Got a care package today from a friend in Iowa. Drinking the Psuedo Sue right now. Even though it's listed as a pale ale, it's very much like Old Nations M43 NEIPA, with maybe less body. Very tropical aroma from the hops. :tu

Samuel Smith Organic Chocolate Stout. Had this in a bar last summer, now one at home tonight. Definitely a "dessert" beer, tastes like a Hershey bar in every bottle...though it paired surprisingly nice with an Upmann.

Thought it was going to be too sweet after the first sip, but it toned down. Still very much a dessert beer but worth picking up if you can find.

Just keep in mind, I'd consider this only for a dessert type beverage, too sweeet to drink more than one. :2

If only it wasn't an IPA. ;s :pu :r

I had 3 Mephistopheles (Avery Brewing) from Batch 5 (Dec 2009): 16.83% ABV.

I was hammered. :r

Unfortunately, Avery axed by favorite two of their brews (Mephistopheles and Czar) last year, so no more of those. I would like to try their Callipygian (an imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels with coffee, cocoa, cacao nibs and vanilla beans). It's over 17% as well.

You know Tom I hated IPA's too, until I tried M43. It's not your typical west coast, piney IPA. It's a New England style IPA (NEIPA) and very much tropical in flavor. I still can't drink one right after the other but I'm finding I can drink more APA/IPA that use the newer varieties of hops.

I'm open minded, especially if I go to a place that will give you a sample or sell you a little 2 Oz. glass for $1 or something. I'd give a NEIPA a shot if I see one at one of the pubs I hit. :tu

Speedway stout is one of my favorite all time beers. I remember when it was impossible to find on the east coast, I was out in SD about to meet up with the S HIT herfers and went to a bottle shop to find something to bring. I saw speedway stout and got so excited, picked up a bottle and brought it to the herf all proud. Peter took one look at me and goes "you know, we can get speedway stout any time we want." I didn't realize it was a SD brewery :r

Flying Dog Raging B*tch Begian Style IPA -- not usually an IPA fan, but this wasn't so bad. The grapefruit flavor I associate with a lot of the "hazy" IPAs is a turn off for me, and while the fruit flavor was there, it was more muted (and thus more palatable for my delicate taste buds).

The beer actually doesn't have any donuts in it!. It's got molasses, lactose, and coffee. The malt profile give it a nice chocolate quality. It reminds me of a chocolate donut dipped in black coffee. It is fantastic and I would highly recommend it if you can get your hands on it.

Haven’t had the 2019 BCBS yet. My supplier hasn’t brought me my case yet. Hopefully tomorrow.

Had one of the regulars last night, it was very tasty per usual. Haven't tried any of the variants yet and probably won't for a while as I only got on of each in an attempt to slow down the growth of the cellar, but I did find a few tasty looking 2017 variants that I'm hoping to crack soon and see how they're doing

Dave128
12-02-2019, 01:22 PM

I was surprised that the cherry got so highly rated this year, supposedly better than the coffee, so I grabbed one. I have singles from the last 6-7 years but I don't have the storage space to stock up on cases. I'm trying to be better about being more selective on what I cellar but I always end up buying more than I should

Had a few BCBS's last week The regular one was pretty solid for right out of the gate not over hot from the barrels like a fresh BA stout. The coffe was ok at first but opened up as it got warmer and was a solid beer. The cherry was kinda faint seemed like a regular BC just a tad sweeter. Got my hands on a bunch of the Rye so looking forward to trying that one. I was out of town so pretty much missed getting any around here.

My guess is production is up. I was at Total Wine last night and they had cases of the cherry and wheat wine. I picked up a single of the cherry so I didn't have to drink the one I picked up on black friday but it's not as exciting as if I had found a variant after release day three years ago, which would never have happened

icehog3

Makes sense, Ben....although my place had case upon case of the "regular", but none of the variants.

Oddly enough the regulars are harder to come by around here than the variants, I slightly overpaid for them on black friday because I didn't want to have to hunt them down but I've only seen a few places with them on the shelves since then. I think my idea on production increases came when I saw so many places selling the three year vertical 17-19, I wonder how many bottles they produced in 17 and 18 if they could sell so many of them in 19 (for a steep markup of course) and how many are being made now

icehog3
12-17-2019, 01:43 PM
Went into my corner place today, and they have all the variants. Coffee for $21, cherry for $25, some other one for $22. I passed.

Ben, either one of those first two worth that price of admission?

stearns
12-17-2019, 01:51 PM
From what I heard the cherry is actually supposed to be really good, I'll report back when I try it. Also heard the coffee was good not great, I picked up a single but I don't know when I'll get around to trying it. The only one I would run to buy more of is the reserve rye (red box), I love rye stouts and I bet they did it well. Everything is worth whatever the buyer will pay for them and I'm sure these will all sell out at some point soon, but with KBS being a year-round production and things like World Wide Stout being easily available in many forms I don't need to be spending $20+ on single bottles of BCBS for daily drinking

icehog3
12-17-2019, 01:55 PM
Thanks, Ben. They actually have several cases of each variant, and at that price I may have a while to decide if I wanna try one. :D

Those prices are actually pretty fair, unless the other is the wheat wine (yellow label) which I believe was cheaper than the rest, but also is supposed to be fairly sweet

Thanks Ben, that's what I was wondering. If you report back that the cherry or rye is good and they still have some, I may bite.

That sounds interesting Clay.

I had a few Founders beers over the last couple of days. The new Frangelic Mountain is sublime. It's a imperial brown ale, with coffee. Might have to pick up another 4 pack.

Also had some CBS. Used part of a bottle to make CBS syrup to add to eggnog. Of course couldn't let the remainder go to waste. The CBS syrup was a big hit at my friends house. I bet it would be good over ice cream.

I've had the underground brown but haven't been able to find the frangelic yet, had it at a tasting around 2011 when they first made it and absolutely loved it, hoping they still have some of that magic in these new bottles.

And yes, CBS syrup on ice cream please :D

Opened a bottle of Gueuze Tilquin à l’ancienne from their 2014-2015 bottling last night. Pretty sour and very funky. Had a beautiful mushroom earthiness to it. Light baryard and a slight leather on the finish. Very dry and highly carbonated. Glad I have a few more from that season in the cellar.

Anyone else dig on sour beers? I know they don't pair too well a cigar, but they are damn delicious

My local farm brewery always has a couple. They're wonderful beers but they do sell less than anything else on the menu. Luckily the owner/brewer loves them so he always has two or three on tap. IMO they do go better on a hot day than any other time. They make the mouth sparkle as if they were much colder than they are.

Hit up a couple VA breweries the past few days before heading back to CO, the cherry on top was Adroit Theory out in the middle of nowhere, only been once before and was very happy to return. Too many to list, but had about a dozen tasters of some of the finest dark liquids around. I don't think their BA stuff is really next level yet, but their regular dark stuff and the endless variants were quite fun to enjoy before heading to the airport. Also refreshing to see another brewery with the majority of the menu being 10+% :al

After seeing so many crossovers between whiskey and beer, this one sounds pretty interesting and relatively unique, love the attention they're giving to the history. This is going to be the first release Weldwerks is allowing proxy pickup so I think there's a good chance I won't be able to buy any (you purchase tickets ahead of time then pick up at the brewery) but still a cool idea, I'll give it a try

DOUBLE BARREL 1910 MEDIANOCHE
When Old Forester® released their 1910 bourbon in late 2018, we quickly fell in love and it has become one of our favorites. After we managed to secure a few of the casks used to produce 1910, we knew we wanted to incorporate the same double barrel technique Old Forester uses to produce their unique bourbon. The journey began by aging Medianoche in four freshly emptied 6-11 year-old Kentucky bourbon barrels for 12 months, which feature a heavy toast and light char, identical to the initial casks used for 1910. Then we racked each Medianoche bourbon barrel into a freshly emptied Old Forester 1910 barrel, which are heavily charred and lightly toasted casks used to finish mature Old Forester bourbon for six to nine months. Mirroring their process, this batch of Medianoche was finished in the 1910 barrels for nine months, resulting in over 21 months of barrel aging between the two casks.

13.5% ABV. Available in 22 oz bottles to-go for $28 each, with a limit of 2 bottles per person.

The other one they're releasing at the same time sounds pretty interesting as well:

VANILLA DESTINATIONS
As shamelessly huge fans of the folks at Bottle Logic and the amazing beers they produce, we knew we had to get a collaboration on the books when they made the trek to Greeley for the inaugural WeldWerks Invitational Festival back in June of 2018. So we decided to brew a massive Imperial Stout, combining techniques and favorite malts from both breweries, and laid it to rest in freshly emptied 8-12 year Heaven Hill bourbon barrels for 18 months. After barrel aging, we conditioned the beer on a blend of Ugandan and Fiji vanilla beans for several weeks, then finished the beer with freshly roasted Belize cacao nibs from Cultura Craft Chocolate in Denver.

13.1% ABV. Available in 22 oz bottles to-go for $32 each, with a limit of 4 bottles per person.

Gonna be an expensive day

Opposite ends of the spectrum this past weekend:

Pliny The Younger
Crooked Stave Gift Of Time - Stout Month

This Gift Of Time release was a blend of stouts aged for 44, 45, and 46 months in heaven hill barrels. This is their third release and the best so far, first two were 24 and 36 months. I believe they partnered with Evil Twin to make the original juice, Evil Twin also collabed for their anniversary stout last year which was thick as oil and delicious as well. They're known country wide for their sours, but I think their stouts are the real jewel. Most if not all don't make it out of the taproom

2020 Barrel Aged Double Averice - aged in Knob Creek barrels

2019 version was 19+%, this year's was a much more approachable 17.4%. I had a hard time drinking more than a few ounces of the 19 stuff, but this one has a perfect amount of heat
