Need help. I need a lens wider than 50mm. Shooting on a 5D body. Im looking at the 20mm 2.8 or the 17-40 F4. Keep in mind If im spending roughly double it should be twice the lens. Also if I have missed any gems please turn me onto them.

Any and all help appreciated.

This thread reminds me that my stock lens sucks!

Most stock lenses aren't spectacular but don't let it keep you from making great images. 95% of all lenses are better than 95% of all photographers.

I have sold images I took on my kit Canon lens. Even todays kit lenses are better than yesterdays expensive glass.

Well considering my lack of skill I blame everything on equipment ;)

<$800 mostly landscapes, panoramas, architecture, and HDR. most things without a heatbeat is where i find myself.

I think the 17-40 is where you want to be. There are a few other options like a Samyang 14mm f/2.8 which has gotten very good reviews or an old 17-35mm f/2.8L if you feel you really need 2.8, but my thinking is for what you shoot and the high ISO performance of the 5d, you don't really need f/2.8 and the IQ of the 17-40L is great.

Wolfgang

I thought that would be the ticket I just needed someone else to tell me to pull the trigger.

One other question, What are your thoughts on the 70-200 F/4?

I thought that would be the ticket I just needed someone else to tell me to pull the trigger.

One other question, What are your thoughts on the 70-200 F/4?

I've played with one, it's a great sharp lens for the money, if you don't need IS. In my opinion, it's really an outdoor lens. Not fast enough to give you great shutter speeds indoors. Also, for me, at those focal lengths, f/4 is not fast enough because I have shaky hands. Otherwise it's a fantastic lens.

For what I shoot, I need f/2.8 probably on both zoom ranges, and probably IS on the 70-200, which means expensive and I'll have to wait to buy. I like primes anyways, and I shoot crop for now. I've been tempted multiple times to pull the trigger on the 70-200 f/4, but I shoot a lot indoors and mostly people so IS by itself won't cut it, but nor will just 2.8 in most situations for me. It might work for you though based on what you said you like to shoot. Also, it's a more reasonable focal length on FF and the minimum focusing distances are surprising on all 4 Canon 70-200's.

Wolfgang

Now all thats left is deciding which version of 70-200 I want lol.

Tomorrow should be interesting! Standard wedding gear is a couple 5D's and half a dozen lenses strapped on at all times, but I always said if I absolutely had to, I could do most of the wedding with just a 5D and a 24-105mm f4 L .... well, time to put my money where my mouth is! Good friend asked me to take some pics of their wedding tomorrow (really a 2yr confirmation of their marriage, but they married here in the states and her Venezuelan family never got a proper wedding). I couldn't risk bringing so much equipment with me to Venezuela.... so I get to do the ENTIRE wedding tomorrow with just the 5D, the 24-105mm, and a 580EX flash. Should be VERY interesting!!!!

So as a combined gift from the wife, the in-laws, and my mom, I got a Nikon D3000 with a 55-200mm lens for my birthday.

I'm really excited to step into the photog. world. I've never used a DSLR before, so I am trying to learn as much as I can.

I can't wait til I can get some nice pics like what I see here.

Wow... that was an interesting wedding, sprinkled with some near terror. Murphy was working overtime on this one!

absolutely fuking terrifying when 10 minutes before the ceremony I click the shutter, here a rattle inside the camera, and get a black picture..... pop the lens off and discover that the focal plane mirror that splits light between the viewfinder and the metering/focal sensors has completely come unglued, is rattling loose, and cracked.

Now let me take a second to remind you, I don't have my full kit with me. I don't even have a 1/4 of the kit with me. That's my only camera and lens, and I am up in the mountains, literally hours away from civilization.

Thanks to the grace of God, I had had, on a whim, thrown a tube of super glue in my backpack that morning..... and the ceremony was running a few minutes late. I glued the mirror back together (fortunately it wasn't cracked on the part that went to the focusing sensor!) and then glued it back into the camera. Right side of my viewfinder was realllllllly blury, but other than that I was back in business!!!!

Option 2 if that didn't work would have been to shoot it completely blind, on manual exposure. AF still worked fine, but without the darker mirror there, metering got thrown out of whack by about +3 stops too bright.

Interesting for sure because it was a Venezuelan wedding - similar to ours, but lots of distinct differences in terms of how things are organized and run. Rehearsal? more like a circus show. "let it happen" was the unspoken motto for the day. Cool thing was, it did all happen... and the heart that I saw there was some of the most I've ever seen in a wedding, very touching to see how everyone worked it.

flat out strange when dinner was served at, no joke, 12:45am .... these guys really like to party late!!!! Oh yeah, and I won't even talk about the "hora loca" later on... which was kind of like a mini mardis gras, and music that changed every 30 seconds until everyone was too damned tired to move anymore.

My first attempts at taking decent pictures. These are unedited, and straight off the SD card. They aren't the greatest by any means, but they are better than anything I have ever taken before.

Don't mind the dead grass in the last one, it's been dry as a bone for the last month here.

Volus- Your first photo is the weakest. There is no for ground and the sky is too small in the image. Look up the "rule of thirds". That will help you a lot.

Also the colors are muted and the image is a little too dark. Comparing it to image #2 you see the red pop first and it draws your eye right in to the center of the image. Where as in image #1 there is nothing but glaring sun reflecting off the water and as a main point of focus this is too bright.

Hope that helps. let me know if you have any questions

I appreciate it as I'm no photographer. I just really liked the calmness of the water and lilly pads, so I just wanted a bunch of that in there. What do you mean rule of thirds?

Yup that is pretty much it. Once you get it down to the point you see that way then you will know when to break it and how to break and grow from there. Good luck it is a fun hobby, and remember, The camera has absolutely nothing to do with the picture.

YEP!!! Most people don't realize how much of a profound impact their computer monitor has on how the picture appears. Try an experiment, setup your laptop next to a desktop monitor (or two) and put the same photo up on all of em. You'll be shocked how different it appears.

I try to never work on my laptop if I can avoid it, because the screen on my laptop is terrible. but there are plenty of equally bad desktop screens too ;)

These could have been so much nicer. I have a Manfrotto tripod and an 80-200 2.8 sitting under the tree but I couldnt open them to use tonight.

Me "Can I please use them then they go right back in the box?"
Dad "no."
Me "But this wont happen again for another 500 years!!!"
Dad "Stop exaggerating"

CS5 fixed the heal tool and has an awesome predictive content filter.

Could be the retoucher in me but I think the heal tool leaves little to be desired even in CS5. I have played with it and it never seems to produce acceptable results. I played with an image one day and I was able to retouch powerlines out of a pretty busy image much faster and cleaner doing it the good old fashioned way with much better results. I found the heal tool made the corrections obvious where me using the clone tool was mostly undetectable. Like I said it could be the retoucher in me is too critical. I worked in a large commercial Photo Studio right out of college and had the pickiest of people approving my work so when I started I needed my work to be 100%. That was also long before the CS days before they created the heal tool.

Your mileage may vary. My comment was directed at comparing CS4 to CS5. In CS4 when you were healing and crossed an area of high contrast it diddnt know what to do. Now in CS5 you can cross those high contrast areas and have a decent outcome.

Using a tool that takes seconds to complete what would otherwise take hours or days its a start nut as you have said leaves much to be desired.

:tpd:

Prettymuch what BOTH of you said IMO :)

There's no way the new tool has half the magic fairy dust that folks were claiming, and I still usually go for the tried and true methods that I cut my teeth on.

HOWEVER, there are certain small fixes that I can do now without it automatically grabbing a terrible sample of a high contrast area nearby, which makes it a semi-usable tool for once. . So it sped up just a little some of my small retouching, saving me from having to go back and correct as much.

ALSO one of my steps for doing certain kinds of larger areas includes creating a second layer with a large area of cloned "fix", making no attempt to have the edges blend, and then blending it later with a layer mask. The new tool has proved to be very effective for this.

Wow... nice job. Mind if I ask what your exposure and aperture were on both of those? I would guess the first one had to be a very long exposure at a very small aperture to show that much crud, unless it was really horrible.

Wolfgang
02-06-2011, 12:57 PM
Both were shot in Aperture priority mode at F22 iso 100 set manual focus to infinity and take a picture of a plain white computer screen. You can make one by opening a new doccument in photoshop or even paint. This is the important part. Line your camera up at the left side of the plain white computer screen about 3"-5" away and when you press the shutter it should be a fairly long exposure move your camera to the far right side of your computer screen. At this point you have your file on your card. Open the image in photoshop preferably and all of those black dots are dust on the sensor (unless you have a dirty computer screen).

The camera I bought was a floor model that someone stole the lens off of. So for more than a year it was just sitting out on the floor display at Best Buy without a lens. Dust and crap accumulating the whole time. Getting a $1200 camera for $499 was worth the time it took to clean.

Sauer Grapes
02-06-2011, 02:05 PM
I figured it must have been F22. I'm amazed you got it that clean. As dirty as it was, did you try using it under normal conditions (a more practical aperture and shutter speed)? I've found that generally, a dirty sensor doesn't affect pictures under normal conditions.

Of course, I would have definitely tried to clean a sensor as dirty as yours.

Congrats on getting a great deal. I may have to send you my 20D when it needs cleaned. :-)

Wolfgang
02-06-2011, 02:47 PM
yes under normal conditions F5-F11 it showed minimal dust, however, shortly Ill be doing a shoot for a local Falconry club and most of that will deal with blue skies, small apertures, and I simply despise sensor dust.

If dust becomes and issue for you send me a PM. Ill take care of you.

~OR~

If you are steady handed and willing to do it yourself you can get a kit that is wonderful and fairly reasonable.

Looks great! I love the expression only bugger is the background on the left. But that can be fixed in post. Another thing to consider is the difference in lighting from her face down to the top of her dress. If you look at it as a head and shoulders portrait it looks a little more natural.

Very cool!

It's actually not background, it's foreground...part of an umbrella. And yeah, the rest of the series pulls from an umbrella and low reflector. That particular shot I bounced the shoe-mounted flash off the ceiling...thus the high light.

I went through a dark phase for awhile where i wanted everything underexposed and "edgy," and now I'm going through a light phase where I love to bathe a subject in light. It's funny how we change our perspectives on what we want compositionally.

Another awesome shot! Can't believe DFH made it to Kentucky. If you ever pass through Delaware stay a night in Rehoboth Beach. Dogfish Head has a bar there, and the beer is amazing on tap. Rehbotoh is also a dang nice beach. Very very clean.

I picked up a used Canon SX1 IS yesterday from B&H and they say it is going to be here tomorrow, which would be just in time
to learn something of it over the long weekend. Always used a pocket rocket, I am not very demanding. But this one is going
to be an interesting bridge camera. Sensor is still not working too hard at 10 MP, I would really prefer 8 to tell the truth with
these small sensors, but 10 is my absolute limit, and not that attractive to me after all. I would have gone much cheaper,
but as I am in the TV business, the 1080p video was a deal-maker. While it can't replace a true video camera, it can't freaking
hurt, lol. Can't beat the 20x zoom either. So it is time to start playing around in this thread.

Your in the right place. I wasn't saying you were a amateur or bad or anything I was just stating how its funny that Digital SLR cameras have replaced the point and shoot around here and the fact that everyone takes pictures now. When I first started taking pictures I had a Nikon SLR and I only knew of a few people who were into photography. It was different back then as you had to wait to get your film developed before you could see if you took good pictures. It took alot more skill because if you were a amateur you couldn't just make small tweeks till you got what you were looking. I am glad that everyone is into photography as it is one of my favorite hobbies it just reminds me though that I probably won't ever get to sell my photography as alot of people are shooting their own pictures to hang in their houses. Atleast they are around here. I still consider myself an amateur though so it is not like I had that much of a chance to begin with lol.

EMO, gotta love that St. Augustine Grass.....

Tyler, I was just poking you with a stick, lol.

I agree that modernization is career genocide these days. I have been taking 35mm shots since 1978 when my
dad gave me a "Sears" Mamiya Sekor in High School, but I was never that good at it because the actual camera
body was a Salvation Army pickup, a little worn out, too messed up to trade in for somebody. All the lenses and
stuff I could throw at it never really got the right results. I slowly just became a camera perv, worrying more about
taking pix of chix than composing art. But I could time a cheerleader's high kick like an ace.

I never took the next step and picked up a good body, I got into the USAF and lost the bug. Still kept shooting women
though. But as a career, I have been using video cameras for 25 years and for fun using my trusty Canon Powershot A200
for my "glamour photog" business, read "getting girls in clubs to believe I could take great nudes for them and produce a CD
of the images and never show them around. Which I held to basically, even to this day. I picked up this camera because the A200
is a great little instamatic, but B&H had a nice SX1 IS refurb that I just decided I wanted, and not for nothing, because this megapixel
war is not doing ANYBODY any favors. I figured I needed to get one while the getting was good. They keep stacking pixels on the
same size sensor and it's gonna bite the whole segment in the a55. But never worry, if your pictures are good enough, you can sell them.
That's how I got my current job, I made a commercial and tried to sell it to my current boss, and rather than buy the spot,
he bought ME.

------edit---------

As for "around here", don't take it as total career genocide, becuase people here do the same thing all the time. I call it
the yuppie circus, although I don't mean to be insulting to ANYONE. The get into roasting their own beans, owning
suicidal looking razors to shave with, they collect wine, port, cigars, pipes, pipe tobacco, all in bulk and all in on everything...
And then 80% of them drop it like a bad habit. SO yeah, this is a tough place to sell photos, lol.

My Old camera Elph Powershot sd200...state of the art in 2004, lol. Still works though.

OLS

This is twice that I have bashed the people who get into everything, coffee, wet shaving, pipes, etc.
I need to apologize early to them, again, I do not mean to insult, but I do anyway. I have never been a
rich man, and I can't do most of the things a lot of our members do, I am interesting in doing just enough to
feel like a king without selling my throne. Everyone is welcome to their diversions and hobbies and luxuries.
Don't mind me, haha. As for the term yuppie circus, I made it up right then, although I do categorize this
type of activity as "yuppie" something or other. I just haven't come up with a good, patentable name for it
yet. I do not consider people with yuppie interestes to be yuppies, per se. :) But I'll be danged if you ain't
Young Urban Professionals, dammit.

I sure did. Not as exciting as Fallingwater. The current owner has it filled with his FLW collection so nothing flows or matches like Wright would have designed it. Today I was shooting with the Canon S5 IS, an "old" superzoom from back when superzoom still meant
8 megapixels and 12x zoom. This was kind of a test run to see what the camera could do before
I gave it up to my nephew in August in the Smokies. He's been shooting with a nice Sony point and click
for a few years now, and really enjoys photography, but he is convinced for now I guess that that means
you can get away with just having a good eye, which he does indeed. But this camera will give him at
least some idea of what shutter speed and aperture are and how they interact. I am hoping he will
embrace the tedium somewhat and use it til it falls apart. We'll see. As for my part, I like it a lot.
In fact in some ways I like it better than my SX1, but I had to have the 1080p video capability, or rather
I would never give that up. I think the images might be better at it's 8MP than at the SX1's 10MP.
By the way, I was having recall work done on my Chevy today and that is why it's mostly car pics.
The flowers were at Walmahrt down the street. It was a 2 hr wait. :(

MY GOSH, this camera rocks, lol...look at the color and the clarity of that sensor! Of course that's broad-
a55 daylight. (and hot, too) sheesh. But I like that little camera.

More of these from the Canon Powershot S5 IS. Back to what I was saying about the Megapixel wars,
I got the SX1 for me, and I picked up a B&H used S5 for my nephew. But the more reading I did, the more
it was clear that stacking millions more pixels on the same sized sensor was madness, and I had best get
a low MP camera for the drawer before the war raged on past common sense, as always seems to
happen in PCs, tablets, cameras, etc. As long as people buy in, the camera-makers have no reason to look
at it from a good sense perspective....blabblah. Anyway, I continue to be amazed at the abilities of this
freaking camera. I know why it went away, "time to get on to MORE magapixels and a longer zoom."
But I think I know why a lot of the reviews say, I think I will bring "CameraX" back to the store and go back
to my S3, or S5" This is a good little unit.

This one is over-exposed on purpose...sorry, I wanted to see something in particular.

Oh I intend to go and get a SD card today at Big Lahts....nah. I have to stop the bleeding on this
project today. I have three cameras, all kinds of accessories and I am down 1000, haha. You'd think a person
in the TV business would have a tripod, but I didn't, haha. I have access to a dozen, but not one for me.
Got a bunch of 16G SD cards, some rechargeable AAs, a backpack, it's a slope, I think. But I threw
away my lift ticket on this one. I think I am gonna test this 1080p video tonight.

I like the effect of filtration on your shots, Dave. I need to get my filters on my camera. I have yet to
unwrap the package because I have been testing out another camera. Wonderful balance to those photos.

These should be the last posted photos from the unfiltered collection. :D I was testing some features on this
WELL-used S5 before my 30 day warranty runs out, and learning various things. It's tore up in the glass
coating dept, the LCD and viewfinder I mean. But mechanically and optically it seems to be alright. I shrank these
down to an easy forum size. It's been an awfully long time since I messed with the ins and outs of actual
photography outside automatic point and shoot. These were all manual, lol. Enough apologies.

You are right it's hot. I combine shooting trips with my evening walks which really has an effect on the light,
granted it's better than midday, but wouldn't it be nice if I could shoot at 7am or so? It is still plenty hot in the
evenings here, but if I have to go and walk anyway, I now just take the camera. Of course it is all new to
me again, haven't shot film since 1980-82, and have really kept the P&S at home unless I was on vacation or
shooting boudoir. So it's like a newlywed for me lately, taking it out everytime I go outside.

Better light shot of the church, and a preset White Balance, too.

This stems from a friend of mine, used to work together in TV production and we are still both in town, both having
moved on from TV stations proper. This is his photostream, and it is excellent.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/30963102@N05/with/5360680841/

Now while I am not trying to copy his work per se, this photo and the post-processing is an homage to his work.
If you look at all his photos, a photo very much like this is in there, his is better than mine, but I was only trying
to duplicate the STYLE of his 3 bridges photo. Here is HIS photo by the way.....

http://www.flickr.com/photos/30963102@N05/4306143296/sizes/l/in/photostream/

He and I both have the career-type knowledge of photoshop, but he has always been better at actual graphic design
than me. So I look at his work and try to apply what I like to my own work. Most of what I have posted in this thread
is getting used to the camera and it's strengths and weaknesses. What I post from here on out will be more artistic
than straight photos, mostly because my super-zoom does not have the dynamic range or image quality of a good DSLR.

All that drivel said, thanks spectrr, can't believe you're missing the shack.

It was one of the smaller ones, but nonetheless, a REAL floppy. I'd say half of the people that post
here never even saw one before, lol. When I shot it I was just shooting an old style disc in the street.

It's funny, I used to go out walking every night or at least every other night, but til I got a nicer camera,
I never thought, "Hey, take your camera out with you". Well tonight I was out hoping to see the ducks
that hang out in this creek. Tonight they were there, and so I took the settings to continuous shooting,
and shot the ducks. As the lens sags and rises, the shots are all over the place, especially on the slow
shutter speed I had to use near dusk. So sometimes the ducks were not even in the shot. So I was
deleting the crap and something caught my eye. Good thing I had the polarizer on so I could see through
the water easily. Right as I am hitting "delete", I see a pattern.....can YOU?

The duck must have because those shots are consecutive at about a half second a pop. It only took the
duck a half a second to leave the frame.

That reminds me of my girlfriend's friend's wedding pictures. The photographer did not even get a picture of the kiss during the ceremony. Wtf? Seriously? That snake pulled up short for good reason. That's a nice sized snake, but a duck would love nothing more
than to kill that snake deader than dead. One that size, might end up in a draw, but I still give the edge
to the duck.
