He might end up a lot like Adam Dunn, he loves swinging for the fences but sometimes just looks foolish. Stubbs looks foolish on a lot of pitches too. Its kind of ironic that the Reds annoucers still call them "two of the best all around outfielders in the league". There is a reason that he and Stubbs were both in the top 20 last season in strikeouts and they both start out there again this season.

2 more strikeouts each for Stubbs and Bruce today. Early in the season, but you need to put runners on base for the big hitters and they aren't doing it. Votto goes 4-5 and gets 1 RBI :hm :td

Yeah, by the end of the season they could end up one-two in the standings. They finished in the top 25 last season and wanted to start where they left off. ;)

That is my thought, although the Reds announcers would lead you to believe that he will be challenging for the HR crown and Joey Votto's MVP award. They had a poll question the other night on who would be the best hitter on the Reds the other night and both announcers said that Jay Bruce would be a better hitter than Joy Votto this year. Luckily most fans were smarter than the announcers as they picked Joey Votto by about a 50% margin.

Bruce has the potential to be Vottoesque, but he's too impatient. If he could learn to be more selective at the plate, he would be a consistent .300 hitter. It's up to him, but it doesn't look like it's gonna happen. By the time he learns that, he'll probably be in his 30s and on the downside of his career.

Arnoldis Chapman uggghhhh. Is it too early for the Cuban Missle Crisis? That guy can't seem to get people out and his velocity is down 10 mph. Doesn't look like he could be a starter (even if the Reds wanted him to be) if he can't even throw a single inning a day after an appearance. :sh

Bruce looked like a little leaguer at that last at bat. Straight down the middle with two strikes and he struck out looking.:td
I will give credit to the ESPN team for having an interesting an informative play by play and commentary team tonight. I miss Miller and Morgan, but Valentine, Herschieser, and Baldy did a great job tonight.

Jay Bruce and Stubbs love striking out. Gomes is starting to pick up the old strikeout bug too. Swing for the fences and whiff or watching fat pitches right through the middle. Seems like the only guy who is selective at the plate is Votto right now. :td

It seems that most broadcasters hate the Reds. On Saturday, Joe Buck was pathetic when Joey hit his HR. He just said "There is a HR by Joey" in the most monotone voice. When the Cardinals (forget who) hit one, he sounded like he was going to jump out of his seat. Screw Joe Buck.

And how did they do in the game? And how about the two more strikeouts later in the game? Why does Joey Votto, who leads the team in batting average, OBP and slugging, have only 16 RBI's? He is in the top 10 in most batting statistics but is 47th in RBI. Stubbs and Bruce have a lower OBP than Votto and Phillips have averages and all three of their outfielders are averaging over a strikeout per game. :hm

Why wouldn't you go after Reyes? They could certainly use a lead off hitter who can run the bases. It would also give the Reds one of the best middle infields in recent baseball memory. I know Dan is a homer and loves who ever is in there, but Reyes is a better option than Janish or Renteria. Heck, give up the future league MVP Stubbs and future Cy Young winners Mike Leake and Homer Bailey. :tu

He would be better than Janish offensively and better than Renteria anyday of the week, but look at how many games he's played in over the last few years. Also, would we be able to afford him? For him to be beneficial, we'll have to sign him with an extension. CoCo is off the books after this year, but I don't think that'll be enough to make up for Reyes.
Doubt it happens anyway, the article that named the Reds as one of the teams that Reyes could go to was written by Bowden. Other than bringing in Phillips and Arroyo, Bowden was pathetic when he was our GM.

Reyes does have a propensity to get injured, but when he is healthy he is a great talent, and who is to say that some of his 'injuries' are not wanting to hurry back to a crappy team. If they want a shot at keeping Votto, you have to put him in the playoffs these next three years and surround him with comparable talent. Reyes is a much bigger talent than Janish or Renteria. With no salary cap, and supposed more revenue from last season and an increase in revenue this year they should be able to free up the dough. If they can't continue to make more money and sign more talent, they won't have an opportunity to keep Votto because they won't be able to afford him. ;)

Maybe a reason that they are about to raise ticket prices?:hm
I agree with you in part. Janish could play a good backup to Reyes. Still not sure that I'm for giving up the farm and a starting pitcher to get him though. Pitching is bad enough this year w/o having to give up another half-decent arm.
I'd rather pick up a good LF and a good starting pitcher at this point.

Giving up average pitchers and a sub-par lead-off hitter would be more than a fair trade. Maybe not giving up a comparable package this summer for Greinke was an indication that they are suffice with what they have. They drop great players for projects and sometimes they work out, they have yet to go the other way around. Their farm system is pretty decent, but they seem to struggle on the big stage, so why not give up a major-leaguer or two and a decent prospect or two for a proven player?

I wouldn't give up Leake. I'd give up Bailey before Leake. I wouldn't mind giving up Stubbs either, but I'm scared of who we would replace him with in CF. Alonso could come up to play LF (which would be better than Gomes and Lewis), but there's not much to replace Stubbs' defense (which has been sub-par recently, but he's normally not that bad). Bruce ain't going nowhere, not with his arm in RF (I'm just sick of waiting on him to learn patience at the plate).
Who would you propose to trade from our farm system in a package deal?

I copied this post off of the Reds message board over at the Enquirer site:
Our current SS, Janish, is better than the Brewer's Betancourt/Card's Theriot/Pirate's Cedeno/Stro's Sanchez. Only the Cub's Castro is better than Janish in the Central. I'm basing this on Fangraph's WAR stats btw. Therefore, there is no NEED for an upgrade. The Reds are 1.5 games back from a streaking Cards team that will cool off. I also believe Janish deserves his shot. He was forced to be the second SS for a few years now and let's see how he does as a starter, Janish has earned it. If he is costing us runs through either defense/offense, then let's visit this non-existent issue.
The only part I don't agree with is the "there's no need for an upgrade", but I would like Janish to be a starter for a full season just to see what he is capable of as a regular. This is his first true year as a starter for our team.
But then again, life isn't fair. It would just suck for Janish.
Edit: The more I think about this, the more that seems to be the status quo. We need to have the best SS, not settle just b/c the Cards/Bucs/Brewers don't have good SSs.

Being better than everyone else in the NL Central got the Reds embarassed out of the playoffs last season after limping in on the heels of winning the weakest division with the weakest schedule. The Cardinals are about as streaky as the Reds, and the Reds have really yet to play a challenging series. Thank you schedule makers for the weakest schedule in the weakest league again this season thus far. :bh
The Reds will continue to force feed us their 'home-grown talent' despite the opportunity for a better player. See: Bruce, Stubbs, Janish, Bailey. All supposed to be the next big thing and none of them have lived up to the hype yet. Reyes leads all NL shortstops in nearly every statistical category, Janish has been dormant at the plate. Reyes leading off the games with a BA almost a full 80 points higher than Stubbs and putting Stubbs back at #8 where he belongs (or better yet, including him in the trade) could do wonders for Philips and Votto. :tu

Votto is a great player, thats why he isn't on the over-hyped-under achieved list. ;)
I still think some of Reyes spending extended time on the DL is not being in a hurry to return to the lineup of a team with nothing to play for. A change of venue and an opportunity to play in this weak division could be a chance for him to shine on a contender. :tu
As for who to trade, Stubbs, Wood, LeCure, Leake, Bailey, Renteria and Gomes are all trade bait from the big leagues in my opinion. Francisco, Alonzo, Cozart, Willis, Herrera are all viable options. :hm

Your package makes just a much sense, but I like Francisco more than Stubbs. If you keep Stubbs and get Reyes, where does Stubbs go? The 8 spot? Bat him ninth when a good hitting pitcher is in the game (ala LaRussa). He isn't a very good leadoff hitter and his defense is meh. He has missed getting to plenty of fly balls despite having the speed to get to them. Why not upgrade your offense and find a role player in the outfield? They have to have bats, not defense, as evidence by last years playoffs. :tu
I am still slightly surprised that Leake didn't get his suspension for stealing t-shirts. Maybe the diversion program saved him 5 game checks he can use to buy American Rag t-shirts. :hm

Stubbs likely won't ever be great. He has had more than enough time to adapt to the big show and still can't seem to not strikeout at least once a game. He is like Adam Dunn minus the power. The problem is they are all annointed before they get here and fans are expecting greatness, and homers like Dan can't stop thinking they are great, despite the results saying otherwise. I wish.:r
I'm sick of hearing about that trade. People still crying about it. I hate it to, but hindsight is 20/20. It's too late now.
There's still some hope for Bruce b/c he's younger, but Stubbs is what, 26yrs old? If he's not performing by the end of the year, then I say get him out.
First let's worry about getting rid of Gomes.:)
I'm not crying about it, but where is the foresight to see that Hamilton was and still is a great player? I would much rather watch two guys on the same team competing for the MVP each year than watching Stubbs strikeout 3 times in one game when I go to the ballpark. I guess, you win some, you lose some. :sh
Bruce could be a good player, still not selective enough, he is an all or nothing player at the plate. Stubbs just loves watching 3rd strikes and looks foolish a lot. Gomes could definitely stand to get released and find a suitable replacement, he is even a liability in the field and makes easy catches look tough (see: Jeter). :2

Yeah, send Chapman back down. Dude hit a guy in the back leg, and then almost threw it to the umpire :(
Holy Crap! Dan is actually criticizing a player on the Reds and his fantasy baseball team.
That guy hasn't had control. Ever. He just throws 100+ and everyone is mezmerized by it. Watched him at a home game a week ago and everyone just kept screaming, "Throw it 105". 100+ is just another pitch if no one swings at it when it is 2 feet outside the strike zone. His scouting report for opposing batters probably says, "DON'T SWING, can't hit the strike zone!" :td

He does that a lot, last game I went to he made a high fly ball look like a diving catch at the warning track because he got turned around twice and had to stab at it.

I think the Reds lineup is perfect except for Gomes and Chapman. I don't know if Gomes has any options left. I don't think he does.

Not sure where you got the sore losers part, the article has very little 'whining' minus the questioning of why they would hit Pujols. Lots of commentary on the rivalry and admitting that the Reds are the apparent team to beat this year. Maybe its the Red glasses. Some guys to offense to Pujols getting hit, same as if they hit Votto. Everyone admitted that they wouldn't have hit him on purpose including Pujols, but in the heat of the moment a few people got fired up. The Reds gesturing toward their dugout certainly aren't going to help much. The Reds won the series, and still can't act like they've done it before. Act like you've been there.

Minus the questioning of why they hit Pujols? That's the whole whiny part this time. I like Berkman's comments though. He's still a professional so far. It's guys like Larussa, Carpenter, Molina, Duncan, Laird, and Edmonds who give them a bad name.
"They took offense to it, we took offense to it, and the soap opera continues," said Cardinals acting manager Joe Pettini, who ended a 2-4 road trip as Tony La Russa's surrogate. "It's always something when you come in here."
Always something. I'll give them the Phillips comment from last year, but they complain about us every time they come here, whether it's the balls being rubbed down the wrong way, or Edmonds complaining about how the Cincy doctors ruined his career (which he ended on his own in a homerun trot) and how our club is naive, or Cueto ruining Larue's career (which he was already washed up and past time to retire). It gets old after a while. Glad to see Dusty giving it back this time when we went to St. Louis and he cried foul about the weather report.

Its back and forth, non-stop. Its like saying that Cueto, Coco, Dusty and Philips give Votto a bad name because of their exchanges. The Reds fans think the Cardinals are *****es and vice-versa. Trying to be objective is tough for homers, but its just sports exchange. You have to remember that this wasn't even remotely a rivalry until last season when Kung-fu Cueto and everyone else started mixing it up. The Cardinals were king-ding for about 6 seasons in a row, with the Reds holding up the bottom of the league. Its tough to be challenged for the Cardinals, but the Reds are acting like this is the first time they won a few series against a 'better' team. If the Reds think they are a better team, then there isn't much need for the jawing and gesturing at the opposing dugout. Its starting to get very heated, but it there is blame in both dugouts. :2

Well played by Brandon, the thing people forget is that they are just guys like everyone else. It seems slightly asinine that they have to write articles about it. He went because he wanted to, not for the notoriety of it. Guys spend time doing things they want to without the media having to glorify it or follow them arround and applaud them for it. It is nice to see something positive, but now its overblown by the media and people are going to expect him to show up for these kinds of things, let the man just go when he wants. Not a knock on Brandon or his decision to go at all, but the media glorifying it makes it seem expected. Well played good sir. :tu

I don't have a problem with them glorifying it. Much better than the media hounding athletes and trying to find something negative about them off the field. But I see your point. He didn't do it for the notoriety, but I do believe he did it b/c he's the ambassador for the Reds in Cincy (not to mention he said he didn't have anything else better to do and thought he'd go put some smiles on fan's faces).

Maybe its because the Braves won almost all of those too. Plus there are a lot more egos in baseball now-a-days. Add to that, the Reds and Cardinals have arguably the two best players in the NL playing the exact same position. They are the two best teams in a weak sauce division that lacks any other real rivalries. The Cards used to be concerned with the Cubs and now they are worse than the Reds used to be. ;)

Absolutely, he did it because he is a good person. The problem comes when he becomes expected to do these things by fans and media alike and it starts getting announced and he can no longer do it because he wants to. Its hard to go out in public and do those things when people know you are supposed to be there and hound you to get autographs/pictures whatever. I understand why big name athletes barely leave their homes because they can't do things they want to do without someone following them to the bathroom or interupting their dinner with their wife/girlfriend. :2
