This is the best team they have had in years and they are still squallering in mediocrity. The schedule is eating them alive right now, they can't beat a winning team and don't even look good against mediocre/bad teams. :td
Ironically enough, the homers on FSN-OH said that the Yankees series was a potential World Series preview. That made me literally laugh out loud at my television. Its statements like that that remind me why I don't care for local broadcasts on a regular basis.

I drive 1hr each way, I have to cut through the heart of Tampa and traffic is not the issue people complain about, our economy is horrible 18% unemployment, our governor is taking more money from middle class and public servants are being charged more for benefits and 3% of salary taken away.
All that said, the Rays should move. I will not argue. As a season ticket holder and loyal fan they should move. They deserve better. Give me one place where they can go? Then figure out where the other 8 teams with worse attendance can move to? Times are tough all over.

Not likely, that ball was in "no mans land". Really the SS going back for that ball has the worst chance of getting it. You always want the player coming in to make the catch. :2

We need changes if we're gonna make it. SF is shopping around for a catcher. Hernandez is a big offensive force this year, but I'd love to see him traded for a pitcher with a decent arm. Left field is finally coming around. And we need to upgrade at Short Stop. Renteria needs to go, and Cozart replace him. Then, we may be a playoff caliber team.

How would you upgrade this team at this moment? No right or wrong answer, b/c you don't work in the front office. Same goes for all of us.
Adam, how would you upgrade this team?
Hugh, how would you upgrade this team?
Waffle, how would you upgrade this team?
We are obviously not gonna make the WS this year, but making the playoffs is a decent possibility at this point, despite being in 4th place right now. It's still before the All-Star break, so there's plenty of time. We're only 3 games back.
No wrong or right answer for anyone, but please be realistic. Don't come out and say let's get Pujols, Holiday, Lincecum, Wilson, Rivera, and the likes that we have absolutely NO chance of acquiring at this point. I know SF needs a catcher, but we're not gonna get Lincecum, Wilson, or any other big name from their team in return for Hernandez right now. He's awesome at offense this year, but he's old and starting to decline, especially at defense. Hanigan is obviously the better game caller and defender.

We could get a decent pitcher or starting position if we trade Hernandez, Alonso, maybe Stubbs, and someone else in a deal, but I'm not counting on it.
The fact is, SF is shopping for a good catcher with Posey out for the season. Ramon is only under contract for the rest of this year. Posey will be back next year, so it's only fitting if we in fact do trade a catcher for someone of worth, that it will be Hernandez. Hanigan's under contract past this year, and besides, I'd hate to give up his defense and game calling skills.

06-29-2011, 06:38 PM
They need a starting pitcher or two. The talk was of Liriano, but I am not sure who they have on the market right now. If the Giants are in the discussion at trade time, you need to make an effort to get Cain or, at minimum, Vogelsong. Renteria and Hernandez work well in the trade with 2 or Sigle/Double-A prospects. It shouldn't take much to get a decent starting pitcher from the Giants in exchange for a few players with a servicable catcher.
I am interested to see if Willis can continue being a viable pitcher in Louisville, it would be nice to see him take another run at the big show. He was some kind of dominant for the Marlins and if he can return to form, he would be a very good 4 or 5 starter. :hm
The Reds need to make a serious run at Reyes if he is available. Stubbs has to be included in that package and you can afford to run Janish with him as well. At this point, Janish has done little to convince me that he is more than a servicable day off for infielders. The argument against is obviously being able to afford him and Phillips in the years to come. He may not stay regardless, but they may both like the idea of having the best middle infield in baseball and batting 1-2 in the order in front of Votto. You have to believe that if this team isn't going to make the playoffs consistently, not talking 3 times in 7 years, but every year for a few years: Votto is gone and Phillips is gone. They are both the top 5 in their position in MLB and don't want to squander good baseball on a bad team. Might they stay for less money, yes, but not 20 million less. :tu

There really isn't too much we can do. I'm not down on Stubbs like the rest of you. A nice speed/power combo. So, he strikes out a lot. A .250 hitter with 20/20 or 30/30 potential is ok in my book. He could be a good leadoff hitter if he did improve his strike zone awareness. He IS young, so I don't give up on him yet by any stretch. Reyes would indeed be great, but I doubt we'll get him at this point. I think that Henley is being shopped, but if he would change his attitude with a change of scenery is anybody's guess.
If our pitching stays strong, if our hitting remains decent, we could go far indeed. Volquez looked very good today. Cueto is hot, Arroyo can be very good, and the sticky fingers guy is also pitching well.
So- big IF- we play close to our ability we should/could go quite far even w/o changing much if anything.

Reyes leads the NL in average, hits, triples and runs, 2nd in stolen bases, 5th in OBP, 6th in OPS, 4th in doubles, 7th in slugging. He ranks in the top ten in nearly every category besides HR. The defending NL MVP isn't even in the top ten in 5 categories, let alone 9. :tu
He is a lead off hitter and has struck out only 26 times in 76 games, compare that to the Reds lead off hitter who has 111 strikeouts. It would be nice to upgrade twice with one player, leadoff and SS would get gigantic boosts. Plus the chance to unload an underachieving, overhyped, bad defending CF for an All-Star would be beneficial to Dusty. For some reason, albeit unjustified, Stubbs has to play every day. :hm

I like your way of thinking, Hugh. But who is Henley?
:hm
I'd love to have Reyes, Adam, but at this point, I don't think it's a possibility anymore.

If anyone has noticed, Volquez looks good when Hanigan is behind the plate. When Hernandez is behind the plate, Volquez sucks. I still say Volquez sucks, but it seems that Hanigan is the one who keeps our guys decent. He's got the lower ERA in games vs. Hernandez.

hanley Ramirez? He put up Stubbs numbers last year, yet he had a much better average, but he's virtually worthless this year. That's why GOOD OL' DAVEY benched him. You gotta love DAVEY. They say he is fed up with Fla. He has a world of talent, but the question is if he can harness it again or if all the money he has made has made him lazy. The multi million dollar question. He is more likely to be available than Reyes. But, do we want him? At any price?

And they still lost. His amazing angle on the Weeks fly ball led to a nice inside-the-park job. I think it is safe to say that Stubbs has no effect on how this team does, he plays well and they lose, he sits or strikes out 3 times in a game and they win. Based on a crazy stat on fangraph, Drew Stubbs in the lineup gives them a -7.79% chance on winning a game, and I tend agree based on how he plays. :hm

After watching half the season I would agree. His WAR (Wins Above Replacement) is only 2.1 games for an entire season. Its probably a lengthy algorithm of stats that mean nothing to the average fan. There is also a stat claiming that he has below average range in the outfield and saves only 2 runs a season with his defense. He has actually missed over 10 balls that he should have caught based on his percieved range and has yet to save a homerun despite having 9 chances. :sh

The Reds are getting exactly the opposite of how they won so many games last season and even started this season. They are not playing good baseball right now. :hm
Heading into the break they have some blaring issues:
Still have no leadoff hitter, Stubbs is absolute trash of late, he has scored 3 runs in the last 10 games and two were today. 7 for 39 and 0 RBI's with 11 K's. :td
Their rotation has no direction right now, luckily Willis looked really good today, they need to figure out who their 5 are and most importantly the top 3, right now it looks like they have merely 2 pitchers. :sh

People are calling for us to get an upgrade in left field, but Heisey's numbers look better than Stubbs' do with significantly less at bats. Even numbers in avg., HR, and RBI. The only downside is the lack of stolen bases, but it's kinda hard to steal bases if you can't get on base to begin with. Imagine what Stubbs' number of stolen bases would be if the kid could hit. He could put up Ricky Henderson type numbers. Sadly, he can't hit, though. Move Heisey to Center, and get a trade done that gives us a power bat in LF.
Also, Votto isn't getting it done the way he's supposed to. He's hitting for average, not hitting like a true 3-hole hitter should. Our 3-hole hitter should not be in love with singles. Where's this guy's power this year?

Same reason they deserved to lose the game yesterday but pulled off some miracle. They haven't won consecutive games in 22 games. Luckily for them no one in this division can pull away. Not really, the Reds have been fortunate to win extra games this season already. Its a carry over from last season, they shouldn't even be in a lot of games they pulled out of their ass. This is sarcasm, right? With the exception of putting Gomes in the lineup for his bobblehead day and being forced to play Cozart over Renteria, we still see the same old Dusty lineups day in and day out, the same old lefty vs righty battles that don't work, poor choices in the pen, and just blatant mismanagement late in games.
I really want to like they guy, b/c he's a great personality in the clubhouse, but these mistakes have just been boneheaded. Sticking with guys way too long b/c he's a players' manager is another thing that irks me. Mismanagement, plus the baserunning errors by the new guys and Stubbs, and the problem this team has hitting with .risp is what is killing us right now.

I think the exact opposite. I think they're forcing him to play Cozart and Heisey and he wants to insert all of these jokes instead b/c he's a players' manager and wants to see them succeed. He's too kindhearted to tell them that they suck, so he gives them a chance to go out and try to keep their careers alive.

12 days to the deadline, are the Reds going to be movers? If they stay with the team they have they are likely going to finish no better than third in this division (assuming the Pirates don't get better). I think the only team they can match up decent with is the Pirates, but all the rest of those series are in Pittsburgh. The Cards and Brewers are clearly better teams right now, even if they have the winning record against the Cards. :sh

The best offensive team in baseball is a misleading stat, but the announcers (other than Marty) see it as we are on top. We can't score for three games, then on the fourth game we score 7-10 runs. Those few games inflate that stat and make us look a lot better than what they are.
Right now the biggest thing I'm worried about is hitting with risp. I wonder how many baserunners we've left on base this year. I'm willing to bet we lead in that category as well.:r

Not trying to start an argument here. Just some good old baseball discussion.:)
Another loss for the Redlegs. Last 2 game win streak was June 15. I'm starting to think it's officially over for us.
Are you implying that Dusty is the Mike Brown of the Reds, allowing players to try to resurrect their careers in Cincinnati? :r
The problem is it seems like they (Dusty or someone higher up) are forcing young players down our throats that aren't good because they have no other options (Stubbs, Bruce when he is slumping, Bailey, Chapman, Volquez) and they are 'homegrown' because they don't want to be wrong. Where they have high priced older players, they are forced to play them because they 'owe' them (Rolen, Gomes, Renteria, Arroyo). :td
They need to be making moves at the deadline. I like Cozart, but their outfield talent is so sub par that they could change 2 of 3 of them for a huge upgrade. We'll see if they do anything. :hm

As long as they don't get rid of Bruce, Phillips, and Cueto, I don't care who we trade right now. Votto's gonna be gone after 2013 (I'm pretty sure), Stubbs sucks, Heisey and Cozart are too new to judge yet (so I could care less), Rolen's through, Gomes sucks, Lewis is nothing but a backup/bench player, Hernandez is gonna be gone this year too. Oh yeah, and FUGG Chapman and his $30 million. The jury's still out, but he looks like a bust right now.
Bruce is still working on things, but he's slowly improving, Phillips is the heart of this team, and Cueto is our ace.

Yes, Adam, we are an error prone team this year, but the high number tonight I will chalk up to emotional baggage. Mets didn't outplay us offensively, it was our errors that did us in tonight. It wasn't the usual bases loaded and leave 'em all stranded routine that this team likes to play.

Teams have scouts in the minors. True, he should have been brought up earlier if they wanted to showcase him in the bigs, but most scouting reports say he's a big liability in LF. I think he's up here on such short notice to hide that a bit and to showcase his hitting ability only. He's a slow guy, but he can hit. He should be playing at first, but Votto has him blocked.

Talent. Now thats funny. There are about 5 players on their roster that would be considered a talent. Votto, Phillips, Cueto, Cordero and Rolen are about the only 5 this team couldn't really do without. No one in their outfield couldn't be upgraded. SS was a bad group before Cozart came up and is once again a liability. Catcher is a toss up, unless you could put the two of them together. Their rotation is suspect at best, 2 of them wouldn't be 5's on most rosters in the MLB. ;s
They got very lucky to win the division last year by beating terrible teams and playing the weakest schedule in baseball. Hell they won something like 25 games on the last out of the game. They were over-achievers and got run out of the playoffs. This year is just a continuation of last year with tougher competition. ;)

Win 2, lose 4, win 2.
Looks like Jocketty had no interest in making trades this year. Guess we're gonna have to ride it out. No matter how good a player may have been if we had made a trade, it wouldn't make a difference anyway with this team. At least Gomes is gone.
