As good as the Cards are right now, they can't keep up this pace with all the rookie arms. Still, we can't beat winning teams, so it doesn't look like we will be winning the big one this year either. Another first round loss if the club doesn't make any changes.

It's not just the no hitters. He shows the qualities of an ace a lot of times, then he'll "pull a Homer" for a while. Flashes of brilliance and maturity, then an outing that makes us wonder.

A lot of the times? He is mediocre most of the times I watch. Hell, he is 5-8 this year and has the highest ERA on the team. Flashes of brilliance make up about 1 in 10 starts, not even close to +50% of his starts. His defense behind him would make a lot of pitching look good.

I really can't believe it. The team got better on paper this off-season, but the product on the field just looks terrible sometimes. The Cardinals just came in and kicked their ass 2 out of 3. The Reds have absolutely no leadership or fire, no one looks like they give a crap. Maybe behind closed doors its different, but on the field or in the dugout everyone just looks like they give up when something bad happens. Between guys like Phillips showboating normal plays and complaining about his $75M contract, to Dusty not ever having a solution or even a thought of a solution, to Votto being the face of the franchise and never speaking up, this team just looks disjointed and distant from each other.

Reds have won five in a row. Against not-so-hot teams, but still...
Best thing I saw was Broxton's ninth inning close against the Cubs a couple days ago. He was having great success with a pitch I'd call a 'high in the strike zone' fastball. Batters would either whiff on it or make very poor contact.

I just hope we Aren't getting hot too early. I'd hope they'd hit a hot streak that will carry them through the playoffs, but they start it now and could peak too soon.
Fingers crossed.

Very disappointing play the last two games in StLouis. People like to blame Dusty, but really, if a team can't get motivated to play well in a series like this.......there really is nothing that needs to be said by the manager, they know they have to TCOB, but they play like it doesn't matter. Winning at the right time is definitely giving them a shot at the division. Their momentum certainly didn't help them tonight against the Cubs, of all teams. The Cards have had a bad stretch, as have the Dodgers (who happen to be 11 games up). Hopefully they peak at the right time, and avoid the 1 game playoff. This team seems to be all or nothing, so a 1 gamer doesn't have me overly confident. :2

Did you watch the games this last week or last night? No emotion, no leadership, someone on 700 WLW, who was in the locker room at the final series said that you couldn't even tell whether they won or lost after the games. Cueto drops the ball on the mound and then gives up a homerun, Phillips botches a double play ball, Votto can't scoop a hard grounder, no emotion after any of them. Just a few examples from last night.

Sorry about the game last night, guys.
I don't think your boys played with a whole lot of confidence, but my guess is that they really weren't prepared for what they found in Burgh when they got there.
Between the crowd and Liriano being dialed in, that had to be one huge distraction to overcome.
I really didn't expect to see the boots and the error from Cinnci. I can't explain them except for nerves. If the guys haven't had a lot of cohesiveness in the clubhouse, and were all out there as single players, there'd be lots of nerves.
I feel bad for the fans, you guys have a rightful gripe, for sure.

I agree with the stud. I know Votto left a man on 2nd at least twice; couldn't even hit a long fly to advance him. Cueto got rattled early. If Rolen were still around, he would have kicked ass in the clubhouse. They have NO on field leadership....... NONE.....the last 7 games were a strong testament to that. They need some big changes in that clubhouse.
Starscream
10-02-2013, 08:15 PM
Votto saying that getting on base is more important than driving runs in is a big part of the problem. That's two hole hitter mentality, not $200 million mentality.
Cueto smiling in the dugout last night after he was pulled is another part of the problem.
Dusty not getting his team pumped up, no sense of urgency is another part of the problem.
Complacency in the clubhouse and nomchalant attitudes from everyone but Phillips and Frazier is the biggest problem. They just don't care, so why should we? Ticket sales will drop next year if the complacent attitude from this team continues.

His mentality, coupled with a 0-4 in the only game that mattered, speaks volumes about how drastically over-paid he was this season. At first, I thought that Votto was a bargain at $200+ million, now it appears as if it is a giant waste of money. When was the last time a $200 million player actually lived up to the contract though? :sh

No, but he has to be partially to blame for having the most talented roster in the NL Central, failing to win the division or even hosting the wild card game, and fizzling at the end of the season every year they made the playoffs. The "Players coach" moniker can only get you so far. :hm
Apparently, Jim Tracy now resides in Cincinnati, and Tony LaRussa is still available as well. Luring Girardi away from the Yankees will be an impossible task, with the Cubs likely to offer him whatever he wants, and I think he still ends up back in pinstripes. As much as I would like to see how Barry could do as a manager, and how much hype/excitement it would bring to the Reds, I feel like hype is where it would end. :2

A reporter should ask Reds owner Bob Castellini if there is "a sense of urgency" to find a new manager. :D
(Sorry, non-locals, that quote about urgency is from a question Dusty Baker replied to going into the final week or so of the season. It appears Baker's answer didn't help his chances of staying employed.)
Anyhow, I vote for Tony Perez, the Reds only kept him around for 44 games after they hired him as manager last time. Not nice, and the front office never gave any sort of understandable reason. Yeah, I like to hold a grudge every so often..:tu

A "reliable workhorse", with a career .500 record and 4.25 ERA. If he doesn't get much better in a short period of time, its going to be $18.5M a year of wasted money. And that's assuming his elbow issues don't come back. He got paid more for two no-hitters than his entire body of work :2 :sh

We won a series! Other than Bailey, our rotation has been great, and the offense is starting to come around. We may get out of the gutter soon.

Well, last night wasn't a very good one for the Redlegs.

Last night was rough. Offense has come around, but the bullpen is killing us.

Pitching a complete game is the only way to be sure your bullpen won't blow the win...:D
Reds have moved up some in the standings...or you could look at it as one or two of the division's perennial cellar dwellers are on their way down as usual.

We look a lot better than we did a few weeks ago, but we'll be lucky to see this team make even a wildcard spot. Lots of good things going for this team right now, but a lot of crap to balance it back out to make a mediocre ballclub.

I know it's still early, but it looks like Atlanta is gonna be a threat this year to go deep in the playoffs.

Yeah, they are pretty darn good. Hopefully we can beat the Cubbies again.

3 in a row!
Ironic that this could be said twice in the same week, with the meaning being 180 degrees different the second time. Ugh!
