Clearly not a good picture but all I have is the camera on my phone.
Ran into this huge mantis on Friday, he is protecting my lavendar bush, he was still around after the storm.
He is much larger in real life than the pic gives him justice for.

Congrats! Glad it went well. I was shooting a wedding in Lancaster PA last weekend in the ridiculous heat. It was steamy, and not in the good way!!

That is where I last lived, if your in town again look me up and we can mini-herf!
I live about 30 minutes North now.

While I did not take it, this is one I acquired from a friend as a going away gift when I left the Targeting shop at 8AF. It's about 11x14, framed with an engraved plaque that reads "USAF Targets. Delivering Love 2000lbs at a time"

I have a Canon T1i with a nifty 50 and am wanting something better with a full frame sensor. I have the other stock zoom lenses but they are mediocre so I don't use them. A buddy has a Nikon 300s and it is considerably better so I am leaning toward Nikon.

Camera body suggestions???? -full size sensor and hd video is a must

Full sensor Canon is the 5D Mark II, I have a Canon 60D. I have found that getting Great Glass aka Lenses is the way to go, buying low end lenses is a waste of money.

ambientboy

The 5DmII is solid and you can't go wrong. I also have a 7D and it's performance is top knotch, actually better than my 5DmII (but the image quality is a little better for the 5DmII). Buy good glass...always...and learn the ins and outs of each lens like your life depends on it. Having two lenses that you can do anything with is better than 5 lenses you can barely control.

As for Nikon, the only thing I don't like about Nikon (and I do mean the only thing that doesn't have to do with software/operating systems) is that each line requires different lenses, whereas a Canon EF lens fits almost any Canon camera...film or digital. But if you get to know Nikon well and enjoy it, stay with what you use well.

I am beginning to outgrow my Canon S95 Point and Shoot so I just pulled the trigger on my first DSLR. I got a Canon T3i with a 18-135 EF-S IS lens along with a UV filter and some other goodies. I figured that would be good to start, I am sure once I fall further down this slope I will upgrade lenses quickly. Once everything shows up and I snap a few photos I will be sure to put some up.

I've had my T2i for about a year and a half, good camera. Do wish I would have spent a little more on the 60D, but I'm happy. Rented a 24-105mm L lens and man, that makes a HUGE difference. I few of the pics above were taken with it. Scraping together the money to buy the 24-105....can't wait!! :tu

Ahh! A thread I can jump head first into!

Photography was something I always wanted to get into when I was young, but it was too expensive (mistakes on film get costly), and I'm one that learns by doing. But when digital SLRs came down to around $1000, I jumped in.

I've been shooting on and off for about 4 years now. I really need to have the passion to shoot, otherwise my shots just look like anyone else's photos. But when I'm really in the mood to shoot, it's obvious that I put feeling into each shot.

I'm terrible at picking out what's my good work and clumsy work, I'm my own worst critic, but I think these are some of my better ones.

Bingo! It's a 12AX7 vacuum tube macro.

For those that don't know, it's a preamp tube that's about the diameter of a nickel, and about 2.5" tall.

Here is a quick images I found on google.

http://tctubes.com/images/products/detail/241_12AX7_RCA_2_800.jpg

My shot is a macro of the internal wiring. Those flat copper bands you see welded to the copper pins are about the thickness of a hair, and the pins are about .5mm

I have a Canon S95 as my pocket camera that I use for underwater everyday stuff. I started looking at strobes last night, but I don't think I will invest in one. Maybe if I stay down here for another year. I just ordered a Canon T3i with 18-135 EF-S kit lens as my first DSLR. I will not be buying an enclosure for the DSLR, way to much money.

Never owned a Canon. Only Nikons. Yeh those enclosures are like 5x the price of the damn camera.

The S95 is the best point and shoot Canon has put out, it should get you some good results under water if the light is right. Let me know how you like the HD video recording. I've shot some various videos in 720p at 60fps, it's pretty slick looking when you can knock it down to 15 or 30fps and still have the HD resolution. If I had a better internet connection I'd upload some to Youtube.

I meant the video on the T3i, I believe all that is the same as on the T2i, it's uh-mazing. I filmed a Korean Tae Kwon Do team, and slowing it down to 15fps made for some awesome footage.

Do yourself a favor. Buy these two items. It will help greatly. The first for the camera and the second will help out with your photography in general especially when using the manual modes. It's a very interesting read.

Fisheye's are good but kinda limit the style I think. Nikon has a 10mm don't they? That should be good for most building shots. Although a fisheye would be fun as hell to shoot with.
When looking at the on-line rental stores, if you get insurance, check their policies if something happens to the lens. Rentglass had the cheapest rental rates and I believe you're only responsible for $30, no matter what happens to the lens. None of them cover water damage, they call it negligence. A lot of the insurance policies require you to pay 10-20% of the repairs/replacement.

I've missed this thread since the beginning of the month I guess.

Thanks for the compliment! The subject is in fact my Dad. And I keep that random shot around because I do feel I captures his character as you say.

That was the very first shot taken with my Nikon 105VR Micro, I literally pulled it out of the box, snapped the lens on my (I think D200 at the time) camera, and just pointed and shot. My Dad was probably amused because I was like a kid having my own private X-mas.

Not a fan of the lomo.

As is, the focal softened looks too fake (blur above her head where the eye expects it to be sharp + same blur applied across the entire photo), But it would totally be my vote IF you graduated strength of the blur (left and right edges being VERY blurry, lightening up till you get to the subject) ...

(heavier blur than yours... a lighter blur like yours will look much more realistic, a heavier blur like this can be riskier, but gain a little more pop). given the two side by side, I would probably pick the lighter blur.

Taking a semester off from school to shoot around the country. Somewhere new every few weeks should be fun. Any MUST HAVE gear you all can think of?

2 bodies
11-16 2.8
24-70 2.8
80-200 2.8
3 flashes and wireless triggers
6 batteries
100gb+ of cards
sensor dusters
eneloops+chargers

oh man, that sounds awesome, inspirational, and I'm officially jealous!

Specific gear depends a bit on what kind of photography you're planning on focusing on and how your getting to where you go. Driving all the time? Will you always have your car as a "home base" to store extra stuff you don't have with you?

Something to hold it all, make it a nice modular system. Maybe a way to take a subset of that with you if its raining.

www.thinktankphoto.com makes terrific gear belts n pouches. I highly recommend their stuff. I also have a number of them, so if you have "what do you think of X" questions, shoot me a message.

I took a lowepro slingshot 200AW with me to London years ago. PRO was that I had all my gear QUICKLY accessible in a unobtrusive looking sling bag (1Dmk2, 17-40,70-200,85,flash). CON that I discovered the hard way is that after many weeks of all that weight bearing down on one shoulder is NOT a good thing. Recommend the bag for short trips / days... but not for long days / many days.

Take a look at www.lensbaby.com , it might fit some of what you're doing on the inspirational side of life. I've had a Muse and a Control Freak for many years. I rarely use them, but they're loads of fun when I do!!

Ahh, landscape is the style that eludes me. Much more of a journalism / people guy.
Nope, no experience with the leather strap. I've always used the stock camera straps.

I don't have their pixelpocketrocket. I always just threw cards in a little flip open pouch on my belt till i got home to download them.

Speaking of downloading, I'd recommend an external drive as a secondary storage device. You want to have a copy of the pics in two places at all times... and ideally, the hard drive doesn't get stored with the laptop.

Ill always have my laptop and external HDD along but at the same time Im not one who is usually paranoid about corruption. Should it happen I know not to format the card and just recover whats on it with Rescue Pro

That's a sweet lens!!! But be reallllllly careful with that depth of field! I've got a 35mm 1.4L and you'd be amazed how quick it goes out of focus! ESPECIALLY with people. It's almost impossible to take a picture of two people in the same frame. Even one person is difficult, the nose might be pin sharp and the eyes blurry as vaseline. Not saying it can't be done... and when it comes out right, its a great photo! just, be aware that pics that look good in the camera often are A LOT blurrier than you realized once you get back and look on the computer.

Luckily I tried it out on some ornaments on the tree, and you are right, at 1.2 the same ornament is tack sharp where I focused and the side is blurry as could be. When set at 2.8, they came out beautiful. We'll definitely keep an eye on it when snapping shots of people. It sure is fun to play around with though! :tu

I will play. Picked up a 50mm prime 1.8 lens a while back to use in an attempt to do studio-like photography of the kids. $200 bux at a studio was getting ridiculous (but I cannot argue with the skills necessary to produce quality shots).

DAMN! an L lens? You're a baller!

:r not even close Justin. I rented one and saw the difference better glass can make. I cringe like crazy spending more for the lens than I did for my camera.
But I compare it to going from a point and shoot and a DSLR, the pictures come out so much better. This will be the only L lens I buy, unless I start getting paid for what I do and there is no plan for doing that, besides, I'm no where near good enough.

I should mention also that it is a refurbished lens from Canon. I can't see spending retail on a lens that has been fully checked, with the refurb, they fix what was broken and fully test the lens before reselling it. Granted the warranty is only 90 days, but if it's been fully inspected, I see no reason for failures anytime soon.

Jeff, those are awesome, the 50mm are so much fun to shoot with. I rented the 1.2 over Christmas, I really liked it but the DOF can be tricky sometimes.

Okay, now I need some help buying a 77mm filter. It will be mostly for protection of the front glass, but I don't want a $12 filter on the front of this lens.
Any recommendations? I realize it's easy to spend hundreds on a filter, I'm looking for something under $200, the further under, the better. :D

Tiffen makes a good filter. 77mm in the $20 range from B&H.

Very VERY interesting test done here:

I knew cheap filters could affect your pictures, but I honestly had no idea how much. I'm taking the crap UV filters I bought from Best Buy off my lenses immediately and getting some nice ones.

Get a B&W UV haze filter. Always get B&W, they are by far the best. Should be able to grab one at adorama or B&H for around $100

Thanks for the link Brian. I've seen similar tests done. One of the best pieces of advice I heard awhile back.......if you buy an expensive lens with expensive glass in it, why would you put a cheap filter on it and risk adversely affecting your images.

Unfortunately I only heard that recently, so I've been shooting for awhile with UV filters on my lenses that who knows how much they affect my photos :td I don't think they're crappy filters, I don't even remember what brand, but I know I didn't pay more than $30-40 for them.

Looking at those tests, I would still go with the B&W filters, I wack my gear all over the place and generally treat it like the tool it is for me. The B&W's have never gotten scratched or loose or anything in the 10+ years I have been shooting. All of the hoyo's I have used have been pretty weeny.

I noticed in that test they didn't have access to B+W filters. I've seen a few tests with them and they always rate very high. Looks like Amazon has several and the prices seem very good. :banger

Oh man, have fun! That is one of my favorite lenses! I find that at weddings about 2/3 of my shots end up being from that lens, it simply never leaves one of my cameras!

Only problem I've had with mine is that its gotten loose with age, pointing the camera downwards will extend the lens on its own... annoying at times... but I couldn't be happier with the lens and would buy another in a heartbeat.

(using a on 5D btw, so its plenty wide enough... can't get used to it on a cropped sensor.. usually end up using a 17-35 on that camera.

:r not even close Justin. I rented one and saw the difference better glass can make. I cringe like crazy spending more for the lens than I did for my camera.

You would be shocked and amazed at how many people will pay good money for work that we would consider to be "sub-par" ..... Do understand that I am by no means advocating lazy and crappy pictures!!! We should always strive to do the best we can... but don't let self doubt sell yourself short because other people are better.... there will ALWAYS be someone better! I've been there, I've gotten caught up looking at other people's breathtakingly amazing work that's just out of my league... and I lose sight of the fact that I can take a good pic too! Remember, there's always someone worse than you too.... AND they're getting paid! Always be honest about what you can do for someone, have plenty of examples of your work, and don't be afraid to put yourself out there.

I've been giving some serious thought to trading my 18-55IS and 55-250IS for a super zoom like the Tamron 18-270. I almost grabbed a Sigma 18-250 cheap but the lack of IS gave me pause. I keep going back and forth - it would strictly be for convenience sake to not have to carry around 2 lens and/or potentially miss a shot due to needing to stop and swap lenses.

Andrew I have a Sigma 70-300 without IS and it does good at the shorter distance, but at 150+ without IS, I get a lot of OOF shots. A tripod is almost necessary unless you have a bunch of light (outdoors).

Thanks Jeff...that was why I held off. The whole point of this lens would be for "walkabout" so by definition with no tripod. I try not to be a cheapskate since I realize that photography is not a cheap hobby but dropping $500 for a lens to put on my $400 camera is a tough one for me. :) Plus I am really happy with the IQ on the two lenses I have.

Love it!

I had to run earlier, but to elaborate;

I love the CoolPix, I think this is the 3rd one that I have had. I miss the feel of my old F3's and the Nikkor lenses, but digital is definately a bit more convinient than film. Boo and I also have a Cannon DSLR, but it can be a bit awkward to carry on hikes. The CoolPix slips right into a shirt pocket or side pocket on the pack. If it is a pain to carry, I won't have it and will miss pictures.

That being said, I still lug a Bogan tripod and multiple lenses on occasion :D

I feel you there. That Tongariro hike I posted is about 20km up over three volcanoes. As much as I wanted to take a point-and-shoot for ease, I knew I'd regret it with the views. But let me tell you, a DSLR with battery grip with a wide-zoom gets friggin HEAVY after about 5km.

Point-and-shoots have come such a long way over the last 5yrs, particularly when it comes to landscape photography.

Now that's just a handful out of the hundreds I took over a long weekend and really only a couple of those stand out as anything more than snapshots for me. There is definitely a lot more to this than buying a half decent camera and shooting in RAW.

Looks like I might be buying a new "deployment camera". Any suggestions? Looking for something under $300.

We have our good DSLR and lenses but I don't like taking that out into a field environment. I had a Nikon point and shoot for my last trip to Iraq but I cannot find the charger for it and I am leaving for India this week for a month

Guess I should include a couple of my pics in this thread too

That is the first step in taking better photos, recognizing the camera is only the tool, a really good photo only comes from a good photographer.

Yoy can take very nice photographs with "regular" cameras. You just have to follow the parameters of that camera. JMH2CW

I was torn between a fisheye and a macro lens. I chose macro because I figured I would get the most use out of it.

Wolfgang
03-09-2012, 09:40 PM
Good choice. I would avoid circular fisheye lenses in general. Instead look into a wide angle lens that wont distort the picture immensely. Somewhere in the 14mm-17mm range on the short side would wrk well. Canons 17-40mm ƒ4 is reasonably priced and great quality.

What it comes down to is choosing the lens for what you shoot the most. :D

I was actually looking in the Samyang/Bower/Rokinon 8mm f/3.5 fisheye. It's manual focus only and is not a circular fisheye. I kinda like the distortion, but this go around it's the marco. Now I need a photo backpack :gary

Very nice photos, guys! I have much to learn to make my pics look that professional. :tu So, the question is: How do you guys do it?

1. Learn the Rule of thirds and basic photo composition
2. Learn the relationship of apature to shutter speed to ISO as it relates to your camera. (learn to shoot on manual mode or AV (in canon) mode)
3. Learn how your flash works for different lighting situations and when to use it for the right effect
4. Learn the very basics of PS or the photo editing softwear of your choice.
5. Always have some sort camera with you at all times
6. Take A LOT of pictures.

The DOF is phenomenal. Here's the info on the shot:

(sidenote, bookmark that exif viewer, I love it)

Fashion stuff is usually shot above f/12. I tend to hang around f/13 or /14 depending on my light source.

The shot of me in the mirror is shot at f/2, as you can see a very clean bokeh without geometric distortion or the hexagonal patterns that you often see in Canon lenses. (which actually doesn't bother be, but some people get annoyed). The bokeh on this lens it distinctly noticeable up to f/8 because it's both a macro and non-macro lens.
