Late evening pipers...

Thursday - "Mitchells Blend" in the meerschaum volcano. This is named after a member on PipeSmokersForum. He'd mentioned a blend of his which I thought was interesting that follows: 1/3 Old Joe Krantz, 1/3 Golden Extra, and 1/3 H&H Signature LJ Hearth Virginia. I substituted the H&H Sig and choose Anniversary Kake instead. I purchased 1oz OJK, 1oz Golden Extra, and 1oz Anni Kake from Pipes & Cigars. Mixed all ingredients until well blended, and stuffed and compressed into a wide mouth pint Mason jar. That was on 03/12/2015. I removed the lid on Thursday 04/23/2015 and this stuff rocks.

Friday (today) - Russ O' new blend Spectre in the meerschaum volcano. Think I found another favorite to smoke on a regular basis.

Last smoke this evening was Mac Barens HH Vintage Syrian in a big bowl meerschaum. Good stuff!

Have a good rest of the evening everyone...

Going outside to smoke a Cob General (MM) with some franken baccy. Its all I have thats dry. Lots in fridge drying but none toasty just yet. The Franken baccy of odds n ends and some Drew estates 7th ave blonde.

I have a tin of Mississippi River but dont care for it much. Also a tin of Scottish Mixture and am undecided on that also. The Peter St Lux Bulls Eye Flake is pretty strong for me. maybe it will mellow with some age.

The H&H Anniversary kake is also decent to smoke. I need to buy a lot more to age so I always have some choices!

I had two firsts yesterday. Pete's University Flake. Nice Va flake with a hint of berry topping though not enough to qualify as an Aro. I really enjoyed this as a change of pace flake.
The second was Samovar. I'm not sure my words can give this blend the justice it deserves. An absolutely amazing Balkan. That said, don't buy any, it's horrible. I'll just go ahead and stock up to save you from yourselves.

I was afraid those reviews set my expectations too high as has happened in the past. TR can be a great tool but can just as quickly betray you.

Well, I've had no problems with the reviews. Its a matter of getting to know some of the characters writing those reviews and intuition. Taking those reviews from TR, and filtering with other reviews seen on PSF, Smoking Pipes, Pipes and Cigars, Pipes Magazine, and even from the folks here at CA.

But, if you hadn't twisted my arm so hard this morning, I would not have had to place an order this morning for 2 tins of Samovar and 8oz of John Patton's Storm Front:D;)

CoffeeWaterBeer
05-11-2015, 06:18 AM
You're in for a treat Mark. I hope you like it. I think I'm going to grab some Wilderness and Legends next order as McC has some great blends that don't get the spotlight they deserve.

As for TR, you're absolutely right. I find I cross reference a lot and am now taking more notice of reviewers that seem to share my tastes. You have to laugh at the posts in there that seem to be reviewing a completely different tobacco ("sure you're in the right tab dude?").

So as not to derail this, I went with Samovar last night in a Savinelli full bent and cobbed some nightcap on the drive in to work this morning.

Oh my Mark! That is beautiful!

Thanks Bill and Darren. Bill, she smokes just fine! The bowl is wide open at the top, and then narrows slightly starting about half way down the interior of the bowl.

Storm Front uses a couple of cubed burley blends and cigar leaf. So, when the burn got down to that half way mark in the bowl, it started to narrow, and for a while, it tasted like I was puffing on a good stogie for a time...

Rich, I've never purchased Anni Kake in the tin, so I do not know of the contents once it is opened and so forth. I can tell you that I purchase Anni Kake in bulk. Upon arrival, there are generally broken chunks from the kake (some small and some medium size), with loose leaf mixed in. The moisture content from my purchases over the years (in bulk form) has generally been mild to medium (nothing to write home about). Just pack it in your bowl and give it a good char, kick back and enjoy:tu

I have done either way. I would loosen the tin top or just put the baggie in. The baggies seem to breath. It does dry the tobac pretty quickly so check it daily.

Escudo in a beat down, sad looking cob this morning.

Rich, Peterson Flakes definitely need a little air time. Also, if you are limited on time, just be sure to fully rub the flake out as it's pretty solid. The stringier you get it, the easier it lights.

Trying some Boswell's Best (thanks Steve!) in the Twain Bent. My first aromatic, the tobacco has a very sweet vanilla smell in the baggy. Easy and cool smoking, very very very mild, not what I would expect from an aromatic, the room smells like a vanilla candle has been burning, very strong room note (much stronger than the actual smoking flavors), it's that vanilla with a hint of cocoa or chocolate. I seem to get more flavor sipping on it a couple little sips at a time rather than big pulls and massive clouds of smoke. So far no gurgle, even though I don't think I let it dry enough before trying it.

When I take those huge puffs I think it's a bit too much for me to really pull out the notes that's all, it's overwhelming a bit, with the little sips there is only a bit of smoke and I can really 'think about it' while I'm enjoying my pipe.

A little Owl's Head from 4noggins in an Eaton cob this morning. Very nice Lat mix, I should restock and put some away for down the road.
I went back to try Star of the East again last night. At first I found it a bit abrasive, tasty but very rough around the edges. With a little age on it (6-9 months) I'm finding it a little rounder, less harsh. With the difference found in a few months aging, I'm thinking this is another to buy and just put away for a couple years. The orientals pop now whereas they weren't as prominent when fresh.

This mornings commute consisted of Deception Pass in a bent Grabow that's been hanging out with the car cobs.

The home smoke still varies bowl to bowl but I've been making my way through Jackknife Plug at a good pace. Definitely a plug worth stocking up on.

Going to try the Enchanted Forest (2007) gifted by Jordan (Sooner). It smells wonderful and with 7+ years aging it should be smooth as silk.Using a favorite MM diplomat. Warm this morning so siding with a nice cold Coke on the screen porch with daisy the sweet little Chiweenie dog! Thanks Jordan!

I was unfortunately interrupted by a fire call yesterday while I was enjoying a bowl of Stokkebye Navy Flake and was only able to smoke about a 1/4 of the bowl. So today I loaded my Gresham Giant back up for another go. Man, this is going to turn into one of my go to tobaccos. Wonderful leather notes with just subtle hints of floral notes and sweetness. Loved it! Glad I bought a few ounces in bulk.

McClelland 5100 Red Cake in a Comoy's #87. This might be my favorite pipe/tobacco pairing to date.

60% Deception Pass, 20% Nightcap, and 20% Shortcut to Mushrooms. The StM ratio is a bit too high still but the sample of it I used was almost a year old and at least dry. Needs more treble, I'll report back.

Picked up a blend called Matterhorn and 10th Anniversary from Cigar and Tabac. Both are fantastic. I may have to take a couple large jars over and fill them up.

The Deception Pass is really nice on its own....

It really is, agreed. I don't normally do anything with a high amount of cavendish so I thought I would play around a bit. It's fair to say Greg Pease and Russ Ouelllete don't have to worry any time soon.

Had my first bowl of Esoterica Stonehaven. Holy crap....:dr I think I might like this better than Penzance. Toasted bread, nuttiness, and dark cocoa. What a great smoke. Wish I had more.....(don't we all)
