I am gonna take out the D100 tonight with the same lens and shoot all the same stuff.
I gotta figure this out. I love the color rendition of the D100, but it's meter does not
seem to be able to hold the D70's meter's hat. I still love the camera, though, I will likely
keep it til it disintegrates, it just FEELS good in the hand, and it is fast for a dinosaur.
And its only a body, after all.

Oh and Shark....if you think you might wanna try out this lens, you can get it here... (http://www.adorama.com/NK5018AFD.html)
Gray market means that you do not get a Nikon USA warranty, but Adorama will
warranty it for the same 1 year, so if you feel lucky like I do, its a STEAL. In this
case gray market does NOT MEAN fake.

Those are some nice test shots Brad. I picked up a 50mm 1.8 Canon and like shooting with it, but haven't gotten enough experience with aperture values. Understanding the theory and effectively putting that theory into practice involves much test shooting.

The shots that I posted a few days ago were from when I was playing around, however I should have shot in aperture priority mode to have a better handle on the outcome.

jeff, I agree that to be confident with the depth of field DOES take a ton of no-pressure practice, if for no
other reason than making all the mistakes. I knew I wanted to just hammer the blur, so I did what I said I did
earlier, opened it ALMOST wide open with just a bit of wiggle room to ensure that I did not suffer from 'wide-open
softness" syndrome. But what I found out was that I had TOO MUCH blur in most of the cases. Now, I DO have a
'depth of field preview' button on my camera which basically shows me through the lens what the depth of field
will be like under the current metering and settings, but I do not use it...I WILL though, now.

I went out tonight, but the wind was way up, so none of the flowers would really stay still. That presented
a lot of issues in itself. I found again that the D100 has metering issues, but I guess its like a Montecristo No.2,
when its ON, its fabulous. I got a little of both tonight. Great results and head-scratchers. When you
compare the two camera's results, you can see that the D100 seems to have better dynamic range.
granted I DID NOT make an attempt to set them up the same, like I should have. One could have
saturation set higher, there are a number of things that could be fundamentally different.
I need to check them both out tonight. ANYWAY, here are the same basic shots and some extras.

Here are a few others, simply because they were SO spectacular. These are the ones I see have such great
dynamic range displayed, in addition to the onion flowers and the dogwood flower above (note the leaves) in the post above.

In the yellow tulip, you can clearly see that I used way too much aperture for this particular shooting sitcho.
the DOF is so narrow, you can only see 1/4 of one petal in in the plane of focus. But since the LCD is SO TINY,
you can't really tell what you have and fix it on the scene. You have to wait to get home.

Yep, right around the limit of depth of field, with fluroescent light. I calibrated the white balance and the colers came out really nice. Kinda blurry at that one part where the bottle curves around, though at the bottom.

But you are testing and messing, and that's what counts here at the ole Photography Thread.
Round these parts we don't cotton to folks leavin' their cameras in a sack. We want ACTION, babay.

With that said, I am sorry that I left mine in the car after lunch. I wanted to shoot this new Little
Caesar's " Deep!Deep! dish pizza. It's more of a thick crust, with the ingredients you SHOULD be getting
on your hot and ready pizzas now but aren't. So for $3.00 more for a hot and ready, next time I will
pass. If the crust was thick and fried and greasy like Pizza Hut's, I would almost let it slide. ANd hey,
for $8.00, I GUESS its not BAD. But the deepest thing about this is the crust. I was drooling thinking
about this being like I consider a deep dish pizza to be. Not today.

Ehh, what the hell am I SAYING....just because I don't have MY camera in the bldg, THIS IS a
media department, I can't swing a dead cat without hitting a media tool. Cheapie lil Samsung
compact camera works good enough for this test.

You get a double pizza box, with 8 thick slices of pizza, you can tell by the pepperoni how big
they are in relative terms. The way they are cut, they even LOOK like a good deep dish pizza.
But that's as far as it goes. Once you bite it, you can peel pack the cheese a bit and see this
thing is 4/5 crust and 1/5 stuff. For $8.00, ehh, OK, maybe. But if you are expecting a meal in
a slice, it ain't happenin'.

A circ polarizer is NEVER a bad investment. However you need to be careful and check your images,
since they can really screw up the sky in wider angle shots. But if you keep an eye on your images
after you take them, you can determine if you should continue to shoot with it on or not. It is only
a problem in certain sitchos. It can cause dark streaks/swaths in the sky.

Man, I am torn. Weather in New Orleans is going to be good this weekend, but it also happens to be the
French Quarter Festival, and the main reason I was going back this weekend was to shoot during the early hours
of the morning when the light was good and there were not cars parked in every damn shot. But if its FQF weekend,
not only will there be cars and people everywhere, but stages and trash cans and cables and porta-potties.
I guess I will save myself for another weekend.

OLS

Also remember that when you shoot with it, and you turn that camera sideways without a second thought to shoot
that tall shot, that you circ polarizer will be turned off axis and the effect will go away, so you have to remember to
turn it 90 degrees. If there is one thing I have learned about amateur photography, its that its all so clear at home,
and when you get on the scene and start shooting, everything you wanted to remember just flies out the window, lol.
I imagine that its also easy for the pros to forget, but I bet its much less so. And there are no marks on it, you just
turn it til the colors bloom or the effect you see is the one you desire. They are cool but it is easy to forget you have
it mounted, and you may get home and see you forgot to turn it and all your pics in one direction look great, and all
the ones the other orientation are dull and colorless. 5HI+ happens.

[B]Nice flower shots Brad. Since the light levels were low, maybe a smidge of flash on the daffodil?

In a real life scenario, yes, it would be appropriate. In that case, as with the others, I was
really just shooting to test the lens. The D100 body tends to crush the blacks which is a nice
effect if you want it, but could be considered a con or a defect in design when looked at critically.
As a pro flower shot, you likely would not want it to be that dark overall.

This is also the problem I have with the 1st generation DSLRs from Nikon. The LCDs are SO SMALL
as to be useless in outdoor light for really being able to critically view your shot and make
adjustments. So while my excuse is 'it was just a photowalk lens test', my dilemma remains
going forward. But my main body, the D70 is a little smarter. You can see the two days' results,
the first day with the D70, the same basic shots are better overall in terms of light balance.

A further dilemma is the whole concept of fill-flash. I am not steeped in the photographic tradition.
I have been shooting with SLRs since the mid-70s. But that was just the START. I dropped it
as soon as my mirror assembly quit working about 1981. And I never was a good technique photog.
The concept of fill flash was yet to be learned when I stopped shooting. Then in the mid 80s,
I became a shooter by profession, video-wise. But when I began shooting stills again, I picked up
a point and shoot. My composition and technique are solid, but my fundamentals are weak.
I do not THINK about a shot in technical terms. I have a tool, an adjustable output flash, and I get
so caught up in shooting the shot that I forget to raise the flash in appropriate, non-low-light sitchos.
Same as I told Salvelinus about the circular polarizer....don't FORGET its THERE! :D

Wow, talking about my first camera made me think back a long way. The very first thing I wanted to do
with my camera when I got it was to take perv pics. I guess that's why everyone gets that out of their
system when they got a digital camera, gotta take shots naked just to revel in the fact that it will not have
to be developed.
But when my dad gave me this camera, I wanted to catch a cheerleader in mid-high kick. I was obsessed with it.
And I got good at it, lol. But when you had to send the film off, it was about as risque as I thought I could get
away with without the lab sending the FBI after me or something.

I think its funny that now that we are a generation removed from ever CONSIDERING that there is no more
LAB involved, I wonder how kids even THINK about their first digital camera. When I got my first digital back in
the early 90s, I immediately started asking women to pose nude for me. They had thought about it, but
would never want a lab to see the pics. It was a REAL selling point. I could shoot a ton of pics, burn a CD for em
and keep my promise not to share the photos, and count on word of mouth to keep me in hot girls naked in my house.

Anyway, back to my first camera.............

OK I lied...actually THIS was my first camera. But my dad took it back after I didn't seem to like it much.
I guess I was 10 at the time. I took it to camp, shot some shots, but never had any desire to use my allowance
to get the film developed. He took it back and used it and made a darkroom out of his bathroom every now
and then and developed the shots. but I never touched that Brownie again. He gave me that Sears
mamiya/sekor about 5 years later.

I almost bought one JUST the other day, but it was the lenses that made me pause, too.
Hell, I had a $150 Nikon D200 in my basket at Adorama this morning, and in the time it took

I stood up, stomped and cursed so loud it made our bedbug dog bark down the hall.

Hmmmm...... :) I loved that camera; cheap, all it had was a light meter mechanism to give you an idea as to the exposure, and I think depth of field preview and that was it. The rest was up to you. No depth of field preview on that, but you could set the ISO from 64 all the way up to 3200. I remember shooting with 1000 ISO film, and it was pretty grainy, even from Kodak.

I love grain on B&W film though. :dr
I thought about picking up some ilford 3200 B&W, still might at some point.

I plan on going back and finishing up my bachelors degree and changing my minor to photography from political science since i only have one have one class completed for that minor.

I still have a Pentax K-1000 with a stuck shutter stashed away somewhere. Likely not worth the money to have it fixed, or maybe a hard smack upside the body could get it working again???????? Hmmmm...... :) I loved that camera; cheap, all it had was a light meter mechanism to give you an idea as to the exposure, and I think depth of field preview and that was it. The rest was up to you. It took some nice pics

Been there, done that. Unfortunately I sold all of my darkroom equipment a while back or you could have it.

Started shooting with my first SLR, a Nikon FG-20, when I was a kid and went through a handful of film cameras. Remember getting an Nikon EM just because it had a power winder and looked cool, not really considering it had little manual functions.
Have worked in community newspapers since graduating from J-school, and spent the bulk of the 90s shooting with an F3 and F-801s. Also spent far too many Sundays in a poorly ventilated darkroom processing film.
While I miss some aspects of film, I've moved on. I definitely don't miss those chemical-induced headaches.
Salvaged all the darkroom gear when our paper went full digital, thinking I'd build a darkroom in the basement, but ended up selling it for a song at a garage sale.
Don't shoot a whole lot since moving up to management and do miss that part, though trying to get out more.
My son has now been bitten by the bug and it kinda cool to see him find his way, creatively, making some of the same technical mistakes I made years ago. He took an intro to communication tech course last semester and they actual taught him darkroom work, which surprised me. Now, he has dusted off my old film cameras and always asking for more film.

There will always be some need for film, it seems. I saw some guy at a parade here, he was from the media apparently, shooting pics using a really sweet Hasselblad.

I don't know about now, but the last I heard Nat. Geo still required all submissions to be slide. Not sure if it could be Fuji or it had to be Kodachrome. Most of us were using Fujichrome 100 pushed to 120 or 180 back when I was shooting a lot of nature stuff.

IIRC, the last roll of Kodachrome was produced in 2009. And I took a photography class back in 1983 when I was in 9th grade, it covered only black and white but I really enjoyed it. It was cool to learn all of the things that you can do in the darkroom. It was kind of a PITA to open the film cartridge and thread the film onto that reel and put it into the developer tank canister, all in pitch darkness.

We had a darkroom that could be used by anyone back at Seymour Johnson AFB. I had a
great time in that darkroom. I never processed any film, but I had a good time working over
all of my old negatives that I gotten back with my lab film developing. Saw an enlarger at
Goodwill last time I went. But that is one slope I will never slide down.

On a related note, I am going to give my D100 to my best friend in New Orleans. Its a
small price to pay for all the free lodging I get when I have time to go down there. A place
to stay in that city is worth WAY more than I paid for that camera. And way more than
I can ever give him. Gonna send down my $25 35-80mm lens, too. After that he is on
his own. I hate that I have to go over so many issues and warnings on that camera with him,
but Nikon Aquisition Syndrome requires a place to PUT all that crap, and it will be easy to see it go.

I did not go to New Orleans this weekend, I want the area clear when I go down to make
the shots better. A giant festival is no way to promote quality architectural shots. Missed
some hot girls in little, tiny clothes I'm sure, but that can be found any weekend down there.
So I am just going down next weekend. If the weather holds out, it should be nice.

Stayed in Memphis this weekend, and got schooled again as usual. For some reason,
I always forget to pay attention to something. This morning I had 150 shots in before
I realized I needed to get out of spot metering. It all looks great through the lens, lol.

I was gonna just PM the boy, but is anyone else curious as to why ole' Shark won't get out and shoot his D100 and post
up some photos?? I am SO curious. I will grant you that I found it to be a bucking bronco and almost impossible
to tame, and thus, hard to show my results in public, but come on Sharky-boy, let's see some pics. Your public is
waiting.

On a related note, I gave Shark a whole 24 hours to out-buy me, but I couldn't wait any longer. I have a history of
making BAD $75 dollar camera buys, and also a history of not being able to resist them. I bought that Fujifilm S1500
that turned out to be the most sluggish camera I ever used. I gave it to the kid downstairs from me for $25.

But Ado had a Nikon D50 with two defects, it had a tight power switch and a missing rubber flap that covers
the I/O connectors for file transfer and TV plugging in. Let me say that the power switch IS TIGHT, and a nice
black piece of gaffer's tape has covered the I/O area I never use since I use a card reader. That is by far
and away the best $75 I ever spent on a camera. JUST PERFECT image quality (for my lenses) and it sits
very nicely among my embarassingly, ever-growing collection of Nikon bodies.

OLS

Two bits of old gear today, the Nikon D50 I got so cheap, and for another $40, I picked up another Nikkor 70-210mm
lens for my sister. The lens has issues with the CPU, and it REALLY needs to be babied to get shots. It goes from
smooth as silk in it's push/pull zoom action and perfect pics, to messed up, rough action that produces flashing and
erratic numbers on the LCD status display and shoots either a all black or all whited out shot when it does so.
When it starts that $hi+, I jerk off the zoom a bit and it smooths out and takes great pics again. It has fine optics
and makes the D50 look like a great camera...For the life of me I cannot figure out how it messes up it's action.
The CPU issues I can see.

http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b611/CameraTestsPage/LES%2070-210%20LENS/DSC_0271_zps074f1d8b.jpg (http://s1294.photobucket.com/user/CameraTestsPage/media/LES%2070-210%20LENS/DSC_0271_zps074f1d8b.jpg.html)

This last shot is properly metered, but as the guy was smoking down the street, I couldn't exactly set in
any exposure compensation to overcome the camera seeing his headlights and the dappled late afternoon
sun. I just liked the pic. The camera perfectly stopped his motion while still giving a dynamic feel to the shot.
Yes the rider is dark, but I explained that earlier. I had to just shoot it or miss it.

http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b611/CameraTestsPage/LES%2070-210%20LENS/DSC_0011_zps2c3e2fdb.jpg (http://s1294.photobucket.com/user/CameraTestsPage/media/LES%2070-210%20LENS/DSC_0011_zps2c3e2fdb.jpg.html)

And again, these are just walking around lens and body test shots, but so far, this body and lens have produced
the best test pics I have taken since I began this odyssey.

At an urgent care to see if my wife needs a couple stitches on her chin. Surf board caught her there. Friend from work was trying to teach her. Surf was too rough for them to stand. She got some good paddle practice in though.

Shot some on the 60d and the waterproof Olympus AND put a 24 shot roll of Tmax 400 through the 35mm

Well no stitches. Just some surgical glue, butterfly bandage and a tetanus shot.

The ostrich was walking around below me, so I was waving my hand above my head, and it kept peeking up to see what it was...

I liked the ostrich, he was definitely peeping. Of course they are funny no matter when you shoot them.

You shot with the Oly camera you were going to return? Or did all that happen already and you have
a 2nd camera that you are satisfied with?

BAM! Stole another one!.....

Even though I have had no less than five DSLRs run through my fingers of late, I still want more.
So I DO TROLL the used rack daily at Ado. And the other day I saw a Nikon D200, This one was
$200, but the flaw was a "tight rear command dial" I thought, cha-ching, I can live with that, and
quickly ordered it, not wanting to get skunked again like when I missed the $150 D200 while I was
reading freaking reviews to see if it was worth it. Someone else snagged that one.

But last night I panicked.....the rear command dial is how you set EVERYTHING. And if it was as tight as the
on/off sw on my 'new' D50, I was doomed. SO as I had not gotten a shipping confirmation yet, I said,
"excellent, there's still time" and emailed a cancellation request. This morning the CS person said, "I'm sorry,
that item has shipped." I thought, yeah sure, that's why I have no shipping confirmation. But I thought,
maybe it wsa an oversight.

But today came in. Anyway, I get the camera to my desk and unpack it, and it is still in a box.
I know some photogs keep all the packaging pristine, so when they can sell their used up junk, they put it all back
in the box with all the plastic bags and stuff and line it all up just so, and they get more money for it since it looks new.

So this camera is still 100% complete, and I mean 100% complete. So I go RIGHT FOR that command dial,
spin it, and it's just a hair tight, barely noticable. Well the other thing they said was that the rubber grips
were peeling. ONE was. On a magnesium alloy heavy body, the grips from Nikon don't stick well, and a good hot day
is all it takes to start it sliding off. So I got some automotive trim adhesive at O'Reilly at lunch and this camera is now
THE freaking BOMB!!! Heavy, expensive, BLAZING FAST and a freaking masterpiece. And all that for $2-300 off the
going rate, and some $1000-$1200 off the new rate 5 years ago (i guess).

I like this Nikon D200 a lot. In fact I have told my sister she can trade in her D70 for what's
behind the curtain, or what's in the box Janice is holding. She can keep the D70, or trade it
back in to me for a Nikon D50 that I stole from Ado, or trade it for a Nikon D90 that I stole yesterday
for a song, but that will NOT auto focus, lol. What a choice. They're all good choices, but they all
come with their own hazards. She can stay with what she knows in the D70, but I don't think she
has been shooting it much. I can't STOP shooting these cameras, she seems not to have really started.
She can take a tiny bump up in LCD size and a better Image Quality, or a huge jump up in LCD, video and
live view, but no AF. Tough choice indeed.

I checked the shutter on the D200 today also, and STOLE IT seems somewhat tempered by the
relatively high count of 18,200. But I give the previous owner credit, they used it, but didn't abuse it much.
It is cleaner'n Skeeter's peter.

Brad. Shutter life on a d200 is 100k actuations so I'd say you still stole it

OLS
04-18-2013, 06:21 AM
But you have to understand the perspective....I have gotten 'lucky' so far, so very lucky.
My D70 has 1008, my sisters, about 2400. Now as you know, that doesn't mean "LUCKY".
in fact it could mean TAINTED. As in 'never was worth a $hi+ and was passed around from
sucker to sucker. I had no baseline on IQ, and hell, IQ was never something people
attributed glowingly to the D70. SO what did I know? I have had a real knack for getting
low Shutter counts on these items so far. But after holding it, shooting with it, looking at
the pics, I am quite happy with it [and wish I had gotten it for $75]. :D

I decided a month ago that I did not intend to go full frame, unless I retire and decide
that the PITA that is wedding photography was something I wanted to do, and even then,
I am not sure I would necessarily go Full Frame. My lenses are all used, and outside of the
cheap 50mm I got and the 35mm DX 1.8, I don't think I spent over $100 on anything I have.
I figured why tempt fate with FF, seeing what the outer edges of my image circle have in store?
I do not want to necessarily go into a collection of outstanding lenses, so to go to a D700 would
be a 'loose board at the top of the stairs' for me. YES I want it, I held it and shot it and knew
I WANTED IT. But even for a beat up model, it was still $1200. And boy did you ever say it right.
Had I not bought ANY of my $75-150 cameras, I would have enough for that D700 today.
I did not want you to be right, I have had a BALL buying and shooting and passing on all these cameras.
But knowing all I do now, MAN would I love to have every cent back. I would still SPEND IT ALL,
but I would spend it much differently. The only thing that remains really good is that there are
three very happy people now with DSLRs and I still like that better than ONE happy dude.

I like the Silhouettes and the last gull the best, the one with the reflective surf line, and also the gull with the
black head. I also like the one where Crystal is looking out at the incoming surf and you can see the 'fear' in
her eyes, or at least what has to be intense concentration and being on the edge of her ability to control the
situation.

I am always someone who likes a silhouette shot, they just force you into another brain place where I think
you appreciate the capture more. Every shot has it's place, but silhouettes are SO strong to me. I was even
wondering why you did not attempt one of THESE SHOTS (http://www.sup-surfing.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/underwater-surfer.jpg), but the water quality is not anywhere near the same,
I now realize. But when I saw that camera, and heard where you were taking it, this is what I thought of.

I also want to make sure people realize, when I say I stole the D200, I realize that it is no longer a great
camera in comparison to the cameras that are current, or even the used cameras one or two generations
behind. But remember that my first DSLR was a D70 and my second was a D100. Having not been too deep into
menus yet, and understanding that it is not a D700 F.F. camera, I am still tickled by the sheer weight, the improved
image quality, and not surprisingly for an old fart, the bigger LCD. I CAN SEE what I am screwing up now, whereas
before I just screwed up blindly. If I act like I just won the lottery, I kinda did. I love the price I paid for my D70,
and I can take a great photo with it. If I concentrate REALLY hard, lol. This new used D200 looks like a 67 Corvette
Stingray to me.

OLS
04-18-2013, 12:16 PM
OK, NOW I done stoled-ed it.

I did not want to mention this since I have already bored you all to tears with my used
camera stories. But now it must be told. I bought a D90 used at Ado the other day.
It was $200, and according to them, 'it would not autofocus'. Now they are one of the
two largest camera retailers operating today. They should KNOW well enough if the
auto-focus is not working. But for the large-a55 screen on the back, which as discussed,
I need, cause I am old, and for the likely increased image quality due in part to the better
Megapixel rating and auto dynamic range enhancements and even chromatic aberration
correction in-built, I figured it was a fine place to stop this crazy buying, as I already
had a likely useless D200 in-bound with a command dial that "is very hard to turn". We know
how that went if you have been following along. But in the end, I am trying to justify the
large expenditure, since it is getting a little over the top now with all these bodies on hand.

So I get the D90 in, an item that is generally $400 for a beater, and a $5-600 dollars for
a clean one. I paid $200 for it. So half price either way, but 66 percent off since when
it arrives today, it is super clean. Now I told you how I felt about that, they are the first
or second-largest online camera retailer in the world, they have professional evaluators
to judge what's what when they get used gear in. So I set the camera up how I want it
and go over to the nursery to shoot. So I shoot a ton of pics, focusing the lens
and having no trouble seeing the shot. I mean, when you are old like me,
things are out of focus, sure. But when they come into focus, you can see the difference,
in that its LESS blurry than it was. And with the diopter, it's crisp enough
for me. Is it a hassle? Yes it is, but for the quality of the camera, it's well worth it.
So after I shoot and am ready to go, I think, OK, let me cycle through the autofocus
modes to test and see if ANY of em work. But I am hunting over the body to find the
mode switch, and I can't find one. But what I DO find is that the selector switch that
takes you from manual to autofocus is in manual. Now I don't want to get too excited,
because I am focusing manually, and there is no way to do otherwise with the switch
in that setting, it locks the lens out.

So I flip it to AF, point it at a rosebud, and it pops right into focus.
Now after reading ALL THAT, you probably knew what was coming
anyway. But I could have dropped a No.2 in my shorts right there
on the spot. Here is a camera I gladly paid $200 for, KNOWING it had
a critical flaw, and having no idea how it would look abuse-wise
when it came in to boot. But instead of all that being one way,
it was all completely the other way, but the price is still $200.
I end up getting a pristine camera in all ways for the cost of a
'dump it cam'.

I don't know whether to STOP LOGGING IN to Ado immediately
for fear that is the extent of the luck I have in me, or whether to
buy every item I see that I am willing to chance. Obviously the
answer is the first one, I have everything I need now. And I DID
buy two eyepiece rubbers to replace the ones on my incoming
cameras since it is ALWAYS the first thing that gets lost on these
cameras. And they both have their original rubbers. So sure, I am
out 8 bucks. :) Oh no.

And that's that. I am sending my sister the D50, keeping the D70 for it's
1/500th flash sync speed, and giving my D100 to my friend in NO. I now
have the perfect bag, 5hit lenses or not.

Nikon D90 out the window shot, and cropped from the larger image....didn't realize til much later
I was in manual mode, so the shot is just a lucky exposure. I later produced the flower once I checked
the exposure mode and ramping up the shutter speed to correct the exposure. Derh. This is the worst
lens I own. So I imagine the camera is great with a 50mm 1.8 on it.

This is the kind of neighborhood I work in.

Luckily when you need to test out a new camera, we also have a nursery.
Damn camera seems to have nice dynamic range. It isn't even set up yet. I have no idea of where it is set
for now. This one was just finally figuring out it was in manual and adjusting the shutter speed to bring the
exposure down.

For a long time I've been of the mind that bodies just don't have the same staying power that they did when we used film. Digital gets obsolete so quickly. The Nikon F2 was a workhorse in the 70s and the F3 followed suit through the 80s and into the 90s. But I gotta say, the D90 has changed my mind. It has legs. That's a great score!

OH GOD NO!! Don't be like ME!.....Ron, it NEVER STOPS! I had such hopes for you.

I know you like em pristine, and $389-399 is about the going rate for top notch level D90s,
so you certainly didn't get RIPPED off or anything. I give Ado all the credit in the world for
conservative and fair estimations of condition. Not sure where you go yours, but man, are you
gonna love THAT camera.

Oh yeah, Justin, I saw the pics, I just saw the bigger news at the end and gulped hard and
thought, 'That poor BASTARD!" Man is he on a slope now. I hope he survives.

As to the pics, I am intrigued by the concept, but you gave me too many. By the time
I got to the last one, my brain had numbed to the point where it was not able to see
them as "WOW, cool", and more of a deal where it's like the pizza slices...Two are great
and then when I have that 3rd and 4th or even 5th, it doesn't taste as good, lol.
I think they are great pics, though. I think my favorite is on this page, the first or last
one in #2361. The bridge I like a lot, too. I like it any time someone goes out and makes
an effort to take pics and share them. That's why I like Flickr so much. I am a consumer,
I like to see stuff, feel the excitement of going out and trying to make the best pics you can
and sharing them. My saddest thing about it though is having to drop out of two groups this
week, the canon S5 IS group and the Nikon D50 group. I hate it, I just hate it. But maybe my
sister will join the D50 group. I told my sister that I flat out refuse to be a camera HOARDER.
I might be a purchasing glutton, but I have whittled that kit down severely to where I was
looking in my Canon bag and thinking, "that's all the lenses I have?" lol

The bridges pics.... I went back and looked at them, and the longer you stare at them
the better they get. This is about my favorite use of a camera. To be somewhere when
someone else is paying for the electricity, and giving you this great look at something, and
you can take your camera and set it up for a long exposure and make something so
beautiful. It makes you want to go out every night and find something else to shoot.

P.S. Keh is very very conservative in there ratings.

It's funny, the only thing about KEH that I noticed in the 3 times I have visited is that they don't
seem to discount to the level I was looking for at the time. I want to STEAL stuff, now, haha.
But it is good to know that they are also very fair, since when you pay ANY money for a thing
you want to be happy with the purchase, even if you were slumming for the cheapest price
possible. And I think I have said this before, but I have to thank you for Adorama.
When you and I first started talking about cameras here, you told me they were better than B&H,
but my mind was comparing one thing and not what ended up being the most important thing TO ME.

On new gear, none of the best ones are 'the best'. But on USED GEAR, Adorama SMOKES B&H.
Just beats the crap out of em. Not only do you get a better price, but you get a much more detailed
description of what is 'wrong' with the item at Ado. You can make an informed decision and
act or not. At B&H you get that vague number code, which is adequate from a fairness point of view,
but any number of things could be behind a low rating and you don't know what it is. I guess you
could CALL them, lol. I just like to order stuff impersonally...if I have to bit(h, I'll do THAT on the phone, haha.

Thanks. Next time ill set it to a lower ISO and longer shutter. I think those bridge shots were at 400iso because that's the film speed in my camera. This way I could find what works with the dslr and mirror that with te film. Metering a scene like that is hard, especially when the 35mms meter is not as good. I had to MF this scene with the 35mm cuz the AF isn't too good at night.

OH, that was the Film camera eh? The Elan. I am not sure you said that in the post.
That is interesting. In that case, the pics are even better. That shizzle is hard to pull off
without years and years of experience with film. Nice work on that. Not sure you will ever
find a working relationship between ISO and ISO, but if the experiment yields any kind of
baseline comparison and you take good notes, it will still be helpful to you.

Hell, I thought you just set up the old 60D and fired off a bunch of timed exposures til
you got something you liked. That makes it double nice work.

For the fire, you know what would be cool....lay down on the ground a lot closer and shoot
upwards. Sure, it's a little dangerous, haha.

emopunker2004
04-19-2013, 07:28 AM
No that was the dslr. I shot some with the film too though. Film roll is still in the élan. Haven't used it up yet
However I think those were the only two I attempted with the 60d so I nailed it. With the film I bracketed what I got with the dslr. Shot the same settings then up a lil and down a lol on the exposure

I see what you mean all this time Ron.....those lake pics LOOK cold. I got a shiver just imagining what it was like
out there. I forgot to do what I told myself I would get to 'one of these days before I go to New Orleans", and that
was turn the LCD brightness up. My pics are still coming out hot, and I need some kind of feedback to help me dial it in.

But the D90 kicked EVER-LOVING A55! Man what a fine camera. i got the D200 stuck in a deep menu setting that had it
firing at about 1 second no matter what shutter speed I set. I worked around it, but it crippled my wide angle body
I had on a strap. I had the D90 in a holster, and I wore it OUT! Showed up in the French Quarter before the sun
came up and enjoyed perfect light for 3 hours before I ducked out to the oldest cemetery in the city, RIGHT
next to the notorious Iberville projects. Not many trouble makers up that early though, so I shot un-robbed. I DID
take the D100, though, I was not having the D-90 or D-200 stolen.

I was surprised that the D100 operated so perfectly at this location. I can't find a thing I don't like
about this shot other than the too-big watermark.

It was probably about 8:00 in the morning, so maybe that had something to do with the overall feel of the photos. The lake WAS that blue, and it was maybe 29 degrees with a nice wind blowing. I was surprised that the swans built a nest so close to the walkway. They usually shy away from humans.

Ron you are going to love that D90.....I took three cameras to New Orleans this past weekend and it SMOKED
the other two.

shark
04-22-2013, 03:46 PM
:noon So how's the learning curve with the D90 compared to the D100?

OLS
04-22-2013, 04:11 PM
ZERO....if you have been through the wringer on the D100, you can pick up the D90 and shoot away.
I will grant you that there are many adaptations to certain systems such as autofocus sensor arrays
that would take some reading to use most effectively, but everything works the same in it's most basic
procedures. Now, I don't know if you have used the D100 enough to know a lot of the ins and outs,
and my experience is non-typical in that I handled a ton of DSLRs in two months, and was forced to
basically shoot with them every day to evaluate them all and figure out what I kept and what I passed
on to loved ones. I also have a job where my boss does not use me efficiently and I can almost surf the
web all week, reading all kinds of manuals and reviews.

shark
04-23-2013, 04:47 AM
Yeah that's my main gripe with the D100, in that you have those six areas to use, take it or leave it.

OLS
04-23-2013, 06:29 AM
I took photos of New Orleans that were among the best photos I have ever taken.
I have not really shown any of them here, nor are they on my photostream. They
have dynamic range to die for, with every subtle nuance of color and light that you
could imagine in various shots. Yes, the light was very good, but I have been in point &
shoots for so long, and then in CHEAP DSLRs for another period, and the progression has
been very stark and perfectly delineated. I knew what I was seeing as soon as I saw it
for the first time. People who started long ago in DSLRs might laugh at me, but while
I knew that their cameras were more capable than mine, I was not going to spend the
kind of money they did to get a picture out of a camera. I was seeing the world fine til
I met the D90. NOW I know how much I missed, its like recovery from cataract surgery
was for my mother. She got home and found out her house was dirty.

The pic I attached is sized way down to fit the asylum, and it might not be the best
example of the dynamic range I was talking about, but its a really nice photo. For some
reason I do not think it would have been possible with the D100 or D70.

That sucker seems feature packed, but for once in my photographic life, I can honestly say "F off, I'm FULL!"
That camera seems to shoot faster than any of mine, and one of mine will do 6 FPS. But I can't spare the room.
Man I have a lot of freaking cameras! I logged in to Ado as usual to see what they had for $75, but if it ain't
$75 nowadays, I can't get a rise out of the ole credit card. And now it looks like rain in N.O. this weekend, so it
puts me little photo safari in some jeopardy. Still, that would be three weekends in a row, and that's a lil much.

But I have made a bit of change off that trip last week, sold 6 prints today, some of the 13x19 variety.
That paid for my gas and ink and paper. I know its old news by now, but if anyone wants to buy a print,

Not here! Love the underwater shots, which have to be pretty difficult, but my favorites are the shots of the dolphins playing and the atrium of the ship. Man, I gotta go on a cruise sometime.... You really have a knack for catching some great action shots.

I use Photoshop Elements to touch up photos, usually to tweak the contrast some, or adjust lighting. I'm finding that the photos that I take with the D90 as opposed to the D100 require very little, if any, fixing. That, and the autofocus and metering are much more accurate with the D90. My complaint with the D100 was with the colors being off, regardless of whether I used sRGB or AdobeRGB. Plus the white balance seemed a bit whacked. To the D100's credit though it is a first generation digital SLR, when the manufacturers were still working out the bugs of the new technology

I like CCDs best, but I have been using CCDs since the very first video camera I touched 25 yrs ago.
I don't think anyone can tell anymore if there is an advantage to either one, it could just
be that modern digital cameras are taking better photos, and modern cameras are using
CMOS, so therefore CMOS is better. And it could be, but I can't say. RIGHT at the time
of the switch, CCDs were better, but I think CMOS were cheaper, but by the time the
newer generations were in full control, you'd be hard pressed to say CMOS sucks....look at
the pictures.

The D90 saved my a55 this weekend. I got there way too early, which was good for the night shot I wanted,
but I left Memphis early cause there was no likelihood that I would take a 2-3 hour nap, or that I could sleep,
or that it would work. And if I stayed and waited to the proper leaving time, I would be wasting my alertness
reservoir. So I just drove on down. My night shots workrd out fine, but then I had two hours of dark to wait out
until I could shoot the quarter again. Instead I just started shooting. The D90 shots with a plain 18-55
were generally great, but my D200 shots with a MUCH TOO SLOW lens were terrible. By the time the sun came
up good and was cooperating well, I was freaking bushed. And carrying the heavy D200 actually started to wear
on me. Never thought I would say that. I LOVE the D90. This is NOT ONE of the good shots, but it was cool.
This was before I went ahead and upped the shutter speed. The light was coming on. That's a fire truck by the way.

This shot represents all that is stupid in me. Is it a great shot? You damn right it is.
But its everything that came AFTER this shot that makes it part of just a stupid, stupid
weekend of shooting.

http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b611/CameraTestsPage/CrescentCityConnection1X_zps4d7d13f7.jpg (http://s1294.photobucket.com/user/CameraTestsPage/media/CrescentCityConnection1X_zps4d7d13f7.jpg.html)

I should have come back with 1500 shots and easily 200 real winners.
But fully half of my haul is virtually useless. If I was building up a stockpile of pics that
were little memories, the pics would serve. But I was not shooting for me, I was shooting
for fun and profit. Half my shots being grainy and noisy was NOT part of the plan.
But I left Memphis too early, got to New Orleans too early, and didn't have enough light for
2/3 of the time I was there shooting. And even then, had I screwed the right lens on the D200,
I could have achieved my goal. Instead I wrong-headedly chose the 10-20 wide angle, which is
just SOOOoo SLoooow. I KNOW BETTER! And yet I did it anyway because I love the field of view
the wide angle gives me and that clouded my judgement. But at least I have ONE RULE I stick by.
Always walk around with TWO CAMERAS. I had a 18-55 kit lens on the D90, but the quality of the
camera saved my a55. And apparently the 18-55 is not a bad lens at all.

You can read all about it in my blog entry for this shot. at the link below.

Compositing it in photshop really hides the exif. Let me copy and past that. I am gonna have to give you general
data, I took dozens of the same basic shot. I also have to upload a straight from the camera HUGE shot to Flickr
to get the data in a good copy and paste format. I am gonna PM you that to save the page from a huge readout.
HERE is the edited version:

Camera Nikon D90
Exposure 1.6
Aperture f/7.1
Focal Length 18 mm
ISO Speed 200
Exposure Bias -2/3 EV
Flash No Flash
Exposure Program Shutter speed priority AE
Max Aperture Value 3.5
Metering Mode Multi-segment
Light Source Unknown
User Comment (c) W.Matherne2013 All Rights Resvd.

Exposure Mode Auto
White Balance Auto
Digital Zoom Ratio 1
Focal Length (35mm format) 27 mm

I messed with all kinds of shutter speeds, from 1 to 12 seconds, to keep
the ISO nice and quiet. I found the best rate of shutter speed was between
1 and 3 seconds and i also tried all the white balance setttings, but Auto was
fine. I SWEAR I thought I was in some kind of Sepia setting, but it was just
those damn lights. I couldn't find a sepia tone setting, and I guess that is
about right, all the point and shoots offer it, and I just thought it looked off.

It was also on a tripod, which I rarely use. I certainly could have used it in the quarter
later on that night, and might consider carrying one with me in the future if I intend to shoot in the dark
like that. I had my heaviest tripod with me, which was great for the bridge shot where i had all the time
in the world and I was utterly alone on that levee. But later on in the quarter I am not sure I would have
wanted to keep lugging it around. But again, in the darkness of 4 am, I will definitely look hard at it if I do it

I've always considered a heavy, solid tripod to be the most important accessory one can have because on a tripod, you are maximizing the performance of your lens. I have gone as far as to tape an eight or nine inch piece of thin wire to the back of a camera, like an antenna, and squeeze the cable release only when the wire stops twitching.

Oh BTW, that is a beautiful piece, Brad. Damn it, I'm running out of wall space.

You mean "press the shutter when you get back from the emergency room with an eye-patch?"
I would poke my eye out for sure.

I agree that a tripod is essential for what I am doing, especially in the situation that the photo represents.
A 2 second shot of that scene on a tripod would have been excellent. You can see the ISO working
overtime in that shot even as small as I have it presented there. However there is also an element of
danger to working with a pod at 4am in the FQ. You have NO IDEA who you will run into and I kind of
prefer to slink about and shoot without attracting too much attention. I WILL carry a monopod with me
next time though, if not a tripod.

Case in point, and a story I will end up telling on that blog, but I am coming down Royal Street and
looking for likely winner photos, and I see the number one danger sign in physical violence right there
in the middle of the street coming toward me. Now I have the advantage, because I have not been drinking.
But there in the street is a thin, wiry white male with no shirt on. It is not COLD on this particular morning,
but it ain't New Orleans Hot yet either. So I duck down St. Phillip street to let this hazard pass. And since
he HAS been drinking, he does not notice me in the least. But he DOES stop to admire himself in a large
store window. I am hoping he doesn't smash the window, but he seems content to stand there and flex.
So I decide to re-route entirely and just go opposite him with all speed. I have no idea if he is a threat
to me or my gear, but I have seen enough episodes of C.O.P.S. to know what the potential is when a cat is
dressed like that at 4am in the a place like the French Quarter. A tripod in this case would have made me obvious.

Here is a shot I had to get to satisfy Mr. Picky-Choosy. I gave him a book with 70 thumbnails in it
and he said, "Where are all the Memphis Shots??? I want Memphis stuff". Which of course is a bit humbling
to me, I LOVE New ORLEANS, but that is force-feeding a proposed clientele with what YOU like and not
what they demand. Now I have every intention of shooting Memphis when I am done with NO, but I had
not messed with it much to this point.

http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b611/CameraTestsPage/BealeStreetatNight_zpscf6a4156.jpg (http://s1294.photobucket.com/user/CameraTestsPage/media/BealeStreetatNight_zpscf6a4156.jpg.html)

So I strapped on my big boy pants and headed out to shoot the 3 Memphis bridges at sunset.
I knew by the time I was done with that, I could shoot the Hernando Desoto bridge when it's lights came on.
Then I could shoot Beale Street, since it's Neon would look best in darkness. I got it ALL DONE, and then
got home to process them and jump in bed, late, but creatively satisfied. Now let's see how much money
I can extract from Picky boy.

Oh I definitely understood you, I just had to tell that story one way or another. You know I cain't be havin
no 2 line posts. What would people think? If I go down there by myself this weekend, I will take a light one
with me, and I always have my tabletop one with me. I will be there Friday, but might have my gracious host
with me one one of a few trips I have planned. I gave him one of my old point and shoot "DSLR lite" cameras
with full manual controls, etc, and I think he is kind of needing to go with me one time so he can ask the right
questions at the right time. Other than that I do not think he would want to hang out with me doing that kind
of thing.

But a tripod is your friend. I have 25 years producing TV commercials, I am definitely an advocate, lol. We will
see if it makes a difference. On a related note, I bought an old manual Focus 24mm 2.8 yesterday, won't have it
in time to go to NO, but I bought it so I could have two camera bodies with low light lenses if I ever got to NO at
2am again, lol. I have a 1.8 50mm and a 1.8 35mm, but they are STILL too tight once you put them on a crop
sensor body. I need wider than that, and almost got the 20mm, but it was too pricey and the 24mm specced
out too well. "THEY" say it is a great old lens. 9 elements and just fantastic optical quality. On a DX camera,
ehhh, we'll have to wait and see.

On another related note, I am having too much fun messing with this shooting for money deal. I can't be a pro,
because as long as I have been 'taking pictures', I have always had one mantra, NO WEDDINGS. And if I was an
actual pro, it would cease to be fun. And I am having fun. Once all the low-hanging fruit is picked at work and
in the family, we will have to see if I can sell anything. But it is FUN taking the stuff knowing the goal, and its
driving me to get out and walk and shoot and go places. I am a homebody hermit. This gets me out.

In a stinking cave with the need for an updated body....but still a fun sequence... Wish I would have mashed the shutter .5 seconds earlier....that shifted the frame in PP to flatten the boards in the background(I find the slant distracting).

How do you think I FEEL, E.J., my viewfinder tells me I am straight and I am not.
But hell, its used, if I cared I would turn the camera one degree clockwise and
stop doing the same thing over and over on every shot. :D

MAN its been a long time since I saw grain.....wait, no it hasn't I just shot at 4 am.
I MEAN film grain. Took me a while to get used to it. Tell us next whether it was worth
investing in a camera and film and processing. I am FULLY converted forever and always.
But back when I used film, I wasn't all that good, anyway. I always just blamed the
hand-me-down camera and my lack of knowledge. Never had a lesson. So I always wondered
why my flash shots at football games were half black. I guess I must have found the answer
at a library or something. You see kids, when I WAS young, there was no internet to find the
answers to stuff, lol.

Nice Brad.

We both know they are crappy, but the subject matter is cool. I never expected to see that in
the middle of the MS river that that time of the morning, although cruise ships are a common sight there.
If I had intended to ever be able to use it, exposure compensation would have been a good idea.
But I wanted the sun more than the ship, so I made a choice, lol.

I think that there is certainly a place in the bag for that Kodak film, but not for the effect you
