i did a trade with a newb on CS... i thought it would be like most navy flakes (no latakia, slight floral topping) and would rock...

nope, SG Navy Flake is a latakia blend with a slight rum topping. :su
but that's okay, it has it's place. lucky for me, the tin i acquired was about half gone.

it's not too bad. a shame it was never officially made/released.
i found, what i believe to be, an internal factory sample tin of a blend that they never released. a curly cut Va/Per... the 100g tin was plain, but had an old rectangular sticker on the lid with the A&C Petersen crest, blend name and tinning date. wasn't something that could be sold anywhere, and they curlies were definitely smaller than Escudo... they were the same size as Three Nuns or something like that. different flavor from escudo as well, this was way more tangy, not nearly as much perique.
i waited for months on that tin on ebay. the guy was selling a large amount of tobacco for an older collector but everything was "buy it now" for insane amounts. finally, after months of nobody buying the 50+ tins the guy had up for auction, he took off the "buy it now" and made 'em real auctions. i nabbed it for $13 (instead of the $50+ he'd been asking). 100g tin from '97... only called "Curly Cut". i was sold. :dr

i hear cigar scissors work great as well. i have a cheap pair, so i haven't used them yet. i've used my palio to cut 'em, but after a while, if i do a lot of coins at once, it can gum up pretty quick and starts to give me cramps in my hands.

I used to think rather highly of AJ's Va/Per but after smoking it this time around, it left a jacked up aftertaste in my mouth which I believe is caused by the cavendish. kind of backwards, but i needed the brown rope kick in the a.m. cuz i was bored at work.

I put it in a small crockery type pot and then seal the thing with aluminum foil all around it so it keeps all the flavor in...then I use the 220 method...220 degrees for 2 hours and 20 minutes...pretty much like throwing a sealed tin on the dashboard of the car and letting it sit in the sun for a while...it really reduces the bite...

I was gonna start a thread, this was such a major deal. Smoked my first three bowls
of tobacco last night. Figured I'd run em through the corncob since I was a blind,
stumbling F#*^. Many will laugh, I started out with Escudo. Some pipe smoker's
would say, 'WHAT!, that's crazy, man', but I have had so many cigars over time,
it was fine, not mild but intensely pleasurable to my tattered tongue.
I smoked three bowls in a row, got a little beating on the tongue, but was fine about
half an hour after and this morning. I like it. Got beaucoup blends on the way from
Burlington, but needed something LAST NIGHT, and at my tobacconist, the only thing
I recognized out in a tin was Escudo. So I took the plunge. Tough to start out that
way when you can't even load up a proper bowl. I got a little better at it.

Spring is nearly underway here and I have been smoking more cigars than pipes, but I reached for a tin of Reiner Blend #71 (Long Golden Flake) tonight. It's really hitting the spot in a UPCA Stanwell billiard & I'm glad I cracked the seal on this tin. Tasty, sweet VAs balanced well with some burley. Good stuff!

that blend gets a lot of good reviews, but not by me. easy to load/smoke, as most Germaine's blends are due to the near shag-like cut, but the flavor isn't what i am after, even for a Va/Per.

tossed in on top to taste test it. I managed to spend so much time on the road that I got to smoke
both to the bottom. Nice notes of each blending in with the other.

was a gift/sample a while back from EvanS (probably over an ounce worth)... i was cleaning up my pipe area (top of my dresser) and found the baggie tripple bagged with a couple other samples he sent with coffee. so, figured i'd smoke it.

of the burley's i've had, this has been the best in the flavor dept. In the prep/loading dept, i can't stand "cakes". i'm not a burley fan at all.
it does have a pleasing room note, and this blend doesn't royally ghost up a pipe after a single smoke (like some other burleys i've had).

i won't buy it again, but it's not bad at all, just not my thing... well, maybe an ounce for a change of pace once every couple of months... maybe.

if you like a sweet burley, then i would suggest this one... i'm just not a big burley fan, and don't like cake tobaccos. the flavor is good, though.

If you like Midnight Smoke, give Blue Note a try (same blender)...it's very similar in aroma to MS, but has a lot more flavor. It's a blend of Black Cav, Burley, and VA, and it's probably my favorite drugstore blend (and certainly my favoite from Altadis).

Hoping so. Let the entire tin air out last night. Going to smoke a bowl or two tonight. Cleaned out a straight billiard and got my new bulldog going to give it a try in those pipes. So far not very promising. I'm not sure if it's the blend due to the high praises this blend has been getting. It supposed to be a light morning mixture of sorts so I might just like more latakia or might just not be ready for more subtle blends.

The aromatics you smoked are often fairly moist, and retain moisture well. try letting them sit out for 1/2-1 hour.

Ended up smoking two bowls of Chelsea Morning last night. I'm glad I switch pipes and let this blend air out. Really starting to enjoy it. Light English is the best description. Some prefer it in the morning, but at night it works well also. It's nice this way because when I wake up my mouth, despite flossing, brushing,and using Listerine with other blends, doesn't taste like an ashtray.
Going for it as we speak.
