Cracked open a "Hop Stoopid Ale" tonight, an Imperial IPA by Lagunitas in Petaluma, CA:

http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii88/kaisersozei/Beer/hopstoopid.jpg

Lagunitas makes some good beer (IPA, Maximus,) and some crap (Brown Shugga.) This one was crap. As the label says, this was a heavily hopped IPA: 102 IBUs! Those are International Bittering Units, a measure of the bitterness of a beer derived from the hops. For comparison purposes, a pale ale runs 20-50 IBU and an IPA at around 60 or less.

I thought this one was very thin, not well balanced by the malt. Check out the color in my photo--much paler than I expected. Watery, overwhelmingly hoppy just for the sake of hops--and I'm a hophead ho. Pineapple aroma & very citrusy flavor. The aftertaste left me with an unpleasant phlegmy sensation.

At 100 IBUs, Stone Ruination is 100x better.

I also have a Lagunitas Belgian Tripel waiting to be opened: We're Only in it for the Money. Based on tonight's disappointment I'm not sure if I want to try this one, or let it sit for a few years. The reviews on BeerAdvocate rate Hop Stoopid very high (A-)--not sure why, I didn't find it that good.

Lagunitas Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale

http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii88/kaisersozei/Beer/ShutdownAle.jpg

This wasn't a bad beer, but it reminded me too much of what my homebrew tastes like if I'm not too worried about a recipe, and just see how much malt & hops I can throw together. This is listed as an American Strong Ale: 9% ABV, 72 IBU. Yep, that's pretty much how I brew.... The final product is fruity sweet with a nice, citrusy hop bite. Drinkable, but unremarkable.

After having a number of Lagunitas' brews, I get the feeling that these guys are more interested in edgy, tongue-in-cheek marketing than they are in brewing outstanding beer. I've been brewing for over 15 years, and I swear that my own "award winning" home brew is just as good, if not better in certain styles. They have some drinkable ales, but it seems like they put more effort into coming-up with creative stuff to put on their labels. At nearly $10 a sixpack, I think they're kind of like the Gurkha of the microbrew world. :2

I was planning on having my Erdinger's Dunkel last night but then my distributor called and told me that my Guiness 250th Anniversary had arrived. I picked up a 2 six packs and sampled a few last night. It was good, Guiness-esque, just seemed a little watered-down with more fizz. I probably will not be buying these again as I like the regular Guiness draught better and these are $2+ per bottle. Not worth it in my opinion.

I'm glad you liked it. I was looking for a crisper but still hoppy beer than many of the APA/IPAs that I can buy. Used soft water, mashed low and used chico yeast. I have a couple of more beers in the works that I'll share when they're ready. Been getting more into brewing these past few weeks for some reason. Today at work I tried Hoegaarden for the first time and liked it very much. Kinda like Blue Moon but not a strong citrus flavor, It was excellent. I also had Sam Adams Black Lager. I gotta say this is one of my favorite beers, soo damn tasty :dr

A quote from Sam Adams...

"When one sees a beer with a darker complexion these days, more often than not it’s a Porter or Stout. However looks can be deceiving. There exists a style older than both and generally less well known; the Schwarzbier, which literally translated is “Black Beer.” Unlike its dark cousins which both hail from Britain and are highly hopped ales, Schwarzbier comes from Germany, is lightly hopped and is fermented using a bottom fermenting lager yeast. Samuel Adams® Black Lager is brewed in the tradition of the latter. A medium bodied beer brewed using several different roasts of malt to give the end product a smooth body and a depth of malt character that has to be tasted to be believed.
Carafa® is a registered trademark of Weyermann Malt, Bamburg, Germany."

Grimbergen double.
Can somebody give me some belgian beer recommendations. I have a belgian supermarket on my way to work that is going to close this or next year and i want to sample more foreign beer.

Had a Stone Smoked Porter last night:

This was an awesome beer--rich and flavorful! Nuts, roast coffee, sweet chocolate and just the right hint of smokiness. Paired perfectly with my dinner of gazpacho, apple wood smoked pork tenderloin with an apricot glaze, red pepper risotto, and summer squash casserole. :dr

Right now I have two kegs on tap:

Double Stout
Imperial IPA

IIPA is mine, as in I made it, and the DS is a buddy that I'm slowing dragging into the HB world.

Have a Munich Helles aging right now and will be the next on tap. Also, there is a keg of some kind of flavored ale in the kegerator right now. It's been there since Memorial Day....I should revisit it to see if it has improved with a little more age.

Commercial Brews:

Stone Ruination (cannot get enough of this stuff)
New Belgium 1554
Guinness (cans only, don't bring that bottled fizzy Guinness into my house)

I'm not much of a beer drinker, but I've been working on a 6 pack of Shiner Smokehaus that I'm liking a lot.

Lately, I've been enjoying Okocim porter.

Okocim is a Polish label. All of their beers have been quality, but I think that their Porter stands out above the rest. It is a bold powerhouse of a porter. I'm trying to recall the proper taste profile at the moment... strong coffee balanced with just a bit of cream and sugar, and a touch of woodsyness. Underneath it all rests a touch of anise to dance around on the finish.
