Not too sharp at all, but the pose was great. I had to shoot over a bunch of wild kids, and it was almost a
reflex popping off a shot, since I saw the Orang Utan was swinging wildly...I was kinda running by.

Oops, I forgot to share that last tiger photo....I called this tiger melanistic, that was wrong.
I think it is even wrong to call it a cross-bred Bengal Tiger. This is just a recessive trait
from what I gather. This tiger is this color for the same reason that the White Tiger is white.
Not Albinism, just an expression of a recessive gene. This is what the zoo calls "strawberry colored".
We of course know that this is called a Ginger Tiger, lol.

http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b611/CameraTestsPage/OLS_0050sml_zps2b63bb43.jpg (http://s1294.photobucket.com/user/CameraTestsPage/media/OLS_0050sml_zps2b63bb43.jpg.html)

While I am on that subject, too, remember I said EVERY TIME the regular bengal tiger passed the
strawberry tiger, it caused a turf war response. They can be in the same enclosure, but the
Ginger Tiger takes offense when the other Bengal comes within a pre-defined space, and man,
does she flare back and roar....Here you see this in action. For what its worth, the regular Bengal
makes absolutely no sign that he even notices, but he doesn't LOOK at her either.

So I guess there is no longer any question that it was the camera all this time holding you back.
I bet you about 5hit yourself when you got home and saw the photos. Since you are not a Brad, and you don't
talk much about buying new this or that, I am guessing that is the 18-55mm? I never thought that much
about those lenses til I strapped it onto that D90. Turns out it can be razor sharp. And the D90 is a color master.
I am HIGHLY impressed by your color, clarity and crispness. The gauntlet has been thrown down, lol.

I will offer one bit of advice to you, although from what I see, you might not need it.
If you could pick up a $15 neutral density filter, you could use the shutter speeds you
want for waterfalls and still keep a nice healthy aperture opening, likely something approaching
f/11 or even f/8. Lenses stopped down towards the very end of their range tend to have greatly
reduced sharpness and detail due to diffraction. But again, your shots look nice as is.

OLS
07-08-2013, 07:16 PM
Those 18-55s are a REAL surprise to me. I really thought they would be utter crap,
and when I pay attention, I am just so surprised by the acuity they have. They
really pass on the color to the sensor. half a billion years, huh? So about as old as
my johnson.

OLS

I wanted to post this photo just to show how much it sucks when you don't pay attention.
When I get to the zoo, I bolt for the Lions and if they are out, I just start shooting away.
They are SO DAMN photogenic. Same in N.O., I get there and I am so excited to begin
shooting that I always screw something up, leave a setting tweaked wrong, forget to set
auto-focus, I do something EVERY TIME the shot is on the line. I set up the D90 with a
70-300mm lens, a slow one, and started shooting away with it. I didn't check the histogram
on the first shot, I barely even reviewed the results and adjusted from there. It is my best
camera, why would I think it would shoot poorly? So I shot on this all day, not knowing
that I should have dialed in -.07 in exposure compensation. All my shots were washed out
to some degree. So I had to FIX this shot, and still barely escaped with anything I would
want to show somebody. But the subject matter, this was great. You have to hang
around this enclosure for hours to see this bear do this. But I sensed he was gonna do it.
He usually does soon after he sits down on his butt and holds his feet, which he did a few
minutes prior to this shot. I am getting to know these animals so well, lol.

For Hugh, and for them what cares, here are some shots I took from the Wilber's Bar-B-Que parking lot at the
end of the runway back in what was likely 1981. I was stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB, and while I was often
at the end of the runway running checks of systems prior to takeoff, there were no cameras allowed there.
So if I was shooting these shots, it was at Wilber's. Just a note to anyone travelling along the interiors of NC
and you are looking for great BBQ, albeit NC style, check out Wilber's GREAT FOOD.

I never will forget the day I was walking in to eat, a F-14 flew over to land, and I had had up to
that point, NO IDEA how large that aircraft was, I thought it was like a F-4 or similar. That sucker
had to be at least twice the size of a F4. I was stunned.

I had an old "Sears" SLR camera made by Mamiya, and likely the slowest lens you could get, lol. It had the
now rare to find screw mount. SORRY to all about the color and contrast...shooting into the
sun never looks good.

Likely just back from the Dare County Range out near the Atlantic, you can tell its landing
because of the drogue chute.

This made me laugh....I walked up on the wolves and they were howling up a storm, and even after the alpha saw me,
he kept on with it, but he was RIGHT NEXT TO a fence, and the shot was crap. So I walked around to shoot the
other wolves howling, but once they saw me it was over in an instant. And also, once they stopped howling,
pecking order immediately took over again, and this wolf was run off by a higher-ranking wolf. i like how he is not
only running away, but sticking out his tongue, haha.

This is the saddest part of the lives of my new best friends at the Memphis Zoo. They have a really
cool area to hang out in, but it is NOT what they would like best. Sure there are tunnels, and yes there
is sand spread over the top of it, but concrete tunnels lead to scraped up noses, and I hate it for em.

WOW, I like those, and as Ken Rockwell says, 'my work is all about color, "lol.

A moment of silence please on the death of a good friend today.

I picked up a third D200 two weeks ago at Ado, I keep a spare of all my favorite cameras,
at least the ones that are capable of full matrix metering on manual focus lenses,
since I have become heavily invested in them. But since I had a spare, this one
was going to my nephew...too good a deal to pass up.

Turns out when I got it and took a pic and checked the EXIF data, it had 105,000
shutter actuations. I thought the D200 was rated for 150k, so I was not worried
about 105k, outside of the general disappointment of getting such a nag, cheap or not.

SO I took it to work today to test some things and it crapped out. Last night it had
stopped reporting the proper aperture, I could turn the wheel all day and it stayed at
the max ap on the readout. Today I took it out to shoot an old El Camino out back and
it started having shutter errors. In a bit of a panic, I ran in to check the invoice, and
for ONCE in my life, I had two weeks to go til I would be out of luck on the return.
But ADO is nothing if not solid on returns, so I will get my $100 back and they will get
their camera back. My nephew....well he's a little bummed. I had told him it had 105k
but that it could crap out in a week or just as easily live longer than him with luck and care.
Turns out Nikon was just about dead on. SOMEONE took it 5000 clicks over, and I put
about 2-300 on it myself in testing pre-gift. I was hoping for option B, obviously.

Picked up another good, cheap lens this week. $25...Gonna give it to my sister.
Nikon Series E 70-210mm f/4. it is a constant aperture lens, cheap used,
but cheap in it's day as well, in case you don't know the E-Series story.
But it has great bokeh, decently super sharp for a hand held, MF lens.
Even though this one has some visible dust inside, on a blue field it is not that bad.
She won't see it 95% of the time she uses it. BUT YOU WILL.....

All hand held at the long end....f/8, base ISO

And sadly, one of the main reasons for the low price.....DUST...and not just dust.....BUNNIES.

I was gonna take it apart, I got a Sigma 70-300 back together and it worked, but
I don't think I got it PERFECT, as now it is a bit soft. So this one just has to have a bunny
farm.

I had another great opportunity tonight on my Greenway walk. i decided to take some more shots with the
70-210 Series E Nikon lens since soon it will be in someone else's hands and I like to thoroughly check
something like that out Before I let it go. Maybe I want to keep it, eh? But no, in this case it is certainly going
to be given away, but as you will see, I was sure glad I had it tonight.

When you walk up on a bird and think "OH man, let me stop dead and see if I can get a shot off.
nah, they always fly away. Well tonight I got a break. i walked up on a Mourning Dove and she didn't fly.

man when I look at those photos above, I can't believe how I let the focus point get away from me.
The fiddle one was just an error, you can SEE the focus point clearly on the fiddle. The singer
that was just me being stupid. BLAZING sunlight and I bet I was near wide open in aperture.
Yep, I checked it and it was f/5, so at that zoom level, that was wide open. I continue to do the
same things again and again, too 'busy' to stop and think about how I am set up. In the film days,
there would be none of that. You were throwing away money for shooting stupid. On a day like Saturday,
I should have been at f/11. I guess I wanted some dramatically shallow DOF since the singer was excited
that a photographer was coming to shoot the party, lol. I wonder if he ever showed up, lolol.

In my defense, the 35-135 can be a little soft, it was hand held, and I was screwing up the settings.
but again, the camera was allowed to find it's own favorite point of high contrast to focus on, in that
case, the MIC and her MOUTH. And I can't necessarily holler, the D70 only has 5 focus points, and
I USED the right one. I just needed to be in f/8 or f/11.

Since Justin died, I guess I have to carry on around here. Pulled out the oldest DSLR I have, my old D100.
I wanted to test some lenses while I walked, and thought it would be best to go ahead and pull out some of
the oldies to have a variety of pics from all the bodies. I find it ironic that this old camera takes such a great
photo, and the D70 with a 'similar' lens could cough up such crap. In it's defense, the 70-210 is a better lens
than the 35-135, but not by much. They are almost identical in period. And the D70 is not a whole lot older
than a D100. The Nikkor 35-135 AF (shots above) is not all that different from the Nikkor 70-210 AF, which
was what shot this Day Lily today. That said, I find the 70-210mm 4-5.6 to be an excellent lens. It is thirsty
for light, but if you give it what it wants, it will reward you. But stop paying attention to your surroundings and
how they will affect your settings, you can have the best lenses there are, and you can get crap.

And in my defense, when I put on better glasses, the pics are not that bad, lol. but still TOO much light
to be wide open.

When you think about it, its not a surprise. Once you focus on clouds, you are pretty much at infinity.
Same for flying planes, birds, ships, etc. They are also mostly immune from the localized haze you get
when you focus on a ship or something on the same plane as you. The lens can work better on clouds
than a ship or a far away building. That and you bought the best damn Nikon under $500.

Once again, everything old is definitely new again. Thankfully prices on all these old lenses have gone down,
I think there was a real rush when the D700 came out, and maybe when the D200 came out before it, to buy
up a lot of manual focus lenses that could stand in for the $1000-$2000 lenses that Nikon was selling to go
with their new FX cameras. The real stars are still priced pretty high, but it would seem that there are a lot of
hidden stars that people have already forgotten about or satiated themselves on, with everyone who wanted one
already having one. I have been very lucky, in my crazy desire to read everything I can about some of this stuff,
to have found a few real dandys for a crazy low price, at least in terms of the quality for the money.

The Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 AI was one, man what a great lens....not cheap, but for $99, I really think the images
are worth it.

The Nikkor 180mm f/2.8 ED AIS was CERTAINLY one, although I think I paid $184 for that one, so it was no 'bargain'.
My favorite lens so far in life. I'd say that $184 for the best lens you own is a good trade.

The one I am on and on about today is this Nikkor 200mm f/4 AI. I have had it for a month or better, and haven't put
it on a camera yet. I thought maybe the good times might end. Boy was I wrong. This is a KILLER LENS. Not sure yet
until I go to the zoo what I REALLY have on my hands, but the pics from my walk tonight seem to indicate it will give the
180mm a run for it's money. As ever, hand-held in fading early evening light. One thing I wanted to do but really couldn't,
was to shoot at f/8. But I at least stopped down to 5.6. These pics showed me good things.....sorry, the usual subject matter.
My hand-holding kind of softened them up a bit, for this is certainly a LONG lens, but the color and contrast are really
impressive to me. As similar as these look from the 70-210 stuff from yesterday, these are all new pics today. Not a whole
lot of variety on my walk....I like color.

With this lens, I see insects where others see only flowers...

Well, what a night. I regret only one thing, that I didn't stay longer. I try to get to bed
by 9:00pm on weeknights where work is looming the next day, and the nights are so long

atmosphere were right before I left and the sky was dark and the little light strings were
beginning to overtake the ambient light. SUCKS I did that, but a free gig, ehh, I am gonna

Not sure Elements features the editing function "Curves"
In Photoshop, it is IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>CURVES, and then that gives you
a box with kind of a bendy 'wire' kind of tool, that you grab by various points
and it establishes little keyframes that you can move up or down to add
various degrees of color and balance effects to your open photo, then save it.
I will go home and post some screen grabs tonight to show you better.

What it does basically is take the photo and enhances or reduces various
attributes to make the photo more or less attractive. It takes a straight
line and allows you to make bezier curves in it....the straight line basically
represents your picture in it's current form. You use the curves to make
smooth changes to lightness, contrast, color, etc.

I know you all hate to hear this all the time, but I did it again....
I bought some more dregs from Ado. They threw up a metric TON of cameras today in the used sections.

There was one, a D200 that said "ISO and WB buttons do not work"....It was $150.
I can set those in the Menu, and don't REALLY change them a lot when I am shooting.
Just a GREAT OLD CAMERA that works with all the manual focus lenses, and I have a bunch.
In EX+ condition, it is basically 65% off for something I don't even care about.

I picked up a D90 for $200 that said "Flash will not stay down". Geez, half price for something
I can place a tiny strip of gaffer's tape on and have a camera THAT GOOD?
I almost never use a flash, and when I DO, I can just pull the tape tab. I much prefer
to use the ISO to help my shutter speed in low light, or fast lenses. Also in Excellent
condition, so that one is at least 50% off, and it's a killer camera.

And for $50, I got another D200 that said "front and rear command dials not working properly"......
Now that one is gonna be a problem, lol. But I tend to have great luck
with things I purchase there, so I figure it can be A.) a spare for parts, B.) a camera
that only shoots in one mode, whatever mode its IN, lol, or C.) It will work SOME of
the time and just give me a little trouble in the field, which I should be able to work
around. For $50, I can GUARANTEE that I will be able to use it to take pics. I am
guessing in rainy conditions, super-dusty and dirty conditions, or high crime areas.
They are VERY well sealed. And you can swing one and KILL a man, and if you don't
kill him and he takes your camera, ehh, it was $50. I know they are old, but they
WORK SO WELL and are SO DAMN versatile. And if all I get from it is a shutter mechanism,
I am fine with that. The large, bright viewfinder ALONE is worth having 4 D200s, haha.
I have old man eyes. But I will give at least one away to friends and family.

Basically now, though, I have to stop. I have stockpiled these cameras not because
I am a TOTAL idiot, but something more along the lines of genius. I KNOW that I do not
care if I EVER have a camera over 12 MP. Nikon has had Japanese law dictate that they
cannot use open contact batteries anymore, so after about the D300, all of their batteries
have been changed over. I can run D100, D50, D70, D90, D200 and D700 all off the same
batteries. I have all the cameras in that list, and a good stock of batteries for them, after
getting one with each camera buy, lol. So I have a fortress of bodies protecting me from
too much progress in the digital age. I KNOW there are people who can use and actually
WANT a 24MP or 36MP camera....but that ain't me.

Not just the sun, that structure is notoriously difficult to get a good shot of.
You would think it wouldn't have a bad angle, but when I was there, it seemed
they were ALL bad. That one you have with the whole arch in it looks great,
excellent atmospheric conditions, great sun, great color.

I'm not a photog by any means, but is there a shutter speed fast enough to capture those wings? I've seen it done with hummingbirds, but I believe bees wing beats are even faster.

OLS
08-05-2013, 04:15 PM
Of course there is a shutter speed that can do it, the problem is, usually when you are zoomed in, your lens may
have a variable aperture that can be pretty limiting in that regard. Add to that that people often use glass filters to
protect their lenses that can cut you down another half a stop. By the time you combine all the issues, you often
have no access to those shutter speeds. The best you can do is shoot these shots at a time of day when there is the most
light, and of course, have steady hands. You are gonna have to get up there past 1000, maybe as high as 1600, then you
might have a shot. If your camera can take it, you can pump the ISO up to 1250 or higher, and you can likely get
pretty close to the levels you need. With the I-PHONE.....nah, not likely. From the above shot, those look like
box turtles....in hand it looks like some kind of terrapin. Wish I was good on northern turtle species. PM sent.

I agree with Brad, the IPhone wouldn't do it. I was surprised to see it did catch them a bit. Had I actually focused on the bee and not the flower, it might've caught them more. I need to break out my D70 to see if I can get a better shot.

Is it the last one?? I certainly hope so....I know Capitol one doesn't.
There was a D50 at Ado the other day, $50....it said "Memory card will
not lock in place." I figured the spring mechanism was broken, and I could
put a little tail of tape on the card to have something to extract the SD card
with. Well, it came in, and THEY were right, as they sometimes are, about the
defect. THE SPRING was fine, in fact I could bounce the card in and out, doing,
doing, doing.....but it wouldn't lock.

SO I closed the memory card door on it to force it to the bottom of the channel,
but it wouldn't read the card. I started to sweat a bit, I did not feel like retuning
this thing for $50, it will be 1/3 of that just in postage....Then I rolled a piece of
duct tape into a tube and laid it on the top edge of the card, and closed the card
door, and it read the card and it stayed read. Took it to lunch, shot it up real good
and it is still reading the card. I imagine in time the tape will conform and it may stop
reading it, but tape is cheap, and SO was this little camera. I ordered a $25 dollar
lens for it, so for $75 I have a nice small, entry-level Nikon.

Anybody want to buy a small, entry-level Nikon? :r

Best thing is there is not one of them that I paid anywhere near the perceived value for,
except for the last D90 which I bought for my sister in a rush before I saw her, still paid
$100 less than going rate. And thanks to Shark, who traded his abandoned D100 for cigars.

So how is that D100 working for you? Pics still coming out bluish without tweaking anything? I knew how to do it, I just didn't like that, and the fact that the metering was all over the place, at least for me. I'm very picky, as I've said before!

Missed out on some shots of three hawks flying overhead at work. I was outside and saw them, right overhead beginning to ride the thermal currents, so I ran to my car and got my camera, but they got up there pretty high really quick! I need a longer telephoto. I'm sure my coworkers were wondering WTF, because I was in plain view of the windows.... :D

I have yet to even take a series of photos with that camera. It is in a bag of potpourri right now,
trying to knock out the smoke that is embedded deep in the rubber and electronics. You must
smoke an awful lot of cigars and cigarettes inside, I guess it having been winter and all.

I guess. But damn, it is better in a lot of ways than even my brand now out of the box one.

While cleaning out the back office/bedroom/storage warehouse this weekend, I found my old Domke Photo Journalist's vest. It is the older style, in barely used condition. I think I only used it a handful of times at best.

These are webshots of a similar vest, if anyone is interested PM me and I will get pictures of the actual vest and send them.

LOL!! They mentioned that in fact. And they did that song, too. I was lucky I guess, because supposedly people with good cameras were only supposed to shoot during the first three songs. Security didn't seem to care, but the band probably did because security started going after people with the more sophisticated cameras unless they had press credentials

Something to consider: They do have kitty wheelchairs. He might adapt quite well to one being so young. My dog lost use of her hind legs and we got her one and she used it quite a bit. I doubt it would be too expensive, and worth talking to your vet about.

MrClean

This shot was three trips in the making...Woke up early on Saturday THINKING I had a route to the river across from Memphis....
I was wrong. I drive around Arkansas for an hour trying to find a way past the sloughs and willow groves and all kinds of
dirt roads to no avail, even with having checked Guugle space maps. Then on the way out of the state, I took a chance
on a road that led me to the base of the three bridges downriver of Memphis. I was too late for even the sunrise, but I had
FOUND the spot. I went back that night and shot some night shots, and it was a STRUGGLE. Thank goodness for the
moon. There is nothing between where i park and where I have to shoot but 1/8 mile of loose rock revetment around the
supports on the river. RISKY in the dak, hell, risky in the day. I nearly slid into the river twice as the rocks shifted and gave
way, not to mention dropping two cameras. but somehow I kept it all together. But the shots did NOT impress me. So I got
up earlier this morning and drive right to it and decided NOT to risk the rocks again, since i did not feel the need to get the
Desoto Bridge in the shot. Here are the three bridged just downriver from Memphis from this morning, just a few hours ago.
Odd hwo the FLOW is the same, but the water last night was as turbulent as usual, and this morning it was GLASS, except
for a ton of fish swirls, they were feeding on top this morning. Wish I had brought a pole and some worms.

Nikon D200, Nikkor 85mm f/2
This is why you ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS set up your camera before you shoot. If a fighter jet flies over and
you pop your camera on and up to shoot a quick shot, OK, do what you have to. But when you intend to fill your
memory card with 450 shots of the same thing, NEVER EVER leave your camera settings from the night before.
I was shooting a musician in a downstairs, dimly lit club in downtown Memphis, and had the ISO cranked to 1600,
which is EASILY twice what the D200 can handle without a lot of noise. But I had to do it or miss all the shots,
which i barely escaped with anyway. 10-20% success rate under those conditions. But I got ENOUGH to save it.
But then the next day, I was shooting in broad daylight, and I LEFT THE DAMN CAMERA set to 1600 ISO. I had a
super-choice Nikkor 85mm f/2 cranked onto it, which is a bokeh masterpiece, and delivers the sweetest portraits
you can imagine. Well, unless of course, you leave you camera crippled for the whole day. This is a great shot,
but look close.....just wrecked by noise. Of course, if you look TOO CLOSE, you won't CARE about the noise.

This next shot was the saving grace....I NEVER shoot anything good without a second camera.
I had a D90 with a 50mm 1.8 on it, and I shot a large pile of pics of this gorgeous lil monkey
with it, so while the best SHOTS are ruined by noise, the DAY was saved by the humble D90
and 50mm lens. See below. And see more of her here (https://www.facebook.com/art.photos.33)

YES, but short of carrying TWO D90s (which I can do, lol) you can't worry about IQ. Especially when
your D200 will mount any AI, AIS, AF, AF-D and AF-G lens in the bag, AND METER with them.
When I pull out a 1970s 85mm lens and start shooting away, the D200 has no reason to hang it's head in
shame, because the better images are coming from the D200 oftentimes. I just screwed up leaving my
ISO about pegged. MANYS the time I have come in here and told you and others about how I failed
to clear my head at the beginning of a shoot. HELL, my first 200 D90/50mm1.8 images were
WHITE, because I accidentally and inexplicably bump-moved the mode dial from A-priority to M and
wasn't checking in on the LCD often enough. Luckily her set was only half over, but I got some
STUNNING shots of this hot lil monkey and they were ALL blown out white. I finally chimped the pics
and saw what I had done and set everything up right. And I had lots of time to re-cap a lot of that
stuff. Sadly though, everything looked normal on the D200 LCD and I didn't see my huge error or even
think about it til I got home. I threw some Photoshop noise reduction on it, busted it with some curves,
and am not angry about it anymore. But I was furious Satuday night.

Here is one of the shots I was set up for that caused me to have my camera all wacked out on High ISO settings the next day.
Not the camera's fault obviously, and hopefully I have learned my lesson. But this room was darker to me than it looks here.
And I threw a ton of 'curve' on this one to brighten it up, plus noise reduction, and it still sucks, outside of the fact that
there is no blur from slow shutter speeds which makes me happy. And even then this shot is only ISO 1000 on a camera that in
it's normal range will go to 1600. It sucks past 800, but that's another story. I still love the D200, but this is NOT the place for it.

I wanted to add, Justin, that while you are RIGHT as rain, ironically in low light conditions, the D90
is ALMOST as bad as the D200. It starts getting REALLY squirrelly in High ISO situations, blasting
out color blooms and just pouring on the saturation. It seems to freak itself out. So in normal to lower
light conditions, it is fine, but you put it in a dim basement music stage sitcho, and neither camera is
really up to the task, if you intend to show your photos to anyone. The D90 looks a lot better at ISO1000
than the D200, but when it gets to 1600, it is beginning to come apart. Which in a way it should, that is
it's ceiling basically. But there is IQ and there is IQ. At 1250-1600, the D200 is still giving you the same
photo, just noisier. That is not the case with the D90. But now that I KNOW this, I can turn the color
settings to totally neutral next time I try to shoot D90 in low light.

Yeah, but I don't want to waste it, lol. It has 72,000 shots on it. I only pull it out when I know I have to have it. BUT once I had finished shooting at that basement venue, I realized that THAT was one of the times I was saving the D700 for. Ron, I hear you on the fact that I am only halfway to death on that D700, but I am not in a hurry to spend
another 1200 bucks on a camera, so I only use it when I absolutely need it. What I DO need to do is start
CARRYING it to places where I am not familiar with the lighting just in case. In fact I was just telling someone
in New Orleans on Flickr that I am a fool if I don't take it this time, owing to the fact that I always shoot from
about 3am to sunrise in the French Quarter. I end up throwing away over half the shots cause they are bleary
and smeary. The D700 would tighten that up significantly. I never cared about losing so many shots, I shoot
many shots of the same thing by reflex and experience, but that's before I had my D700.
