We both know they are crappy, but the subject matter is cool. I never expected to see that in
the middle of the MS river that that time of the morning, although cruise ships are a common sight there.
If I had intended to ever be able to use it, exposure compensation would have been a good idea.
But I wanted the sun more than the ship, so I made a choice, lol.

Yeah that is some tricky lighting! Sort of a conundrum, you meter to the sunrise, and the ship is underexposed, meter to the ship, and everything else is washed out. Do an average, and you don't get much better. Personally I think that they're not too bad, kind of a silhouette effect going on there.

Wow, you guys have been busy. I was gone all weekend, Chimping on the way home it looked like I had finally
had a mistake free trip to NO to shoot pics, but apparently the Nikkor 24-50mm lens I got second hand from BH
for way too much money is a POS. I put it on my best camera and wasted a day with it. The D200 that I saddled
last weekend with the loser lens was stellar with the 18-55mm this weekend. That lens continues to impress me,
being a kitter and all.

But every shot I took with the 24-50mm seems to be messed up in some way. At least this is the second
time I am going to put it away for being shite, the last time I apparently didn't learn my lesson. I have now.
Nice shots Ron.

It almost looks like it could be, the diagonal distracting lines, the odd depth of field...
It ISN'T, but it looks like it, I guess. It's the shade kind of lining up with the reflections
that must be doing it. All the squirrels were sprawled out in the sun, the park was still
too shady to be warm for them. This was a COLD day in May.

I had an odd thing happen this weekend. I was in NO on Saturday, got up Sunday and rode the plantation circuit
at least on the West Bank of the river. This boat, the Queen of the Mississippi, is based in Memphis, which is why
all of her passengers complain about the service and the food. But I digress. I shot a photo of it unknowingly
on Saturday morning around 4:30 am as it was docked in New Orleans. I didn't see it, but its in the night photos.

But I go down to Oak Alley Plantation, where the opening scenes from Interview with the Vampire are shot,
before Brad Pitt is turned, and he comes over the levee and rides his horse through the sugar cane. Ironically
there is sugar cane nearly everywhere BUT that spot, since no cane grows on the levee EVER, and that is where
the producers wished to show the GRAND shot from the levee down to the big house. ANYWAY, when I drive up
on Oak Alley, I see cops, and my favorite parking spot is blocked off. Then I look and see that there is a riverboat
docked behind the levee. So I parked about 1/4 mile away and walked down the levee til I got HERE:

http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b611/CameraTestsPage/queenoftheMiss_zps418746b2.jpg (http://s1294.photobucket.com/user/CameraTestsPage/media/queenoftheMiss_zps418746b2.jpg.html)

As hideous a river boat as ever sailed, it's pretty plain to see.

.

OLS

From the top of the levee, I simply turned 180 degrees and saw THIS:

http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b611/CameraTestsPage/DSC_8949_zps883a9c17.jpg (http://s1294.photobucket.com/user/CameraTestsPage/media/DSC_8949_zps883a9c17.jpg.html)

If you are ever down that way, you should not only stop and see this from the road,
you should take the tour (or rather PAY to get access to the grounds). Now I do not
recommend paying for ANYTHING, but when you see the grounds of this plantation
you will BE AMAZED. This joint is spectacular. I did not pay, I shot from the levee
just fine. But I have gone with my sister and THEY toured it and I saw the pics, and
also meandered over to the gift shop to get a drink, and you can SEE a lot of it on that
walk. It will make you feel POOR. Coincidentally, the cops thought I was with the tour
trip off the boat, and they let me go right through the front gate, but I did not have even
the time to spare to walk back to the house. With people all over, its not worth it to me
anyway. They were really dealing with traffic and helping ole ladies cross the street, but
I know the drill, no one allowed in the front yard or near the main house who has not paid.

Make sure to visit my art blog to read about and see several other alleys of oaks that
people planted a few hundred years ago around my ole stomping grounds. I sure like the
fact that they took the time to do it. That entry will go up in the next few days.

This guy wouldn't get out from in front of my blue balls. I wanted to see the blue balls.
But his drunk passengers were either BROKE and trying to talk their way out of a fare
with an offer of a BJ, or were trying to understand how the cabbie arrived at the fare
perhaps thinking it was too much, or they were just drunk and stupid. Either way,
the cab WOULDN'T MOVE. I need my blue balls. I THINK this is the Westin? "THE W" anyway.

That's a concept I had to work through recently as well. My first response was an easy Pentax win.
But the more I thought about how huge the AE-1 was when it came out, the more I was led around
to that direction. It was the K-100 killer for sure. It was a battle for the top spot. If I was you,
I would go Canon, since that's what I know you want. If I was choosing on perfection, simplicity
and current price against the AE-1, I'd take the Pentax. Mostly I would hold onto what I had and not
try to buy more gear. Focus on making your gear work for you. You don't have crap, you have nice stuff.

Presidential Limos, from Reagan all the way back to FDR

The limo in the foreground was the same limo where Pres. Reagan was hustled into when Hinckley shot him, and the same limo that Pres. Ford took shelter in when Lynette (Squeakey) Fromme, of the Charles Manson gang, pointed a .45 at him.

All your old Nikon lenses will fit that, right?
Well, if you HAD any, I guess.

Another of my not quite golden nuggets here. This is the well-known Steamer Natchez
parked at the French Quarter dock with one of New Orleans only real iconic 'skyscrapers',
the International Trade Mart. If you watch JFK, the white-haired dude that Jim Garrison
takes to court to stand trial for conspiracy to ass the prez is said in the script to be the
"guy that owns the Trade Mart". That building behind the steamer is the Trade Mart.
It was the hub of Cental and South American trade through New Orleans. There used to
be a cool rotating bar at the top called The Rain Forest that we always tried to get into
when I was a kid, but walk through it and head to the elevator is all we ever dared to do.
The sun is glinting off of the most recognizable feature of the Aquarium of the Americas
there in the photo as well. This was another dawn photo of this area of town. Might go
back down again this weekend.

No the Nikons won't fit it. It takes minolta lenses. Came with a 50mm f/1.7 lens.
I need to send it to the local shop for a CLA. The mirror sometimes sticks up until I advance the film.

Tempted to take my show on the road this weekend, if the weather holds out in NO this weekend,
I think I will. Picked up a 24mm 2.8 manual focus AI lens and think it will be almost perfect for the light
I end up shooting on my late night trips. I think I should have gotten a faster lens, but it gets expensive
fast once you add WIDE to fast. I think my f/3.3 18-55mm does a decent job, but I take two cameras with me.
50mm f/1.8 ends up being a stovepipe at DX crop, and even the 35mm f/1.8 is too tight to do well in the quarter in
the early dawn and dark. So I needed a second, fast, wide alternative. It meters, so that's all I really insist on
in a old-time lens. I needed to test it tonight, hell I still have light, lemme go....

Not so easy on the D200, but the hardest thing to remember is to focus. When I am out
at 4 am shooting, it's sometimes hard to see the focus, and other times I have left AF lenses
helpless with my BODY on MF and me not even having taken the time to CHECK. I killed 80 pics
like this the other morning, PERFECT dawn and night lighting, wasted. I get so excited
to be on the scene like a fly on the wall, 'wow, look at that", "Wicked light over there",
I just sometimes forget to start right. So we'll see. I HAVE to go to Charlotte and help
my sister move in two weeks, so this weekend is a tough call. Not sure I want to be
driving SO much. Might not have a choice. New Orleans in the late spring and summer,
no es funno.

I don't think those frogs get any bigger than that. I have some pairs that breed in my pond in the back yard, and they
emerge from the pond like that and stay close to that size...I think. Very easy to step on. I ended up doing exactly what
I thought I would, took the beater drive and wore myself out. Came back and dumped all the shots into the computer,
separated wheat from chaff and then went to bed at 7:30 pm. Thought maybe I would sleep 6-8 hours and wake up
at some weird time overnight and get back to compositing pics. Woke up 12 hours later in time to catch Meet the Press.
at 9:00 am. So almost 12 hours in the bed. Trip was great, shooting was only OK. Just ran out of things I had to shoot,
too many trips I guess, and got plenty tired enough to leave one great idea for another trip. Walked a 5hit-ton. Stopped
at a campground on the way home that we used to go to a lot in Mississippi when I was a one digit age. Still looked almost
exactly the same. Smaller, obviously, as everything from your childhood is so much smaller than you can recall. Took a lot
of pics and walked another good bit over there. Over the weekend I guess I walked about ten miles....weekend,lol, during the
2o hours between 7pm friday and 4 pm Saturday that I spent driving to or shooting in NO. 8 hours total shoot time. 12 hour
riding time. Merciless, but fully engaging and fun.

Haven't had much time to dedicate to shooting. But I did finally get an IR filter for my 50mm 1.8. I'd love to convert my T2i to an IR camera, but my daughter will be using it for the next couple of years.

First shot I took with the filter

Infrared (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jeffcarroll01/8749948578/) by Jeff Carroll01 (http://www.flickr.com/people/jeffcarroll01/), on Flickr

It was a bad angle in relation to the sun, but it was getting late and I wanted to at least try it out.

Pulled a Justin today. I have a Nikon D70, but even when I snapped my cheapest lens on it, I still felt really bad about
my plan; to leave it in the car 24 hours a day and 365 days a year, extreme heat to bitter cold. And even though I
have three other cameras I like more, I felt bad about, if nothing more, leaving a good battery to die under those
conditions. So it was an easy decision when I saw a beat up, used D70 at Ado today for $99. I prefer to pay $75 for
a beater, its more fair that way, but I get another charger, another battery and a beater body for $99....I can leave
that one in the car without whining about it. And I may even sell the good D70 one day to my landlord.

So after telling the story, that's not ALL that Justin-ey, but don't we REALLY all know that he is gonna buy
another camera here in about a month or less? Don't we? I guess what I really pulled was a Brad.

The new Flickr sucks a55.
I tried to read EXIF data on one of my own files and I can't even do that
anymore. The page loads are egregiously slow, thumbnails won't load,
it puts way too much emphasis on what my contacts are posting, as if it
belonged right there in my face every time I visit the site. Nothing new
comes without effort, but this new iteration of FLICKR SUX.

I couldn't bear to think of my D70, with it's 1/500th of a sec flash sync speed getting wasted like that,
so when they flashed a $99 one in front of me, I had to have it. Then I decided to find the cheapest lens
I could get to throw in the trunk with it, and there was this $30 Tamron 28-200. SO now they are
together forever in the trunk. And after my second D200 arrives next week, I PROMISE I WILL BE DONE with

It has social networky feel to me.....and I can't stand it. I wish we could opt for the previous version!

Yeah, technically that's a waterfall. A man-made one. I wondered exactly how it was done until I saw it during a drought where the water was really low and not flowing over it. It's actually a dam, straight on one side but coming down in steps on the other to give it a natural look, using a lot of natural rock. it's part of a hydro-eletric generation system that Henry Ford had built at his mansion. In 1916. I mean in 1916 that was unheard of!

Great shot Brad! It reminded me that yesterday morning, I notice from the living room window something large walking in the gutter area in water runoff. I exited the front door and walked out to the street to get a better look. Turned out to be a nice size turtle (which we don't have around here). The shell must have been 7" in length. The only thing I could figure out is that one of the kids from the condo area about 1/4 mile from us snatched a turtle from the interior lake area, and released it up in our neck of the woods. Nonetheless, I placed it in a box and walked it back to the lake condo area. Found a nice part of the lake to release it and it took to the neighborhood asap:D

OUCH!
Win some, lose some, and I am still not sure where this one stands.
Picked up another D200 used from the Ado, and it's issue was supposed to be "dead pixels on sensor, USB transfer
image errors." Well if there is one thing I have found on Ado's used stuff, it's that you have to take what they say as
being slightly exaggerated, or sometimes likely the complaint of a person who wanted to 'justify' sending it back after
they bought it used in prior weeks. I could care less about USB transfer errors, I use a card reader and pop out the
flash card. The dead pixels?? Unless it is a 5hit-ton of em, no biggie, I have at least 7 that show up on high ISO or
long exposures on my original D200. I paint them out in Photoshop when I have to print a file. So I was ready for this
one's issues and the price was right.

So it comes in today and it is in showroom condition. So right there I am happy. I shoot a few shots in the office,
including a dark shot and a few plain field shots to expose the dead pixels. They may come in the same conditions
my other D200 shows them, but I can't find any in general shot circumstances. So I am doubly happy with the new
addition to my family of useless old bodies. But there WERE issues, one you should be aware of if you are planning
on buying any used bodies from Adorama. I have bought no less than 7 bodies from them over the past 2-3 months,
and in every case, they have "kept the original charger and sent me a crappy chinese wall charger and generic battery."
I wrap that in quotes because I THINK THEY ARE SELLING the chargers I should be getting and giving me these
chinese bits and pieces so they can claim to have included a battery and charger. But it smells like a scam to me.
But I cannot be sure obviously. But if you want a body from them, it might be a good idea to check what they plan
on sending you.

NOW the part that I actually posted for. All the above, sure, no problem. But I always check now, by posting
an out-of-the-camera image on flickr, the shutter count of all the cameras I buy, and while my original purchases
of D70s and D100s yielded a lot of low count cameras, my first D200 had 20k+ actuations and this new one has
SIXTY-NINE THOUSAND+ shutter actuations, lol. You talk about one foot in the grave. This one is a prime example
of people who save all their packaging and take uber-care of their cameras, all the while fundamentally wearing
them out inside. I imagine they get more for them when they sell. The camera LOOKS beautiful, but OUCH.......69,000+
shutter clicks.

I got actual Nikon brand chargers and batteries with mine, but no neck strap with the D90. No biggie. My D90 also has only about 27,000 shutter actions. Not bad!

I also do buy the cheapest cameras they offer, so I can use my same old charger for all my batteries, so its cool.
The next camera I get will be another battery type, a D700 I am aiming at. But in no hurry. Out of all the massive
dumba55 numbers of camera bodies I have now, they all take the same battery. So before I get another camera
that doesn't, it's gonna be a D700, but for now I am really happy with my pile of crap. I am really working it lately.

Justin I think you just found the best 'contest' to have....post up your best accident shots that you might not have shared
heretofore, mostly just because it was a mistake, but you always look at it and think, MAN, but for a focus issue or a framing
issue or some such, you never shared it. Let's go ahead and just make one mandate, that you start your post by saying,
basically, this one was a happy accident. You have a week. :) Although who would need it. We all know what our best
ALMOST pic is. Now, WHERE it is? That might take a week to resolve.

A helper". (someone to hold his diffuser, lol.)

Well another pleasant surprise in the discount rack....I picked up a 35-135mm AF lens a few weeks ago for $40.
It was a complement to my 135mm prime I picked up the same day for $25 which turned out to be an epic
buy in itself, SO CRISP and bright. But the 35-135mm had yet to see the light of day, so I took it on a walk
for photo-exercise last night and it was a great buy, too. Everything I saw, I was able to shoot. I am again,
not a fan of push pull zooms, but this lens was fun to shoot with and produced some decent pics, all of which
are at home, sorry. While the 135mm prime is manual focus only, this 35-135 is more modern, with autofocus
and a really nice macro capability that I also tested. I am really glad I found two good D200s for cheap, since
they meter seamlessly with all those old lenses. I still want that D700, but I have put it away for another week
at least. Cheap lenses do not need to be strapped to a full frame sensor, and if I can shoot with whatever I want
on a D200, and have a D90 for modern lenses, I still don't need to have a full frame camera show all the weaknesses
of my lenses.

OLS
06-04-2013, 05:39 PM
Resisted the urge almost all day, but in the end, I still had not bought a D700. I mean I went through it in my head
10 different ways, but it always came back to 'what you have is fine' which REALLY surprised me. I thought
I was surely gonna end the day 1300 dollars poorer. All the signs were pointing that way. Whew is all I can say.

It really all comes down to that miracle D90 that just HAPPENED to NOT have an actual autofocus issue. Finding it
where I did, for the $200 tag, and having the balls to say "oh well, I can always manually focus it" and place that
order it is the very root of my satiety.:D

I hate to say it but I finally had to break down myself. I had been buying all these lesser cameras, JUST like I did the
first time around, and NOT getting all that same money in a pile and just full-framing up. I had been monitoring the
situation, and with the D600 and D800 both having issues with consumers, I can tell the D700 is gonna be holding it's
value for some time. So I just got one. The cheapest one I could find, not a super smart idea, but that's the way
I think, apparently. I had convinced myself DX was fine, and it certainly IS...all my lenses were beginner material,
so DX was best and I managed to make it a better sitcho with the D90 and the D200s, I was making some good
photos with good resolution. I was ALMOST content. But I had been picking up a lot of 30-50 dollar manual focus
lenses, and I just let my mind get away rationalizing 5hit and 'fore long, I found it just too hard to keep saying no.
But now I am super-secret cash crackdown. I am just holding my breath on the shutter count. I already know

She will get tired of that one day......cats, too.......I'm tellin ya, you need to start
shooting plants, signs, rocks, stuff like that. You never see it coming, one day you are
happily married, and the next moment, there's a cast iron skillet full of Hamburger Helper
gettin winged at your head.

I got mine on Amazon for $1790....something close to that. I see they are now $1899 again. I know it was less than $1800, part of the reason why I jumped on it at the time. Of course when I go back and look at my order history, it only shows the order total. I bought a few other things at the time so it's hard to tell how much it actually was. :sh

There really are some amazing shots in this thread and while I don't have the kind of equipment you guys do or the talent, I do enjoy taking pictures. Mostly nature and landscape stuff.

Here's one from my anniversary trip to Oregon.

On second look, nvm looks like you might cut off the water fall hitting the standing water if you do that.

It's ok my wife doesn't now about the 6d. It's ok though. We have the setup that as long as the bills are paid its all good. She wouldn't understand me trying to explain the differences between cameras. She would have just given the smile and nod haha
