Well there you go...now you have everything you need until you become completely discontented again. :D
I fell into the trap of 'normal' lenses in fast versions, but with the crop factor, they were not as great a buy as
I was hoping for. I bought the cheap 50 1.8 from Nikkor and learned the lesson with the DX lens, got the 35mm 1.8,
so it was a tie, win-loss. Congrats on the new gear. That lion won't know what hit him.

OK Sharkie, here is what I see. It appears to be a late evening shot owing to the light on the deer's face,
so you were already somewhat under the gun for light at what I imagine is full zoom for the FZ28. Because
of the performance of those cameras in low light at full zoom, that is actually a fine shot. You can't be blamed
for the dead vegetation in late winter, and to get the deer in that kind of contrast required the grass to
get a little hot in exposure. The ONLY thing about that shot that I would do differently is MAYBE pan right
a hair to give the deer a little lookspace. But this is not TV, so in point of fact, it is also quite well-framed.
What you are experiencing is what anyone with a DSLR-bodied P&S is going through. You are chasing
what Panasonic cannot give you, and that is perfectly crisp low light photos.

I scoured the review pages in a hunt for the perfect performer in any light. It was only after looking
at a chart of sensor sizes did I understand the full range of what they had been hiding from me for
so long. The literature and tech-speak had me convinced they could actually do it. But the sensor is
about the size of a half a hit of acid. About the size of a pencil eraser. You are lucky, the FZ28 was
born before they tried to cram 14 Megapixels onto that tiny square.

What you can do with that photo is bump the contrast a little, bump the saturation a little, and put
a timy bit of blur on it to merge some of the fine noise grain. PM me, or better yet, see a few pages
back where Justin tried to offer me some software that fell off the back of a truck. Download said software
and PM me for any instructions on how to use it to accomplish those functions.

OK Sharkie-baby, I did what I said I would do and here is the difference.

i UPPED THE CONTRAST, I hit caps lock, lol, I upped the saturation, I hit it with a tiny bit of blur,
I also used the Stamp tool to pick up a portion of that busy, viney background and used it to
cover up a portion of the background where there were leaves and debris hung up in the dense
scrub that was bothering me. I also cropped it to suit my own taste.

I think what I would say to remember that no camera is capable of consistently putting out pics that
need NO post-processing. EVERY photo could stand a little dab'll do ya. There is no shame in post-
processing, UNLESS you are in a contest that does not allow it. You shoot a bird on your porch rail
where you do not have to extend to the very end of your zoom range, in a time of day where the light
is strong enough to help you, and you will not see the one issue I had with the photo as being 'perfect',
and that was a little noise.

Hell, come to think of it, I could fix the grass, too....and did. In the second photo

I was not clear when I wrote that, but I was not gonna correct it unless someone commented.
When I bought a lens for the infamous FX camera, lol, I bought the 1.8 50mm Nikkor.
NOW of course, there is no real use for it, :( except at an effective 75mm equivalent.
But I DID ponder what would happen if the KKK did take my baby away, and I picked
up a DX lens in 35mm, wich effectively got me to 50 again (52mm, anyway). NEITHER
of them end up being a waste, since a 70mm equivalent lens in 1.8 is still VERY useful.
But I hate the whole concept of crop factor. Sad that both companies went SO FAR
down that road before finally going full frame. Diabolical, in fact. :fl

I loved the 50 I had when I had a nikon.

I had a 50mm F1.2 Nikkor that was an awesome piece of glass back in the day when I was shooting F3's. That and the 105mm 1.8 were my two favorite lenses for candid Portraits.

I wish I had kept some of the old "big glass" teles that I had...hindsight is 20/20 :bhd

They are a lot slower than B&H, but I have gotten a little too much sauce from B&H this month to feel

I am jealous of that lens, Justin, it would be nice to use that in a place like I shot this weekend.
I chased my tail with the aperture til i just had everything all screwed up, so I just shot a LOT to cover
all my mistakes. And I made many dozens of mistakes. It did force me to learn something though, and
I forced myself to read about Auto Focus sensor zone switching with the D-pad. It always sounded like a
pain in the butt to me, so I just skipped over it and figured I'd work around not knowing how to do it, or at least
practice it one day sitting around, haha. So I got the focus zone in the middle, which was EASY,
but wrong over a lot of the stuff I shot. Lots of perfectly focused BELTS and BOOBS and soft faces and eyes.
had I realized how easy it is to do in practice, i would have made much better use out of that practice trip last night.

What ISO were you at Brad? It's not available in your exif data.

I ranged between 800 and 1600 all night. TOO HOT, I needed to work harder with the aperture
I had to give. 1600 was not ideal. I might have capped it at 1200 about midway through the
evening. I need to look at the originals, where I know I can read the EXIF on the camera itself.
I can look at the items I posted here, too, specifically, to see where the ISO was.

What the hell you think I was shooting with, lol....:D But I didn't play around long enough to see JUST
what I needed to do to balance maybe a 1200 ISO with some other changes to find a sweet spot with
the aperture. I think I wanted to be a coupla stops short of wide open for clarity. But most times I must
have failed, because it looks like I stayed in 1600 all night. I am not sure why I couldn't get off that.
Surely auto ISO did not feel like it was that dark in the place. I must have been whacking that iris a
little more than I thought. I should have matrix metered and seen what the computer might have done.

This was a Sigma 10-20 F/4-5.6 With my DX sensor, I need my ultrawide to be ultrawide, lol.

The first one I ordered was REALLY wide, it was a Sigma 8-16mm. But it was squirrelly and would
not meter properly. Focused maybe one time in 10 attempts. Had a big ol' parking lot DING in the
aluminum lens hood, a nice dent and gouge. I sent it back as being not properly graded and being
a POS. Even with the ding, had it focused and metered properly, I was gonna keep it.

hehe

I bought a lens that came in today, too. It is one of the old dust-pumper Nikkor 70-210
4-5.6 that was trading at large online company A well below what another major online dealer
wanted for what I gauged likely to be an 'equal' product. For 60 bucks I think I found my sharpest
zoom lens. I could just be lucky on this one, or I could have been at a perfect aperture for an
otherwise messed up lens, It might be just the equally surprising great D100 body it is shooting on,
which was also dirt cheap. Either way, I have been dragging around D70s hoping to get anything
this sharp. Until now, I hadn't gotten these kinds of crisp and detailed photos, more soft and lacking
in contrast. But it tests pretty well on a D70 too, although a bit late in the day to be shooting such
a tube.

http://i954.photobucket.com/albums/ae23/JAMpromotionsMKTG/DSC_0074xx_zpsc62644c4.jpg

http://i954.photobucket.com/albums/ae23/JAMpromotionsMKTG/DSC_0004xx_zps209af2ce.jpg

These are just lens tests, but this lens is pretty decent at the short end and is mostly forgiving at the long end.
If I take some real pictures with it, we'll see. It is pretty long and tight with that dang 1.5x crop factor. So at least
I am not stuck with 2 burned out D70s, they just needed something either sharper, or better tuned to they're own
quirks to get the proper results. If you've been following, I have been mortified by the test shots I have shot with
the two bodies. But when it really counted, as it did with the bar shots I posted earlier, I was able to salvage some
good shots from an otherwise difficult night of learning. But learn I did. But in the end, I am just glad that I got a lens
that was being too cheap for its own good and people must have not trusted. Its a fine lens. I mean, for far shi+, lol.
Although it shoots decent at 4.5-5 feet for uncomfortable closeups.

Saw something that interested me yesterday. There was a thread somewhere in Flickr in the D70 group about
"how many shutter activations does your D70 have?" Well that's what everyone wants to know, right,
how long their used DSLR is gonna last? Or how many photos have been taken on that camera you have had
forever. Different programs read EXIF data differently, and other programs mess with your data when you
save a file inside their environment. But the SURE way to find out was interesting. Take a photo straight out
of the camera and upload it to Flickr. Then read the EXIF data. And for the D70 at least, it gives you the
shutter count to date on your camera. It did NOT work with my "new" D100. Or I wasn't paying attention.
The EXIF data is part of the "actions" menu for individual photos in Flickr.

This was a lower light photo I took with this iffy 24-50mm lens. With a tripod I might have been able to coax
a few nice pics out of this evening, but I had to go to check out the bar where the girls were playing. For
now I am judging ALL of my gear hand-held. I have a few tripods and a monopod, but if I can't shoot a decent
photo hand-held with a lens, it won't likely ever find its way to a tripod with me. But this shot shows the
weird plane this lens is in....not crispy, but not terribly soft anywhere. Hand held at the limits of the light
for the aperture and shutter speed. Most people would say "if you don't like the sharpness, why even post
it up? I like trains? I like the warmth. I am bored at work. OH BTW, Justin, my two D70s, ~9700 and 1700
shutter clicks repectively. I think they at least one must have been someone's problem child. I could SEE
9700 activations from a rarely motivated photog who later sold the camera, but 1700 sounds like someone
got rid of this camera early on and it keeps getting passed around, lol. Either way, this is their last stop.
I will shoot them into the ground.

less a D100, but SIXTY BUCKS, come on, what was I to do? Let someone ELSE get it? Let's hope it was Shark and

I always try to have a minimum of a .06 ND filter with me, but where I shoot most, in the Smokies, I rarely need
it and sometimes have to get it off there to get any kind of shot at all. But I keep it in the bag as well as a circular
polarizer. God I love a good polarizer, lol. Not great on sunsets, though. Man if Shark picks up a old has-been
Nikon like me, look out. I was shocked I like the D100 better than the D70 for now. I have not shot enough
with it to know for sure, but it seems much faster, and at least this one I have has EXCELLENT rich, deep
color. OLD as that thing is Shark, and it IS OLD, it is a very good idea for the sensor size alone. ALl of the other perks
are just gravy.

And now, brought to you fresh in the morning, a camera/lens test with the D70 and the supposedly terribly soft
Nikon 24-50mm 3.3-4.5 AF lens..... hell it IS kind soft there, but handling the indoor light well.

I almost had one for $60, lol. Granted I would have had to hot glue the mode dial down
in Program mode, but $60?? Come on.

And now that you can get a used lens to put on it for about 30-50 bucks that will take
decent photos, why on earth would you NOT pick one up? Hell I see the 70-210 I just
raved over for $50. Granted $50 today is not as easy as it used to be to spare, but
that's a great little used lens that is perfectly functional on a D100. There are several
perfectly acceptable walking around lenses for under $35 there, too. It's a scary good
time to be looking at old, useful gear. It's like getting a pound pup. You take in a very
useful, very durable camera that would normally just be space junk, and you are makin'
pitchers wit it. Don't fall victim to the pressure to upgrade.....too far.

also have a couple of D1X / DIH cameras available for about $100, but neither one comes
with a charger. THOSE cameras, at least the D1H, those suckers were FAST, like a scalded
dog. You could get 8-9 frames a second out of it, plus it had a 40 frame buffer in it.
JUST TO HAVE THE BODY IN THE BAG for when I needed something that fast would have
been worth the $105. But without a charger, its not worth it. Maybe to someone who
already has a body and charger and wanted a spare, but DAMMIT, I wanted it to work out.
In the end, I could have picked up a universal RC car charger that probably would have worked
decently, but I started adding it all up and thinking, hell, both my other D-series cameras
can shoot 3-4 frames a second, do you NEED EIGHT? But there will be that one event where
I will think, 'I coulda had that shot'. lol.

Absolutely not. Cause $500 doesn't get me what I want. $1500 does. :dr

So since there is no way I am spending another $1500 in photography,
(yes I have invested that already, but have gear for 3 people) I guess
I will be making do with this stuff for a LONG time. I like it....a LOT.
I am sorry I hollered about yu guys sucking a55. You were right and I was
wrong.

Now my sister has a D70 and a 18-55, a 35-70 and a 70-300mm, UVs and a bag.

My nephew has a Olympus E-330 with a 14-45mm and a 40-150mm and UVs

And I have a D70, a D100, a 18-55, 24-50, 55-200, 28-85, 70-210 and a few fast normal primes and a
bag or two and UVs and CPs and NDs. My entire lens range are duplicates of all my other lenses.
I am thrilled, lol. No really....I am thrilled. I take em out on walks and shoot the hell out of them to
see what each one can do. And I would never take them all out. But HAVING them all makes me feel
good for NOW, lol. I can pack an easy 2 lens bag and be covered for any planned occasion. And to be
honest, I would NOT have all these lenses if these old Nikon AF lenses were not 35-60 bucks apiece.
I would have that 70-300 cheapie G and a fast prime. But no one wants these old designs anymore.
Hell, I'll take em.

OLS

OOps, I forgot the one in the mail now...Sigma 10-20mm UWA lens. That officially makes me way over-lensed.
But again, one lens I paid 25 dollars for. One I paid 44 dollars for. For me it was worth seeing if it was an
optical dud or stud. The $25 is kinda shabby looking but is pretty sharp in rough outdoor conditions for which
I bought it. Indoors it is far too slow to shoot with. All the other cheap buys have proven to be solid.

And one other thing, thank the supreme being for Adorama. Had B&H not sent me a 1600 dollar camera
in place of a 140 dollar model, and the subsequent BS not put me off of them for life (well, for now),
then I would not have discovered that Adorama wants half the price for the same merchandise in old,
used lenses. Not always half, but its usually SIGNIFICANT. I wasted a few hundred bucks buying
from B&H on used lenses.

My Dad died 25 years ago this month, and every year or so I will stumble upon something in the vast collection
of miscellaneous crap I inherited from him. It has been a struggle, carrying all of this junk with me in my 10
or so moves over that time, and a lot of it has gotten tossed prior to one move or another. But he liked to putter
around Salvation Army and Amvets on the weekends, and he picked up all KINDS of 5hit. Last week I got the D100
in and noticed that it had a screw in port on the shutter release for a manual shutter plunger so you could remote
trigger without using the timer. I remembered something in one of the drawers in one of the chests of his stuff,
I always thought it was a kind of tight-space-whatzit-grabber, but I thought, OHHH, it might be a remote trigger.
Sure enough, it screwed right in and pre-meters/focuses and shoots with it just fine. Shame I had to spend so
much money to USE IT, but what the hell...I miss him.

When you get the camera, take a photo and look at the thumbnail display and scroll right or left through
the info displays...I think there are 4 or 5. Histogram, basic EXIF data 1&2, and general file info. In the 3rd or 4th item
on the first EXIF page there is the firmware version. Mine is a version 2.0, so there is that wonder and worry eliminated.

And correct, Compact Flash only. I only buy used, but the price can be about the same or close nowadays. Hard part is
getting them in 'Low GB" versions. Not that the cameras can't take the big ones, I think a properly firmware'd camera can
take at LEAST 8GB cards (?), It's kind of a waste to use more than 4 GB on that camera. You'd get too lazy and lose data
one day. 2GB are almost too small. But plenty, that's for sure. You could shoot a whole shack weekend like a clicking cliche'
and not fill a 2 GB card, cause it don't do vid-yo. One thing for sure, now that SDHC is in almost everything modern, there are
people EVERYWHERE with CF cards they don't need.

Cept' me.

You can pick up a CF-SD adapter for about $20. Basically a CF card into which you insert an SD.
Using one in a D200 and shooting RAW and the write speeds are certainly acceptable.

As far as cards, I feel VERY comfortable limiting the CF to 4GB. Very hard to shoot over 4GB in a day,
certainly possible, but then you need to consider not having all your work on one card, so it helps to have
and use spares.

Picked up the final piece of the puzzle this week, a SIGMA 10-20mm lens. I love a wide angle, and the only
way to get wide on a crop-sensor camera is to get something REALLY WIDE. I have a great deal of nice shots
with it today, I took a 5 mile walk and went out on a pretty dreary day, but when I COULD use the lens
well, it performed. Hard to shoot at a grey sky.

Good and bad in everything, this time I got mostly good.....

Ordered two lenses from Adorama just cause I didn't feel like stopping after I had everyone
taken care of and a full bag for me. There was a $25 dollar 35-80mm lens that had a cracked
filter thread, so of course it had likely been dropped or something. Then there was a low to almost-mid zoom for $44. I got them in today and the $25 dollar lens is as crisp and
bitey as any I have had in my hands. I am sure I will find it's weak point one day, but
I had to Laugh out loud on that one. The 44 dollar lens is NOT better than the little
cheapie, and I need to test it outside in some real world apertures and shutter speeds.
But right now, If I had to let one go, I would KEEP the lens I thought I would have to
throw against a wall somewhere. Now my sister gets the low zoom, which is funny in a
way. When you are at 28mm, the lens is fully extended. When you rack out to 85mm, the lens barrel completely draws itself back inside. Totally backwards.

The camera arrived today. It powers up and looks like it works so far, but not much can be done until I get a memory card and the lens for it. I did notice that the function knob where you switch between aperture priority, manual, etc. modes appears to be a bit touchy but it works. If that gets to be a hassle I suppose that I could get it fixed. Now doing the pee-pee dance waiting for the lens. It still shows as pending.

I wonder if they sent you the $60 special and sent the other guy the more expensive one without
the touchy dial? Of course they said that one was REALLY touchy................. Well, that and.....

I TOLD YOU TO GET A MEMORY CARD AND A LENS, DAMMIT!

Now, MY LENS is no indicator of future performance of anyone's else's used lens, BUT IF IT IS
EVEN CLOSE, this would be a good lens for you to have... (http://www.adorama.com/US%20%20%20%20540336.html)

I have that backpack. it is physically a little small on the outside, but it is REALLY great
on the inside. It won't handle a metric ton of gear, but it carries more than any sane person
would carry out into the field without a alpaca or a car. I think you will love it. It SAYS it
will handle 2 bodies and 3-4 lenses and that is true to an extent, but with two bodies, they
need to be all small lenses. Maybe one long lens lying down and 2 small lenses. But the
OVERALL amount of carrying places on it is superior in every other way. Like I said, if you
go into the field with more than this bag can carry, you are crazy anyway. Good choice.
One of the only new items I have bought since I started having nice cameras. Would buy it
again used in a second. I use the outside stretch pouch for a clean t-shirt on long hikes.

In terms of size, though, this is like a kid's backpack. It works out in the end, but it is small.

I draw the line at fancy grips, buddy....lol.

Well this is the weekend I give my sister her "new" dinosaur Nikon D70. Its gonna be fun to break all this crap out.
She is as excited as me. I won't even tell her that I am already entertaining a jump to something more modern.
(I am TRYING to keep it from myself, too). I also picked up a second Olympus E-330 body for my nephew, the first one
didn't have a working flash, which at first did not bother me, it took fantastic photos. But the more I thought about
it, the more I felt bad about it, so I found another one for $60 (first had been $99) and by sheer luck, the flash on
that one worked fine. SO for $60 I ended up getting him a working flash, a spare body, a spare battery, spare charger,
spare strap and the FIRST manual out of the two deals. So the three of us will all have our "new" DSLRs this weekend,
and the nephew is off to college soon, so he'll definitely get some use out of his grad present. What a good feeling
that almost trumps the 10 hour drive.

Sweet. Weren't u gonna give her the d100?
I love the battery grip. Got the backpack in today and the 1tbhd. It's a 2.5" small form factor. I love that. It's also USB 3.0 and so is my desktop so transfer is relatively quick compared to 2.0

I got the rest of the stuff that I need on order. 4 GB memory card, USB cable, and a telephoto zoom lens. :noon I've been reading some from the manual, and the AF function on this camera seems pretty straightforward. Nice shot Ron.

Thanks. I had to go out and buy the 35mm f1.8 lends for my D100, and a memory card. Yeah the autofocus seems a bit fussy, in fact this was manual focus, down to the closest distance, with the lens open all the way in aperture priority mode, ISO 200. White balance in sunlight in auto mode looks a tad blue, but that can be compensated

emopunker2004
03-30-2013, 04:27 PM
Yep. If u shoot raw I would use auto wb. Easy to correct in post. Is 200 as low as the ISO goes?

So you now have three lenses, Shark? 18-55, a tele zoom and a 35mm 1.8?
That's a nice grouping.
A few days left on my Easter vacation, then its back to the grind in Memphis. I will be in
the Western NC mountains tomorrow, so I will try to shoot something good. I took some
photos in Charlotte yesterday, my nephew drug me and his new Olympus DSLR around town
and showed me some nice scenes. The light was perfect downtown yesterday. As is the
usual with the D70, I get 1/3 gold, 1/3 crap, and 1/3 crap that can be fixed in Photoshop.
If I get it together tonight I will post a few of the shots I took yesterday. Some of them
are REALLY nice. Pedestrian but nice for me so far. I am evolving with my skills on this
camera. I was a master of the P&S camera, now I am a roundhead again, a plebe.

Went to Memorial Park today. Here's a few shots from the trip. I'll have to make it two posts.

Thanks. I didnt even notice the spider web in the image when I took it. Took it with the 70-200 f/4L. Should tried it with the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. Although the focal length may have had the 2.8 to 4 point moot in regards to DOF.

Great photo op coming up this weekend. Not so great for the person whose funeral I am attending,
but it is early enough on Saturday that I can drive over from Baton Rouge to New Orleans to shoot a
good bit. Out of the past 9 weekends, I have been in NO once for Mardi Gras, and counting this weekend,
THREE funerals, and once in Charlotte for Easter and again in Nashville to herf with Bill86. 7 out of the last
9 weekends I have been on the road, and I am sick of it. You would think being out of town would be just
as effective as being at HOME, the goal is NOT to be at work. But not having those days to loaf around
really wears on a person after a few months.

But again, since I am not the one going 6 feet under, I guess its all good. I will be all alone in NO,
with no one to tell me we need to hurry along, or we have to be here by this time or that. I will be able
to shoot as long as I want wherever I want. I should come up with some dynamite shots. I can't think
of a more photogenic city than New Orleans

Samyang.................great name. I think I will prefer my Sigma 10-20. Same basic effect without the
distortion........well...not as MUCH distortion, lol. Although there are times when ONLY a fisheye will do.
I will say ONE thing, though. Out of all the lenses I have ever owned, shooting ultra-wide is more fun
than any other kind of shooting I do, except for nude glamour with ANY lens. There was a time when
I would walk up to a woman in a bar and hand her my card and offer to shoot her nude. You'd be surprised
how often I was able to complete the sale.

BTW. The Samyang/Bower/Rokinon/Pro-optic Fisheyes and 14mms are actually really good lenses if you don't mind having to MF and use the aperature ring on the lens. MF on this is a joke though. Being a 8mm fisheye the DOF if so large that you really don't have to MF unless it's something really close. The lens body is all metal too.

Hey, now, I was not saying anything sarcastic about SAMYANG....I was only saying what a great name it is....
SAMYANG, it is fun to say. I have some Nikkor lenses that are embarassingly BAD. The test of a lens is
how it performs mounted to a camera. I was not capping on your lens, Justin... :) In fact, after spending a
day in the French Quarter shooting, not only do i want to drive 6 hours and do it again today, but I was knocked
OUT by the performance of my ultra-wide lens. NEVER have I had a lens SO FUN TO SHOOT.

OLS

WOW, apparently yesterday was a magic day for shooting. I had to drive down to LA for a funeral, and I couldn't
get out of the funeral fast enough, it was in Baton Rouge, and drive over to New Orleans and park ANYWHERE
and just shoot, shoot, shoot. I swear once I saw the results, I was SO ANGRY that I did not take a laptop and
just pay for a motel and shoot today, too. The sky was absolutely PERFECT for shooting. The cameras,
ehh, they didn't perform so well. The D100 was all over the place in terms of exposure, and even if I WANTED
to constantly monitor and adjust it, the LCD is too small to even SEE what you have, so I just shot away and
hoped for the best. The D70 did very well, but of course, it had the 10-20mm on it.

Wish I could have been further back on this one to include the whole guy. I just liked this one

http://i954.photobucket.com/albums/ae23/JAMpromotionsMKTG/NOstandard200SIZED_zps2d6fb155.jpg

I figured i would just leave this one un-adulterated....it could use about.8 CCW rotation. It just shows the power
of the wide angle. I am nearly on the sidewalk in front of this huge building

http://i954.photobucket.com/albums/ae23/JAMpromotionsMKTG/NOstandard260SIZED_zpsdfc2eeb2.jpg

I know these shots are not very "French Quarter"....I have hundreds of great shots of that kind of stuff, too.
I just think these shots are cool.

Brad, you mention that your D100 is all over the place with metering, mine seems to be a bit off with white balance when I leave it in automatic mode. Do you have the same issue? I know that you can compensate a bit either way in the settings. Just curious to see if that's common with this model.

On the whole, neither the D70 or the D100 is very good at 'auto white balance'.
Maybe I am better suited to use the alternative, with my lifetime working in TV,
where I set the white balance manually at the start of every shoot. You simply
call up the 'pre' setting with the command dial and point the camera at something
white and half-press the shutter. (I THINK this is the way to set it, I have forgotten)
I find that you have to treat this as a much more complicated deal than we from the
Point and Shoot side are used to. You need to think about what you are about to
shoot before you go off and snap away. The three things I have found most
important with these cameras is to learn the auto-focus zones and how to move
them around with the Directional pad, and second, finding the best metering mode
for the situation, and practice is the only way to really know. Thirdly, you have to
USE THAT FILL FLASH. Your battery is going to last WAY longer than we are
accustomed to, and you should ALMOST use the flash on every shot outdoors.

I get in the most trouble when I get overly excited and just start firing away
and forgetting that maybe the clouds have come up big time and my old WB
setting is no longer valid, or I failed to look at the result on the tiny little screen
and noticed that I am shooting way hot or way dark. When I slow down and
think first about what I am shooting and what I want, and then adjust the camera
to get it ready to do it, I find I get pretty reasonable shots. After that I still have
a bad habit of shooting the rest of the day with the same basic settings. I did it in
New Orleans. I set up both cameras with a few test shots, and then shot for two
hours without caring about anything but the subject. It hurt me badly, but not
TERRIBLY.

let me show you what I mean, Shark....THIS SHOT could have been incredible, and it ISN"T BAD,
but as you can see, it needed exposure compensation to tame that sun. The guy is playing under
basically a beach umbrella.

[http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8243/8627157275_63222e2307.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/57220843@N08/8627157275/)

And the same thing with this shot. I had to Photoshop it down JUST to get it to where it was ALMOST
worth a crap. But the LCD is so small, I am not sure how well I could have been alerted to the hot shot
anyway, in my absent-minded rush to shoot. I think the main thing to remember with that camera is to
shoot a LOT of shots and angles of EVERYTHING you find interesting. You are unlikely to run out of room
on your card if you dump your shots at the end of the day everytime you shoot. The reason I say that
is that you can literally shoot five clicks on a subject and get 5 different exposure levels. At least that's
what I GET on mine.

I could care less and always shoot auto. Wb can easily be corrected in post if you shoot RAW. Sometimes I set it to fluorescent or incandescent though if shooting inside

I think it is all in what a person prefers; I almost always prefer a bit wider view so the other shots work better for me,
but in terms of intensifying the action, I guess the crops work pretty well. I would also leave more room for the
surfer to 'surf into' so to speak. and leave the greater proportion of the cropped photo open to the left, but that
is also another preferential deal, and not a rule of composition per se.

The saga continues.....

I had a Nikon D90 in the kart at Ado last night. Came in this am after 'sleeping on it' and found it GONE.
WHEW, mission accomplished. A man who has bought 5 used bodies in 2 months and still has two does NOT
need another one. Still, by lunch I had found one at my new mortal enemy, B&H. I ordered that one
and then in less than ten minutes, tried to cancel the order by phone. 'Ike" assured me that it was cancelled
and that a cancellation confirmation would be coming my way very soon. Well, that was hours ago. I do NOT
think a confirmation is coming. So I guess now I have a D90 coming. Funny, when I need B&H to be fast,
they are slow, and when I need them to be slow they are fast. Another reason to stick with Ado....they're
ALWAYS SLOW.

Last night I had a dream. I was looking at the large LCD on the back of my Nikon DSLR. Now of course,
I DO NOT HAVE a large LCD screen, I have a D70 and a D100. But in the end, the only reason I thought
I wanted a D90 was for the screen. Anything else I got was a bonus. I love my D70, but I am too old
to be peeping at that little one inch screen. WTH good is something that small? I can't hardly tell $hi+
about what I need to correct from looking at it. But the real reason I was trying to cancel it was that
in the end, I realized for $70 more I could have a D300. I wanted to go to Ado and pick that up instead.

I REALLY wanted a D700. I love the idea of full frame, I had already SHOT with it after the infamous shipping
error. But in the end, I do not have expensive lenses or fast lenses. Full Frame would only serve to highlight
that fact. I would lose the "sweet spot" of the lens projecting onto the crop sensor and likely end up with a
lot of blurry corners in full frame that I would obsess about. So unless I miss my guess, I have a D90 coming.
You'd think I would be more excited.

By the way, make no mistake about it, yes I wanted the larger LCD for my old eyes, but the reason I tried to
cancel the D90 and quickly get the D300 is that it has lens adjustment system that can "fix" lenses that
don't autofocus where you think they should. The camera can recall the adjustment settings from
lens to lens. Since I have 90% used lenses, some of my lenses are not exactly perfect. But now that
the whole sitcho seems officially screwed, ehh, I can still enjoy my 3" LCD and just move on.

GWN, I think you mis-read my meaning when I talked about fixing lenses. i am not talking about fixing
the effects of lens distortion in post, I am talking about a lens that consistently focuses on the wrong plane.
If I have a lens that is always focusing in front of or in back of the point where I intend it to and IT SAYS it
will, these more advanced Nikons have settings where the camera body recognizes a particular lens and
adds or subtracts distance to compensate, theoretically resulting in crisp images every time. If I had a lens
that consistently focuses behind where I want it to, I can dial in compensation.

Lightroom cannot focus an image that is already taken blurry, lol. OH that it COULD, haha.

OLS

Nah Shark, if I can take it, you can take it. We just need to get better at using our cameras and
take the LCD out of the equation. But one bit of temptation I WILL throw at you is the fact that I kind
of took it for granted that my 50mm f/1.8 lens was good, and didn't need 'testing' as I like to call my evening walks.
I took it out last night, and where I used to only use my cheapie, used, bargain lenses in testing, to see which
ones I would give to my sister for free, lol, last night I wanted to have a lil bhokeh revolution. I took out
the D70 and my 50mm 1.8 and ramped the shutter speed up so high that even with all the remaining daylight,
the lens was stopped WAY down, not to it's max wide open aperture of 1.8, but around 2.8, and shot a bunch
of stuff. For what is basically a $100 lens, you talk about nice photos. you can get em new for $115, used for
around $90. In ALL of the fast prime lenses out there, only one stands out as being a real bargain to me. It took
my D70, and will take mine and your D100 into a much nicer territory. You oughta look into one, Shark, before
you waste your money on an upgrade YET. Let those Nikon D800s and D7100s filter down a bit to all those
folks that just HAVE TO HAVE those new cameras, and around Christmas, get yourself a nice D7000.

These whipper-Snappers like Justin need those fancy doo-dads to shoot pichers, us ole folks can squeeze
art out of ten year old gear, lol. Kidding, Justin, you know I am.
