I had a bowl of "sweepings". Mostly VaPers with a little Balkan and some other stuff mixed in. Not bad stuff. The only problem is when it's great, there's little chance of reproducing it exactly.

Captain Bob's Blend in a Missouri Pride Cob, and in a Baraccini Tulip. This was my first smoke in the Tulip. I got it on special last year and just got around to using it. I did open up the airway and chamfered the end of the tenon because I have read in the past these pipes are not good smokers. I should have smoked it before making the mods...but it is a flawless smoker now that cost (at the time) around $30.

Is there that big a difference from the Murray Nightcap to the current production Nightcap? I haven't opened a tin of the current blend yet because I still have the old stuff :D That being said, I'd never put Gaslight above "Murray" Nightcap. It is good, but not that good IMHO. :2

I recently picked up a tin of Dunhill Nightcap and just now got around to trying it. I gotta say that it was delightful! If it weren't for my increasingly disappointing Kaywoodie, I would have enjoyed it better. I like the shape of the Kaywoodie, but it burns way too hot and the draw is tighter than I like. This baccy may just inspire me to smoke a pipe more often and find a replacement for the Kaywoodie.

Carter Hall in a cob past few days. Very good at what it does (which isn't much).

I've read complaints that most SG blends are very wet. I've had very little trouble with my tin though. Dry some and try it both ways. I've seen the same tobacco exhibit different flavors when dried vs. out of the tin.

I have a kaywoodie also. My main complaint of that pipe is the gurgle and slop around the stinger. Occasionally I get a taste of nicotine water. Nasty! It's to the point that I disassemble it and blow it out and run a cleaner while smoking a bowl. If I could only find a nice little apple like this that didn't gurgle....

It is one blend I keep a large jar of and don't plan on aging it. Russ in my opinion made a time machine with the blends. The Black House is what Balkan Sobranie, in his blending wizardry, had aged to after twenty + years as you know, and the White Knight is what he remembers Balkan Sobranie being in the late 70's. I WAS lucky enough to have it months before the official release. It is a blend that Russ is really proud of.

Today going through my desk I found some Tobacco that has been in here since 2009ish, I am not sure if it was Dec 09 or feb 10 somewhere between there I was sent some things from Holland and UK from a friend.

Anyway I thought I had long smoked all this tobacco and happy that I had just over a bowl left of some (Gawith, Hoggarth & Co) Coffee Caramel. That is what I am told it was from the UK. This tobacco was a nice treat today with my AM Coffee. I do admit I liked it more then my coffee. Ash in pipe and still 3/4 cup full of coffee..

i did find this tobacco to be alittle on the wet side, Smoked alittle hot in my slight caked Arlington Standard pipe. Ran 3 pipe cleaners through the pipe while smoking to keep it clean. I spent the better part of 2 hours smoking this. I found this to be a little light on the Coffee and very caramel rich in taste. Now I just need to find some more of this tobacco.

Hope you all enjoy your day

Smoking in a Dr. Grabow. Love this pipe and this TOBACCO. It smokes great in everything I have smoked it in. This tobacco has a Great Finish long lasting. In all honesty I could really cut down on how much I smoke tobacco by smoking this blend 2 times a day. I would be content. My wife loves the smell and while she was smoking a bowl says it is very smooth. For me this is close to House of Lords my Fav however there is no Turkish in this and no Perique in House of Lords so are different beasts. Yummm

Today has been a Grabow day. 8 pipes today. No smoking tomorrow or monday. We will see about Monday lol
Tonight smoking some Frog Morton on the Town, In a Vintage Dr. Grabow wire carved Starfire Bulldog. This pipe smokes great. and this Blend is perfect in this pipe. Truth is I haven't found a pipe I own that I can't smoke H&H or Frog Morton in yet.

Just have to wait to see what tomorrow brings after my hope brief stay under the DOC. So right now I am smoking some Hearth & Home Fusilier's Ration in a Dr. Grabow Golden Duke. Going to have to find a Gold Plate person to make the band gold again. For the age this pipe don't look to bad..

Today was a slow day for Pipe smoking. I am on my First. Was in Day Surgery at 9:15 out by 1pm, After a couple hour nap and a small dinner. I thought I would get back into the mix of things with my First Pipe, an Arlington Standard filled with some F&K Lancer Slices.
For me this is a Nice Va/Lat for me it seems very heavy on the Latakia. Not a Every day type of tobacco. One that I could put in my Rotation 2 or 4 times a week.

I'm giving pipes another try so I had some Dunhill Nightcap in a Grabow Silver Duke ¼ bent apple I just picked up. I like the smaller bowl on this. It was very good! I have another couple of estate pipes on the way. They're in really nice shape and I shouldn't have to do anything more than clean them. I have high hopes this time around as I have learned to dry out the baccy a bit first and it seems to have worked well. It was probably one of the most enjoyable pipes I've smoked; it was nice and cool and dry. :tu

I definitely seem to have the most luck with the English blends. I have a lot of tobacco and a few pipes coming. About 2/3 of the way through my tin of GLP Stratford and I'm excited to try some different VaPer blends. I'm particularly excited for the Escudo. I see that being tossed around on just about every forum and review site there is.

Loaded up a cob today with something that is from 2004 or before and never had enough time to go outside to sit long enough to smoke it. On the go all day long. MAYBE in the next couple of hours or in the morning.

I truly do not know what the tobacco is. A friend of mine gave me his pipe tobacco in 2004 and this is from one of the bags which were not marked. Chances are it is not going to be smoked completely. So far, a couple of the "no name" bags haven't been worth keeping IMHO.

Got my new Mark Twain cob today. It is rather large with a smaller bowl. The walls are the thickest I've ever seen on a cob. Since the bowl is fairly narrow, I'm going to dedicate it to Virginia's.

James,

Thanks!

The first bowl seems to be smoking really smooth and sweet. I decided to leave the filter in for now, until I can get a new stem for it. My thoughts were the filter may help with some of the residues or other junk left over in the bowl. I don't think I've ever used a filter, but I gotta say it doesn't really seem to reduce the flavor at all, from what I can tell. Is it better to use a filter? What's the point?

That's a great looking Mark Twain cob Brian. I like the thick walls on the bowl. Here's some measurements on the diameter and inside bowl depth:

Chamber diameter: .75 in/19.05 mm
Chamber depth: 1.625 in/41.275 mm

I've never used a filter myself, but you may want to go ahead and smoke a few bowls with the filter, then remove the filter and smoke a few more bowls of the same pipe tobacco to ascertain if there is indeed a difference.

Again, nice looking cob my friend:tu

Great advise from Mark there, I would smoke a few with and a few without and see what one you like better. I know that there are some people that smoke really fast and hard. They tend to like the filters to help keep the tobacco or ash from getting into the mouth. Under normal use I like to smoke without the filter. If I am going to mow the lawn or do something where I can forget to take it slow I too use a filter just in case I draw to hard. I don't like ash in the mouth lol... If it is a wet blend, The ash most times don't make it to far past the shank.. Another reason I use a filter if I am out mowing is I don't have to worry about running a pipe cleaner in the pipe. I can just smoke away.

Mark--Thanks, I couldn't find the dimensions on the MM site, but admittedly I didn't look very hard either. I thought the bowl would be bigger though. It's not as wide as my country gentleman bowls. It smoked really great though.

James--That's good advice. My forever stems won't take a filter, but I have all the original stems, so maybe I'll keep a few filters on hand for some of the reasons you state. Are you not supposed to run a cleaner though while the filter is in?

I can't wait for my new tobaccos to get delivered.

It's a very light aromatic by GLP. Burley based and very tasty. It's not overly aromatic, retaining much of the tobacco flavor and has a good room note. I like it a lot and coming from cigars I also like the English blends.

On my regular supply run to the Granite State, I had an opportunity to stop at a great pipe and tobacco shop called Gold Leaf on Rt. 1 (Lafayette Rd.) in Hampton. I found them by checking out the GLP website and they were listed as a stockist. What a great shop! The proprietor is gentleman right out of Central Casting; he looks like he was born with a pipe in his mug. He mostly sells pipes, pipe tobacco and accessories, but he has some cigars. I bought his last tin of GPL Barbary Coast and got some good advice about gurgling pipes; counter sink the tenon. Another shop patron called it "G-Forcing". :pi

A bowl full of Father Dempsey Blend from Kramers Pipe and Tobacco Shop in Beverly Hills. Good stuff:tu Smoked this in the unknown billiard estate pipe that I'm refurbishing to tighten the tenon in the mortise. Appears to be doing the job. Maybe a few more bowls and then I'll get rid of it (maybe)...

Let me know how you like the BC. I just smoked a bowl on the way in to work and continue to really enjoy it.

Also, since you gravitate toward the English blends, be sure to try GLP's Gaslight. I got a few samples of it with some tin orders and enjoyed it very much. I plan to buy a few tins on my next shopping spree:)

What does "counter sink the tenon" mean?

More Frog Morton On the Town. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of buying and using this brebbia pipe cleaner/sweetner stuff and all I taste is mint. Lesson for the day: NEVER USE BREBBIA MINT SWEETNER!!!!!

This stuff is so strong it masks even the latakia. Dang. Hopefully it will go away after this bowl and a cleaning with everclear. =(

What does "counter sink the tenon" mean?

I'm smoking some BC in my new Ropp Silhouette prince. I like it! I have it in a tobacco jar I picked-up on the 'Bay. I'll post pix tomorrow in the purchase thread. Counter-sinking a tenon is actually just like it sounds: use a drill bit, by hand, to open the opening of the tenon such that it's funnel shaped. I imagine that it smooths out the air flow.
Wow, this BC stays lit and cool. The pipe, itself, is silent. I'm learning to time my puffs with my breathing and it helps a lot. Gaslight caught my eye and the description sounds good, so I was looking at that, as well. It caught my eye, because I like the movie so I got the reference. I still have a couple of tobaccos sitting around that I haven't tried yet: the Iwan Ries Three Star Blue that they sent free with the Ropp (another crossover, from the description), and the Comoy's Cask Nº 2 (a bit more aromatic). I'll probably get to them in the next couple of days. I'm only smoking a half bowl as its the pipe's first smoke, but this BC develops a bit as you go.:pi Thanks again for the help, everyone! :tu

I got a couple new cobs. Another mark twain, but bent this time to fit a churchwarden stem. Also the new 5th avenue diplomat. Just a taller version of the regular diplomat.

I haven't been smoking as much lately, because I recently got invisalign and it seems to really make them taste disgusting and I can only take them out for a maximum of 2 hours per day.

It is ok. Most people seems to slow down this time of year I think anyway. Most do to weather or could be just all the shopping lOL.....

Escudo I like it a lot. Not something that I would use as a goto but a every other day smoke is great. Hope you are all staying warmer then I am right now. WOW tonight going to be 1. burrrr.
Glad I smoke inside now. Before I would have to break out the Propane heater and stay warm while smoking even in the snow. Drive my son nuts sometimes because he don't like the cold lOL. He loves cigars so he would never miss a cigar time, Pipe he would be like na not this time lOL.... So maybe 2 a day where I was smoking 5 to 6.... Now while home I can smoke all day long no matter the year..

Next month is my 2 year Anni. I will have to get a nice cigar for my wife and I to enjoy our day.

Smoking some Escudo in a MM Cob today. Wanted smaller bowl then my normal 622KS. Very nice smoking pipe and tobacco combo as well..

A bowl of H&H Marquee Sweet & Savory. Nice pipe blend. Floral notes and mild sweetness which gave way to "Haddo" like flavors. This all settled in when the Kentucky Dark Fire mildly started to jump in to the mix. Second half of the bowl, the flavors kept jumping back and forth to the end. Easy to keep lit. Really a nice smoke in the Mark Twain cob:pi
