Tonight will be my first bowl ever - Golden Cavendish - no idea what it is or what it's supposed to taste like. It was recommended by another patron in the B&M while I was buying my pipe, so I bought 2oz. I'm adventurous.

FWIW, it doesn't smell "good" to me. It's interesting. Smells nothing like a cigar. I'm half-tempted to grab a flake and chew on it to see what it tastes like (does anyone actually DO that???).

Got some cleaners, a Czech tool, matches, and a fellow Gorilla to fire-up with tonight. Wish me luck.

Oh, question - Pipe w/ Golden Cavendish first? Or cigar first?

how is Christmas cookie? it sounds nice

I like it. Has a vanilla cookie/creamy tobacco taste to it. Smokes dry, no bite, and the room note is great. Very high "wife approval factor".

Boswell's Peaches and Cream and Berry Cobbler are very good aromatics also.

Now that the weather is getting cooler my pipe smoking is becoming an indoor activity. This forces me to switch to wife approved tobaccos such as those mentioned above and Butternut Burley. I prefer a nice, smokey, latakia laden, GLPease, English kind of blend but she can't stand them. Life is full of little compromises.

I didnt detect any rum flavors like I expected, it had a very light if any casing, I did enjoyed it, sort of had a woodsy taste, either that or I was smoking the briar. Now I just fired up a bowl of H&H Anniversary Kake. Unfortunately though, I let it sit out to dry a little longer then I had planned tonight so it got to the almost crunchy dry stage. :( I'll give it another go tomorrow and not let it get so dry! Smokin pretty hot, I think Ill set it down for a few to cool down.

Hal O' th Wynd in a Sasieni 4dot bulldog. i mistakenly thought i had HOtW open every so often when it was Old Gowrie. now that i have them open, side-by-side, there's a definite flavor difference that i'll never mistake the one for the other again. i prefer HOtW due to the sweetness of the VAs that comes through more.

Nick
01-26-2009, 12:54 PM
I didn't like HOTW much because I thought it was a bit bland. Old Gowrie is a bit more "edgie" and complex to me and I like it better.

Curly Cut
01-26-2009, 01:06 PM
really?
i'll do a real side-by-side comparison. i think OG just seems a little more dusky, dry, and straw-like. i got more sweetness out of HOtW.
i doubt it was simply from cleaning my pipes over the weekend. ;)

How do you like that compared to fillmore? debating about ordering a tin of Tele Hill.

Curly Cut
01-27-2009, 03:00 PM
funny, someone asked me that earlier today.

i prefer Fillmore.
to me, Fillmore is sweeter (although it can hard to find it with all that Perique in your face). they are about even on Perique strength, with Fillmore being stronger, if i remember correctly. just that Telegraph Hill seems more 1 dimensional, where Fillmore has an underlying sweetness that you find as you get use to the blend. first time smokers of fillmore can't seem to get past the power of the perique (similar how i am to heavy latakia blends, that's all i taste is the latakia). i need to stock up on more Fillmore.

you want a bowl or three's worth of Telegraph Hill - PM me your addy.

Fillmore definitely has more perique in it. The TH was much softer on the Perique end of things. I only truly noticed it in the blend towards the bottom half of the bowl, and it was very small. I tried to puff on the TH a little hard to get the spice but it was only ever a whisper. The FIllmore on the other hand if puffed to hard is not very forgiving.
Plan on smoking two more bowls tonight then posting up the review.
