It was nice to see Votto save the day yesterday after Greinke completely shut them down. This team is worrisome, as it seems they can't ever get everything to line up at the same time. It will be interesting going forward to see how they progress against this weak division. :hm

Yeah, Votto saved the day. I agree it will be interesting. I think we will do ok. We have been winning with Turd Rolen in the lineup pretty much every day batting a buck something. Like someone said the other day, good teams just find a way to win.

Did you ever wonder how a pitcher can throw a ball that can almost magically drop sharply before reaching the plate? This ordinary phenomenon is called a curve ball, and the explanation of this occurance can be described with a few basic lessons in fluid flow dynamics.

What you have to remember in this problem is that air is a fluid, and that things moving through air behave much like those passing through water, only on a less noticeable scale. An observable phenomenon known as the Venturi Effect tells us that a fluid flowing at a higher velocity has a lower pressure than that same material at a lower velocity, all other variables kept constant. To observe this, suspend two tennis balls from equal lenth strings about 5 cm apart. Blow a hairdyer though the gap between them and they will actually be drawn together because atmospheric pressure will try to fill the low pressure void and will in the process push the balls together. So high velocity means low pressure.

Back to the ball. The pitcher throws the ball with plenty of topspin (or, to make it curve left or right, sidespin). The spin of the ball magnifies the velocity of the air passing below the ball and lessens the velocity of the passing air above the ball. Higher velocity below and lower velocity above means low pressure on bottom and high pressure on top. The high pressure takes advantage of the low pressure and forces the ball to travel downwards.

And Marshall couldn't hit the zone with a 2-seamer yesterday, but his offspeed pitches were thrown for strikes more times than not. Nothing against Marshall, but it was a bad day to have a bad day. Still, we won the game and the series. Now off to face the Expos again, who are winning more games than we are. Let's hope for the best.

The offense is slowly waking up. We could still be a player this year, but we've still got a long ways to go to be playoff worthy. One more decent bat in the lineup via trade and we could get it done. The question is, what would we have to give up for that bat? We have nothing in the minors worth crap this year.

Defensively, they have certainly made assertions comparable to blatantly saying that he is the best defensive outfielder in baseball. Luckily the past two seasons they have backed off the Rickey comparisons as the best leadoff hitter in baseball, because clearly the guy cannot get on base. His below .300 OBP and Dusty still has him an 1 or 2? :td

At this rate, if the Reds miss the playoffs, there can't be much blame on anyone but Dusty. The division will likely come down to a few games and Dusty has already given away at least 5 with the lineup cards he turns in some days, or the inability to monitor his pitchers effectively. :bh

Stubbs got 2 walks last night, which is amazing, considering he watches good pitches and swings at terrible ones. He stood there and watched pitches and Burnett still couldn't hit the strike-zone. :sh

How about some more crap with Chapman and his wife being tied up in a hotel room? He is pitching lights out, but all this off-the-field stuff has to become a distraction at some point. :2

How about some more crap with Chapman and his wife being tied up in a hotel room? He is pitching lights out, but all this off-the-field stuff has to become a distraction at some point. :2

It isn't Chapman's fault with the hotel room stuff. His girlfriend is too dumb and didn't check with the front desk to see if a maintenance man was really trying to work on the room.

Turns out she may be engaged to another man and was found less than fully clothed in the room. This certainly sounds like a weird situation, but athletes on the road have laundry lists of girls, but I think she just got taken off his list.

I guess you didn't watch the game. Orel Herschiser (spelling?) even said that he is usually on the side of the pitcher, but the hitters were getting hosed. On Ludwick's "strikes" they were well below the bottom of the strike zone. Francona said, "Well the strike zone bottom is the hollow of the knees, but those were at the shins"

That could be partly due to the fact that sometimes the folks televising the game don't show the pitch tracker when it makes the ump look bad. That's a trend I've noticed over the last couple years, makes me wonder if MLB doesn't put some pressure on the broadcasters.

Of course Chapman just didn't have it last night, no disputing that.

You didn't see any of Ludwick's at bats last night? He's usually a guy who will go down and make contact with low pitches out of the zone, but after he called out Hernandez's poor calling during his first at bat, Hernandez called pitches at Ludwick's ankles for strikes. To be fair, Hernandez was consistant at it though and had a low strike zone all night. I also thought the interference call on Mez wasn't legit either. It wasn't the umpires that blew the game last night, it was the bullpen. But Hernandez still made my blood pressure rise last night.

Consistent, even when it was consistently bad. There has been a lot of bad umpiring this season and maybe last night was not exception, but the Reds still lost it without the umpire intervention. You can't get on an umps bad side. It never ends well. :2

Chapman still had the 3 run lead before he gave up 4, 2 of them were his own. I was surprised at how poorly he pitched, barely threw strikes last night. Hope he hasn't lost his control (again), because patient batter will be drawing a lot of walks if he pitches like that. :td

Glad to see the Tigs win a series against an above .500 team. FWIW, I think those pitch trackers are worthless. They're way off. It seems that they show the mark on the box as to where the ball is when it impacts the catcher's glove. The plate is long from front to back. The ball only has to graze that 3-D box.

I'm not making excuses for bad calls. I agree Angel blew some. I'm not a fan of his. I think Adam's right about consistency though. As long as it's the same for both sides the players should be able to adjust.

LoL, you cant win them all as the Reds are soooo good at showing us, they had the spotlight and everyone talking about how amazing their bullpen is and then the bullpen decided to implode on itself. It almost seemed like Chapman had such a high confidence level and then gave up the run to end his streak and is completely shaken. He just is not pitching the same that he had been to start the season. You can't complain about an ump when the ump is making the same calls for both sides. I LOVE the Reds, but they just blew it and there is no one to blame but themselves, the bullpen absolutely poo'ed the bed with a 3 run lead.

We went on a 6 game streak last time you were a fan, so maybe we'll have another winning streak!
Sweep!

C'mon Reds!

Latos said the Indians were stealing signs last night. Good for Cleveland. It's a wonder with our average w/ RISP why we don't do the same.

When your ERA is over 5.0, you don't have the luxury of crying foul. Thats like Stubbs claiming that the pitchers are greasing the ball when he strikes out. :td

Quote of the night was from an unnamed Indians hitter:

Finally, an unnamed Indians hitter said this:

“Tell him you don’t have to steal signs when you’re tipping pitches.”

Talking smack to Latos. I love it! Some bad blood between Lowe and Dusty, now this. Maybe some action will go down at the park tonight.

Dominate closer work by Chapman today. Hope his arm isn't getting tired being the everyday closer. Oh wait, he splits those duties. :hm

What is your source on this or is this just speculation? It sounds feasible, but I haven't heard anything from Fay or any of the other Reds media coverage.

An excuse after he gives up the homerun.

Last 6 appearances, given up runs in 4 of them, 3 losses and 2 blown saves. He still hasn't proved he can handle anything more than spot duty without getting worn down.

I read it correctly, no confusion here. He didn't bother to give the excuse until after he blew the game ;)

Chapman blows the game.

then

'Dusty said in pregame that his back was bothering him.'

If he doesn't give up the homerun, the twitter likely never happens. :2

Studly, your record continues to skip. It sure is getting awful tiresome to hear your constant piling on in this thread. This thread is for Reds fans- which you aren't. So please do us fans a favor and maybe start a Reds haters thread where you can post your bombast all the time and those of us that support the Reds don't have to read it. Sorry, but it sure is getting old to deal with your pablum everytime the Reds lose, and your deafening silence when they win.:2

Thank you for telling me where my loyalties lie. Not a Reds hater by any means, just far from a homer. Sorry I can't only stop by when they win to post. I post when they win, I post when they lose. Apparently nothing negative shall ever be posted in this thread. Unfortunately, without Andrew and I, there wouldn't be much of a sports discussion in this thread. I am a sports fan first, I am a realist, I call it like I see it, without the blind faith of claiming everything Reds related is gold. ;s

You're not the only one! Go on a nice winning streak then- BAM- losing streak. Sweep the Indians- BAM- they sweep you. It is frustrating for certain! Hopefully then can get back on the right track vs the Twinkees!

Latos pitches like the pitcher they traded away their entire farm system for, albeit against one of the worst hitting teams in the league. He did look good tonight though, and its a good thing Dusty didn't pick up the phone to call in his closer tonight and let him finish it out. :tu

A needed victory, but Larry is right; the planets were misaligned and that had Brewer bats swing a few inches off thus causing them to miss the ball many times. Perhaps, Larry, the recent solar flares will re-align the pattern and the Reds will resume losing. It's freakin' cosmic!

+1. I wish the solar flares would quit acting up so that Cozart could actually get a hit and not strike out. Also, maybe the whole team would hit better if it weren't for the misalignment of the planets.

I think I'd tell my batters not to swing at any pitch Chapman throws. He might just walk the ballpark until he realizes what's happening and throw some balls down the middle of the plate. Good victory, but Chapman does not inspire confidence at this point.
