Friend of mine GAVE me a Sunpak 555 and want to hook it up to my Canon T1i

1st - is there a hotshoe connector?
2nd - is it worth the effort?
3rd - Possibility of Damage to my T1i?

I understand I may need to use it in full manual but did I mention it was free? :D

DO NO plug it into the side of the camera - YES there is the possibility of damage. Small.... but there...

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/245292-REG/Wein_W990560_Safe_Sync_Hot_Shoe_to.html
thats what folks generally use to plug in.... but that would kind of defeat the purpose of free now wouldn't it? :tg

Anyone else have some ideas for him?

Thanks Francis. Free is best but 50 bucks isn't so bad. Looking into the 480 or 520 but they aint free ;)

daaaamn that takes some guns.

I played with handholding a 300/2.8 once.... not easy....

I picked a used one up for a good price a while back. Optics were superb, but I didn't have much use for a 300mm lens, especially one that heavy.

I sure am E.J. after shooting 500 pictures today my shoulder loosened up but now I have ice lol. Ive been reading the manual all day. My favorite parts are the flash commander, bracketing, and dials on the front and back of the grip. Still learning too.

P.s. I know I was talking about going canon but with 2 bags full of nikon bodes, lenses, and flashes its not cost effective. Both companies are equivalent (IMO) One is better one year and the next the following. I also put the 10mm 2.8 fisheye on hold. that would heve been good for curves lol.

The worlds original airplanes. Who woulda thunk youd be good at bird photos too?!

Seeing the tree shot in this weeks photo competition (http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/showthread.php?t=30679) got me in the artistic mood, so I hope the original author does not mind that I played around with it a little.

I made it a warmer tone, but I very easily could have stayed with the cool tones and been happy, I was just in the mood for red at the moment. Filtered it out to a brushstroke texture and thats about it. If I was a nature painting fan, that could then get sent to a canvas printer and you got an instant painting, minus the frame :)

100% of any credit goes to the original author, not me. I just ran a couple filters, nothing more.

How good is the sensor cleaning that is now on the 40 and 50D for Canon? As I recall it just vibrates the sensor to more or less shake stuff off, but has it seemed to be effective?

Not really. To really clean the sensor, you still need to use one of the products mentioned here. I used to use the swabs with solutions that were available, but it seems that the 50D sensor would get destroyed using the same liquid as the 40d sensor cleaner. Better to use a non-liquid. You gotta remember that the sensor is not THAT fragile, it can be cleaned if you're careful. And, it DOES need to be cleaned every now and again unless you want to spend hours cloning away dust spots!

I just bought a "rocket blower" and it helps a lot, but I would still like to clean my sensor. I think I'm going to send the 1D MK II to canon and have it "tuned up". It's due.

Unless canon has improved their sensor cleaning service over the last few years since I cared to check, you may need to clean it when it gets back anyway.

Same here, every lens I've bought I immediately got the UV filter.

It had some dust in it from the package so I cleaned it with some canned air and voila, it was ready to roll.

This lens is super light.

Wolfgang

and yet it has a metal mount. The front glass doesn't move so dust wont get into the lens as easily. A circular polarizer would be a good candidate for this lens since the front element doesn't rotate.

What would you consider the essential skills to learn in Photoshop?

(if you have good links that'd be great too!)

Wolfgang
04-16-2010, 11:07 AM
crop and sharpen. :r

but seriously

learn how to do levels, curves, selective color, and color balance.

spectrrr
04-16-2010, 04:01 PM
For starters, Camera raw. much easier to get it semi right before it hits photoshop.

After that, the essential can't live without skill I think is LAYERS and MASKING. Being able to add a curves layer, then use a brush to paint in the effect where needed is invaluable.

ALWAYS work non-destructively - make a new layer for most new edits, that way you can always follow the breadcrumbs backwards to change something if its not working or needs tweaking.

create a layer mask with the little button in the corner.

use the Paint brush. Black paint makes it disappear, white paint makes it appear.

I prefer to paint with the brush opacity set to 100% and the flow set to 5-20%

Best natural blending results if you right click on the canvas with the paint brush selected and set your hardness to somewhere less than 50%

Done :)

My main C&C points would be:
1) Too much blur in the face, ends up looking a little unnatural. Best way to do it is have a layer of heavy blurring, then paint in the mask, then lastly, dial back the fill or opacity on the layer itself until it looks good. The first few times you’ll want to make it too blurry, but in most cases, you have to under-do it a little bit so it is subtle enough to deceive the eye.
2) The face is too dark, even darker than the rest of the body. Make a curves layer to increase the brightness and then brush it on with a mask over the face. Use a brush with 100% opacity and 10% flow. Big size, 0% hardness. Practice big subtle strokes, so that a little bit of the adjustment bleeds off the edges of the face or wherever you are painting. Then the viewer won’t be able to tell you brightened the face.

Helpful hints:
1) Be SUBLTE! You really don’t need to go crazy with an effect, just do it lightly. A touch here, a touch there. Always use a soft brush and a low flow so it will blend together well.
2) Pay attention to your edges!! Look at the optical illusion below. If the colors were side by side, you would know they were the same color. But you believe they are different colors because of the edges that separate them. The same principle holds true in Photoshop, and also it’s inverse. When you have two dissimilar regions, you can trick the eye into thinking they are the same by blending or altering the edges between them.

Helpfull shortcuts:
1) Ctrl+backspace will fill the mask with the background color
2) Alt + backspace will fill the mask with the foreground color
3) When you are painting, the X key switches between the foreground and the background colors (effectively switching between black and white, show and hide)
4) Holding Alt and clicking on a layer mask will display the black and white layer mask. With this, you can see how your brush strokes appear.
5) Holding Shift and clicking on a layer mask will temporarily disable the mask (same effect as filling it with white).
6) Holding Alt and clicking between two layers will make the top layer ONLY apply its effect to the layer below it. It will also be subjective to the layer mask below it. Sounds a little complicated with words, but try it and you’ll see.

So here is my take on retouching the image. Below the image, there’s some explanations and a link to the PSD file.
Retouching is always a bit of a subjective thing, as are the monitors we’re viewing on. I gave a couple options, and depending on the monitor you are viewing it on, one will look better or the other will.

retouch 1
http://www.cardullophotography.com/images/cigars/kenstogie-retouch1.jpg

retouch 2
http://www.cardullophotography.com/images/cigars/kenstogie-retouch2.jpg

The PSD file for these can be downloaded HERE (http://www.cardullophotography.com/images/cigars/kenstogie-retouch.psd)

I got a little carried away with the retouching and went beyond adding just a couple layers of brightness. You probably want to download and open the PSD file before reading further. I’ll give a quick rundown of the layers and what they do. You can turn off all the layers and then, starting from the bottom, turn each one on and you will see the individual effect of it. 80% of the retouching could have been accomplished with just two layers to blur and brighten. All the other layers are just the final 20%, the details.

The layers:
1) This layer is the only difference between the first image I posted and the second image. This just adds a little bit of edge contrast. The layer was created by blurring the image, then heavily sharpening it, then dialing back the fill % on the layer. The final touch wad a layer mask to brush out the eyes, because a natural side effect of this kind of adjustment is that the eyes get darker, and we don’t want that!
2) Just your standard garden variety Gaussian blur, but very subtle. Pay attention to the lines of the face. Cheeks, mouth, nose, eyes, these all need to be sharp. Everything else is optional.
3) Just a plain blank layer of white. Turn on this layer and off to see the effect of the retouching layers above it.
4) I used the healing brush to take out the strand of hair in her face, and some misc. pimples, color splotches, and other things.
5) I used the clone stamp tool to take out the errand strands of hair on top of the head, and to retouch a couple of the healing brush’s mistakes.
6) Her teeth were not bad, but I went ahead and did it anyway to show you. Create a layer that just desaturates it, then brush this in over the teeth and the whites of the eyes. This is an example of where a HARD and precise brush is needed over the usual soft one. Finally, dial back the fill on the layer so that the effect is very subtle, NO ONE has perfectly white teeth, so if you make them too white and bright, the eye knows something is wrong!
7) In addition to the whitening, I also wanted to brighten the teeth ever so slightly. This layer ONLY applies to the layer below it (and thus is subjective to the layer mask of the layer below it). It is achieved by holding alt and clicking between the two layers.
8) Here is one of the most important layers, because it corrects the darkness in the face.
9) Shadows and bags under the eyes are always difficult to deal with. Sometimes there is very little you can do for them, because anything you do will look strange an unnatural. In this case, the best bet was to soften them a little. Without them, her face looks flat, the bone structure appears off. This was not the best example of how to deal with that, but it gets the job done. I just clone stamped some cheek skin over the bags, then dialed back the fill on the layer so you could still see them, just softened a little.
10) I like my images nice and bright, so here’s a general boost!
11) The eyes needed just a little more brightening than what we got from the teeth layer, so this layer is just a subtle boost.
12) She has beautiful green eyes, so I wanted to bring out the color a bit more. Subtlety on this one is extremely important – too much and she gets lizard eyes! Play with this layer a tad, increase the fill on the layer a little bit, and you’ll see how quickly the effect is overdone.
13) In Photoshop, the colors on the image look great to me (and would print great from a lab). BUT on the web, in the sRGB color space on the browser, the image gains A LOT of red saturation. This adjustment layer fixes that by dialing back the red channel a little bit. I only masked it into the face, because the skin tones were the only areas that was bothering me. Depending on your monitor, this may look great or terrible.
14) Same as the above, except I duplicated the previous layer and masked it in again on a couple extra saturated spots on the cheek
15) This layer is subjective, you may like it or not. I reduced the laugh lines a little bit by completely erasing them with the healing brush tool (precision is not needed). Then I dialed back the opacity on the layer until I liked the level of the effect. Then I filled the layer mask with black and just painted in the lines.
16) That’s it! Here’s the original image, you can show and hide the layer to compare and see the difference!

Francis, Thanks for the tutorial, I have been trying to digest it and am working at it now and more later. I was all set to add my 2 cents worth but I've got to say that I am using my laptop's monitor and I am not sure I am seeing what I should be. I have a monitor at work (Viewsonic I think but it's mine)
that I am going to bring back home and try this further. I will share my comments at that point. As I am actually studying this as it's great to have the PSD file and see how its done by a pro. Thanks again for the tutorial :tu

I attempted to "rep' but "you must spread some rep around before add to this individuals reputation" Damn.

My pleasure. It will take some time to get the hang of it. Photoshop is very complex, and there are dozens of different ways to accomplish each and every step I listed there. Some ways are better than others in certain situations. Everyone's workflow is different, so as you go along you'll get a feel for how YOU like to see a photo, and how YOU like to work. Some people swear by levels and won't touch curves. Some people swear by curves and won't touch levels (me). Both work, its just what you're comfortable with (in most cases).

If you want to see absolute friggin magic, download a trial of this and play around it with it. http://www.imagenomic.com/pt.aspx

Monitor colors are always troublesome. Unless you pick up certain high LCD monitors, or you are using a Mac (which include high end LCD displays as a standard feature), you are never going to get a super accurate representation. Laptop displays in particular are usually pretty bad for this. Even if you have a good display, you won't really know what you are getting unless you calibrate it. It's AMAZING the variations I see from monitor to monitor. Looks fine when you are using it, hell, you get so used to it you never notice the color differences... but line 3 monitors up side by side, put the same photo up on all three of them, and your jaw will hit the floor.

Further complicating the color issue is that of color spaces and where the image will be displayed. If you open an image in photoshop, PS will give you by default an accurate view of the images color in that working space. BUT if you save the image and open it on the same computer in your web browser or the windows image previewer, you'll probably see a completely different set of colors, because those programs are operating in a different color space then the one you might have used when you edited the image in PS. I'm afraid that I am not qualified to give a good tutorial on color spaces, you'll have to look that one up later on.

There ya go! my spyder has served me well over the years. For super accurate color you're supposed to recalibrate every few weeks, but every 2-4 months is generally "close enough for government work" :tu

only other thing to consider is knowing your monitor's responsiveness to whites and blacks. Some monitors lose their flexibility in those ranges, so for example, everything 92% up to 100% white will simply show as white. All the calibrating in the world wont fix that, all you can do is know your monitor and how well it responds. (take a photo and make it really bright, then compare it on your monitor and any friend with a high end calibrated display. That's how you can figure out the difference). My laptop is HORRID at this... I avoid any kind of photo processing on it because everything looks blown out, even though it's not.

ABSOLUTELY!!!!!

CS4 was worth the upgrade solely for the newer Adobe Camera Raw in Bridge. When I Was doing weddings, 95% of my work was done in bridge, and the ACR upgrades were epic!

Now that I'm back to editing individual photos in Photoshop, CS5 intelligent fill feature will be epic, and I could care less about any ACR upgrades.

That sounds pretty cool - I recently downsized from a big case (relative term) with a larger plastic holder, and now have just a slim soft case. The leather holder concept sounds like it would work well for a lot of backpacks that have started putting the little camera pockets on the waist straps.

I meant to respond to this, but never got around to it. I wouldn't plug it into my camera, but it would be perfect for Off-Camera flash. The Sunpack 555's are pretty powerful and all you would need is a wireless transmitter and a wireless receiver. Granted, those aren't extremely cheap, and definitely not free, but it's well worth it, imo.

Just a 12"x12"x12" cardboard box with three sides cut out and tracing paper glued to cover the sides. I lay it down so the box is open at one end and the left, right and top are the open sides. I have a posterboard inside the box curving up the back so I get the seamless background look. Two work lights with CFL's lit this one and that's it. It cost me ~$20 including the posterboards, tracing paper, lights and bulbs and took about an hour to set up.

Moving from ~50mm to ~75mm with your crop sensor isnt worth the hundred bucks IMO. I say go from something like the 80mm F2.8 with a crop around 120mm.

Thats my next route and the 50 1.8 will be deligated to my N80 for film use.
Plus the 50 1.8 wont auto focus on your D40. Unless there you go with the 50mm 1.4G for 4X the price. But it stops down more.

It uses a manual screw drive to focus. There is a little slot in the lens where on older film bodies used to have a rotating flat head that would control the auto focus.

It does not have an internal motor. Like most of the (DX series especially) lenses do these days

I wouldn't do it. There are compromises when you have zoom lenses of any length and with the super zooms, there is a lot of compromising you'll have to do in terms of image quality in exchange for the convenience of the lens. I shoot primarily primes, my kit contains 30mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.8 and 10-22mm zoom and my next lens will probably be a prime in the 135mm range. The IQ you get from primes is significantly better than most zooms, unless you shell out the dough for more expensive professional quality glass. I like having the wider apertures too which you would lose in the superzoom.

what everyone else said, especially with the perspective. I NEVER use my 50mm 1.8, but you'll have to pry my 85mm 1.8 out of my cold, dead hands! 50mm on a crop body just doesnt feel right. Although oddly enough, even with my current 5D,s 50mm still doesnt feel right.....

The 18-200mm is a walk around lens in the way that is covers most focal lengths. You wouldn't have co change lenses while on a hike or walk or something. But there while offering an excellent range you sacrifice details and the distortion of the lens becomes annoying at times. The variable aperture is what kills iit for me. You might as well spend that 700$ on the 85.

We've had this discussion before on this psrticular lens and it is a story of comprimises. It isn't as sharp at the 70-200 but you won't miss any shots changing lenses. Even so IMO you won't notice the unsharpness unless a. You are looking for it or b. You are printing very large. Everyone has their own thoughts.

I need help from my fellow photographers in choosing my next lens purchase. I know may of you shoot canon and your input is still much appreciated.

Let me tell you what I shoot. I find myself working in tight spaces most of the time. Landscapes and wild life make up the majority of my photography although i see doors opening towards portraiture and cityscapes. Trees capture my interest more often than not.

I currently have

28mm f2.8
35mm f1.8
50mm f1.8
18-55 f3.5-5.6
55-200 F4.5-5.6

Lenses Im looking into are

Tokina 11-16 f2.8
Nikon 12-24 f4
Nikon 85mm f3.5 macro
Nikon 105mm f2.8 macro

Depends on the lens. Some 3rd party lenses are as good or better than their equivalents, others not so much. Tokina 11-16 is much loved by Canon crop shooters because no fast equivalent exists from Canon. Also newer sigma lenses compare very favorably to Canon's offerings. However, I can't speak directly to Nikon since I don't have personal experience with their lenses. I will say though, 3rd party lenses seem to be getting better and better, and you should be afraid of them just because they aren't Nikon/Canon, etc. I'm sure no one would reject Leica/Zeiss glass merely because it's a 3rd party lens.

Wolfgang
06-01-2010, 02:07 PM
If I could get a zeiss for 300 dollars less then on brand that wouldn't be an issue and their lenses have a far better track reccord than some of the other 3rd parties. The sigma 50mm1.4 is presst sweet too. Think ill go with the Tokina from adorama there have been too many positive reviews to be wrong. Only thing I think will bother me is the limited zoom. We'll see.

Brutus2600
06-01-2010, 02:10 PM
I know that the Tokina lenses I've looked at for my Nikon range from crap on their low end, to some really nice lenses on the high end. All three of those Nikon lenses you listed are very nice lenses. The only reason I would go with the Tokina wide angle over the Nikon wide angle is the lower aperature.

A website that has always been my favorite to see comparisons of lenses is http://www.dpreview.com/ and specifically their Nikon SLR lens discussion page (http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1030).

Just doing a quick search for the Tokina 11-16 yielded these two interesting threads with some picture examples:

Thread 1 w/ pictures (http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1030&message=35356868&changemode=1)

Thread 2 (http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1030&message=35397487&changemode=1)

Edit: As noted in one of those threads, with the Tokina lens you're basically getting a lens that will perform at about 95% of the picture quality as the Nikon, but for $300 cheaper. Worth it in my opinion.

I've had mixed results. I currently have a sigma 14mm 2.8 aspherical that I love. I had a few Sigma tele zooms before it that I hated. BUT the key factors are WHY I hated em, and if that applies to you.

At the time I was doing journalism, sports, and a few weddings. FAST AF was critical, and the Sigma HSM couldn't hold a candle to the AF speed of my my other Canon USM lenses. ALSO, Sigma lenses rotate the opposite direction to zoom in and out from Canon lenses, which is a pain in the ass if you're a canon shooter, and totally cool if you're a Nikon shooter!

I stopped being a "pixel peeper" long ago. Add in a little post sharpening and the viewer will NEVER know the difference. (
(obviously it has to be decent, that doesn't mean a kit lens will get the job done!!! but I agree that 95% is "close enough".)

I wasn't refering to lens distortion, I was referring to perspective issues which are affected by the camera's distance relative to the subject, which is a different issue. The reason a headshot done with a wide angle lens will make the nose appear abnormally large is because of it's closer distance to the sensor relative to the rest of the face. Compression which occurs when the distance to the subject is greater can have a pleasing effect on the face in portraiture. This is not to say wide angle portraits can't be done, but just to make people aware of another consideration in doing so.

It will take some time to get the hang of it. Photoshop is very complex, and there are dozens of different ways to accomplish each and every step I listed there. Some ways are better than others in certain situations. Everyone's workflow is different, .
This is very true. I have been working in Photoshop (at work) for 25 years.
When I watch some tutorials or read people's suggestions-instructions, I often think,
"WHAT??" WTF is he talking about, the WHAT tool?" That's the beauty of Photoshop.
You do with it what you need to do with it and very little else. It's a thousand
different programs in that way. Things exist in there that I have no clue about,
cause I don't use them in my work. That said, I am as fast as anyone in Photoshop
and can produce great work.
My way, lol.

Same story for me. Learned PS as a kid (still am a kid I guess), thought I knew it... then went to work for a newspaper, learned a different set of stuff.... then went to work for myself doing weddings, learned another set of techniques. I'm pretty good in PS, so that means I know 5% of the program. The really good people know 10% of it :tg

DxO will still fix it. Perspective issues like nose bulging is still distortion.

Yes, but it is the specific type of distortion that matters. Can it be fixed in photoshop? Sometimes, but it depends on the quality of the distortion: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perspective_distortion_(photography)
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=672913

Pincushioning and Barrel distortion are easily corrected and are usually corrected. Compression and perspective distortion caused by focal length are different and cannot be as easily adapted in post processing. Now I'm not familiar with DxO, so I'm not sure of it's capabilities, but I still think it would be difficult to change the relative sizes of background items based on the focal length of the lens, though I haven't tried so it might be easier than I think.

Wolfgang

DxO has separate modules that you have to download for each different camera body and lens. Where it reads the meta data and has the algorithms to stretch the picture for pincushion, barrel, fisheye, perspective, chromatic aberration, and color.

As mentioned earlier in the thread my Sister asked me to take her pictures and I thought I would throw up one of the better ones. Might post more. The original is considerably sharper but you get the idea.
Both the bride and the groom were very pleased and in there words "Your pictures are better than many of the pictures from the pro's that sent us examples" I took about 1000 pics and narrowed it down to about 200 good ones. Many were dups of the same scene to ensure that I got a good one.

It was esentially a non stop 7 hours or so. I did stop to eat (15-20 Mins) and there was a little wait time (20 mins appx) for her to get ready. I noticed that alot of it was not just the technical aspect (taking a properly exposed and composed shot) but the personable aspect, that is getting them to smile and getting there attention so I could take a good picture.

Don't plug it in via hot shoe but you can use a PC chord easy peasy. That is how we do with our cameras that we use to shoot graduations. It does mean you have to control the flash manually, but those flashes won't talk to your camera anyway, so you are in manual regardless.

Just upgraded to a Canon 5D MkI and 50mm F2.8 Macro. We will see how this ful frame thing stands up to most popular belief.

I also Ordered the Tokina 11-16 F2.8 for my Nikon setup. Who is ready for some super wide angles?

My buddy has a full frame Nikon D30 (I think) and he lets me use it frequently. I know it's apples to oranges comparing my T1i to it but it is clearly a significantly better camera.

DxO has separate modules that you have to download for each different camera body and lens. Where it reads the meta data and has the algorithms to stretch the picture for pincushion, barrel, fisheye, perspective, chromatic aberration, and color.
