Soo..um..when traveling...you guys carry a tripod, small pocket pod, or nothing?

steady hands ;)

Need something for some long night shots tho... I like a gorillapod for limited space traveling. Beanbag will do surprisingly well in a pinch also, and takes up even less space (obviously less flexible, but still good).

40 or 50D with e2n battery grip makes it sorta feel like a Mk (awesome purchase for shooting more comfortably in portrait)

I used to shoot with a 20d+grip and LOVED it (used to shoot with a 1d mk2 next to it also)..... but after a couple years my wrists couldnt take the weight anymore and I went to 5D's with no grip and got used to cocking my arm upwards.... much happier now :tu

Snapped this today after I taught my undergrad class. Such a beautiful day ... I'm surprised converting it to B&W was the right move (it really was).

I have a T1I also and was recently "appointed" my sister's wedding photographer. Which I really look forward to doing but my flash situation is "limited" and would like results.

The more I use the T1I the more I like it but have found that in many situations that "Auto" feature does not get the results I am looking for not only for just depth of feild but also exposure. Also the stock lenses although OK are not where I would like them to be either.

Boy, Ken ... don't take this the wrong way; but we've got a lot to discuss. First, quit using the green box (auto). It will rarely give you good results. Switch to manual and start experimenting. Second, what kind of glass do you have on there? More important than a flash, imho, will be some fast glass -- a fast (f/1.4 or 1.8) prime or a fast-ish (f/2.8) zoom. Churches and ministers often frown on flash photography during the ceremony. Especially if you're using the kit (which has a variable aperture, at best 3.5), you're not going to get the narrow DOF you want for some of the portraits. Third, what software are you using for post? You *need* to be shooting in RAW and using wither DPP (the Canon software) or something like Adobe Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw to process the keepers you'll have. I find that the T1i is usable for small prints all the way up to ISO 3200 with post-processing. ISO 1600 should be okay for 5x7s and maybe 8x10s if you're crafty. ISO 800 will probably be key for big prints, though.

Go get on PotN (I provided a link above) and read read read. All that said, I'm assuming that you've never shot a wedding in a professional capacity and that you're newer to DSLR photography. If those are false assumptions, I'm sorry.

I actually take some pics the same way I used to shoot a M16A1....steady breaths and then just fold it while I squeeze. :D a good portion of my shots are steady but a few that don't have VR on the lense are just shakey...

I saw one guy with an extension under the camera...it was like he carried around a golf ball retriever and stuck it under the camera for stability.

Are you just talking about a monopod? Those are pretty common ... especially since they're so portable and some can double as walking sticks.

not really,
just rise up the iso to 500
set the shutter speed around 1/125 to 1/200...
i only use a tripod if the shutter sped below 1/20... anything above 1/30 i still can handle it...

I rarely use the "green box" now. I am using kit glass which I am not in love with. You are right about the aperatures with that stuff. I am not new to SLR's, have taken both college and high school photography. I think I have a good grasp on the basics and even had a Minolta SLR for some time. I have shot a couple of weddings but relied on outdoor light and not shot at the level I want to be at. The Bride/Groom still were very pleased but they really couldn't complain for the price either ;)
My sister wanted to save money and asked. So I said sure. She does not have as dicriminating an eye as photographers I don't think.

There are a TON of wedding threads -- a whole forum, I believe. I'd read through those. I'd also look at the stickied lenses thread if you're thinking of new glass. Read before posting, for sure. I'm "Dokk" over there.

It's a good/fun community. Really helpful comments & criticism when you post pictures. Careful, though ... they have the tendency to push people down their slope just like we push folks down certain slopes here. :D

Oh ... and check out the "for sale" forum. You've gotta be quick; but you can get some nice pickups there if you know what you're looking for. Lenses hold their value a little too well, though, IMHO -- too well for me to not just spend a little extra to buy new with a full warranty.

level out the horizon (easy to do in ps) Sorry it drives me nuts when landscapes are crooked. Otherwise great shot, love the way the water turned out.

And I Thought It Was Just My Old Eyes!:r

I too really like the shot I believe picassa has a straigtening tool.

Any flash recommendations for my T1i?

The horizon is straight. It is the perspective of the island the building is on that throws most people off.
Camera Raw has a wonderful straightening tool.

It a great FF camera. I'm not a fan of the banding issue (really a Canon camera issuse). Once you understand it, it's easy to work around. With certain lens it can hunt for low light focus. Other than these small issues it a great camera.

I use the video feature more than I thought I initially would.

1 foot and under. The lens in 1:1. There is very little crop in the PP. Mostly I crop out background distractions.

What makes these tough hand held is the DOF. To get f16 this close without blur, you need ISO 800+ with reasonable shutter speeds. This lens has no IS.

Darrel, apparently there is some sort of base stand that is made that allows a sync cord to be hooked into a 430 so you can use it off camera.

or there is this, although sort of expensive:

Oh yeah ... I've seen that transmitter before. One of these days (like in a year or two :r), I'll start following the Strobist program -- their Lighting 101 and Lighting 102 come HIGHLY recommended. Until then, I'm more interested in getting better at composition, working with available light, playing with DOF, etc.

Went out with friends after teaching, today. Had to shoot at ISO 3200 and f/2.8 because it was so damn dark (bar, indoors, overcast and near dusk outside). As a consequence, I took some liberties in post.

Thanks. Taken with my Telescope. A Celestron CPC-800 and the new T1i. I have a separate camera for my astro shots, but I wanted to give the new T1i a try. I'm still getting used to the camera, and seeing was terrible last night, but the shot came out OK. I have gotten better, just never a full moon.
Given the temp last night, I wasn't looking to do too much experimenting. Especially after my laptop screen froze over. Went through two batteries in an hour. And the hand control on the scope went screwy due to the temp as well.
Managed to get a couple good ones. I was hoping to also get Mars, but it'll have to wait until the weather breaks. The big moon wouldn't fit in the field of view, this the stitch.
And Spectrrr offered to cleanly stitch it, but I beat him to it. Thanks anyways!

Any particular glass to consider as an upgrade?

I would consider the 50mm 1.8

OR

Canon EF 35mm f/2

The way I look at it if youll be taking pictures in cigar bars you need the faster lenses. The 50 is good bu sometimes you don have enough room in a crowd. Thats why I say the 35mm. All depends on what you will be using it for mostly.

A vacation option would be the 18-200. We've been through this before its not a PRO tack sharp uber lens, HOWEVER, for vacations and taking pictures in the moment it gives you great range.

The T1i is a great choice. With 15MP and a 22.3 x 14.9 mm sensor you are pretty golden.

If I do switch from my Nikons with will be to the T1i , 50D, or borrow indefinitely a 5D mark II

Can some of you experts give me your opinion on this photo tent kit I was looking at?

Looking to take pics for the bakery website, and also double duty for my wifes website too (dog clothing).

What is something like this "worth", and is it any good?

What is the most I should offer on something like this, or can these be had relatively inexpensively?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

its not a bad price i wouldnt pay more than $75

You can make your own light tent
HERE (http://www.instructables.com/id/Cheap-Light-Tent-Alternative-For-Photos/)

And put 2 shop lights on either side

for quite a bit cheaper.

So, the T1i is a good choice of camera for a newbie. The normal lense is just fair and I should look into a telephoto lense for more diversity.

I plan on taking the time to learn the "ins and outs" of this camera to take all kinds of pics.

Would this package I found be a good starter kit?...

FWIW It has the same size sensor as the T1i and 50D. More MP crammed on a smaller snesor. Id still rather have the 50D

A friend is getting rid of a Canon Speedlite 430ex. Would this work with my D5000 or would it break something (like, voltage wise)?

Thanks!

I think it would work but I don't know that I would suggest it. The contacts on the shoe are different for each manufacturer.... so you would run the risk of those different contacts potentially causing problems for the flash and/or the camera. Not to mention you wouldn't be able to use ETTL.

used a 580EX Speedlight with a D70 years back (only thing I had that day, made do). As best as I can remember, It WILL trigger the flash (manual flash power), but it threw the camera into frequent error modes requiring a power cycle or possibly even a battery pull. So in other words, EXTREMELY DISCOURAGED!

The only way i could see it working safely is using a hotshoe to PC adapter then syncing the flash and camera vial PC cord.

This sit is usually very helpful.

Tamron or Sigma.... I think its pretty much personal preference between the two. Both are 2.8 I think, so are fast enough. However, not sure how sharp they are @ 2.8

what kind of things are you going to be shooting?

70-200 F4 is an awesome lens.

nifty 50mm is always a great choice for an inexpensive low light and portrait option.

IMO, 28mm is probably not going to be wide enough for a walk around. my :2 would be to look at the 17-40 or something in that range. may be a couple hundred more, but you're going to wither and die if 28x1.6 = 45mm is your widest lens....

I can live with the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L instead of the tamron and to be honest ill feel better about it too.

If Im doing this I might as well get the 70-200 2.8L it will just take a little longer to save.

I doubt Ill need any other lenses after those. lol The TS-24 is fun to play with though.....

I have the 17-40 f4 and it's a great lens. I would prefer the 16-35 f2.8 L, but it's $1K or more. The f4 should be okay for shooting trees, since they don't move around much...

My first (and only) two lenses for a few years were the 17-40 F4 and the 70-200 F4. Solid workhorses that will consistently and reliably get any job done you throw at em. I still have that 70-200.

I have since replaced the 17-40 F4 with an older model 17-35 F2.8. Its not as sharp at 2.8, but does give me the 2.8 that I needed, and its ebay rate is barely more than a new 17-40.

You may or may not need the 70-200 2.8. Its an AWESOME lens, which I have the pleasure of owning at the moment, but its overkill for some things, and heavy lens for walkaround. If you just want to go for a stroll with your camera, the size and weight of the F4 will make you much happier IMO :2

Wolfgang
02-19-2010, 11:13 AM
i already have a safe full of guns so i can begin to see the big picture.

Im not too worried about the F4 I rarely shoot sports or fast action. Most of my work involves a tripod.

The way I look at it with he three lenses ive chosen so far I wont really need any others.

Edit: Looks like we're on the same page Francis. The way I roll is like a tank. I carry everything myself. I usually backpack everyhting untill I get to the place I want then set up. I have a Canon G10 that takes good spontaneous pictures.

The G10 was the first camera that made me open up the doors in my mind to canon.

When I take the 70-200 f2.8 to someplace where I'm going to shoot all day, I really don't notice the weight to much, but when I'm just carrying it around, like when I walk my dag, it can get pretty freakin' heavy after 3 or 4 miles.

@ken

Most photo uploading sites compress the image unless you buy a premium membership. my camera shoots at ~3000 pixels but photobucket maxes sizes at 1080. The only site I have found that wont change the resolution and does not steal rights to your photos is Deviant art. Also certain color formats will not be accurate on the web.

VERY INTERESTING! The two photos below from picassa and flikr respectively, demonstrate VERY different color balances when viewed in firefox on my computer. HOWEVER, when I copied the image to my desktop and loaded it in photoshop (the "true" test of color) they proved to be identical........

The only thing I can say between them is that picassa uses a lot more sharpening when uploading.

What's the best/cheapest way to get into photography? I have a Canon 590IS, and I love taking pictures. I just lose any type of quality when the lighting is not Ideal. I love taking sports photos, but the action is usually too fast, and not enough light.

Can I get a decent lens to put on my 590 IS(a), or am I better off getting a DSLR(b)? I know option B will cost me much more than A.

Any insight is apreciated.

Actually its more likely the lens would cost more than the body. Im pretty sure you cant interchange lenses with your particular camera. An entry level DSLR with kit lens (or two if you find a package) Canons T1i with 18-55 is a great setup the other way to go is the Nikon D5000 route Both in the $800 range. Its really a matter of preference. Most guys here are canon fans and really they are great either way IMO. Canon is cheaper in the long run.

If you are looking for point and shoot most of them don't perform great in low light. An easy way around this is to use a tripod.

Or you could get a used Canon 20d or 30d and a nifty fifty for less than $500. The nifty fifty would be good in both the situations you mention, low light and sports.

What is the problem? What camera are you having the trouble with? New cameras take a little while before Adobe catches up and can process RAW files. So if they are coming from a relatively new body that may be the issue.

Yeah I was thinking mayb I can find a used body cheap-ish. I know the key is good glass or at least this point and time better glass. I have an adapter ring I attach to te 590is that allows me to add filters, but not sure about glass. Looks like I need to start a savings just for a camera.

My 15 year old Granddaughter. I snapped this with my cell phone while she was in makeup for a photo shoot. One of my old freinds invited her to do a shoot for a make-up artists portfolio. She thinks she might like doing this.
I can't wait to see the Pro pix!

Heres what a 30 Sec Exposure looks like with my "new" tripod and a 250mm zoom, which is effectively more because of the image sensor size. I am sure I could get it sharper if I used the remote control.

I think these are the first pics I've posted in here. Just a couple ones from this past weekend; I'm still processing most of them.

Mine is a mexican made "Fat-Strat" which I personally love. I play mostly acoustic Larrivee but when I have the electric itch its that Fender. Mine is nearly a decade old and boy have the prices went up.

Is it worth selling my d40 and buying a d3000?

Wolfgang

I just got a D3000. Keep your D40. The only upgrade that you get is some with the megapixels. Outside of that the camera is pretty much the same. You do get the VR lens with the D3000 but i would hang on to the D40 for sure.

The d40 comes with the 18-55 VR as well. I have it.

Im currently shooting the D40X with 18-55 no VR and love it but I will soon be upgrading to the D90 because of the screw drive auto focus. my 50mm 1.8 wont AF without it.

On a long exposures camera vibration caused by triggering the shutter release isn't really an issue (assuming camera is on tripod). The amount of time the camera may be moving compared to the amount of time the shutter is open is very small and doesn't account for much of the information gathered. Camera shake is an issue more towards the half second to 1/10 second exposures.

here is a trick too, if you don't have a remote shutter release use the timer. A two second timer will give the camera a chance to stop moving due to your shutter button press and will open after that movement is gone. For the really critically still shots, use the mirror lockup function (to further reduce motion in the camera) combined with a remote shutter release or timer method mentioned above.

Friend of mine GAVE me a Sunpak 555 and want to hook it up to my Canon T1i

1st - is there a hotshoe connector?
2nd - is it worth the effort?
3rd - Possibility of Damage to my T1i?

I understand I may need to use it in full manual but did I mention it was free? :D
