Phin & Matt's Extraordinary Ale, another Southern Tier brew

It was a good APA, nothing "extraordinary" though. I like that they used whole hops, but overall they were lost in the malt.

Got a few of these large formats last Thursday. They were $2.99 at Total Wine and I picked them up for $1.99 after the dollar off coupon. Great deal!! Sorry, had to gloat to someone - my wife doesn't see the value.

What did you think of that? Im a huge fan of the Little Sumpin Sumpin but i have yet to try the Wild.

Me likee. Made with Westmalle yeast strain, and like all things Lagunitus it is a tad sweet, but the hops, yeast, and booze balance that out nicely. It's nummy, I just finished another.

It'd be a great way for a small time or new brewery to get their beer in people's fridges. But I think the supplier and distribution chains are too varied and impermeable for this to be a national venture, or brewery driven...

and the dream dies :(....

It had lacto in it for sure, and pedio, and brett at the very least. I'll have to check my notes, but I use mixed cultures from whitelabs/wyeast as well as cultured bottle dregs from commercial sours. I think this particular beer was a mix of both.

Went to a Cigar City Brewing tasting of wood aged beers last night. Most were one-offs and not commercially available.

The list included; cedar, maple, raw oak, toasted oak, and hickory.

The beers that got these treatments were their IPA, RIS (Zhukov), Saison, Maduro Brown, and an as yet unreleased Belgian style that was super spicy aged with the cedar (it was INTENSE).

Overall a very interesting night and some great beers. My favorites were the Zhukov and the raw oak IPA (soooo much better IMO than with the cedar).

http://thisbeautifulmoment.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/breckenridge-vanilla-porter.jpg
Didn't know what to expect, but it was really very good. The vanilla was not as subtle as I was led to believe, but it was awesome. Went really well with a cigar (an LFD that also was very good). The vanilla reminded me of Zaya Rum, which I poured a finger of afterward to make sure I wasn't imagining things. I wasn't. ;)

Also had a couple of different pumpkin beers over the weekend. My favorite (by far) was Weyerbacher Imperial Pumkin Ale.

Odd. Almost like a Belgian IPA, and I think the tea leaves may have given it a bit too much astringency without adding much flavor/aroma. Hops came through pretty well. Lots of sediment, like lemonade with a lot of pulp.

I love craft beer, mostly stouts, porters, and dark ales. Some IPA's are also good.
Hop Noir is the best IPA that I have ever had.
On a recent trip to Russia I drank a dark Russian Ale, I can't remember the name but it but it was outstanding.

How's this year's Pumking compare with last year's? I've got 3 bottles already because it sells out so damn fast, but I refuse to drink it before October. Kinda like buying a Christmas tree in September, just doesn't feel right. I liked the '09 better than the '10.

Im normally the same way. it drives me nuts that seasonals seem to come out earlier and earlier so i try to hold off but the beers were a house warming gift. The gifter insisted we sit and drink and who am i to refuse drinking free beer. I thought the Pumking was very good. Had a very pleasant creamy/ gramcracker spice taste without being to in your face. Surly Bitter Brewer, first time with this one. Not sure why Bitter is in the title, easily the smoothest Surly I've had...maybe that's why the brewer was bitter?

Wife just texted me from Costco, they have Chimay Blue - Grand Reserve for $9.69 in 750mL bottles. Pretty good price I believe, and for anyone interested in cellaring or getting into cellaring this is supposed to be a great candidate. I have several bottles aging currently but have not tried one aged yet.

Nice to see Boulevard hitting MA. You will enjoy everything they make.
Sixth Glass is one of my favorites. They also make a version aged on Cherries, Bourbon and Oak that is amazing.
Try Tank 7 Saison if you get a chance!

I love this thread. I just cannot get enough. Great craft beer and a great smoke...Doesn't get any better than that. Except a great Scotch and a great cigar...Decisions, decisions.
