It is definitely nice that no one but Cleveland (who happened to be some of our interleague games, even though they are garbage) considers us a 'rival'. No one gets up to play the Reds and it shows. Thats the advantage of not having success in a decade, weak schedule and no one gunning for you, particularly this late in the season. None of these teams are worried about raining on our parade.

Oh, I'm sorry Dan. Did someone interupt your "Reds win" posts with actual sports discussion? I have been posting sports discussion all along, but you must have missed it. Maybe because you skip all the posts with actual talk about the team or because when they lose you ignore the thread all together. :hm

And as far as the 'Cuban Missle' is concerned, I would like to see him place that 105 MPH heater in a spot not 2 feet out of the zone. I have a feeling that throwing 100+ will have far less of an affect on the MLB than AAA. Also, they better be careful not to burn him out. Last guy I watched throw 100+ (Zumaya) was decent for a year and now can't seem to stay healthy. Or a very recent example of Strausburg, I know they want him to be the starter of the future but having him throw multiple 100 MPH pitches are going to burn him out faster than his fastball. :2

The teams who are long gone from the race (see all of the NL Central), don't bother to try to shake up the race anymore. They all gun for the Cardinals, because they are the big dog of recent memory and let the Reds go on their merry way. Its working out well for us, but its not making us a better team. ;)

I'm with you about his arm being at risk. His location has gotten much better, but now is not the time to start risking the game on a guy who hasn't seen one inning at the major level. Valaika is just now coming in, but the entire game won't rely on him. I wish we wouldn't see Chapman until next year, but it is what it is.

His control has gotten much better according to reports. They've also been working with him on other pitches, not just that wicked fastball. Still, I hear he relies heavily on the fastball. I hate to see him burnout like Strassburg, but throwing 100+ all the time doesn't always equal injury. Randy Johnson consistently threw 100+ for a very long time w/o too much trouble.

I kind of knew Strasburg would have trouble. Just watching his arm in slow mo, he does all kinds of twisting that isn't natural.

Look at any pitcher in the back of their delivery and it looks un-natural.

Why would I cry? I'm sorry that I am not just simply a homer but a realistic sports fan. I think I may have seen more Reds games this year than you, the super fan. Good news for you if you didn't have to change alliances for baseball this year, but college football is upon us, so you'll have plenty of opportunity to claim every school within a 400 mile radius as your 'favorite team' starting on Thursday based on who is winning more. :r

Isn't calling him a "future Hall of Famerfor sure" prematurely annointing him, Adam? He has thrown all of 8 major league pitches. ;)

Alas, Tom, you are correct that all too many hurlers of recent vintage sucomb to arm problems. Makes you wonder why, really, as in the old days guys threw much more and rarely injured their arms. Somewhere along the way, something went terribly wrong!

One thing to consider is that back in the day there was a lot more foul territory in the stadiums, so less pitches had to be thrown. Today, the stands are right on top of the players (a good thing that allows fans to be closer to the game).

I dunno, Dan.

For instance, here's some info on my favorite ballplayer of all time, Fergie Jenkins:

For home games, Jenkins would always pitch the marquee matchup on Fridays and would then pitch the following Tuesday. However, if the other team’s rotation shook out so that their ace was pitching on Sunday, well, Jenkins would pitch on the Sunday too – 3 times in one week.

It didn’t stop there. In Jenkins’ day, he would make 40 starts easy. Of those 40 starts, typically 75%, or 30 of them, he would complete. Because he was expected to. He wasn’t getting pulled in the 5th inning because he had pitched 2 days prior and he CERTAINLY wasn’t getting pulled from the game because he had reached the magic number of 100 pitches. Of course he was also throwing his side bullpen sessions on his off days

While this may be true, it doesn't do anything to help the argument. There were far more complete games, pitchers throwing well over 100 pitches per outing and coming back on 2 or three days rest. A teams Ace would start over 40 games every season and sometime over 50. Why do you think there hasn't been a 30 game winner in 40 years? Players now are too fragile, playing for too much money and will get put on the DL for a blister on their glove hand. Its hard for a team not to protect their investment, but the players also feel too entitled to not get their regular rest etc. etc. :2

The problems the Reds have are not limited to just starting pitching, relievers, fielding or batting. Hell, even managing is a little suspect. The Reds are a mediocre team and haven't made any changes in the off season that really blow me away. They could get lucky and win 80 games and have a chance at the Wild Card but as of right now they are the 3rd best team in their division. :hm

How bout manager of the year? I hear Dusty's got a decent shot at it this year. Black was looking good but they're on the skids right now. The Giants may take away any hopes he had at that award.

It'll suck if they give it to Cox out of sentimentality in his last year.

The top 2 teams in each division are:
ATL 66-48
PHI 64-50

STL 64-49
CIN 64-51

SD 67-46
SF 66-50

Against these teams, the Cardinals are 20-13 (ATL - 4-0, PHI - 4-4, CIN - 10-5, SD - 1-2, SF - 1-2)
and the Reds are 12-20 (ATL - 2-3, PHI - 2-5, STL - 5-10, SD - 1-2, SF - 2-2)

Of course the head-to-head match-up between STL and CIN affects these records a lot. If you don't include those games, the Cardinals are 10-8 and the Reds are 7-12.

Opponents with winning records would also include: FLA 57-56, NYM 57-57, COL 59-55, and LAD 59-56.
Record against all NL teams with a .500 winning percentage or better:
STL - 29-24
CIN - 23-30
Record against all teams (incl. AL) with a .500 winning percentage or better:
STL - 35-27
CIN - 26-30

Record against all NL teams with a losing record:
STL - 26-19
CIN - 33-14
Record against all teams (incl. AL) with a losing record:
STL - 29-22
CIN - 38-21

This data was taken on 8-13. It does not reflect the last series against the Cards or San Fran.

I know this team's been through a lot and they're tired and all, but Dusty needs to light another fire under their ass right about now. Yeah, we won two out of three against the Bucs, but those wins were just barely. We should be dominating the Bucs like usual, not squeaking it out in one run games.

Anybody seen tonight's lineup? It's full of second and third stringers. I'm all for the boys getting rest, but we still need to work on that overall win record. Sit Rolen, BP, and Votto, but make sure Bruce and Stubbs stay in more often than not right now.

I didn't see the line up. I am sure the 2nd and 3rd stringers were in b/c everyone was hung over. There was a news story showing them all out at a bar last night on the microphone. They said they stayed until 2AM when the bar closed.

By in large, the Reds as a team and an orginization have no idea what the playoffs feel like. Hell they haven't had a record over .500 in 10 years. They clinched the weakest division in baseball with 5 games to play and they celebrate like they won the World Series. Act like you know what you are doing. I know they likely know they are getting swept out of the playoffs, but they should at least consider they have more work to do.

The Reds may not be the best team going into the playoffs, but they made it. That's what counts. They could get swept, or they could sweep. MLB playoffs would be the last game I would bet on:r

(I would bet against the cubs in playoff baseball though:D)

You said none of the players have been there and you were wrong. At the beginning of the season you said "The Red's aren't good enough to have their own thread each year" and you were wrong.

They aren't good enough for their own thread each season. No other team has a new thread every season. The last thing we need is another thread you start so you can post smilies for your post count. :r

They won the weakest division in baseball and you are ready to give them the World Series trophy. Its a good thing that Andy and I can actually be objective sports fans and have some knowledge of the game, otherwise this thread would be about 89 "Reds win! Reds Win! :banger" posts. I know you will always be a homer, but try to take off the 'Greater Midwest Area Fan Glasses' once in a while. And we won't even get started on your sports predictions. I was wrong ~160 games ago, they won a bad division this year, I am not worried about it, they still don't seem to be the great unbeatable team you make them out to be. :tu

It's only a $100 fine. I say when the health inspector shows up, the whole team and Jocketty and Castellini need to light up and each of them throw a $100 bill at the inspector and say, "here's the payment for my fine"!

I don't like the rotation the Reds set. I would like to see Arroyo, Wood, Cueto.

On TV, they were saying how awesome Wood is against lefties (which the Phillies have a ton of), but then again, Wood is so young.

I'd trust volquez over Wood right now. Wood has looked better overall, but the team gets behind Volquez better than they do Wood.
