Once again I was the last caller on McAllister's Hot Stove Show. I think it might have been actually Mark Amazon. I discussed Oswalt's WAR vs. Bailey's WAR and the price for each. Oswalt's WAR has gone down each year, while Bailey's WAR has improved each year (although by not much), but if I'm gonna spend 10-16 million, I want a big name player, not another broken down maybe pitcher. We've already got enough maybe's and has-beens. I'm mad enough at keeping Rolen at third, a has been as back-up/maybe starting SS out of Valdez, and Arroyo. Why add Oswalt?

BTW, I was supposedly ED from NC. The last caller, if you want to go back and listen. I waited so long, he finally answered my call when I was taking a p!$$ and was caught off guard. :r:r

LOL. "Hey, can you hold on, I am seeing a man about a horse" :r

I don't like it. I like Hamels, but can they sign him long term? Who will play 2nd base? They can't be as good at defense as Phillips and Hamels only helps out every 5 days.

Good trade, considering the Reds biggest hole is pitching. They have a bunch of #3-5 starters and one true starter. They can score runs, and keeping Phillips when this contract expires, is a big question once Votto leaves. Phillips Gold Gloves are well deserved, but last year was a product of home score keeping and having one the year before. :2

We've got a good cast of not ready guys, but nothing that will provide Phillips style defense and offense.

I have seen multiple plays at GABP where he should have gotten errors, not saying he should have 20 more, but at least 5 balls that he got a pass on. One he booted it, and then threw it in the dirt past Votto and no error. :hm :2

Come on, take off the glasses. He makes a lot of good plays, but he doesn't make a lot of plays that other 2B's can't. Its like saying that Stubbs gets to more fly balls than other CF's. You need to stop listening to the Reds home broadcast team. ;)

He is a good 2B, and he will probably stay in Cincinnati. The problem is, this is the year they have to win, because Votto is gone either thru free agency or a trade. Hopefully they get a trade and get some value for him. Same with Phillips, if they can't resign him, they better trade him for something. Maybe this trade talk is an indication that Phillips doesn't want to stay. :hm

Cincinnati is a small market team, they can't come up with the scratch that almost any other team in the MLB can. If they buy one big player it forces them to play lesser quality prospects (Stubbs, Bailey) or get over the hill players (Renteria, Rolen). Their farm system seems to be good, but they management has no patience to allow players to develop. They rush everyone to the Big Show and try and develop them on the fly. :bh

'Great' and Reds pitching do not go in the same sentence, Cordero was a decent closer, Marshall won't be much better, if at all.

Chapman can't pitch on the reg, and once he gets a few days in a row, he falls apart. The league seemed to have figured out that he doesn't throw many strikes and the 3rd day in a row he is worthless. His best shot is back in the rotation like he was in Cuba, but a high pitch count and as the season wears on, I think he will become even worse. Afraid to say it, but he is showing signs that his arm is already worn out. :td

Did not see that one coming, especially for such a light number. Free-agency would have gotten him at least $25M more. Brandon Phillips is all but gone now. Nolan Ryan threw pretty hard and pitched 24 years!

He also played in the era before performance enhancing drugs and year-round trainning, those take a larger toll on these pitchers bodies as they train. Ryan also had the ability to do something other than throw the ball 100 mph to get guys out. There will never be another like the Ryan Express, these guys aren't built like they used to be. They are so coddled and watched, scientific break downs, bigger faster stronger emphasis. Its just a different age of baseball, with more injuries and less seasons. :2

Cozart sure did look great! :tu

Latos just couldn't get his breaking ball working tonight. He kept coming up short on the pitch so they weren't even swinging at it.

To be fair, Meseraco kept calling for breaking balls, even though Latos couldn't get 'em over the plate in the 5th inning. Not sure if that is Meseraco's call or someone in the dugout. Either way, Latos doesn't shake off pitch calls very much.

Stubbs is just not a good baseball player, his 'defense' doesn't even come close to making up for his more than 1K per game and less than 1 time getting to 1st base in a game. He couldn't hit in the minors, and still struck out, but they decide to throw him in the big show anyways. :bh

It makes you wonder how Chapman is going to fair over the course of the season when they couldn't use him a 3rd day in a row. :sh

But when people call for him to be a closer, he would have to pitch multiple days in a row. A lot of set-up men can pitch an inning, 3 days in a row. People want him to be a starter, but he can't last 100 pitches and needs a full 5 days rest. :sh

Neither can Bailey and Latos at this point. I'd take Chappy over either of them.
Latos can't make it past the fifth in his first two starts. Bailey just sucks. Chapman has been great so far, it's time to stretch him back out and put him as the fourth starter in the rotation.
Cueto, Arroyo, Chapman, Leake, and Latos. I could live with that order for our rotation.

BC has signed both Votto and Phillips longterm and is wondering why fans won't put asses in seats. Maybe if he put Chapman in the rotation, then he would sell more tickets. Remember Chapman sold out when he made his debut, and attendance was pretty high when he made his '11 debut. People will pay money to see a guy pitch between 96-106. Look in Washington, Strassburg has sold plenty of seats for their organization. Win or lose, if BC wants attendance up, put Chappy in the rotation.

Chapman in the rotation only works if he is pitching well. The problem I forsee is, when he gets a little worn down or later in the games when he starts getting tagged. No one comes to watch Homer Bailey, who is barely a decent AAA pitcher, and he was 'the next big thing' coming thru the organization at one point in time. :2

Up until the last few seasons, Cubs fans out numbered Reds fans at home. Kind of like Steelers fans in Paul Brown Stadium. A lot of people called it Wrigley South because of the sheer number of Cubs fans there. Its a good marketing ploy, and if the Reds were as bad as a few years ago, no one would likely make a stink about it.

Stubbs is the least of this team's worries right now. Harris is crap and needs to be DFA'd or released, Rolen is terrible at the plate, Frazier needs to get starts at third, and Dusty needs to learn how to make a fu@K!ng lineup. Yesterday's lineup was terrible. I could see it if they hadn't had any off days, but an off day, a rainout, and then sitting the left side of the infield after one game was friggin' ridonkulous! I hear Dusty's on a short leash right now. It's high time for him to go.

I've never been a big Dusty hater, but yesterday's lineup just p!ssed me off to no end. We give the mediocre big name guy extensions, while Showalter and Johnson show the rest of the league how a manager should really manage a game. It's high time for us to get a manager who isn't laid back. Time to fire this team up and get us winning consistently.

It's high time for him to go. .

Don't bring baseball discussion into this thread, Dan and Hugh are on a roll. ;)

I agree, yesterdays lineup was crap, he got bailed out when he put in the regulars and the Cubs blew the 9th inning with errors. I tried to interject that, but Dan saw the final score and was more than happy with Dusty's 'managing' of the game

A guy on the Reds forum over at Cincy.com said that this was Dusty's master plan. Starters couldn't hit Dempster, so he saved them until late in the game against relievers and Marmol. I'm 99% sure the post was being sarcastic, but even so, I just don't think Dusty's that smart.:D Not even Nostradamus could've predicted that Marmol would've walked that many guys in the 9th.

Not at all, he threw that lineup out there like it was get-away-day after a 10 game road trip, rather than the second game in a row after a day off. You can't tell me the guys weren't rested enough to play 9 innings. He got bailed out and in the box score looks like he knew what he was doing. :bh

I've never been a Dusty hater (and yet I've never been his biggest fan either), but yesterday royally p!ssed me off! I'm taking a day or two to get over it, but right now, I'd say it's time for Dusty to go to the house or the booth at ESPN on a permanent basis. We won yesterday despite him and his stupid lineup. I hope in a day or two I settle down, but right now I've become a Dusty hater. That was absolutely inexcusable, regardless of the win. I know Dusty plays hunches, but if I put that kind of lineup card up on my 9th grade team after that many off days, I'm sure the Varsity coach would have told me to go the Hell home and never come back.

If a guy isn't hitting well, you don't put him out there expecting that he's due for a hit. He's probably not going to hit. You put the guys out there who are hot at that moment. I don't mind changing the lineup because guys are hot, but you don't put your worst hitter in the two hole simply because you think he is due.

Willie Harris is absolutely worthless, and couldn't hit in a low A ball game, and probably not in a high school game. .098 average and he's in the two hole? F*** Dusty and HARRIS! Stubbs is an All-Star compared to this guy. And we all thought Patterson/Taveras/Renteria was bad...

Dan and Hugh, we get your point about Stubbs. Now let's get some hate on the true reasons we're not winning:
Dusty
Harris
Rolen's offense
No true leadoff or cleanup hitter
Left Field situation

Like I said in my PM to you, I know it's sarcasm, but we've got to focus on the worst aspects of this team right now.

Stubbs is a Greek God compared to Harris at the plate.
Dusty needs to go, and now if we're going to even have a slight chance at the playoffs. No one in the minors to bring up right now b/c we sold them in the offseason and Janish has been on fire, but he suffered from a broken wrist. We need a skipper who can motivate guys to hit and/or bring a new approach to our offense. Laid back Dusty isn't going to change anything.

Never, ever sign and bring into your baseball organization a pitcher named "Homer". You are tempting the gods of suckitudity more than they can possibly resist.

I mean really, would you sign a shortstop that happened to be named "Dropsy" or a power hitter called "Whiff"?

Baker is handcuffed by his roster. Lots of guys in the lineup everyday could be sat down on different occasions. Rolen is not playing well at all, but the same can be said for a lot of different players at different points in the season. The problem is not having great options. Heck, look at LF, they have no answer there.

It was nice to see Votto save the day yesterday after Greinke completely shut them down. This team is worrisome, as it seems they can't ever get everything to line up at the same time. It will be interesting going forward to see how they progress against this weak division. :hm
