Just picked up a Nikon D300s last week, still haven't had time to play around with it enough to begin to get my settings the way I want them but it seems like an interesting. Should be a nice addition to my D7000 for sports shooting :D

You might like the D7000 better for sports, unless it sucks at that. Well, I imagine the D300s does a lot of
things faster, or did. I know the D200, D300 and D700 are really nice-feeling cameras in the hand.
And I have a D7000, and I would STILL like to have even a D300 just to shoot with and maybe keep.
Whether it was S or not.
Shot a festival over the weekend and for a change, got the outdoor light advantage. Its scary how
often I do not shoot in daylight. I am pretty sure these 3 are all Nikkor 180mm f/2.8 ED manual-
focus lens shots.

The cat playing bass was TALL....The 24mm Nikkor 2.8 AI exaggerates the features top and bottom, but all they do
is get the full HEIGHT in. So yep, he's that tall.

The deeper buffer is going to be very helpful with burst shots which is probably 80% of my bike racing shooting. The extra FPS isn't too shabby either. The 7000 will be much better for low light but I think I can pull it off with either one with the right lens

If I had it to do over, I might have oeted for the D300s instead of the D7000, but I had been lusting after a newer
crop body that could hang in the dark where a camera I use has to be comfy. But the brutal speed of those heavy
Nikons is tough to beat, especially when they pair that wicked autofocus with the burst rate. First time you ever
shoot with one you notice it immediately and you never want to go back. I guess my impression, having never shot
a D300 or an S, is that it is a crop-body D700 for all intents and purposes. No matter how many cameras I shoot with,
the D700 just keeps on proving out as the better machine. I do like the D600, but I try not to shoot with it much.
Only when I need the resolution, I guess.

The dangers of the acquisition impulse.
As you know if you are always in this thread, going back years, I have a case of the I-wants something fierce for
Nikon camera gear. But I have champagne tastes and a beer budget, so I made sure to always buy a camera body that
had a motor inside of it so I could buy old lenses for less money and try my best to get the best acuity and quality and
QUALITIES I could get. The same qualities I could get in "L Glass" in the Canon parlance' or just "the expensive
5hit" is what its called in Nikon I guess. You LOSE coating advancements and corrective optics, in the newest sense of the
word anyway. but in some cases, like the Nikkor 180mm f/2.8 ED AI manual focus lens, you have a HUGE ED glass
element right up front and its a reasonably-priced, older design. But blabalbla, I have legendary lenses like the Nikkor
105mm f/2.5 AI-s, and the 85mm f/2 and the 180 above and several other monster lenses. I researched endlessly
and BOUGHT everything I wanted, and kept it or sold it based on how it fit into what I thought I needed. But I guess
I grew impatient in a way, I wanted to keep SHOPPING for stuff and playing with it. But the only thing left to really
explore were the really old, pre-AI, Nippon Kogaku, moon-rocket-era lenses that were perfectly good for the time,
but can damage most modern digital Nikons. Advances and improvements to it's legendary F-mount have PUT THINGS IN
THE WAY that can get torn out by snapping on one of these old lenses.
And here is where the story finally gets going....haha, sorry. I ACTUALLY found myself justifying, today, upgrading my
Nikon D40, which can accept ALL THE F-mount lenses every made without damaging anything, to a Nikon D3200 or D5100,
so that not only could I go back and use all of these OLD classic lenses, but I could do it in high enough resolution to make it
worth DOING AT ALL, since I try to make a living shooting print-worthy photos that I can sell. I HAVE all these other lenses
in their "MODERN" manual focus equivalents, and some are even duplicated in auto-focus primes as well. On top of that
I have high resolution bodies that accept ALL of my lenses. And I HAVE THE NERVE to even CONTEMPLATE spending
MORE MONEY on a new "cheap" body (either one of which will also accept any F-mounte lens without damage) so that
I can spend EVEN MORE MONEY on "dangerous" (lol) lenses I already have better copies of to use on my excellent range
of bodies.
WHAT THE _ _ _ _ ? Thank goodness at the end of every day, I kind of just dump all of it out and keep the plastic in
my pants. Ironic how all of the things that can take all your money and leave you broke all start because you couldn't
keep things safely there?
But all that said, I was shooting a girl the other day singing at a festival, and I caught her in profile, and I was shooting
with I THINK a 105mm f/2.5, and I swear it looked like an old Playboy shot. And its the LENSES. So exploring these
really old versions, ehh, its not THAT expensive of a habit, and you get to look at an awfully large range of rendering
characteristics while you have fun and experiment. Provided you have a nice new used Nikon D5100, lol. Seriously
that is what its been about. My D40, which is not even part of what I shoot with, it is something I am actively trying
to sell, ACCEPTS the lenses, but the photo output is at 6MP, which is NICE to print from, but not always adequate
for my business of selling prints. Couple that with the miserable ISO range and youc an SEE that I NEED this upgraded
tool on two fronts. You know, so I can spend more money on lenses I don't need to shoot shots I can get with a D700
or a D600 or a D7000 or even a D100, D70s (or the aforementioned D40, lolololol.)

Dang, Ron, thanks for the Mom shot. Well worth scrolling to the end. :)
Likely no one cares, but I will share that these are combo of a Nikon D600 (for the resolution) and a
Nikkor 300mm f4.5 AI, and a D7000 with a Nikkor 180mm f/2.8 ED AI, both manual focus lenses.
The 300mm has chromatic aberration issues, but I am learning to avoid the hot spots that bring it on.
Luckily both these lenses meter fine on those bodies. I just have to dial in the Exposure Compensation
to keep the 300mm in check.

Really nice shot, Ben
I was trying to convince a friend that the D200 he bought from me was NOT a 5hi++y camera, and that all it
needed was a decent lens on it to shine. I sell DSLRs with a starter lens to keep the costs down and make sure
that they can start shooting right from the post office. And some people have even upgraded to a better lens at
the time of purchase. I told him that while he was right, the D200 struggles at high ISOs owing to it's age,
at no time should he ever believe his camera sucks. He wanted to do like me, shoot in bars at night. But
by the time he was ready to buy, all my D90s were sold, my D80, a few D50s, some D70s. I had a D40 and a
D200....that was his choice. I warned him that I was not selling him a 5hi++y camera, but that I was selling him
the best model I had LEFT. The price was right, so he didn't really argue until he couldn't get a decent shot off
inside a bar. I can only imagine what was going through his head then.
SO I took out the oldest thing I had, which happened to be a D100 I traded with Shark for, and put a nice
vintage Nikkor 50mm on it. I was confident it would do fine, and it did. But its easy to forget now that everything
has passed this model by, what a great sensor the early Nikons had. SO LARGE. SO FEW PIXELS. (really should
have performed better in low light, lol.) The lens really helped the photo appear to be higher resolution. Everyone
should know that you USE bodies and INVEST in lenses. This should make that clear. The pics are just testing shots,
but I was happy with the sharpness. The color and contrast could use a bump, but I did not want to edit these.

Looks like I was there, Ron....this year however, I am going with a plan to have all the trees RETAIN
their leaves over the winter, then on one day in February, all the leaves can blow away at one time in a
far more organized manner. I might not even have to rake if it blows hard enough.
Everyone knows I love a cheap camera, but I recently found out the literal interpretation of a
concept I had read several times before and never grasped. I was shooting in yet another dark bar over
the weekend, and I had my ISO set to 5000, too high, but I needed the gain badly. I just bought a friend
a Nikon D3200 because he wanted badly to be able to shoot the same kinds of things that I am into these
days. I told him that was the best he was going to do for now, High ISO is expensive in current-gen cameras.
He lucked into this one for $225.
But he only had a D200, which might as well be blind at night. Great camera, feature-packed, but incapable of
high ISO settings. I had read Ken Rockwell saying dozens of times "this entry-level camera does not allow you
to adjust ISO in 1/2 or 1/3 stops." Ehh, whatever.....I don't even know what that MEANS to be perfectly honest.
So as my friend was struggling in this bar light, I told him to just go to ISO 5000 and his camera would be fine.
He said "I don't HAVE a 5000" I said "Sure you do..." and took it from him and only then, after years of reading
the same thing on all these cheaper Nikons, did I see what that meant. He did not have 4000, 5000, none of my
staple settings for difficult light. He had 3200 and 6400, and I knew that 6400 was going to be a noise-fest. 3200
and 6400.....not enough and too much. Thanks a lot. So I told him to hold at 3200 and be VERY STILL when you
shoot a pic. I realize now that was probably bad advice. But a man needs to suffer a few bad nights to understand
what his camera will do and what it will not.
Never having really BOUGHT a "cheap Nikon", I had no idea that all cameras did not have half and 1/3 stops
where mine did. That was a funny moment Friday night, when I finally saw the meaning of it all.

Those are both very interesting for different reasons, Azar, nice to see you out shooting.
If you ever get a bit more of a drop on something, try shooting at 200mm for the sharpness and crop to get
the tighter shot. Easy to say if I didn't think this might be a D50. Its 6MP are beautiful, but they don't give you
much to crop from. But most 300mm zoom lenses aren't showing you their best at 300mm.
All that said, shooting wildlife is hit and miss to begin with. Hard to get a drop on anything in the wild.
I love the bounding buck, that's killer. I also like the horses way in the background of that wide shot.
Cool I will try it at 200m this time.
Mack
Wonder how winter is for stunning shots of wildlife. I imagine it makes them more intent on soaking up sun and taking in
energy than expending it running away. Of course you have to shoot it both focal lengths, or else why have it? But yeah,
200 will render a sharer picture.

Those are fantastic shots. Coming from the desert, it's nice to see all that water and foliage. :-)
I have to say, Azar, I went over a LOT of options for you for lenses that are sharper, but for wildlife photography,
ON A NIKON D50!...those pics are fine. Pics can always be sharper, either from more expensive lenses or using
extreme shot discipline when you fire the shutter, to using a tripod or monopod when you shoot. What is going to hold
you back specifically on these long distance shots is crop-able resolution. I think. So while I would think hard about a
16 or 24MP body to give you that cropping leeway, I would try a few tricks to make my shots crisper that don't cost anything
while I am thinking about it. But I also mailed you a 5hit-ton of links to the kinds of camera bodies that will give you
the extra resolution, but also safely mount some really cheap, old sharp lenses. Because back in olden tymes, like
when I was in High school, people STILL wanted sharp photos. This is not a new thing. So those OLD lenses, short of
advanced coatings and special glass/special-shape elements, still have a lot of good shots to give up. Most Nikon
users can't use them without damaging the lens mount feelers. The cameras I linked you to all WILL mount them
without damage. SO think about all that. Possible upgrades, definite trigger discipline on the shutter, and some
support if you are not using it now.
There are also things to remember when judging your own work. Since you are likely shooting out of a truck,
or some transpo, remember that something called "seeing conditions" also hurts you when you are not RIGHT
there near the deer in a blind. Heat shimmer, airborne particulates, several things will make your view less effective.
That and a shutter speed at LEAST 1/400th at 200mm and 1/500th when at 300mm. The higher you push the
shutter speed, the less perceived blur will arise from your body/camera's lens swaying imperceptibly back and forth.
Don't say DUH too loud Azar, lol, but I want to show you something about a 24MP camera and a 6MP camera.
I am on record in this thread in saying that I LOVE 6MP Nikons. Gorgeous rendering of digital photos.
But visually it is easy to see what you need. Say this shot is a 24MP shot.....
http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b611/CameraTestsPage/deerquad_zpsc410ddc5.jpg (http://s1294.photobucket.com/user/CameraTestsPage/media/deerquad_zpsc410ddc5.jpg.html)
You have 4 6MP shots in each 24MP shot, so 4 D50 shots in one D3200 shot. Once you pick your crop for
a 24MP shot, you can end up with AT LEAST the resolution of the a D50 in the end and have a zoomed in pic.
Again, DUH, right, but this is what I mean about a body upgrade. I love D50s, great little cameras. But it is VERY hard
to crop a shot from one. Especially in this case. SO if the first pic had been an actual 24mp SHOT FROM A d3200, You can
easily imagine what a 25% crop might look like....like a full resolution shot from a D50. But of course, what this IS is a a
D50 SIZE shot cut down to 25% of its actual area, so of course it is going to look like hell. But if you figure out a way to
get some more MPs in your hands, you'll solve half your issues.
http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b611/CameraTestsPage/deer2_zpsad23da32.jpg (http://s1294.photobucket.com/user/CameraTestsPage/media/deer2_zpsad23da32.jpg.html)
To eliminate camera shake, if you can, use a tripod and use the self-timer set at 2 sec. Free vs. cost of wired cable release and you get the same result.

That's what I do for night landscapes, set the timer....and I have a release, lol.
Well, anytime I am using a tripod I use the timer. Still not sure why I bought the release.
I knew about the timer before I ever considered the release. "Stuff Syndrome" I guess.

There are some really sharp lenses in there. The 35-70 is supposed to be great, though I have always
stopped short of picking one up. 70-210 is way under-rated for a value item. Now if you want to supplement
your stash, which is fairly complete range-wise, you might consider one of the two MF lenses that Nikon
killed the competition with, the 105 f/2.5 AI or the 85mm F/2 AI. Your choice is about $120-$150

Anyone ever shot with the Nikon 105DC lens? Looks pretty cool.
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/105mm-f2-dc.htm
I wanted one on several occasions, but the extra expense never justified it for me. I desire great bokeh like most people,
but I am not really willing to pay more FOR IT. I will buy the cheapest, used, manual focus, 1960 Nikkor I can find for a
decent price. People who know how to use it properly seem to really like it. I would love to have one for myself, but not to
the tune of 700-800 bucks. However in my next post you can get some advice on bargain lenses....
Now, onto the surprising buy of 2014 for me.
I have a 85mm F/2 that I LOVE. When I use it it is usually fast enough for me and the bokeh is beautiful.
But like any shooter that has aspirations of taking better and better shots the more they grow in skill and in
learned-from mistakes, I let my eye wander.
Enter a used ROKINON 85mm f/1.4. I wanted it. It was "cheap". I knew that Rokinon was just one of half a dozen brands
that stuck nameplates on these cheap Korean lenses. What could have been a disaster turned out to be awesome.
No one knows what you will get out of one of these. if the lens is PERFECT, you still can have issues with true
focus depending on tolerances on your camera body in relation to the lens. I was prepared for the worst.
But it was the best under-$200 I've spent on a lens so far. Its not that its SHARP, it is BRIGHT. I am OLD, and
almost all of my best lenses for 'working' are manual focus only. When its DARK in any venue, I can't SEE to focus.
I can't find the POP as lines come into sharpness and back out again. I get by, but only because I am persistent.
This lens POPS. Again, your mileage with any lens may vary, because this same lens on your camera might not
be the same distance to the mirror or sensor as mine and it can affect a person's impression of "the lens"
to the point where its all the lenses fault. For anyone that needs a couple of good portrait lenses, this 85mm f1.4
from Rokinon (Samyang, Vivitar, Bower, etc) is AWESOME. Even I, worst eyes east of the Pecos, was able to
easily manually find the sharpest focus at 1.4 and 1.8. I can hardly do that with my 50 f/1.4.

Great post Brad. To me, an 85/2.8 is a perfect DSLR portrait lens. Back in the film days, I still shot Nikon but inherited a bag of MF Pentax stuff. The body was crap, but there was a Pentax 100/2.8 lens in the bag that proved to be amazing glass. Don't have an equivalent in my bag these days, which is why the 105DC interested me. Saw it on Kijiji for $600CND, which I though was a decent deal.

Beautiful deer!
Love the wildlife shots, and Ron, for some reason I am drawn to nice light fixtures. I have one I shot in NOLA that was completely unique...gaudy, but unique. I sent you a PM, too, btw.
Mack, put that focus zone indicator RIGHT on that line between dark deer head and white space behind it
and you will get a better result. Easy to say from HERE, you admit it was a snapshot, but the camera is dumb,
it wants to focus on that ridge behind the deer. You have to force it to focus on the CONTRAST of light
and dark and be good enough in vision (I'm not) to determine if it DID IT or not.
OR you could do like I do (badly) and simply manually focus everything. I have to make myself use
AF when I can, I just forget, as most of my good lenses are MF only. But the more you shoot, the more you
mess up, succeed, learn, etc. I am digging the slice of life you are sharing with us.
I just love that harem shot on that blanket of snow. Deer are fascinating, infuriating creatures.
OH, by the way, the reason I popped in today was to share this...
http://www.adorama.com/US%20%20%20%20674874.html
we all know I hate these guys, lol, but now and again they just put up something useful and tempting.
This is a GREAT camera for someone who doesn't need to shoot inside, because the flaw that has it
discounted is a burnt out built-in flash. You can buy a cheap hot shoe flash if you have to have flash.
Forty bucks is a great price for what this body can do in good light. Its a great vacation camera, a great
camera for the trunk of your car. You can pick up a cheap zoom for it for about $20-$30. But don't try to
put a compact flash memory card over 2GB in it, it won't work. Old tech.

Think it also boasts a 1/500 sec flash speed which is awesome.
Just picked a mint — and I mean mint — D70s with a VR mid zoom for $125 for my daughter. Have read reports of people using CF-SD adapters and 8GB SD cards without issues with the D70s. Wonder if the same is true with the D70.
I imagine if it works on one it works on the other, and I know D70s takes larger than 2G CF cards...
That flash sync speed was something I would have mentioned if the flash on that $40 one wasn't out, lol.
WHo knows if it works the same with the hot shoe, don't see why not.
All those old Nikons have such wonderful rendition, the 6MP sensor really was a well-optimized thing in those
cameras. You need light, but oh the pixels it makes. I almost bought this one last night, then again today,
but I just have SO MANY DAMNED NIKON BODIES. But the price was so good I thought I could easily sell it and
make $20. In the end I just thought I'd share it and move on.
Been to few concerts lately and am having trouble getting some decent iPhone pics. Love to bring some real gear in but not feasible. Just can't figure out how to get some decent frames, yet I've seen solid concert pix from other iPhones. Work finally upgraded me to a newish 5s yesterday and the camera is certainly better that my old 4s. Curious which apps, settings, etc. work best. Here's a frame from Monster Truck last night. If you like heavy throwback rock, I'd suggest you check them out. They're from DMK's neck of the woods.

That looks fairly dangerous, Shade, lol. Brilliant bit of shooting, though.
Jeff I have never liked any camera phone shot I have seen, in terms of crispness and contrast, but I think its so
completely relative that people talk themselves into believing that its good because its BETTER than their old phone
(and it usually is). But I hope no one ever upgrades their phone solely for the photos. I think you could do pretty well
with a micro 4/3 camera, because in the end its really the size of the sensor that gives you that definition and resolution.
Until you get to an inch, it seems to me that its all tricks, gimmicks and promotio-ganda. I have fallen for all of it,
though thankfully never at retail, always used. I am guessing there are rules in these venues that either say
"NO PRO CAMERAS" or "NO LARGE LENS CAMERAS." My mother bought me Popular Photography for a year,
which I begged her not to do (fixed income) but they are giving magazines away nowadays, so I doubt she
paid much over $15, but I did not want to read about the newest and best, and I did not care to read about how
the pros shoot cats. But there was a camera in there this month that might be the perfect stealth camera.
I see on the website that the review materials are a month behind so I will have to check the actual magazine
at home and get back on it. You might not even care. But it seemed to check all the impossible boxes on ISO
performance and photo quality. The more I read about how it fared the more impossible I thought it
sounded.
I think its a Panasonic since it had a Leica lens.......ahh...found it. Well, never mind, its $900, lol.
Of COURSE its awesome. But it has a VERY SENSIBLE MP count for a larger than normal sensor and
has some really nice retro controls and looks like a joe-schmo camera.
Very deceptive exterior, VERY nice photos. Only drawback? It doesn't make phone calls. :)

Hear what you're saying about larger sensor. Have a few older P&S cameras around here. May bring one with me next time. Would love to bring my P7000, which takes dynamite images, but just a little too chunky for the mosh pit :)
Lol, I just picked up a used P7000 for $49, the defect was the leaf shutter lens cap deal intermittently hangs....
Duh, sooner or later they ALL do that, it did not bother me. I had a P6000 I got for $40 that never impressed
me in any way, a lot of controls but kind of a humdrum performance in anything but great light. I understand the
P7000 is actually quite a decent camera, so I am happy to be getting it. The P6000 is going to go out the door for
$40 in the end and I will lose nothing for having had it awhile.

I re-read my comments on this photo and was a bit mortified....I did not intend to say that I did not like
this pic, or that I thought it was bad. In fact as a phone pic I rather like it. I have a partner that I work
local shows with; he books the acts and I do my best to cover them. And he always asks me what I
thought about this shot or that from his phone, and I always want to say "If I thought they were good,
I wouldn't be here." And by that I simply mean that if it was good enough to promote his show with,
he certainly wouldn't need ME to shoot DSLR photos. I LOVE staying at home nights.
So I tell him that I like the framing, composition, perspective, timing of the capture...things I DO Like
about the shot. Its not supposed to compare head to head, but it can still be a great shot. I am already
a big enough jerk not to come off as one accidentally, lol. This place is about photography, not DSLRs.
And from that perspective, the shots rather wicked. (You know what I DO HATE, though? These freaking
LED stage lights.)
Sorry these are so low res, none of em are over 60kb, skranked them off of FB since I had to format my flash drive.
Up and comer, Marcella Simien, daughter of the Zydeco great Terrance, living in Memphis and earning a living playing

conflicted as to whether or not its even POSSIBLE to make a living at music. I hope she stays with it. Enjoy Marcella

No sweat, conversation was always about quality. Thanks for the comments on composition — I kinda dig it too. And I especially hate the red LEDs. They always seem to make the sensor take a crap.
P.S. you guys have posted some really nice frames in here in the past 24 hours. Great to see the thread come alive again.

I got to town late in the day one spring weekend in NOLA, and arrived at the river just in time to see a sunset cruise
take off down the river. I have shot a LOT of NOLA, but this hour was a first for me, and I scrambled like an ant trying
to make 15 locations happen at once, but eventually the light faded and I got back to doing what I always seem to do there.

I was just sharing it in case someone needed one. That's as cheap as I have ever seen one.
But alas, when I consider the specs of this camera I have wanted for two years, it is clear I no longer need one.
I have two D700s and a D600, a D7000, a Canon 5D and various and sundry trunk cameras of ancient pedigree.
But I am sure there is someone here that could use it's weather sealing, rip-roaring frame rate, decent ISO range
for an old model, and all around quasi-pro features.

Does anyone have experience with converting old black and white negatives and slides over to digital? I plan on using my old Canon XS. I have an older X-ray veiwer to back-light the negatives and I'm getting extension tubes in leiu of a macro lens. I'm hoping to just get decent shots of the negatives and process them in GIMP after. Most of these negatives and glass slides are from the 40's and 50's. My Granfather, his brothers and their father were all into photography, so I have thousands of individual pics to do.
My main concern is getting the right settings when taking pics of the negatives. Would it be better to shoot in monocrome, or color? What light balance would be best? I'm shooting in RAW for sure but starting out with the optimal settings would save me tons of time in the long run.
I've tried a few sample shots without the extension tubes so I'm sure I can get a better, closer shot the negatives later when they show up in the mail. My first tries were at f8, 1/125, 100ISO and auto white balance.
Here's a sample of my first try:
http://i.imgur.com/QbcYR3s.jpg?1
And after inverting the color and auto-balance in GIMP:
http://i.imgur.com/tnC86ZZ.png?1
I used a pacific Image "scanner" to take care of my slides and negatives, not the best idea available, but I was not
spending what they wanted for a good one, not by a long shot. I can't really "recommend" one, but they are the
cheaper alternative and they DO work.
Young JEEZY-us, did you SEE what Canon stuffed into a DSLR this week?
50MP into a full frame sensor. I am just smacked in the a55.
Glad I don't mess with Canon. SOMEONE needs this camera, just not me.

I did a lot of this with film, once upon a time: Copy stand, light box (your X-Ray viewer), monochrome (In case it's not daylight balanced), be viciously clean to avoid specks and be aware that those old emulsions were pretty thick; meter it out. Baring that, a lot of labs provide negative scanning services.

I have a RACE on for today.
Two orders
Both Used equipment.
$160 approx. Value each
One Adorama, TWELVE DOLLARS SHIPPING for one item
One B&H, FREE shipping.
I GUARANTEE YOU the free shipping, which has every excuse to drag along, will ship today.
I can also guarantee you that the $12 I had to pay to ship my order by Adorama will NOT get me the kind of
service you'd think paying for shipping would get for you and it will ship MAYBE Thursday. MAYBE.
Unknowns? Will Adorama screw up a THIRD SUCCESSIVE order? Find out Next week.
They fixed the first screw-up, but I don't really have the time it takes to participate in the unscrewing process.
The second one I just flipped out, and decided just to sell the lenses involved rather than deal with all the red-tape.
Your mileage may vary, I have years of successful orders there myself. But lately it seems like the wheels are
coming off up there.
Curious as to why you're ordering from Adorama if you have no faith in them AND they've screwed up more than once? They're far from the only game in town.
Note: I've ordered no more than twice each from KEH, Adorama and B&H and been happy with all....except a little confusion and delay when I ordered over a Jewish Holiday weekend from one of them.
Well I have to both report and answer that, Dave.
It simply comes down to money. It is easy to fall into the assumption that everyone is the same in the NYC Camera trade.
The two big dogs, both Hassidic Jew-run outfits, and TO THE PENNY, they will both have the lowest price on new, legit gear.
It is when you talk about USED stuff that Adorama runs away with the title. They demolish KEH and B&H on used
gear. And by demolish I really just mean they are 10-15% lower, lol. Sometimes more. But after you factor in the
shipping I griped about, it starts to get a little closer. But I needed a mic mixer the other day, and no one had the one
I wanted, and new they were $250. I had a choice between principle and price and I fell down. AS I have EVERY time I
have had a gripe with Ado. They are like a girl you just can't quit even though you know they are poison and they stick
you good every chance they get. But I have done two things in response. I have cut my purchases WAY BACK so that my
exposure is down, and for new stuff I am back to B&H. It's a tangled web. I got a lens early this year, it was a "E-"
grade, and it had a gouge on the front element and what felt like sand in the helicoids. I thought "Who on earth would
grade this excellent minus?" But it was so cheap that I just took it as a sign to stop using them......for a week, I think,
lol. I use it on a video camera as a wide angle lens. My feeling is that SOMEONE there was just not paying attention
anymore. Ordered a plain Stick mic and I got a wireless stick mic (but no receiver). Ordered a Nikkor 28mm f/2.8
and got a Sigma Mini Wide for Nikon. A dead cell on the occasional DSLR body deal was one thing (three times in 2 years,
all replaced without question or cost) but pure, avoidable mistakes tend to make me a little madder. I used to open boxes
from them like a kid on Christmas, now I open them like there might be a snake in em, "lordy, what will be wrong this time?"
They'll get it figured out, this can't be a general slippage company-wide, this is an individual or two in a large Used dept
that need to be found and fired.
------------------------
BUT THE NEWS IS GOOD for them today, as both packages shipped last night/this morning, so I guess I am just
going to have to call it a tie. What's in the BOX might change that, but they also might get it right. I have found out
as you have that ordering ANYWHERE near one of their holidays is asking for trouble. When the staff returns, they do
not seem to be entirely on their game. And granted, they are usually long holidays, so I am sure the backlog is intimidating.

I always check B&H. They rock.
I wish I hadn't seen this thread. Now I want another camera I won't use.
This one Sony HX400V/B 20.4 MP Digital Camera (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=Sony%20HX400V%2FB%2020.4%20MP%20Digital %20Camera&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ma&Top+Nav-Search=).
B&H price is $398. Free Shipping.
Amazon price, $398. Free 2-day shipping, but that's because I have Prime.
Real question...
How's come most of these prosumer cameras don't shoot macro?
More accurately, when they do, why do I have to be 18" off the subject?
I keep an old sony dsc-r1 just for macros because I can pound the lens right down on the subject like a microscope. Takes STELLAR macros.

Looks like a Grey Rat Snake, there Ron ole boy. Amazing that it let you shoot, although I doubt Michigan is
ready to have snakes dancin in the streets yet.
And Scott, I would almost think that 'with a tripod', 18 inches of macro standoff would be GOOD for lighting.
And for NEW stuff, B&H and Ado both have identical prices or within a dollar of one another. Its the used
stuff where the conundrum breaks in. But the thing I would really say is to avoid any kind of small sensor
DSLR-shaped Point and shoots. I was transfixed by them in olden tymes because the used prices were
conducive to that over a DSLR body. But I would think that you'd do better with THIS CAMERA and a decent lens.
(oops, before I typed it all out, that $389 Nikon D7000 got snatched up)
Then you look at that zoom range and it all starts to get cloudy. But until they make one of those that can
stand up to the low light I use em in, I can't go that route. But I imagine in good light and if you can stand the
shutter lag, they just get more feature-packed every year. The image stabilization alone makes some of
my concerns go away.

Anyone looking for a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 can safely go back to those crazed lunatics down at Ado,
they jacked up the prices $30 (used), I guess because I would buy them as fast as they
put em up at $54 each. I could sell em on cameras or singly at that price and still make
a little bread. But then they jacked em up, and you can tell that no one even looks anymore
because they are up there hanging and rotting in the sun, one $54 and one $64, just
waiting for that person who doesn't have a fast prime yet. Naturally I can no longer
recommend Ado all that much, but this is news, at least to me. I have been watching
that price stay high for two years.

Excellent, you are gaining so much control over it. Your work is more impressive each time I see it.
I have been doing diddley. That's not true, I am way over-worked, but I had to move from stills to video
and sound board now that my friend and I have opened a music venue in Memphis. AS much as I tried
to help musicians with some kind of higher-quality stills to aid them in promotion, now I do video for the
same reasons. It is NOWHERE NEAR as satisfying as photography was. But the guy I taught how to shoot
with a DSLR zoomed past me in the fast lane in skills, and I just realized there was no more need for me to
shoot stills. I get in the occasional dozen here or there, but it is just sad.

Great photo of an English (me thinks) garden Ron. Where and when?

Yeah! It's in Greenfield Village, in Dearborn, MI.
It was bought on behalf of Henry Ford for $5000 and dismantled and shipped to America in 1930.
The cottage was originally built in the 1600's.
A similar cottage today in the Cotswolds would be valued at circa £500k and be officially protected.

:D...I knew that had to be England Ron.
So, in-between the Packers throwing touchdown passes in Green Bay tonight, I spied a nice moon rising down the street...

Wife and I were out in Ventura, CA this afternoon, checking out the post-King tides. Not much to see, other than sand missing from the beaches. Local residents on the beach are glad to see the extream tides leave for the time being...
