ale with a bit of magical space dust woven in - Brettanomyces bruxellensis, a wild-yeast used in the secondary fermentation. The Brett imparts added tartness, a bit of zing and some farmhouse funkiness. Also dry-hopped, this new ale continues our exploration of using Brett for secondary fermentation in limited-release beers.

Gladly... The taste. ;)

It's been over a year since I had it, but I remember it just having a very unpleasant taste. I'd say it tastes like old socks and bad whiskey.

FWIW, I agree with the people here that gave it low reviews. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1199/24905/?view=beer&sort=low&start=0

I generally like Founders, but they missed on this one as far as I am concerned. I think most the people who rated it high just did so because they're afraid to say a Founders creation tastes like crap.

I might have to try it then:D

Seriously though, it sounds good from what I read. Think classic sea fairing ports, local pubs, and weathered old fisherman. This old ale is brewed with molasses and an insane focus on the malt bill, then aged in oak. The result is a strong, rich, malty-delight that’s deceptively smooth and drinkable.

This is my first post and its because I wanted to make sure you knew why those 4-packs of Founders differed.. those two with similar packaging are in the packaging format that is only 1.5-2.5 yrs old. That Curmudgeon is in the old style packaging, and should have aged VERY well! consider yourself lucky. I would easily trade a 4-pack of the current stuff(which I LOVE) for 2 bottles of those!(since I turned 21 in May and I like to try aged beers.. but havn't been able to freely buy until recently!) I found Founders Pale Ale in a 6-pack old packaging at CVS here in East Lansing and got one... the other was gone when I went back but I'll bet the distributor took it back or something. That beer was fantastic, and generally Pale Ales aren't renowned for aging!

Sorry for the ramble. I am from the Grand Rapids area and I will say that they do a Maple Bourbon Barrel aged old ale which is a favorite of many and absolutely fantastic. Black Biscuit. They JUST ran out the other day. Anyways, enjoy the Curmudgeon and other beers in your haul!

Also, if you come across some Founders Nemesis, by ALL MEANS, pick it up! Most places only an hour from GR got about 1 case max. Some bigger retailers received 2. limits were usually 1-2 bottles. I screwed myself and didn't buy a case at Founders when I had the chance. It has very very high ratings but cannot be a long-time top 10 beer like other Founders brews because the recipe changes annually and is only brewed that one time. Even though the reviews are very good, people seem to unanimously agree, myself included, that it can get EVEN BETTER! It is a little boozy, but then again, it is a maple bourbon barrel aged wheat wine. The value of this beer will be probably over $30/bottle to many by fall. Probably over $50 by December 2011 when 2011 Nemesis is released. It is VERY limited and I am scavenging to get my hands on more.. I picked up a single bottle yesterday.

Just picked up a 12 of the magic hat vinyl. Wishful thinking calling it a spring release for Vermonters in February. Good brew.

Drinking a Surly Furious and grilling some burgers and chicken on the grill. It's not spring yet, but I'm ready!

Picked up a few new ones this past week. Bluegrass Brewing Company American Pale Ale and Christian Moerlein Over-the-Rhine Ale. :chr

Both are local and very tasty :tu

Went to a local pub, and drank 4 pitchers of Lake Placid Ubu Ale, with friends. Can't ask for a better evening.

Out of all the Magic Hat beers I have had, #9 was my least favorite. I really enjoyed the Lucky Kat and the seasonal Howl the best.

At a restaurant last night I had a Green Flash West Coast IPA. It was OK. I enjoyed the grape fruit flavor of the simcoe hops but there was some other hop in there that was leaving a lingering bitterness on my tongue. I also wasn't really picking up a terribly complex malt profile from the beer either.

Welcome to the CA style IPA. :D

You should definitely try Hop Head Red by Green Flash if you get the chance. Absolutely their best beer.

Nice rye taste. malty but a little thin. overall, pretty good change of pass when I still want something nice and dark but a little on the thinner side.
