Holy crap J-dawg, everything must GO, huh? You sound like me almost, I have a two sheet long sales
sheet hanging in the bathrooms here with all of my old DSLR bodies for sale, each with a lens,
battery and charger. I ain't gettin much action, lol.

Havent taken many pics lately. I figure the G1x will be the perfect travel camera. Almost an APS-C sensor, full manual controls, and it still shoots RAW.

Yeah I was sorry to hear about your cat dying.........................:D

But seriously folks, I can see making the switch. Outside of showing people that your camera has a big lens
or that your camera is bigger than their camera, there is no reason to saddle yourself to a full rig, unless
you have to compromise on the sensor.

Only real compromises with the g1x are af speed and the zoom range is only 28-112mm

Great Blue Heron. Normally they fly away at the first sign of human activity. Luckily the 70-200 lens was already on the camera in my bag.

Sad commentary on the condition of many rivers, especially in urban areas. If you look closely, that's a shopping cart it's standing on.

This was shot with the 50mm 1.8G also. I am liking this lens a lot, especially since it pretty much sits in the camera bag, unused. Don't know why.

I went to NOLA this weekend and wandered the quarter at night as usual. NOT my best trip, I had a guest with me and I went the speed they wanted to go, bypassed hundreds of things I wanted to shoot, and due to LSU starting at 2:30, left WAY before I usually do at 8:30. But NONE of that will hold me back from shooting at least one great one.....and now I give you that great shot, lol...

Awesome! I looked at the EXIF info, and you were shooting ISO 5000? How clear are the photos with the D700 without Photoshop with this camera?

OLS
10-14-2013, 06:51 PM
Ron, I never mess with noise unless it is obvious, because it really takes so much away from the photo.
It is very likely that this photo is basically SOOC with only the signature added. I can't swear to that,
but this is all the superior imaging of the D700. That is why I want another one. The only reason I have not
worked hard to get another one so far is that I kind of went SO FAR down the road of owning all those other
cameras, that if I got another D700, that is all I would take anywhere. I am not a fool for buying D90s and D200s,
but I would be a fool if I bought them and did not use them. So I wait for the prices to go down, and when they do
I will pick up another one or two. But these things just shoot and shoot in the dark. And of course, 5000 is high ISO,
but not even close to half of what it WILL DO. But I don't like to push it at all unless I just have to. It was a real juggling
act to balance ISO, F/stop and shutter speed to keep everything right. There is noise in the photo, it is just subtle.
And as you can see, this streetlamp is bathing the area with usable light. What is remarkable to me is not the ISO/noise,
but the LENS, 24mm at 2.8, is WIDE OPEN, and is doing a pretty decent job of being sharp. Way more depth of field than
I thought I could get wide open, I guess because it is a true wide angle lens on this full frame camera.

emopunker2004
10-14-2013, 07:45 PM
Ron, the d700 is an fx camera. Typically a full frame will exhibit sofnificantly less noise at a given iso compared to a crop sensor camera of the same time period. Just go back and look at my Canond 6d images at 12,800 iso

shark
10-15-2013, 04:37 PM
Guess I need to save my money then because I like what I see with full frame equipment!

OLS
10-16-2013, 11:08 AM
I hate to say it, Ron, but according to Justin, I would have two D700s now, just what I REALLY WANT, if I had not
bought all those crappy OLD Nikons. He was right then and he is right now. But I like my D90, I just can't use if for
everything I want to use it for. TRUTH be told, I could have gotten the same shot with a D90 in that spot. No more
noise than what you see there. But that IS about the limit. Reasonable ISO, plenty of practice to find out JUST HOW
SLOW a shutter speed you can hand hold, and PERFECT exposure. Low or high exposure tends to magnify amp noise.

Spent a second weekend in a row in NOLA, this time by myself, wherein I get much better results. But Ron, the

I am looking for something mid level, something that I will not grow out of in a year or two like your standard point and shoots, something that will take good pictures, wifi connected or something that has the option for a wifi adapter, I would think high mega pixels would be key but not sure and honestly it doesn't have to shoot video Although I guess that would be a bonus. Looking to spend around $500 but that is negotiable can be less or more if needed.

Any help would greatly be appreciated...I will try and check this page every day but if it's something I really shouldn't miss out on please PM me!

Thanks,
Taki

Are you looking for DSLR or what? I recently got a Canon G1x and it's great. It's got a sensor almost as big as a crop dslr. They can be had used for $500 and less.

I would say yes on the DSLR, is there any good spots to find a used one? It's been probably since college (6-8 yrs) since I used an actual camera so the terminology I'm not up to date on. After doing some initial research, I hear Canon is a very reliable name and brand (I do like their products had one in the past) but I also hear they are very easy to use and work which would be good because my wife is very technically challenged.

I had some cash put away for a trip that happened without me, and the money was burning a hole in my pocket :D
My wife is out every day taking pictures.I think this Cannon is just what she needs?
The hard part is to keep it stashed away until Christmas.

What are some good lenses for cigar photography? If I am lucky something I can also use other generic shooting.

Look for something that can clearly focus to a point as close to the subject as possible. For a good close-up, you need a lens that lets you focus clearly as close to the subject as possible. Personally I like a lens that can get down to under a foot away from the subject for this purpose. A smaller focal length lens, say 50mm or less that is designed to be a macro lens should work.

Also, taking great shots takes patience and quite a bit of practice. When I'm out shooting my eyes are everywhere; I'm looking at everyone and everything and judging whether or not, based on experience, if this scene or that one would make a worthwhile photo.

I'll say one thing about it Ron, I rotate those cameras and take a lot of pictures with those ole hunks of junk. :D
I tried to stay true to the idea that I can do anything with any one of em if I play by the rules. Low light
is the only time I ever feel a little trapped by the body I take somewhere, but I also have the lenses now
to get me out of trouble. My brain and my impatience are the only things that hold me back.

IMO not too much editing needed. I use Photoshop Elements, which is kinda like a "Photoshop Light" without all of the bells and whistles of Photoshop CS. Maybe a little tweaking with contrast and levels to bring the colors out a little more. IMHO, the light post is a bit distracting, as is the stop sign. Just my opinion, of course. :)

I love that car! When I was a kid of around 10 or 11, a good friend of my parents, who had worked in the NY garment business and been a hand model in her youth, had one under a cover in her garage. A more concise answer is that I started backwards.....I knew I wanted a D700 a long time ago,
but it was too pricey. I bought a D70 and a D100. I traded for a D100 with some cigars
from my end. I saw a number of D200s with defects I did not consider to be deal-breakers,
and bought every one cheaper than I feel was a fair price. Before you know it, I had jumped on so
many markdowns that I have a full closet of old Nikons....why? Wanna buy one? Cause I will make you
a hell of a deal.

Like I told Shark earlier, NOT A SINGLE ONE of my cameras is incapable of taking a great photo.
But you can ask Shark, having a capable camera on hand is not always quite enough to deter
the demons of our own minds. You want newer, better, more low-light capability, the ability
to use legacy lenses. One by one factors come in to play that force you to look at something higher
up the food chain. But if you just wanted to take photos for pleasure, and not for sale as prints,
any camera will do you right. The deal with multiples, on my end, was that all of my cameras can utilize
the same batteries. Why not pick up a cheap D200 when you see it? I bought a D90 that had a flash
that would not stay locked and seated. Gaffer's tape.....saved $150, gave it to my sister.

you don't need to keep looking for that elusive 'better camera'....that's a fine shot right there.
Take it from someone who shoots 400 shots like this a week, and rarely comes home with one that good.

Just a few nights ago I forgot the flash was up on my D90, and I stuffed it into my camera bag. Long story short, I got home, noticed that it was jammed up, so I gently put the flash thingy back into place....now the flash will not work AT ALL. SH*&!!!! Careless on my part, now I broke the damned flash. Even with the flash in the up position, the camera doesn't read that it's up, so it must be some kind of sensor or something.

Hey, stranger!!!! how's it going? Good, I hope.

Yeah, its good, now that the giant Go-Kart race is over. I swear, we had someone from every
state this side of the Rockies it seemed. hundreds from Michigan, Iowa, South and North Dakota,
Minnesota, Wisconsin, Kansas, just everywhere imaginable. All in lil ole Mississippi for Thanksgiving.

Took a few shots of karts on the track, but I just formatted the card the other day to take shots of
a guy's Eleanor the other day. Took one pic and the 2 GB card said it was full. I only had about
8 karting shots on the card, so it must have been some movies on there.

These were shot with a little compact 'pro' Nikon P6000, picked it up for $40 the other day at Ado.
Not too great, but good in a pinch...he is trying to sell this, his third straight 'identical' car. He seems

I saw a bone stock original blue GT500 at a car show once, all the way down to the original paint. Sure it looked a little worn, the paint wasn't shiny and all, but everything original except for normal rubber items that deteriorate over time like hoses, belts, tires, brake lines at the wheels, etc., but I'd buy that one over something that has been modified any day

Ah-haha...I mean Ho, Ho, Ho.....I do NOT know you, but I KNOW YOU too well.

LONG night last night, steady rain, cold temps, and three gigs in two different parts of town to shoot.
Granted, no one is paying me, I do it for fun and to get better at this. But I owed my friend Nick Black,
so I put on the long johns and the leather jacket and went out to face the shuttle...

Man THIS CAT could PLAY THE BLUES! What a sound. Good REAL blues, not that modern crap.
Terrible night, GREAT results/

I guess I have shot SO MUCH flashless stuff over the short year I have been taking photos that I just can't
get into flash shots. I like the one without the flash best, no matter how you describe it's faults I can't see.
When I shoot bands, invariably there is someone there with a speedlight, popping off shots in the band's eyes.
None have ever told me that my shots would be better, or I would have a better shot to 5hit ratio if I would use a
flash, but I think they must feel like they want to. I like the quality a natural light shot has so much more than
whatever I might get with a flash. Sometimes my colors suffer greatly, but I don't think I will ever use my speedlight
until I HAVE TO, like at a wedding or somewhere. ALthough your shots DID make me consider painting eye
'catchlight' in in Photoshop when necessary. That is the only part of shot 2 I wish could be a part of shot 1.
The first shot captures your daughter's beauty SO much better.

I have never had anyone say it, but I think bands and audiences much appreciate it when I do not use my
flash. Bands have to be used to it if they want to play gigs, but I think audiences are much distracted by it.

Thanks Brad, and I agree with you about flash use. I haven't had mine long and I just can't seem to get the hang of it. The reason I made the first into a B&W is because it was so yellow from the crappy light in the hallway that I had no choice. Well, to my knowledge and effectiveness with LR. But I think she looks good in B&W.

One thing for sure, I have had mine for a few months and ONLY ever tested it. Not sure how much of a fight
its going to put up, and I wish I had a better way to test it. I only bought it because I thought it could also
operate as a slave off to the side somewhere that I could trigger with my pop-up. Turns out it ONLY functions
as a on-camera speedlight, since it is a knockoff Bower. But at least I am only out 45 bucks and IT IS a large,
shoe-mount flash. But I sure wasn't trying to criticize your TECHNIQUE, and I think that's what I read back.
I just wanted to express my love for natural light. But since you are lucky enough to have a captive model,
keep on practicing. I might do that at Christmas.

I didn't take it as criticism at all Brad, if anything I need a lot of it. This speedlite just puts off SO much light and I'm still trying to get the settings on it figured out. Between the camera flash settings and settings on the speedlite itself, I'm kinda just testing and finding my way as I go. I need to just take some time, and shoot with it over and over again until I start to figure it out. I shy away from using it since it seems to be too much most of the time.

Feel free to lend any advice you have ANY time. I love your photos and always welcome input from good photogs. :tu

Not sure if you have a camera brand or an also ran brand, but I know that there are some brands of knockoffs that
allow the camera to regulate it's power based on the initial metering, but I do not know how well it works since my own
cheapie has not been well tested. I DO KNOW that you might want to look into popping a styrofoam cup onto it or
some other form of cheapie diffusion, and of course bouncing it under the conditions you seemed to be working with
would be best, whether vertical or sideways. I wish I could be more helpful and also that there were REGULAR posters
here that could steer you. But of course, our old place seems to be a bit of a ghost town, eh? I am taking mine
on the road this weekend to see if I can make some nieces and nephews sit patiently while I blunder my way
through it. We'll see how it goes.

that I want to buy another camera, lol, but I really want another D700. But for half the cost I can get my first D7000.
As some of you know, my reason for preferring the D700 is it is a GREAT old camera, and all my batteries for my vast
collection, lol, FIT the D700. Introducing the D7000 would toss a bit of a wrench into the hopper. But it is a VERY
capable and modern camera. Not sure I will HEED advice, but I am certainly asking for some. What would YOU DO?

Yeah that closeup of the horse statue was with my 70-210 telephoto. Although it seems finicky with metering (always seems to open the f-stop to the max in Program mode) all I have to do is shoot in aperture priority with it. And it does take nice, sharp pics. And, I was surprised at the lower light photos, too.

HEY, I realize that this is QUITE a step back for most people, but I saw a really good deal today that I wanted to share.

http://www.adorama.com/US%20%20%20%20613059.html

The D70s is KIND of a relic, but highly capable, to be sure. The reason this is a deal is that it is 90% off of it's release price
but also about 50% off of it's current used list price. All for a power switch that won't turn the camera off. The reason this
is a good deal is that the Nikon DSLR BATTERY does NOT discharge when you leave the camera turned on. You could turn it on,
put the camera in a bag and leave it in a closet for a year and then pop it out and shoot some shots, you might not have the same
battery level, but it will not drain in a week. The only thing that makes the power switch somewhat useful is that I do not like
to change lenses with the power on, but I have certainly done it before, to no apparent harm done. You could pop out the battery,
change the lens, and pop it back in. To be able to get a D70s for $75 and KNOW that the issue that has it discounted so deeply is so
irrelevant is a pretty good deal.

Need a cheap auto-focus zoom lens to go with it??? http://www.adorama.com/US%20%20%20%20542610.html In and out for about $100.

Get a compact flash memory card, too while you are at it, 4GB is likely the ceiling on size. http://www.adorama.com/IDS4GBUC25R.html

If you are asking why I DID NOT BUY IT, well, I can't keep buying close-outs forever. I just had to give away 4 of them at Christmas.

I'm trying to be good and not spend more money! Someone at work left a print catalog from B&H in the break room at work, and I saw that they had some used Nikon d7000 and d7100 listed, so I went online and found a used d7000 in number nine condition (probably similar to Adorma's E or E+ classification?) for about $570... Must resist!!!

emopunker2004
01-10-2014, 11:47 PM
Well for 659 u can get a NIB d7000

OLS
01-11-2014, 11:29 AM
My first advice to you Ron is NEVER buy used gear from B&H. They may be to the penny the same as Adorama on new gear,
but on used they are 15-25% higher across the board. I don't know about YOU, but I NEED that extra money. I used to be a
huge advocate for B&H, and I still love em, but on used, they can't TOUCH Adorama.

SECOND, unless you need the low light capability that a D7000 brings, you don't need to upgrade. Image quality is close
to the same, and yet noticeably better...but perhaps not worth 6oo bucks. I just picked up a D7000 for $569 because my
spare NEEDS to be able to do 3200 standing on it's head and 6400 in a pinch. I don't like pushing a D90 past 1600 under
any circumstances, and I am not a fan of images over 1200. They blow out the colors and bloom something fierce. And
I tend to agree with Justin, a New unit is only a hundred bucks more, although I needed that hundred and went "E" grade.
It has 1400 shutter actuations on it. IT IS A NICE CAMERA, but I use it for my small bidness. For pleasure, a D90 is still
a great camera. Save up for that D700 when they break below $1000 this summer or $900 in the holiday season. I swear
in 10 years that D700 is still going to be a camera to recon with. A true classic.

Problem with that logic is that a kid just getting started in Photography would not know that you can
leave a Nikon powered up without draining the battery. BUT I DID leave it be. Someone got it the same day,
but the important thing is it WAS NOT ME!

As far as the camera body, you at least know if you do not get a body out of the offer,
you can find a great old body for $40-50. Hope the lenses are great. Back in olden tymes,

Argh, I am going through it again. I want to buy a N90s, but every time I go through the arguments for and against,
I keep coming back to the fact that I am printing at home with good results, and I can't get past the fact that just to
PRINT a large copy of one of my film shots, I have to develop the film first. Takes all the fun out of it and puts a lot
of expense into the equation. I know some people will say, Takes the FUN out of it? Are you SERIOUS? It puts the
fun BACK IN!" But not to me. I used to have fun in the service, where we had access to a darkroom and enlarger, etc.
But to even think of any of that now is just crazy to me.

Being able to get an EXCELLENT film camera for under $50, and having all the lenses I need is a great feeling.
But it just seems insane to spend a lot of money on film and processing after the investment I have in printer
and paper stock. Sad, really. I think it would be cool.

Ehhh, got a 50mm1.8 D Nikkor in today, and it had a grindy focus throw. It was 60 bucks, not cheap, but not bad
for this lens. It did not STATE that it was grindy, but I found it that way when I got it in. Generally, I would just
box it back up, spec the problem for them and get my money back. But I have wanted to disassemble one of these
for some time. So I did. Looks like it has been to Destin. Lots of bits of sugar white sand in there. It is in the
helicoids, so if I want to really fix it I am going to need to COMPLETELY disassemble it. Rather than take a $60 lens
and turn it into a pile of worthless bits and pieces, I went ahead and assembled it back to where I started. Got a lot
of grit out of it, but now the spot JUST before infinity is almost a dead stop, so I am gonna have to work out whether
or not I want to take it apart again later under better light with better eyeglasses. I have some lithium grease that I can
use on the helicoids, but man, I am not sure I want to go ALL THE WAY on this one.

shark
01-14-2014, 04:49 PM
You'd think that someone would be more careful to not get sand in there.

OLS
01-15-2014, 10:01 AM
I was kind of bummed to see it, but I could tell that when I moved the focus ring, it felt like sand for some reason.
In my brain's little eye, anyway. It focuses fine throughout it's range though, and it is already claimed by a guy
at work, so it all turned out well enough.

On my other rant, about FILM cameras, I forgot about a little something I have in a drawer. I need to see what
kind of shots spew forth from this old Argus C3 I picked up last year from my mother's 'everything must go' push
prior to her recent move. Not expecting much, but nostalgia and that it will expose film, hopefully only when I intend
for it to.

Justin, that Sigma Mini-Wide has held it's value well, for a Sigma lens. You can get em used for $60-100.
They are wildly popular, it and the Super-Wide 24mm. The E-series lens is a pretty good E-lens, one of the best
3 out of the whole line of about 8-9 lenses. Maybe top 2. I don't think the tele zoom is going to work out that well,
but it will do in a pinch. And the one I bought andshot with was used and had some issues inside. Their plastic
parts have a certain life before they loosen, warp, snap or otherwise go out of crisp focus. Still worth having in the
way you got it.

OK, I picked up a D7000 as a low-light spare, and a relief for my old D700. I wanted to get
a second D700, but the dang price just will not come down, and if anything, it goes UP and
over the Holidays, DOWN $100, and now back UP $100+. SO F that. When they drop below
$850 I might pick up a spare for posterity. But back to the D7000, I did NOT want another cropped-frame
camera in the bag, but with the low-light performance of this model, and what I have seen to be darn good
Image Quality, I went with a D7000 and was pretty pleased with the results. In a way it is going to replace my D700,
because it is OLD and tired and I want to make it last as long as I can. SO I will take the D7000 out alone many nights
and as a spare on nights when I want that extra pop of sensor size. I killed most of the images on my flash drive to
make room for some other stuff, so I only have one shot for now, but a guy can do a LOT worse than sexy lil Mallory.
This girl is the ultimate BEE. She flies from man-flower to man flower, I never see her with the same guy.
And if I looked as good as she does, I doubt I would be any different.

I've been thinking about starting a website for awhile now, over the holidays found a decent price on domain registry and website hosting. I'm definitely no web developer, not even close. But they have a good (to me) website builder and it made it pretty easy. Been slowly working on it for a month or so, it's pretty basic and nothing to write home about, but I'm hoping to expand it over time and not break the bank. :D

Thanks Brad. I'm pretty lazy myself. It took me a month to put that together and it's obviously nothing fancy. I was really just looking for a nicer place to display my stuff, not trying to sell anything yet, might down the road. Looking to buy a photo printer in a few months. Mainly to print stuff for myself, but if someone wanted to buy something, I'd have a way to print it off.
In other words, I really have no idea what I'm doing. :D

This is what I use and it kicks butt. You can load 13x19 in there and the quality is excellent.
I force the printer to let Photoshop handle the color and get great results.

If anyone likes to shoot photos in the dark, here is a FANTASTIC camera from Sony that was before it's time and
still holds up well all these years later. This thing has a laser matrix focusing system that allows you to focus in

Its a terrific camera and a damn good price....surprised to see it there for $50.

Another of my "in and out, cheap DSLRs, BUT" posts.
Spotted this today...
http://www.adorama.com/US%20%20%20%20618880.html
Its a Nikon D3100, which normally I would never recommend to anyone. The body has no built-in focus motor, so you
can only use it with AF-S lenses (unless you want to hand-focus). It MOUNTS em all. The issue that has this
$250-$300 used camera on sale for $50 is that it "will not read SD cards - Card will not lock in slot." Hogwash.
We have all used modern SD card-using cameras, where you push the card down, and there is a locking, spring-
loaded system that keeps the card in the camera, and ejects it when you need to take out the card. But sometimes
the mechanism sproings and the card will not lock in. It will not READ the card, because the card cannot be pushed
down far enough, because the spring does not have a locking position anymore, its just like a little trampoline, and it keeps
the contacts achingly close to the camera contacts, but won't touch.

HOWEVER, if you roll up a piece of duct tape sticky side out and sit it on top of the SD card, you can close the door,
and the pressure of the door down on the card keeps it in contact with the contacts in the camera. And the ingenious
Nikon SD card doors feature a double-action mechanism that first presses DOWN on the card, then slides in grooves into
a closed AND locked position, so the duct tape does not force the door open and ruin the quick fix I use. The light springiness
of the tube of duct tape gives you cushion that protects the card from being crushed by the door. More or less tape may
be required to make everything Happy. BUT MAKE NO MISTAKE, this camera is probably perfectly fine.

Trouble is, an X condition camera (for parts only) is not sold with a battery and charger, I guess they take those and
sell them used separately. SO you would need to buy this (http://www.adorama.com/IBYPT63.html) and THIS (http://www.adorama.com/NLRPL1U50.html) to have it work as a total package.
So for 88 bucks, you have a entry level Nikon DSLR that shoots 1080 p video and a 14 megapixel sensor
and a large LCD screen. I was going to buy it, but I have a rule about bodies....NEVER buy a Nikon body that does
not have a focus motor built in... because I only have two lenses that work with these cameras, and they are not
available very cheaply, even used. I like a Nikon body I can use with any 1986 and above lens. I was even going to
buy it to SELL, but it is not a good idea to try and SELL a work-around camera to someone who is not as practical as
I am. But for a person who buys it for themselves or a loved one, it seems perfectly nice, since you do not need to
make a profit to make it worth your while. And believe me, my fix is GONNA WORK.

But IF my theory, which has worked already with TWO D50s that had this issue, (both work fine today) then you can
ALWAYS SEND IT BACK FOR A FULL REFUND WITHIN 30 DAYS, NO QUESTIONS ASKED. Cause Adorama is the $HI+.

$88....Not bad for a 2010 DSLR. Entry level or not. Well, of course you would need a lens to mount. AF-S works best.
