My Belgian Stout I had in the primary fermenter for 1 year (yes I know...). Was boring after 1 month, then forgot about it, i finally kegged it and it tastes like apples and raisins and other dark fruits, a little citrus, very sublte chocolate and roast. Very interesting. Some love it, some hate it. I'm on the fence about it. Just an experiment I did a year ago. Candi sugar, Belgian Strong Ale yeast, some belgian malts.

That actually sounds pretty awesome. I just entered a Belgian Christmas ale in this year's NHC, am hopeful for good feedback. Basically it's what I call a "kitchen-sink" Trappist, so I'm not sure how it will fare. Like yours, some have loved it, some hated it. We'll see!

Every year is different. The 09 was the only one that was "sweet". The 2010 is drinking good. And from what I've had I would say four year is the max you would want to keep Dark Lord.

I had 09 6 months after it's release... instantly the best beer I had ever had. I wish I would have known last year that they were selling 09's too! Didn't find out til after I went through. My sister-in-law bought me a set of the sam adams glasses that have the etched ring at the bottom and are specially shaped to minimize heat transfer from your hand and increase your ability to smell the boquet of the beer. They are actually really nice glasses and I naturally had to have a couple boston lagers in them. I don't think the etched ring did anything, but they definitely concentrated the boquet on the nose. I enjoyed drinking out of them.

Last night I had an IPA and a blonde ale from Trader Joe's. Mission St I think was the brand on the label.

Not spectacular, but for about $1/bottle, I'll definitely buy the IPA again -- and the bottles work great for homebrew.

And my girlfriend liked the blonde ale.

How did you like the Ephraim landhoney? I had friends that spent a ridiculous amount of money to get growlers of that stuff. Haven't had any myself.

It was a very good IIPA, very well made and drinkable(dry finish, not super sweet), nice hop character, left a lingering hoppy/resiny in the mouth that was nice. The hop character was a nice blend of citrus/pine, didn't come overly strong one way or the other if that makes sense (not super piney and not super citrusy).

Wow. Obviously not enjoying any GI stuff is he, LOL

Greg*Koch, CEO and co-founder of Stone Brewing in California, is a man on a mission, a search for the authentic, no matter if it’s beer, food, or any other of life’s facets. *

“Mediocrity is dumbfounding to me,” Koch said. “One day, the thought of overly commoditized beer will be confusing for people. They’ll say ‘What? You actually drank that?’”

Stone hit the Twin Cities market in a big way this past week with a flurry of events and promotion around some of their decidedly non-mediocre beers including*Arrogant Bastard Ale, Stone Ruination IPA, and the bold Stone*Imperial Russian Stout. During a press event at the Happy Gnome I attended yesterday, Koch*spoke on a variety of craft beer and industry topics, including preemptively addressing the room full of media by noting “in answer to the question that’s inevitably out there…they sold out years ago.” I failed to ask Koch what WAS his favorite Goose Island beer. **

Founded in 1996 in San Diego, Stone is the 15th largest craft brewery in the country, with international designs that include opening a full-scale production brewery in a yet-to-be named European locale (it’s down to Berlin or Bruges, according to Koch). The brewery is one of the fastest growing in the country, expanding production from a relatively meager 400 barrels in its first year to more than 115,000 in 2010. Not surprisingly,*a “significant” amount of the brewery’s overall sales come from its home state, according to Koch. Yet with their rapid expansion, that number is presumably evening out with Minnesota marking the 34th state “to have the distinct honor and privilege of delighting” in Stone’s offerings,*a tongue-in-cheek nod to*the brewery’s*famous “you’re not worthy” attitude and slogan. Tack on its wildly popular Stone Brewing*World Bistro & Gardens, an oasis of a gastropub in a sea of chain restaurants that Koch said has helped make a significant economic impact in San Diego thanks to increased beer tourism (ahem, Surly!), and it’s easy to see how Stone has made some huge ripples in the beer industry pond.

“Craft beer is a thing of joy, adventure, and creativity. I’m very proud to be a part of what we do,” Koch said.

Last year, U.S. craft brewers saw volume and sales increases of 11 and 12 percent respectively compared to 2009, according to the Brewers Association. It’s a continuing upward trend for the segment, despite the overall U.S. beer market remaining flat. Yet, craft beer market share by volume*still hovers in the 5 percent range, with commodity brewers making up the vast majority. This doesn’t dissuade Koch, however, as he noted Oregon’s craft beer market share is nearly 30 percent, a potential window into what could be possible here in Minnesota.

“Places that do good business, do good business,” Koch said. “If a dozen breweries opened up here and the beer sucked, that would suck for all of us. If we operate on the artisanal side of the equation, the category will succeed. … As Sam (Calagione of Dogfish Head) likes to say, ‘together we are heavy.’”

Personally, I’m pretty pleased to see Stone here, as it saves me a trip to Hudson. Although,*I’m having a bit of trouble squaring Koch’s nearly fanatical stance against the likes of Anheuser Busch Inbev while he simultaneously uses ABI’s local Twin Cities*distributor to get his products to bars and retailers. Strange bedfellows, I suppose (and not sure what the alternatives might be, Stone is able to self-distribute in California). But with a deluge of out-state breweries flooding the local market recently (with more to come like Brooklyn), it remains to be seen if Minnesota beer drinkers will embrace these new offerings alongside their locally produced brethren, or be paralyzed by too much choice.

Arcadia Bourbon Barrel Aged Shipwreck Porter
Brooklyn Black Ops '11
Founders KBS '10
Founders KBS '11
Lexington Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale
De Struise Black Damnation II Mocha Bomb
Founders Breakfast Stout

We compared these blind. I was surprised we all thought Black Ops got overshadowed and we rated the Arcadia higher than it. The KBS was tops, with the '11 at #1 despite being a tad hot and the '10 #2 having significantly less coffee flavor.

How was the Black Ops?

I was surprised as we all felt (the four of us tasting) the Black Ops was overshadowed by the KBS and Arcadia Shipwreck. They were all good, but the Black Ops was definitely noticeably hotter than the others and was not as complex flavor-wise.

That said, it was still pretty darn tasty and I'm glad I have another bottle to try after it sits for a while.

Bell's Oberon. Great wheat ale, gonna be drinking a lot of this over the summer.

Three Floyds Gumballhead is still my favorite wheat ale though.

I still have yet to try the Oberon but did try the Oarsmen last night and it was quite tasty, its a light wheat beer but has a sour/tart finish. I liked it but I think it will be even better in the heat.

Good to hear this is decent. I have been debating buying a mini-keg of it from the local liquor store. They have it on sale for 17.99 IIRC.

I think it's the can that does it Tom. It is good beer and shouldn't sit to long. It's great right out of the gate and that's when you should drink it.

Just saw this, Dave. You think so? I have heard that beer doesn't really age well/at all in cans. If it's bottle (or can) conditioned, it should age, right? I recently tried to drink a 4-year old OB Gordon that was totally disgusting... all the hops had faded and the malts were strange so I know beer changes in cans.

Personally I just think it's awesome beer :)

I was agreeing that it was the can that could have made it tasty funky. It's good fresh and that when it should be enjoyed. I wouldn't suggest aging beer in cans.

Before the flak starts flying, let me start off by saying that I bought this beer just for the hell of it to try it. :D

With that said, I am currently drinking Walgreen's Big Flats. To be honest, it really isn't that bad! It ain't a craftbrew by any means, but it sure beats other cheap beers on the market for baseball watching beer!

Brew day...
Started with anchor steam, hanssens oude gueuze, homebrew black IPA, rochefort 8, Yeti, and finished with a KBS.

The homebrew may not be great, but the booze it took to make it was :D

Dood. You have no idea how much I miss the Duck Rabbit Baltic Porter. It used to be a staple in my fridge when I was in SC. Nothing else is quite the same. Good stuff. Sweetwater too. The 420 is a fantastic brew.

Is that Kate the Great? I am green with envy!

How was the Temptation? I just got a bottle in a trade and was debating whether to drink or set it back for a while.

Hope you enjoyed the Red Poppy, I really liked it.

I liked the Temptation, it was actually the last beer of the night, and forgot to get everyone's thoughts on the aged vs. "fresh". But I will say that it was plenty funky and sour still, and it has not become too sour for sure. Good complexity and definitely not over the hill.

Everyone liked this years Red Poppy better than last years, which is excellent.

That Portsmouth beer in the middle..........:xxx
