Brad, how did you get those smooth tonalities in the sky? I didn't see the digital artifact usually found in smooth gradations. Oh yeah, it's gorgeous, too!

Not sure what to say, Subvet, the sky was just that way, and the sensor on the camera must be good.
"I only use Nikons", lol. Shooting at the break of dawn through sunrise might be offering benefits I can't explain.
By the way, not sure if you caught my post in the non-cigar retailers thread, that if you want to order a cigar
print, you get a free one with purchase, because you ordered prints from me before I had my 5hi+ fully together.
Not sure how well taken care of you were given that fact.

Here is a shot I gathered last night at a gig in Memphis. I rode around town trying to hit 3 separate gigs,
and the entire night was a comedy of errors, until I got to a safe haven of sorts, the Center for Southern Folklore,
where what i do is FULLY appreciated. I got poked with a cover charge at one place I used to do really nice work in helping
them publicize, so I left there instead of paying. Was at another gig that was an evening to raise funds for the NIBI Walk,
a Water project with some native Americans to renew the Ohio River. I waited 40 mins for them to start (late) and then by
the time the show started, they said "No photos, please". WTF? LOL, no skin off my nose, it just surprised me. I think they
meant no photos of the Native Ceremonies, but I didn't stick around to find out, they already had me late. but then I just
decided to go to the CFSF downtown.

Thanks Brad. The only good things about the ice storm were the photo opportunities. I have at least a couple of weekends' worth of tree damage to clean up once the snow, and ice melts a bit.

More photos from this great night of music. SO POORLY promoted that I was basically the only person in the small venue.
I think the manager/promoter needs to think harder about how she handles her gigs.

I understand it is REALLY LOW now. Won't be long, though that thaw will be rollin down the river.

Fog on the water on the Caney Fork River. East Tennessee. This river is crossed by Interstate 40 5 times in just a few miles,
and I always want to stop and take photos because every crossing is photogenic. But there is always a ton of traffic
behind me or I am in a hurry to avoid falling asleep at the wheel near my destination 10 hours away. But this time it was
raining and no one was on my butt and I felt I could give it a shot.

I like the one that looks like cotton bolls.

I went out last night, speaking of cotton, on the Arkansas side of the river. A Flickr friend wanted to go out
and shoot by the river, and it had come up a good bit since last time I was out there. At first I was apprehensive,
but there was no trouble with railroad maintenance two-track roads, outside of some mud that was avoidable.

I put a texture on this which I rarely do, and turned it B&W, too....scene just called for it.

For those of you with Nikons, and not too many lenses, you might want to pay close attention to this listing:
http://www.adorama.com/US%20%20%20%20620147.html

When I see these this cheap, I usually BUY THEM, since I can always use a fast lens on hand that I can attach
to a body for sale or other use, rain, beach, etc. ANYWAY, at $54, this is a pretty SHARP lens and at a decent
portrait focal length for a crop sensor body. I would rather have the 35mm, but it is $174 used, so I back up 4 steps.
Normally I would say these things go FAST at $54, but many times its ME that buys em. But I only learned to buy
them so fast when I would THINK about it for ten minutes and it would be gone. SO if you want a good, fast,
cheap lens, jump on it now. It is in 'Very Good" condition, which some people would pause at, but I have generally
found their V classified stock to be pretty good. Its only at G that I tend to pass, unless its a D700 for $950.

NOLA was a blast. Couldn't have come home with a more diverse selection of crap if I had stayed on another 4 hours

As a kid (or and adult) in NOLA, you have this SHIRT, this hideous shirt you wear one day a year, or several days
a year for only a week. it is your Mardi Gras-colored polo, which if you think is hideous in the vertical stripe mode,
you should see in horizontal stripes. But I digress...I saw this kid playing on this railing while watching a parade,
and I couldn't shoot fast enough. GREAT key lighting from the ground source, outside a bank.

Man, what a day. I spent the first four hours of today online trying to decide whether to buy a used D700 for roughly $1200,
a new D600(610) or a used D3 or D800. When it was all over, I had decided that just because my D700 is experiencing
mirror return issues after smacking it against the pavement in NOLA, I can still operate around it and simply not buy
another camera. After selling a D90 and giving away 3 D100/D70's for Christmas, I still have about 8 bodies.
So while there is no shortage of backup cameras to my D7000, I have no dependable full frame body anymore
and almost all I shoot is low light environs. So while I can still take the D700 and shoot with it, once the mirror gets
caught in an up-cycle, I can no longer see for framing or focus through the VF. I can fire off as many shots as I want,
the shutter opens. And if I want to make the mirror behave, I usually just have to fire off about 8 shots of high speed
continuous to get it back down to resting in the right position. But it can't be depended on, its just there if I want to carry
two bodies and shoot two lenses without switching out.

If I got PAID to shoot, it would be an easy decision. But just because everything I do is for pleasure, I can still get away
with having a bum full framer. But what I shoot is ALWAYS a potential FUTURE cash cow, one day I hope to sell a
print of everything I like, so having something in the chain be intermittent is still a big issue. But like I said at the start,
I wasted a half day of work and still made it out to lunch without having spent a penny. So I am technically ahead of the game.
But what messes up the WHOLE equation is the 'for pleasure' angle. I simply can't justify spending even used-stuff money
as an amateur right now. I think that is what kept me from jumping, that and the less-than-attractive prices, even used.

----
I think what I am REALLY hoping for is that if I just STOP babying my D700, i.e. only using it when I have to have low light capabilities,
then I can get the mirror to start behaving eventually BEFORE I wear the shutter out from all the wasted shots trying to get the
mirror to return to a 45 degree angle after every shot. It will be hard, because it was halfway to 150k when I bought it. And believe me,
I have thought long and hard about bouncing it on the pavement AGAIN to try and reset it back to being a solid performer. Works with
a frying pan on all the old TV shows to relieve amnesia.

OLS

I think I realized what is going to have to happen. I can't keep shooting manual focus lenses on the D700.
If the mirror gets caught up, if I use AF lenses on it I should still be able to shoot, just not frame the shot.....hmmm.
My best low light lenses are all manual focus....that's how I could AFFORD em, lol. At least the D7000 works the same
way with manual lenses as the D700, and also operates in low light. Makes it a little easier to stay on the fence.
Having the money is the really hard part. ANYTHING I come up with is OK on money. Reason is just fighting
really hard today.

I was shooting some birds out of my back window upstairs the other day, and I had PULLED the second D90 I had for sale,
since I smacked my D700 on the sidewalk in NOLA. I needed a good backup and I was about to sell it. But not one
to let a potential buyer go away empty-handed, I gave decent prices to him on 5 other camera models and a lens.

But I had the D80 I wanted to sell to him attached to a 300mm f/4.5 I picked up a few months ago. SO I took some
photos with it to show him what the D80 puts into a file. These bird photos are all in fading evening light, so the ISO
was cranked. I needed DOF and shutter speed both, so, I had to do it. Hand-holding a 300mm lens ain't no job for
1/60th of a second, lol. So sorry about the noise in advance. It was getting late.

And even with the noise, ITS NO D90, but it ain't a bad D80. I am liking it more and more every time I shoot with it.

This has most likely been covered here before, but I'm a bit too lazy to read through this entire thread:

To begin, I'm a novice and after doing some research, I feel that I'm looking for something equivilant to the quality of a D90. Given a choice between the following brands of digital (DSLR) cameras 1. how would you rank them? 2. which would you pick? 3. why? Thanks in advance.

1. Kodak
2. Sony
3. Canon
4. Nikon
5. Minolta
6. Any others I may have left off

Dave, in my limited exposure to the world of DSLR's, I think your money is best spent on a Nikon or Canon. Each brand has it's pros and cons, Brad might be able to weigh in on the differences between a D90 and the Canon equivelant. I've only ever used Canon's and have been very happy with them. My reason for choosing them, I had a point and shoot Canon Powershot (3.2MP) that had a recall on it. Found the recall 2 years after it was issued when my camera started exhibiting the problem. Called their customer service and they sent me the packaging and labels I needed to ship it in and got it back in under 2 weeks. Shortly after that I decided to get a bigger MP point and shoot, got an Olympus (12MP) and it was garbage. The Canon took clear pictures, almost every shot with the Olympus was either out of focus or grainy (noise) as heck.
That's what started me down the road of DLSR's and since I had a great experience with Canon customer service, that's the brand I chose. I'm sure Nikon has equally great customer service. To me at least, it seems Nikon people hate Canon and the same goes for Canon people. I love the 2 Canon DSLR's I have but don't hate Nikon, just never had any experience with them.:2

So the D90 is around $700-$800 from what a quick Google search brought up.
That is in the neighborhood of the Canon 60D. I've heard a lot of good things about both of these cameras. Canon T4i is also an option. I had a T2i before I bought the 6D and as an introductory DSLR the EOS Ti series seems to have a lot of options for novice/hobbist shooters.

I will go ahead and say a couple of things...First I will comment on your list, but loaded with caveats.
Nikon comes to me much the same way that Jeff came to Canon. TO ME, canon made the best superzoom point and shoots of all time.
But they had REAL issues with unexplained 'lens errors' where Canon would tell you that YOU GOT SAND and debris in the mechnism
and there was nothing they could do about it. They also denied certain cameras ever had any issues at all. I had a Canon S1 IS,
freaking awesome camera. Followed up an even BETTER one, the Canon S5 IS. I was in the smokies, fell into a stream carring my
S5, thought no problem, I'll just go and get my S1 out of the bag. Turned it on. Boom, lens error. Never been to the beach,
never been DIRTY. Those 'hypersonic motors' SUCK A55. So I dropped Canon forever.

I really like Nikon, because I have been with em for 18 months as a newbie DSLR user, (loved my superzooms.)
I have handled and shot with 9 different models of Nikon DSLR body in that year and a half. ALL OF THEM
used the same battery. I never have to worry about chargers and batteries, I always know where everything is.
People all tell me here that this is not all that big of a deal. I think differently. I have handled 20-30 different Nikon lenses,
snapping them all over one camera to the other, they all fit, they all work, whatever body I grab. Automation is
all I lose in the most extreme examples. A LOT of my lenses are manual focus only, at least half.

I believe in Nikon's optics, and I believe in the layout of the better cameras, and I do not feel lost when I hold a cheaper model.
I like Nikon, but I would not buy anything very NEW from them, the earthquake really messed them up and I think QC slipped
some over the past 5 years. I think they will get it back, but for now I am retro-buying (haha, that's all I ever DID was retro-buy.
I also forgot that the first camera from Nikon I ever bought with a new battery type is the D7000 I just picked up last month.
Another nice camera.

The only thing I have to say that involves them BOTH is do what you are doing, talk to people. They are both outstanding,
leaping over one another on the way to the top, but always there. There is a NICE old full framer for sale, a original Canon 5D,
and I want it, its half the price of a Nikon D700. But I have to BUY a Canon lens to go with it, because I have none. I realized
if I knew ANYTHING about myself it was that there was NO WAY I would stop at one lens. So I had to back down. I am invested
heavily in Nikon and the bi+ch don't like her man runnin around.

Minolta is still a very good company, but with the top 2 names, you can almost name your focal length and there is a lens
for you, ready to go. With Minolta, Olympus, Kodak....they are not near as well-prepared for your needs. I would never suggest
against ANY manufacturer, they all deserve customers who compare and buy their brand in the end, because they all have a dog
in the hunt for now.

SONY...that's the REAL RUB. They are blood-smart. They have been ready since day one. They've been selling sensors
to EVERYONE...There's a SONY inside 80% of the DSLRS out there today. But that money coming in was not wasted,
SONY is making the best ILCompact cameras out there now. Their DSLRs are no joke either. And they are CRANKING OUT
the lenses. SO if you boldly chose Sony, you would not be left out in the cold. Plus SONY makes it easy to mount other
people's lenses to their bodies. They go out of their way to do it.

All that said, buy a Nikon from me.

Or maybe a FUJI Superzoom.

Nice review, Brad. After all of that from both of you, I'm still leaning toward the D90. That sucker seems to be everything (and more) that I'm looking for.

Had the opportunity to catch the Johnny Winter Band in a tiny 80-seat venue last night.
Lighting was minimal and I couldn't use flash, so had to shoot at 1600-2000 iso and handhold at very low shutter speeds but managed to get a few sharpish frames.
He's 70 but the hard life he's lived has aged him well beyond that. He basically had to be guided on and off stage and sat through the show. His guitar changes were done by an assistant.
But man, the guy can still play.
Last frame is my fave. Started to pull out more of the detail in the shadows in post and then realized it was better before.

Thought I'd weigh in on the discussion.
Canon and Nikon each have their pros and cons. I've been a Nikon shooter since I was 16 and bought my first "real" camera, an FG-20. My son is now 16 and we got him a D3100 for Christmas.
If I were starting from scratch, I may very well go with Canon for a few reasons. If you're looking to build a system, it seems there is more Canon gear available second-hand, at least in my area. I also like that their ettl system works with their lower-end stuff, while Nikon restricts CLS to prosumer and up models.
(Having said that, I'm teaching my kid to properly use manual settings with a collection of vintage flashes --- no cheating. Just got some replacement metal bases for my 285s through ebay that I'll be soldering on this weekend).
Yet I still find Nikon gear more comfortable to use. Ergonomically, I think it's better and I find it more intuitive.
What it really comes down to is glass.
Bodies come and go, and should be considered on a replacement cycle more on the level of computers than cameras these days. I shot my F3 for a good 10 years and it still works like a charm (though looks like hell).
You can purchase a top-of-line DSLR today for several thousands (hello F4s) and it will be a paperweight in 10 years. I have a D1s in my bag to prove that.
However, the lens you buy today will still be solid performers a decade from now, provided you treat them well.
Agree with Brad that Sony is the dark horse in all this. I have no experience with the system but it seems competitively priced and feature rich. A solid electronics company with which my only complaint is it lean toward proprietary technology. Then again, I've used Apple pretty much exclusively since 1987 so I'm kinda talking out of my ass on that one.
Like Brad, I'm sticking with Nikon, because I've already build a system (that's totally beat up but still functional) but I'd be hard-pressed to pick Nikon over Canon over Sony if I was starting from scratch. They all make solid products, though I've found Sony's customer service somewhat better than Canon's or Nikon's.
Canon has the sand in mechanism and Nikon had the oil on the sensors of the D700. QC is an issue all around.
I'd say choose the lenses you like, the ergonomics that work with you and build from there.

(PS, look back one post for my Johnny Winter pix :))

Great shots of JW!

That would be my advice as well. While it will be FINE to buy a body from me which comes with a lens,
you should be prepared to pick up at least one really nice lens. Maybe not the $1500-3500 lenses, but
something you can be proud of in a focal length or range that you really want to shoot in. That could
be anything from a simple fast 50 to a fast 85 to a fast 12-24 or something long for birding or sports or
boobs. A man can have a PILE of cheap lenses, but he ought to be able to impress himself when he has to.

I remember when I made the switch from P&S to DSLR, the photo difference was incredible. Then when I bought my first 'L' glass lens (Canon's higher end lens), I thought of the same difference as changing cameras. At the time, I didn't realize the difference a good lens can make.

Glad you got out to shoot, Ron! Makes me happy to see such color and beauty.

This weekend was my humbling party, my intervention. I broke my D700 over MG, so I had to go out and shoot with
a D7000 and a D90 in a dark bar. I never thought in a million years the D90 would save the entire night. Before I left to
go to the bar, I out-thought myself and switched to center-weighted metering on both bodies, because I thought I knew
why I was doing it. Too much black in the bar, then BAM, a musician. I figured I could have a perfectly lit musician with a
fading darker BG. Instead I came home with 318 shots of NOTHING. EVERY SHOT blurred to the point of uselessness. I was
trying to keep the ISO low and I didn't get the shutter speeds up high enough. (shooting with a 105 2.5 AI manual focus lens
on the D7000 and a 50mm1.8-AF on the D90. I got 4 useable shots, all from the D90. Most of this stems from the fact that
I can't SEE for 5hi+. I look at the LCD for exposure, not focus. I need to go back to sitting down and looking through a
dozen or so shots UP CLOSE before I think myself too good to make an error like that. So I ordered another full frame camera
and put the D90 back up for sale. It sure saved me this weekend though.

I was trying to show a brother some more photos I shot with a D80, but it appears that the only ones on my flash drive

I wanted to let all of you know that I had some cameras for sale. I have sold both the D90s I had up for sale,
so pickin's is getting kinda old, but I wouldn't sell em if they weren't able-bodied and in good shape. And if you
look at the pics above that I posted, any kind of half-decent lens will create a great photo. I really think that the old
Nikons had a look about the photos taken with that perfect 6MP sensor that is lost with some of the newer super-optimized
CMOS sensors. So if you want an old Nikon as a spare for fun you can check out my link to the WTS forum and check out the
wares. What I don't sell I will likely keep, but for now I am looking towards a world with fewer cameras in my care.

By the way, the bird photos above were taken with a D80 and a 37 year old Nikkor 300mm 4.5 AI lens. The light
was really bad, but I think it is still a thumbs up for the old Nikons.

Nice to see someone pick up a full frame camera...expensive, but to me, certainly worth it.
To me, with modern camera techno being pushed every further, you could have gotten
acceptable image reliability in low light, but I have a lot of old manual focus lenses,
and I want them to BE WHAT THEY ARE on a camera body. I love having a DX body or 9
in the closet where I can instantly simulate 1.5x reach improvement, but when I snap on
my 24mm lens, I want it to be WIDE. The 'real thing' wide. Gotta love full frame. Don't forget

I have learned something intriguing from this thread, now that I have perused almost a third of it. Anyone can snap still life photos (like my nooby camera phone pictures haha). What seems to separates "photography art" from most camera work, is the vision (that I don't seem to have) to capture something in its perfect moment, and be able to stir the audience - produce a "wow" factor. I mean no disrespect to the lot of us, but I think you guys also recognize the fascinating photos here when you see it.

Personally, I am really impressed by the...not macros, I don't know how to describe it - close up yet in intriguing angles of mundane things in life. The lighting does something incredible to it, the perspective puts the object, place, or being in a manner I never held in perception, and so makes the subject matter - especially when it's a mundane object - just spectacular and puts me in awe. I've stared at several of these pictures for hours.

I guess I just realized what photography is all about, lol. I'll do my best to get some other things in than straightforward shots.

Since I couldn't explain the type of shots I was finding exceptional, I linked them. I would appreciate any tips and equipment needed (if at all) to produce these results - especially the latter.

This one blew my mind in terms of finding something so minute in life, and being able to recognize it:
My wife and I went to Italy last year and here are my two favorite shots in Venice:
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7006/6697633111_5cf5f8194f_b.jpg

I can't take pictures of things the way I see life. I take hundreds of pictures on my phone of things I see and find beautiful, but pictures that come out are not as I experience them. These photos are incredible, because they looks as if the camera saw life the way the photographer experienced it. As said previously, I'd really appreciate any advice/equipment to produce this.

I know exactly what you mean Marc. I can't speak for all of us, but for me personally, I don't feel like I have the eye to take awesome pictures. I think I get lucky every so often. The dedicated photog's that produce great shots like you described likely carry a camera with them at all times. I can't count the number of times a moment has struck me that I wished I had my camera with me. I love taking pictures and I find myself more often thinking.....how could I or would I photo this, no matter what it is.
As far as equipment goes, I've seen some pretty amazing shots with cell phone cameras, but it requires a lot things to be just right. And there are so many limitations with them. Any DSLR produced now can give you what you need to capture good, quality pictures...IMO. To produce the awe-inspiring shots, I think you need a decent DSLR, a little bit of knowledge, for me a lot of luck :D and the 'eye' for what makes a great shot. I don't have the eye, I still think I just get really lucky every so often. :tu
I do really enjoy the hobby and while I think I can improve on my photos, I know that I'm not artistic at all so I'll settle for the fun I have while doing it.

I am like most of you now, torn between the subject matter and the essence of what Marc was getting at.
Cell phone photos can be as good as the VERY good imagers many of these new phones have in them.
But speaking strictly about cell phone pics, photography is certainly not just taking pictures, and what you
have pushing on you is the desire to shoot cool pics, regardless of the tool used. So if you are trolling around for
some advice, my best advice is always to improve the light when you intend to shoot something that you can
control. A cell cam might be easy to use, but never let that trick you into thinking that taking a good pic with it
is easy. To that original point, if you can improve the light, the camera phone will respond by giving you
much more even exposure as well as showing a much truer color with more controllable shadow areas. TO say
nothing about the possible improvement in overall focus and sharpness.

So what we now have learned is that YES, I DO have a camera I can sell you cheap, and NO, you need not give
up your cell-cam. Just make sure that if you are taking the time to shoot a pic that you want to rise above the
snapshot level, ALWAYS think first about the light. If you can get enough bounced light to enter your cigar studio,
your photos will go up in overall appeal exponentially. And by all this I mean DO NOT let your camera produce the
lighting for your photos. No flash should ever come out of your cameraphone when you are setting up still life shots.

Second I would say to shoot the heck out of it. If you go to the trouble of taking multiple cabs of PLPC
apart to shoot, make the most of your time, shoot angles, different formations of stacking, move the light
around. The un-definable quality you spoke of that makes any old photo into a photo that you LIKE is the
seemingly effortless interplay between light and framing that captures a NOVEL image for the brain. I can
look through THOUSANDS of thumbnails of photos and stop dead on one that my BRAIN perceives as having
an interesting composition of angles, colors or light. And I literally stop in my tracks and give it a longer,
bigger look. Sad thing about composition is, that while people try all the time to TEACH it, it is not as easy
as it sounds. Everyone likes different things and looks at the world in their own way. It is very hard to force
a great photo into existence simply by applying all the rules of composition to the scene or situation.
The best way to GET to where you have the ability to impress yourself and others is to take it seriously
and practice it often. Take the TIME to set up some good lighting. Don't stop with one setup and move
to the next box of cigars.

NO REALLY....explore the space.

EDIT: If this mysterious quality you spoke of is ACTUALLY NOT just a better overall photo, and you are
talking about how one item is in crisp focus and the rest of the photo fades away to dreamyness, THAT
is something different and less do-able with a cell phone. IF THAT is your white whale, that is as simple
as getting a camera that lets you control the point of focus as well as the lens aperture. Which is why
I offered to sell you a camera. Well, that's not true, I offer to sell EVERYBODY a camera. But we can
get you cheaply into the DSLR world in one quick shot if that is what you are after. If not, there is a
world of possibilities in that cell-camera if you adjust the variables you can control. (light, composition)

I realized I was talking too much and not showing enough. Here is a shot I made over the summer last
when i was visiting south LA to shoot. This girl had a birthday party coming on Sunday and they set up
her bouncey castle on Saturday afternoon, where she burned a lot of freeze pops while bouncey-ing.
The reason I post this is that this is such a cool lens, and now I realize that these were captured off of
Photo bucket...I must have not wanted to fire up my other computer. I wanted to find the EXIF data to see
if it was a 85mm f/2 or a 105 f/2.5 Nikkor. Hell I can't even tell you what body it was on, but I imagine a D700.

Reason I post it is easily one of my best lenses, a couple of AI manual focus lenses, (whichever lens it ends up being).
I love both of them. The 105 was under a hundred and the 85 was $190 I think. 85s are pricey. But getting them
in manual focus really allowed me to get something good without spending like an idiot.

Invaluable resource for beginners, and all photographers.

That right there. Thanks, so what kind of DSLR, lighting situations, anything I should start reading, familiarize myself with?

If I was just starting out in DSLRs I would do one thing over and NOT do another thing, both of which I did
over the past 18 months. I had never owned a DSLR before Jan 2013. My thoughts were that super-
zoom bridge cameras were the best thing for me. But they are NOT. Their sensors are TINY. But DSLRs
are expensive. SO I did two things. I bought USED, which I highly recommend doing. The second thing I did
was the WRONG THING. I bought one of the cheapest, oldest Nikon DSLRs I could get, along with a couple
of used lenses. I bought a Nikon D70 and a Nikon D100. Both VERY CAPABLE CAMERAS, despite their age.
But once I started shooting, I realized I like to shoot in the dark, when the city is asleep and there are
fewer parked cars around. These old cameras can kick ass in the daylight, but struggle at night.
(without flash which I rarely use). So if I had to do it again, I would get the camera that best mixed
low price and night vision, so to speak. For me, that puts everything I am selling this month out of
consideration. I need to regularly shoot at 6400 ISO and get something out of it that I can sell. NOT EASY.

But for most people, they can EASILY get by and learn on yesterday's tech.
If I was in the market for
a DSLR today, with no needs to see in the dark, I would probably skip the D100, D70 and D40 and
select from D50 on up through about D7000. It would HAVE to have a built in focus drive motor, so all
cheap Nikons are out, D3000, 3100, 5000, 5200, 5300, D40....

I would feel VERY comfortable with a D50, very comfortable with a D80, extremely comfy with a D90,
and would love to have a D300. If you need Canon advice, I am not the one to ask.

As to lighting, there are cheap studio lights available for $30-$40, or you can just turn on all the lights,
haha. But I am in the TV business, so I always have some lights on hand. What I meant by improve
the light is to use anything BUT the camera's light or flash. If you have to take the lampshade off of
a lamp and put it on a shelf so that it lights directly and also bounces some light off the ceiling or a wall,
all the better. You want soft, reflected light to showcase your cigar subjects best. If you have to use
a camera's flash unit, I find a few sheets of bathroom tissue taped over the flash softens it up enough.

If you want a Nikon, let me know, I have several capable old models wrapped in bubble wrap and
stacked in a closet. I can supply a camera, starter lens, memory card, computer cables,
battery and charger, all for a nice low price. Or you can think about a Canon from someone here, or use
one of the three or four GOOD used camera sites online to select whatever you like.

I LIKE all the recent offerings in mirror-less compact cameras, but I would never personally go that route.
There is something completely perfect about a DSLR, the feeling of shooting, the look of the shots, the range of
lenses available. And even if mirror-less takes over the world, I can still get a much better price on extremely
capable used DSLR gear for a fraction of the cost of a good mirrorless camera.

I agree that when an ocean is involved, compact is better. But I do not have any REAL help in choosing,
other than to say that in REAL compacts, I like Canon. In superzooms, I RUN from Canon. In mirrorless/
ILCs, I like Sony or Fuji. I bought a used Nikon P6000 at Ado one day for $39. GREAT BUY for a slightly
beat up model. Works fine. But SONY is really the king of this segment, IMO. You can get a great compact
from any one of the majors. But they are all chasing Sony.

hey RON! I have a decent 300mm f/4.5 manual focus Nikkor you can hook up to your D90 with no trouble.
You'll have to focus it, and frankly, you'll have to guess metering and adjust with the LCD, but talk about REACH!

Sounds tempting, Brad! I'd have to brush up on my manual setting skills for exposure, unless I could still find an old fashioned hand held light meter somewhere. I always set the ISO at a determined number when I shoot rather than auto ISO, so that shouldn't be a problem. I notice that my older 210 mm does tend to always get set for a much too wide F-stop when I use it, so I just use aperture priority and boost the ISO a bit to get decent shutter speeds with low or no noise. Of course, I was looking at a Tamron that can go to 500mm, but for about 500 bucks (I think, I don't recall) that's still a big chunk of change. I'll let you know; I'm headed to GA next week for some much deserved vacation time. Jekyll Island, Savannah, and maybe Charleston if I feel like the 6 plus hour round trip.

I just finished the transition from a PC over to a MacBook Pro. Although I hate everything Apple, I must admit, I'm very much loving this laptop. I recently did a calibration of my Windows laptop, which made a world of difference on the color of my pictures on the screen and probably accounts for the dramatic changes I'd seen when uploaded to a website.....ie...facebook or flickr or my own site. When I calibrated the Mac, there was virtually no difference between the uncalibrated version. I hate to admit it, but I was dead wrong about the Apple products. While I'll never own one of their cell phones, I do respect and admire the laptops they produce. The dead on color of the retina display is truly amazing. Now...for more London photos, sorry but you guys will need to suffer through some more of these. :D

Ron, I just look at manual exposure the way you likely would. I sit down in the chair I use by the window where I shoot
the birds and stuff, I look at the general conditions, set my ISO about where I think it will want to be, then set my aperture
to give me a little room for errors in focusing, then pick a shutter speed and fire off a shot. My mental idea of what it SHOULD
be set up like is usually a half a stop off up or down. I either bump the ISO or see if I have any shutter speed left to bleed off.
It is a LOT more intuitive than you'd imagine. Especially since we are not shooting film. The focus ain't so bad either. The LCD
gets me right where I need to be on the setup.

Have a good time at the beach!

OK, this is a pretty cool place for me to share as a photo. This is the old Supreme court building in New Orleans, or a doorway of it anyway.
When I was a boy, this building also housed the LA Wildlife and Fisheries Museum, which was unbelievable for a kid. We would take field trips
here often, and the place was PACKED with stuffed wildlife in dioramas. Bears, coyotes, raccoons, snakes and snakes and snakes....
a couple of really nice aquariums as well. I know there was other stuff in there, natural history and geology and stuff, but there
is no competition for a young LA boy. This is another of those breaking dawn shots I get when the sun starts to bounce rays up
and over the horizon, and wherever I am in the Quarter at the time ends up getting the good light. Although we are fairly advanced
in that time here.......Snap Snap.

The weather officially sucked while I was down south! It was nice when I arrived, but it was already later in the day. Tuesday: all day downpour. Wednesday: clear, but pretty chilly with a steady 25 MPH wind. Thursday in Saint Augustine was perfect. Friday: ANOTHER all day downpour. Saturday: Cool, drizzly, and miserable all freaking day. Sunday: Better, not perfect but after the previous days it was fine. Monday (OF COURSE when I had to leave) SUNNY and WARM!! :sl Whatever pics I managed to get will follow shortly.

I dug up the ancestors of these Iris in the marsh ponds south of New Orleans while we were "fishing for TV" back in the late 80s.
Technically, they are the same plant, I guess. They were grown in St. Louis, MO, Concord, NC and now in the mountains of
western NC. OOps, NOT there.....in Memphis, INSTEAD of western NC. My mother couldn't or didn't want to move them and
deal with them up in the high elevations. I imagine I will dig one up for her, though, and take it to her when I visit soon.

This is one of my two favorite Nikkor manual focus lenses, an 85mm f/2. My real favorite of the two is the 105mm f/2.5.
Both of them create such wonderful photos. I think the 105mm can be had used these days for $150 or so, worth every
single penny, IMO. 85mms seem to demand an unfair (to me) premium and are tough to get under about $250. But the
F/2 seems to be a really good performer in a wide variety of light conditions, despite the "slow" f/2. Everyone seems to
want the 1.4 or 1.8, and they are surely fine lenses. I just mean I have never thought "if I only had the 1.4"

I ought to have some nice portraits next week, nothing racy (I don't think) when I shoot some promo shots for a young
and hungry country singer in town. Hard working young lady, but NOT WAY talented. But she writes and plays well enough,
and dogs don't cover their ears when she sings, so she will get there I hope. She mostly "sweets" her way into a crowd's
hearts, and the music works it's way into folks as the night goes on. But I really wanted the chance to shoot some stuff like
this for free just to show I can do it and to generate a little interest in a music-rich town. And most of these people just have
no money. If my hobby's product is the only thing holding them back from being noticed, I want to do something to make it
a cheaper and easier road for them. This is a learning hobby for me right now, but if I can make money for it one day when I am
too old to want to work, it sure will be a great help.

VERY sexy and sweet girls. One of the 'odd' things about them is that wherever they play a lot, they have 'uncles'
whom they stay with while they are in town, and in Memphis, that is my friend Mark. I got close to them over the last

I think I have given up on Adorama. A LOT of people have tried to warn me off of em from bad experiences, but most of mine
have been positive. But Passover knocked them for a loop. TO much weed or something. I got a used Canon lens from them
and it was not cheap, $399 in grade E, so no dust inside, hell two grades above lenses with visible dust inside. But it is littered
with large bits. As I use it a lot above f/8-f/11, these are spots I will end up having to paint out. if it had been graded G, or even V,
I would have had no complaints. But I paid for E and got G, so I am sending it back. It is almost 9 days since they got back
from Passover, having been gone for a week. And they are just not gettin after it. I was looking for a refund of at least $100,
and they want more pictures, dragging their feet, and giving up a customer that spent 9 grand on used and clearance material last year.
I hate it for em, but I hate it for me even more. Now I have to pay a premium on the same stuff at B&H. Pick any lens and
check both places for like used grades. You'll see 15%-20% more in price at B&H for the same used gear. SO as my dad used to say,
its gonna hurt me a lot more than its gonna hurt them. But after 20 months of faithful patronage, I am out. I am not suggesting
anyone not use them, I loved using them. But this is lame, slow and not worth my time. They were gonna slow drag right through
my 30 day return warranty. F that.

Bye Bye awesome lens. Well, not really, for $50 more during a Canon lens sale at B&H I just replaced it with new...100mm f/2 for
$50 more than I just paid used (and dusty) and free shipping to boot. I am sure Adorama has the same sale on, but bump that.

OLS
05-01-2014, 02:20 PM
Not sure how many of you are in line for a new lens for your Canon, hell I shouldn't be, I am a Nikon guy, but I just bought
a THRILLINGLY SHARP 100mm f/2 and got almost 70 bucks off of Lightroom. I did not want Lightroom, I have two versions of
Photoshop. But for RAW, I can't run these ole timey versions of photoshop and work with RAW easily if at all. Certainly for
nothing past the D70-D80. SO Lightroom seemed like a decent idea for $80.

SO now I have it, gotta get ready to hate it.

But there is a full field of Canon lenses "on sale" now with these coupla bonus software bundles on, just like Nikon did last month
or so. If you need it, might be time to think about it. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/promotion/10402/canon-lenses-speedlites-savings.html

I used to think vignetting was the coolest look, and I still do, but when I was emulating one of my big idols of the photonic arts (https://www.flickr.com/photos/jscherr/),
I saw him posting a LOT of great photos with some reasonably noticeable vignetting. SO I took MY PHOTOS that had none
and photoshopped it in. Now I realize for the most part, its just Canon lenses, some of them anyway. And it stands to
reason, since he was not really packing any serious lenses then. This was a lens I picked up to go with my Canon 5D, a cheap
zoom of 28-105 (3.5 max). And it vignettes on both ends, I think. But when I want to direct the viewer's attention to my
subject, it is FINE with me. NOW, if only I had paid closer attention to focus.

That's mostly because I do not handle my camera buying business here at the Asylum, I try to handle it with your company.
What I do HERE is tell people what happened to me when I tried to get my business taken care of but couldn't. You word
your statement as if I had not already tried and failed for 10 days (plus all of Passover) through the channels your company
has in place. There is no need to stalk me here with a search engine, sign up to the forum, and offer me what you should
be offering me on your own website once I alert you to the issue. A lot of people here would consider that 'reaching out"
to me and trying to resolve my issue. I tend to see it as too late to be of any help, and definitely in the wrong place.
And to be quite frank, YOU HAVE helped me. Your company has a no-questions asked 30 day return policy. If I can't get
my issues handled to my satisfaction, I can just send it all back.

Not all; it sounds from your feedback that WE failed you - and I'd like to see whether there is anything I can do to make it right.

My role at Adorama is only online customer support to Adorama customers via photography forums, shopping sites, Flickr groups etc. We can't monitor what each one of our CS Call Center Team members is doing 100% of the time and recognize that occasionally mistakes will happen.

If you need me to step in, well, you know where I am.

Your call center didn't make any errors. You have a fair return policy in place that I was forced to use.
This would be less likely to occur if people who have been off for over a week understand that when they
get back to work, its time to get serious and clear the decks.

OLS

I also want to re-iterate my original statement which has not changed. I am not trying to tell anyone that this
company is not fit to take your money. If you are shopping USED price, you are going to end up there, they are
simply the cheapest around on used. And if you want to give them the full benefit of the doubt, they are a VERY
large company. Eventually you are going to feel let down if you spend enough money and handle enough used
gear through them. This does not make them a bad choice for you. I am talking about ME, and what I am willing
to tolerate. I dealt with em for 2 years, more or less, and on the whole, feel like it was a good relationship. This ending
with me is over a bunch of subtle clues that things are changing and it is no longer advantageous for me to shop
with em.

No ma'am, my sincere apologies, but this was sorted out when I shipped the package back to New Jersey. Not to my
liking obviously, I didn't want to send it back. I wanted to shoot with it. But unless someone has expressed to me
in writing that I would be allowed to return it for a refund AFTER they 30 days granted me by your policy, and in spite
of however long it took to resolve the issue, I would have waited this process out. But no one made any such assurances.
SO it had to go back before the time expired. I DO have an assurance that I will be refunded in full for the lens.
If that ends up being the case, I will certainly make sure to mention it here so that you can have closure.

OLS
05-05-2014, 04:11 PM
And as I have stated dozens of times here before, although it is similar to all the big players in the type and duration of
it's return policy, I have never had an issue returning an item to Adorama, exactly as they state, "with no questions asked."
This extra business aired in the open here is related to the reason the lens is headed back home. Not to what I think my
chances are of being refunded.

In my ever increasing desire to further my 'hobby'. I did a ton of research looking for a printer. I have no print shop remotely close to me and the 'photoshops' have no real options in paper. While yes, I am a Canon whore I did not limit my research to just their printers. However, as expected, I did settle on the Pixma Pro-10. It has the B&W capabilities that I wanted and excellent color output. Doesn't hurt that they also lured me in with $300 of fine art paper. Which has the feel of poster board and not photo paper....haha.

they get you, but ink is what makes the photos, so you are going to have to suck it up and just buy ink if you want to
complete the cycle. And boy does that one like ink, shazaam. But the prints it creates are stunning.
A lot of us have a new mentality born of 10-15 years of digital photography, and surfing the internet, we tend to just
amass pictures in massive folders, and printing is something we'd like to do eventually, when we get stuff we REALLY
want to print. But we never really get around to it. These printers are very solid. And paper is a slippery slope, too, haha.

A couple of novel papers I like to tinker with are the metallic glossys and the vinyl or semi-gloss sticker paper. Ask any
kid...stickers are fun.

I read the same thing about ink usage. A lot of the info said it depends on what type of paper you're using, how often you print and a few other factors. Most of the 'pro' reviewers seemed to think it was in line with other quality printers as far as ink usage. The Pro-1 is better, but it's also $400 more and by 'better' I think it's because it has much larger ink tanks and you get a better price per ml. The Pro-10 has 14ml cartridges which works out to less than a $1 per ml. Which is less than half the cost of our HP Photostylus printer.

I wanted to take a moment to, not RETRACT things I said that got the Ador-ama rep in here, but to make sure that a
resolution of my issue gets in print where you all can read it. I got frustrated with the long time it took to evaluate my
"claim" that the lens I ordered had a condition issue that placed it well below the grade of lens I paid for. There was simply
a large field of large dust on many of the inner surfaces of the lens. Lots of lenses I own and you own have dust inside.
But I paid for a grade with no such 'feature'. lol. But the folks there were off a solid week for Passover, and then about
8-9 days after they got back, I still did not know if they were even considering a reduction offer I proposed.
So while I was NOT concerned that I would be ignored, I WAS concerned that their fair-as-heck 30 day no hassle return policy
would expire on me while I waited. Normally this could never be. But this was not normal. They had been gone 7-8 days on a holiday, and I figured by the time they got around to me, fair or not, they might say
"Sorry, your 30 days are up. I mean, you gotta draw the line somewhere. For $400, I couldn't risk it.

But a rep from the company signed up to the Asylum and asked me to please email her so that she could help me.
Code for "for goodness sake, shut up and let me help you." , haha. But on a parallel track, I was also getting help
from another major C.S. rep. Bottom line is they offered me VERY close to my original idea of what I'd hoped they
might offer as a reduction for the dust condition. And my offer was, as you might expect, High to my benefit.
SO I was fairy impressed with the counter-offer. Keep in mind this was a used lens, but a pricey one to be sure.
Prior to that offer, however, I had sent the lens back with return paperwork. I had to apologize and thank him,
but he confirmed that I would be given full value for the return as well, so either way, he hoped I was satisfied and I was.

I also need to REALLY apologize for mentioning even in ultra-jest, that they had smoked too much weed on vacation.
Obviously this was out of line, but never mentioned by either of them. Reckless of me.

So while I may have drawn their consternation of telling you all that I was seriously considering not be shopping
there anymore, I certainly went out of my way to be clear THEN that I did not think that anyone else should stop using them.
The product is always great, and when it it does not meet your expectations, you have the great return options with no hassle.
Those who know me from this thread also know that this did not even mean that I WAS NOT happy necessarily, because
I've spent 7-8000 dollars there in less than two years, almost none of it on new gear. Whether they know it or not,
I am the lifeblood of the used department. So ignore what I said, and know that I was made whole on my issue. I also
know what I can do myself to keep that kind of thing from occurring again. Will I shop there again? I have three places
where I shop cameras, so there is no telling. But there is no reason why not. Plus I think I have one of everything NOW.

Let's just say we'll see.

By the way, I was kidding when I said I was the lifeblood of the used department, I just forgot to put in the smiley face.
I have always loved that place, this was just a calendar issue.

While we are on the subject of buying cameras and other gear used from various online merchants, I also need
to go on record as being not so sure anymore about Nikon being the best thing for me. And by that I mean that I will
always be a Nikon shooter, that's just how it shook out. I am heavily invested and very happy. But then came the day
that I just had to test out ole Ken Rockwell's impression that the Canon 5D was the perfect portrait and landscape
camera. I can't really speak to the landscape issue, but I was pretty shocked that I would be some impressed with
the results of shooting this camera. Granted, it is an investment that is tough to swallow, but hear me out. I know a few
of you who are shooting Nikon now, but also wanting a full frame camera now. SO let's say for argument that you are FULLY
intent on picking up a full-frame Nikon this year, used, and had decided between a D700 or a D600, just to keep it reasonable.
Do you realize that you can pay $1400 or more for a good D700, $12-1300 for a fair one, and a used D600 is going to ride about
the same level, just $2-400 more. So in order to stay Nikon (so you can use all your lenses) you would pay no less than $1400
for a Full frame camera.

But right now, today, you can go to Ado and get a Canon 5D, original version, TWO YEARS older then the D700,
for $499, and then pick up one, maybe TWO SWEET fast Canon prime lenses and come out below the cost for just
the Nikon full framer BODY you chose to go with? ALL of the full frame goodness, lush, brilliant color, eye-popping
lens quality, even without paying the "L-series" lens money. Your choice of the Canon 85mm f/1.8 or the 100mm f/2
would be fine as your only lens ever, if you didn't want to lay out so much cash. This 100mm f/2 is optically stunning
for it not being considered a high end Canon lens (even though it is in terms of results). You would never even have to
give up Nikon to go full frame. You can keep your Nikon stuff and still have the entire full frame experience for less than
the price of just the Nikon body....wow. That is just uncanny to me, and it made me happy. I am in no danger of a
Canon slope, but the logic of the premise really had me giddy. SO I sold about 6 old Nikons and picked up a 5D and a $50
lens and a $400 lens. I think a few people here might also think that is a good idea. Even if I came up with it, lol.
