So..been on the HCG diet for a week now and I'm down 17 lbs. I know it sounds like a huge number for one week but remember I'm a huge guy, lol. 422 and now 405. Now I have to start getting my ass outside after dinner for at least a walk. In a month or two I should be in better shape to start the gym again.

Nicely done Mike and Travis!
I'm quickly learning that water is the name of the game.
Scott, I tried no coffee one day last week and had a monster headache all day.
Today I brought half of what I normally bring and twice the water.
I also for the first time packed my whole days worth of food with me.
The real challenge will be not to eat it all by 3PM!

Little steps, my man. If it takes time to change stuff you're doing so that you can begin to lose weight, that's all part of the game. The little changes mean a lot.
I never thought about the no coffee headache. I can remember my ex drank so much iced tea that she'd get a headache without it. I suppose you have to taper off a bit. Half the coffee is great. Maybe in a week or two you can cut it in half again?
I drink Maxwell House Lite. It's got half the caffiene. I brew it weak and use lots of milk and water in it. It really isn't coffee at all when I'm done with it, but it's no good for me anyways, so I'm okay with it.
I'm just happy that you're well on your way and you're not giving up.
Don't forget that changes sometimes come with negative consequences, so don't be so concerned with the weight loss just yet. Be concerned with getting ready for it. You're doing great with that part so far, and this thing takes lots of time. Lots and lots of time. :D

Well, I finally decided it's time to get off of my duff and start shedding the pounds. I'm not happy that I gained back all of the weight I lost since I got down to 170 in 2007. I want my energy back. I miss the feeling of running whenever I wanted, never having heartburn, and my knees not hurting. So, this time I'm giving myself an incentive that I think will do the trick. I've decided to not allow myself to smoke another cigar until I lose 25 lbs. Then I can smoke one, but after it's done it'll be back on the wagon for another 25 lbs. I'm going to do that hopefully 4 times and then I'll be around 175 (currently I'm just under 276).
Today I smoked the last stick that was in my humi, an El Baton 6x60. It was damn good, too. :dr That will probably be the one I choose 25 pounds from now.
I'm doing my best to avoid soda of any kind too. I went 30 days without any, then this past week I had a few but nowhere near the level I was drinking them before.
So, here goes. Good luck to all who are already on this road, and I hope to catch up at some point.:tu

Welcome aboard. May I suggest that when you lose your first 25 that you smoke for at least a week? Cigars are too good to only smoke ONE every 25 lbs lost. That's gonna be a long wait between cigars after the first 25.

Tough break on being stuck in Paradise with awesome food you can't eat, Pierogi King. :r
I started losing weight when Lisa and I went on our honeymoon in Punta Cana. The food was ever-present and awesome. The restaurants were all amazing, but with multiple course fancy food the portions were small.
That really helped me. It really drove home the fact that food is around all the time and I don't have to eat like it's my last meal every time I sit down.
I lost weight on my vacation, changed my "how much I eat" habits, and haven't changed back. I swear, everything I do is bass-ackwards. :D

I couldn't find the pierogis, so I went with pigs-in-the-blanket (or galumpki for real polanders). Then as soon as I dug them out, I found the pierogis.

Found a great Italian place last night not that far from the hotel. Not that much of a Italian meal, more Spanish to be precise, but very good. Welcome Laura!
I came home last night starving!
I walked through the door and headed straight to the kitchen and was searching wildly for anything to stuff in my face.
My wife came over, told me to jump in the shower, and she would whip something up for me.
She Lied!
I got out, and she said, I didn't need to eat and I should just go to bed. I listened.
I woke up this morning still hungry.
I stopped at a 7-11 and grabbed a banana.
I shoved the banana down my throat with all the grace of a B Actress looking for her big break.
In the end, I feel like a huge fatso for not being able to control my appetite,
but I'm happy I grabbed the banana instead of the sausage egg and cheese I wanted.

Lots and lots of people have died from all protein diets, Myles. Be sure to look at that side. I'm not trying to dissuade you from your diet choice at all, just make sure to get all the angles and be careful. I don't want to see you get sick, that'd be awful. I just happened to run into some info about death rates of folks on no-carb diets in a book that's in our downstairs bathroom yesterday.
I agree completely that the low fat mania is BS, too.
We're omnivores. We need lots of things to keep us healthy.
I'm in the odd position where my neurological disorder is intolerant of potassium. All meat is full of potassium, and I have to avoid it. I'm on a high-carb low-potassium diet. Despite that, I still eat some meat even though it
causes me very considerable pain. I'm not gonna get sick over a diet that's just not right for my body at any cost. Just doesn't make sense.

I somewhat agree with you Myles on the whole fat is bad for you mantra. Funny how the whole "low-fat" boom during the 80-90's lead to ever increasing waistlines. What was added back in after the fat was removed? Sugar. Too much sugar in your diet if not burned off get's stored as fat. Imagine that.
I think carbs have their place in a diet. Mostly for a western diet though, they're not as necessary since we lead more sedentary lifestyles. If we're not burning off the excess fuel, we don't need to take in as much. That's just my $.02. I'm not a doctor, but i did stay at a hotel last night, but not a Holiday Inn.
Chainsaw13
05-19-2011, 06:05 AM
Myles, have you seen the documentary, "Fathead"? It was meant to debunk the whole myth behind the documentary, "Super Size Me". It has some holes in it, but does bring up some good questions about high fat diets and how they could be good for you.

05-19-2011, 06:08 AM
I agree that complex carbs can have a place in a diet, for example an ectomorph who is naturally skinny and uses a lot of energy probably benefits from carbs as part of an energy source, but a guy like myself who just sits around all day in an office has no use for them, and if i did, i could still get them from healthy vegatables and stuff
ie, we all agree :)

Thanks Dom. It's taken me a while to get there. I started out walking 2 miles at a time, about a 16:30 mi/min average. I'm now up to 3miles or so at a time, doing about a 14:45 mi/min avg. Excellent. :tu
It's been a long time since I read any of the Atkins stuff, well over five years. My brother-in-law and I both lost lots of weight, only to put it back on. It wasn't the diet's fault.
The "I can eat all I want without regard to portion" thing really got in my head, and if anything it just worsened my habits. I abused the mojo cause it worked. Once I tired with the diet, I regained all the weight I lost and lots more. Ugh. :)

I love it. Loved it when I was a kid, even. That and Diet 7up. They had a citrus drink called Rondo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rondo_(soft_drink)) that I liked, too. It was around 30 some-odd years ago, I have no idea when it disappeared. There were two kinds, I remember just liking the one in the yellow can.

Breakfast gets your metabolism going in the morning, Laura. It's a key to doing this. Protein shakes are great and there are so many varieties that you can make in order to keep from getting bored with them.:tu Keep it up!:)
I have a hard time with breakfast.
I get up at 4 am start work at 6 and my first blow isn't until 9
Thats when I eat, a full 5hrs after I get up.
The other morning when I grabbed that banana at the store before my ride in, I was out of my mind hungry by 7:30.
I don't know which is worse for me!

I am like you Dom, I would get up and get going then settle down about 3 to 4 hours later for breakfast. I have found that 5 oz of milk with a protien mix, I use the one that is part of the Biggest looser plan. This takes me until 11 to noon, I do this at 7am.

Jesus, seriously Dom? That's a big problem right there. Is there anyway to get around this? Most people recommend 6-8 hours of sleep for effective weightloss. If you are only getting three hours of sleep, your body needs extra calories to survive.
If you can't work around it, good luck, but if there's anything you can change to get some more sleep each night, try to do so.

As for me, after a week on a sales trip, i was worried, and it was the longest i went since i started trying without weighing myself, but happy i lost about 2 lbs. Good thing too, because i thought i was on a plateau and was about to have a crazy cheat meal to try and remedy it, but now that i saw the 2 lbs off i continued sticking to it. This is the longest ive stuck to anything (almost 4 weeks now), besides the time i lost it all like 10 years ago

Don't worry too much Andy and Kirk. It's a marathon, not a sprint.
One tip for eating that I find helps me eat less is to put down my fork in between each bite, or food for that matter if eating in hand. It gives you time to savor each bite and time for your body to tell itself that it's full.

That 2.2 lbs. the last week would be an awesome average. It might settle down a little lower, but if it stayed, that'd be sweet.
I usually lose around 1.6 lbs a week (or did in the past, I haven't tracked any numbers this time at all), and it's always steady. I'm getting more active so I try to eat a bit more to match it. I don't usually eat odd stuff at all, and don't binge except maybe at Family Day where I eat tiny bits all day until I finally can't eat another bite, but that never amounts to moving the scale one way or another.

down here to the lowest ive been in a while, still wanna get lower, but its nice to see the results come, even if they're coming slower than i'd like. It's been over a month since i've been doing atkins (modified for what i can do) - it's the longest i've ever stuck to a new eating plan.
The nice thing about the new atkins is that its not like the old one where its just high protein, on this new one you are supposed to eat like 6 cups of salad greens and 2 cups of the right cooked vegetables a day, plus the good fats like olive oil etc, although i've been enjoying some cheese and cream cheese too, and even whipped cream with splenda! And too much protein can actually hinder fat loss. Amazing book the new one is. I recommend it to anyone that wants to try this, or if its something you're not interested in, it's just a good read, and you'll learn a lot. Anyway, not going to lie - this is easy, effective, and awesome :) muahaha.

Question:
Since I've been on a plateau for about a month now, would it be feasible to follow the Atkins for about two to three weeks in order to shake things up and then revert back to my regular diet (which is just a scaled back bit of everything)?

Mayo Clinic says reassess your habits. Increase your workouts.
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/weight-loss-plateau/MY01152
Try counting your calories for a day or two (best a week) and see what your average is. And then calculate what your caloric intake should be for your desired weight. At first when losing weight cutting back on what you eat helps allot..but from past experience you'll need to cut back again before you get to your goal weight.
Atkins might work too, but I think in the long run, try to find a way to either increase your workouts a bit or decrease your calories...or both.
:tu:tu:tu Keep at it!

I'm not a doctor, but there could be many reasons for a plateau, and sure you could do atkins for 2 weeks, but going off it and starting to eat the **** that is absolute garbage for you ie bread, pasta, sugar is just going to make you gain it back. I'm not a doctor tho, but i'm doing this for life.

I wouldn't call it garbage or ****, just not what is perscribed for the Atkins diet. But that's my question. If I only do it for two weeks and then go back to my low portioning/lower fat content diet, will it reverse the effects of the two weeks on the Atkins?

Sorry Andy, can't really help you with the Atkins questions. I doubt it could hurt, but I'm guessing you'd not see any real benefits if you only do it two weeks. I think it takes that long for your body to get into ketosis (Myles, correct me if I"m wrong), where it's starting to burn it's fat stores for energy.
I would go with Kirk's suggestion and change up your workout. That's the major concept behind systems like Insanity and P90x. Over time you're body will get used to the routine. Need to change it up to keep it guessing.
Nice job Earl. I'm hoping to get to that level some day.

I believe Bob is right Andy. I think Atkins is meant to be a lifestyle change not a temporary thing. You can get into ketosis fairly quickly bob, but if yiou're just going to go off it soon after, i IMAGINE, that you'll just gain back everything you lost.
Andy, as for calling Bread, Pasta, Sugar as Garbage or Sh1t, i didn't mean to offend you and hope i didn't. It's just my opinion that these foods don't have a positive benefit for someone trying to lose weight unless they are an extreme ectomorph and cardio machine, like a kenyan marathon runner. Just my opinion tho :)

I wasn't offended, just clarifying. There's also some foods that are totally allowed with low carb dieting (not sure about Atkins) that are pure bad for you too, such as greasy bacon and sausage. I love them though.:dr It goes both ways.

They eat products labeled low fat or reduced fat. Those labels are misleading and at other times outright lies. Low fat means eating more natural foods really. Lean meats, fruits and vegetables are all low fat.
I definitely agree with you about natural foods. Processed foods are what is wrong with our health now.

Reading Michael Pollan's books have really opened my eyes to how our "food" is currently made. It's not by chefs or cooks, but by scientists who break down the raw product into so many different parts, only to use a formula to put it all back together to get a finished product. I'm sorry, but that's not food.

Andy, I think you'd just get lots of extra fat from the meats that will get stored as fat because your body is running on the carbs you take in.
Meaning you'd put on mass and gain weight.
At least that's how I understand it.
You have to eliminate carbs, or severely restrict them for your body to start using your fat stores, then you can run on that for a long time.
That's a wildly pared down explanation of what Atkins does.

I had my weigh in Sunday, down a pound. (271.7)
Not bad considering Saturday I gorged myself at my first BBQ of the season.
I cooked my first whole pig and managed to throw my back out lugging it around, so I've been inactive ever since.
Going to be really picky about what I eat this week in an attempt to make up for the inability to move.

Yeah. I don't eat nothin but maybe a bowl of cereal, a sammich or light dinner, and maybe a poptart a day, so it doesn't add up to much.

I am happy. Down to a weight i haven't seen in a long time. Lost 16.5 lbs so far on this thing i'm doing, and it's been about 6 weeks now. It's tough to be losing at a rate which i consider slow, because of how rapidly it came off last time (10-12 years ago) - but in reality, for health reasons, it's not slow - 2.75 lbs a week is normal - good :D

About two weeks I'm thinking, Andy.
So far I have 3 days in plans and this is day 4 on digging, backfilling, and cleaning up.
The sidewalk will take 2 or 3 days, building the deck, at least a week to ten days. Lisa's Dad is helping me with that.
Once the sidewalk is poured, I'm stopping so I can get my garden in. It'll be the little strip along the house by the new sidewalk. Next year I'll get a real garden in, but this will have to suffice for now.
Once I get the deck done, I'll get back to work and finish my shop. Then I gotta build a shed somewhere along the line. Come Fall I can rest. :D
Today I'm sore as ****. All I did so far was move some dirt. I'm gonna get out there and move a bit more just to stay loose. My help took the day off, so I'm gonna take it easy, too. :D
The good thing is that I'm...
A.) Getting back in shape.
B.) Losing weight.

Finally made it home from my South American odyssey. Yesterday was a bad day for me. Woke up with severe indigestion from something I ate on Thursday. I'm going to talk to my doctor when I see him Tuesday about possible gall bladder issues. It got so bad, I didn't eat hardly anything yesterday, just a small roll on the plane and sipped some pop/water. It finally passed sometime during the middle of the night, but boy did it make for a fun plane ride. I had a bit of the breakfast they served, half a banana and a few bites of a egg/cheese sandwich. Finally eating a bit now that I'm home.
The good news, down to 234. I'm sure a couple lbs were from yesterday and I'll probably put them back on, but i'm still going in the right direction.

Had my first 3 month checkup with the doc this morning. Good news all around. My blood sugar A1C went from a 9.6 to a 5.3, putting me in the normal range. I still need to keep doing what I'm doing, but it's working.
My cholesterol dropped from 200 to 153, with a big drop in the LDL's. Also had a drop in the HDL's which is about the only bad news. Guess I need to get more fish at the market.
Now I just need the motivation to clean up the basement so i can start working out down there.

Last fall looked in the mirror and got motivated.
Since September have been doing push-ups. Started with 5 I think. Have worked my way up to 250 a day. 150 in the morning (100 then 50) and 100 at night.
It helped the way I felt and increased my suit size from 44L to 46L. Added some 12 pound hand weight sets to the mix.
Unfortunately, early April stood on the scale and saw 260 - nice muscular shoulders and this giant gut. Decided to start eating sensibly and doing some cardio.
Have a 25 year old Schwinn Airdyne in the basement. Started riding it again in April. Started at 10 minutes, am up to 30 minutes @4. For anyone who knows these things, its pretty "aerobic". 15 years ago used to ride it at 5-6, but such is life, or more specifically the desire to remain alive.
Lost 10 pretty quick. Then it started getting harder. Got to 230 a week or 2 ago and then started bouncing up and down. This was riding the bike every other/3 days. So, started riding 5 days a week and moving from 1500 to around 1200 calories a day - weekdays, I eat what I want when we are at the shack which means +4 lbs every weeekend that takes a few days back to get off.
The reduced calories and upping the cardio to 30 minutes seems to have made a difference. Hit 226 this morning. Exercise alone has never done it for me... you add muscle mass and tend to eat more absent paying attention to your calorie intake.
When I started my goal was 225. Figure I hit it tomorrow so adjusting to 215 as the new goal.

I hit a new low this week and was reluctant to share, but now 2 days later I'm back to doing what I need to, and thats the important part.
On Monday, despite breaking the 270 mark for the first time in God knows how many years, the ice cream truck caught my eye.
I broke down and bought a vanilla cone from him.
The real sad part is I tailed him in my car for about 3 miles before he stopped and I could get one.
After I licked my fingers clean I was racked with guilt.
What kind of maniac stalks an ice cream truck?

Don't fret too much Dom, we all give in at times. While in Argentina the last few weeks, I had pizza, ice cream and these caramel filled cookies they make down there. It's hard to go cold turkey on everything, so little indulgences on occassion aren't a bad thing. They can actually help you keep on the right track. The key is to only have them rarely.

I absolutely have to eat, Myles. Fasting just makes my neural condition worse. I found a diet page that's basically what I have to do. It's right here. (http://hkpp.org/general/hyperkpp_diet.html)
I don't have HKPP or Paramyatonia Congenita like that diet is targeted to, I have Potassium Aggravated Myotonia (it has lots more names, as well). It's right in the same ballpark, it's from a defect in the same gene. My symptoms are just a bit different and accompanied by a lot more pain. The trade-off is that I get to live a long, happy life, even if it's full of doctors and pills. :tu

I realized yesterday that I lost 20 pounds from March 8th (our honeymoon) to June 8th. So that's 3 months. All I did is focused on my water, avoid high potassium cause I have to, and made my meals smaller. I can even eat between meals if I get hungry. Portions are the key, and praying away the compulsion to overeat is another big part.

One last thing...
Here's the Mushroom Burger Recipe (http://americanfood.about.com/od/vegetarian/r/Mushroom_Burger.htm).
Mushroom Veggie Burger Recipe
Photo © John Mitzewich
This mushroom burger recipe is adapted from "Lisa's Mushroom Burger" from weheartfood.com (http://weheartfood.com/), and to call it a veggie burger doesn't do it justice. Veggie burger recipes tend to be bland and boring, but this meaty mushroom burger is anything but.
Makes 4 Large or 6 Smaller Mushroom Veggie Burgers
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes
Ingredients:
3 tbsp olive oil
1 1/2 lb mushrooms, roughly chopped (combination of crimini, shiitake, and Portobello)
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
6 cloves minced garlic
2/3 cup rolled oats
1/3 cup shredded Parmesan
3/4 cup breadcrumbs
2 eggs, beaten
1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley, or 1 tsp dried parsley flakes
1 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
Preparation:
Heat 1 tbsp oil in large saucepan. Saute the mushrooms, onions and garlic over medium heat for about 10 minutes, or until the liquid boils off, and the mushrooms begin to saute.
In large bowl, add mushroom mixture to oats, Parmesan, breadcrumbs, eggs, parsley, oregano, salt and pepper. Mix well. Allow to sit for 15 minutes to develop the flavors. Shape into patties. Heat 2 tbsp oil in large non-stick skillet, over medium heat. Fry patties, cooking about 5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
Serve with your favorite burger toppings.

Eating more may not slow you down, unless you eat **** like pastries and sugar.
Often on "diets" the thing people do is restrict calories, and bodies don't like that, they hang on to it more!

Bought a set of Bowflex adjustable dumbbells yesterday. Now to clean up the basement and setup the TV/DVD so I can start the P90 program (precurser to P90x). I can tell I've lost some muscle mass with the weight loss. All the walking's built up the leg muscles a bit, got some definition in the thighs but losing it up top in the arms/chest. The work schedule will make it tough to do the full 90 days in a row, but I'll give it my best shot. Would be nice to have it complete by my birthday at the end of September.
Went out yesterday and bought basically a new wardrobe. Replaced all my fat pants and bought a bunch of new ones for work. All the old stuff is either being pitched or donated. Was kinda cathartic clearing it all out. I figure by getting rid of it all, it lessens the chance of me going back to that size. Only downside is this could be temporary too as I plan to lose more. I could be doing this all over again in 3 months. I"m good with that though.

I think I finally realized I need an idiot proof diet that tells you and gives you what to eat, basically no choices except for one lean and green meal a day.I'll try really hard to stick with it until the SH, when I know I'm gonna ease up a bit to enjoy the wonderful eats there. But, I'll still hafta be careful and not over do it. Hopefully I'll have dropped a fair amount of weight by then! Reading the stories here has been very inspirational, hopefully I will one day be able to add to that portfolio!

Bob, in that movie, they talk about a lot of oil being not good for you.
Things that aren't natural, like when you mash up corn, you dont get oil, so how the heck do we get Corn Oil?
I need to look into this and figure out what oils are bad, corn? Canola? And if Olive oil really is good.
Biggest thing i've learned is that the conventional ideas we have about whats good and not good for us are total B.S. - that's why ive really got to figure out this oil thing asap!

Anything in large quantities won't be good for you, including oils. I still don't know if I subscribe to the belief that having oils/fats in your diet makes you fat. Seems that as people have gone to low fat, high carb/sugar diets, the obesity rate has jumped.
I'd be interested to hear what you find Myles. As for me, I pretty much use olive oil exclusively, with some canola oil at times.

Joining in. I'm on the Wii Fit Plus and work-your-ass-off-in-a-yogurt-plant program. I'm trying to eat healthier (free yogurt helps) and drink plenty of water. So far I'm down 4 lbs in 6 days.

Well, i actually e-mailed the Drs. Eades, so we'll see if i get a reply. The belief that fat makes you fat is unfounded, and proven time and time again to be untrue. Fat satiates us, and makes us non hungry, and also helps our body burn existing fat (assuming one doesnt eat it in ridiculous quantities)
You are right - low fat automatically means higher carbs, and the fatty rate has most definitely increased, and they are directly related.
Notice that A.D.D didn't used to exist back when people fed their kids real butter, and real milk, instead of this modern day experimentation stuff? Anyway i can't prove that, but the writing is on the wall.
If i find anything i'll let ya know !

Welcome Hugh and Jeff!!! :tu
Hugh, don't sweat the "great stuff at Shack" thing. I've found that my stomach just can't hold as much, period. Even when I eat what I now consider a lot, or way overdone, it really isn't. I just simply can't eat near as much as I used to, even if I try. They call that the stomach shrinking effect, I suppose that's as good a thing to call it as any.
I lost 20 pounds in the last 3 months, starting at 223. You're bigger than me, and from watching this thread it seems that bigger guys lose lots of weight really fast at first, then taper when they get closer to what might be their "natural weight".
As long as you're headed in a positive direction and continue working at it, I really don't think it matters how quick it comes off. Just keep hanging in there!!! :tu

Nice work Jeff. Keep it going. Gotta love free yogurt. I eat that almost every weekday for breakfast, along with some fruit and maybe a english muffin with some creamcheese.
Anyone else watch "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution"? Great program if you ask me.

Welcome Hugh. Good luck with the weightloss goal. You've done the hardest part already, making the decision to get started. Not saying the rest will be easy, but stick with it and you'll get there in no time.
Scott's right about bigger guys taking it off faster at the beginning. Just don't get discouraged if you don't see big numbers ever week. There will be that period after about the first 3-4 weeks where the body says "Whoa, what's going on here?" and you won't lose much or possibly go up. It's your bodies defense mechanism to the change. It's been so used to carrying the extra weight and caloric intake for so long. Just get through that hump and you'll be on your way.

I've been reading The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson. The book looks at nutrition from the viewpoint that people did not evolve to eat grains, how how a diet high in grains and processed foods wreck havoc on out blood sugar, and that is what causes huge huge appetites and crashes from increased insulin in the blood. The author recommends consuming between 50-100 grams of carbohydrates from fruit and vegetables for fat loss, and 100-150 for maintaining body weight.
I've been following these guidelines pretty closely and have seen some pretty impressive results in the last 2 weeks.

I'll have to look at the library for that book Derrick. Myself, I"m taking in about 100-120 grams per day and losing weight. I just made the mushroom burger Scott posted a couple of days ago. Modified the recipe a bit to lower the carb level, turned out pretty good. I don't think I needed both eggs though. Still a very wet mix, but I can fix it for next time.

Nice work Jeff. Keep it going. Gotta love free yogurt. I eat that almost every weekday for breakfast, along with some fruit and maybe a english muffin with some creamcheese.
I work nights, so my routine's a little backwards. When I get home in the morning, I hit the Wii Fit for about a half-hour, then have a cup of yogurt for dinner before I crash for the day. My "breakfast" is dinner, and I've been scaling back my portions.
I've found that I have to eat something at work or my weight will actually go up, so I make sure to bring something like a Clif Bar to snack on during my lunch break. I also bring a couple of Gatorade bottles of ice water to reduce the temptation to grab a soda from the vending machine.

Ok, I am still here. Not doing so well, gained back the 2 lbs I lost. But I am keep my promise to eat breakfast when I get up. :) I also got my bike out and have ridden 3 out of 4 days. I found Runkeeper, so far I really like it.

Runkeeper is a great app. It's what I use too. Very simple to use and I like how it runs in the background so you can use other apps, change music, etc.
Don't get discouraged Laura. Just keep with the exercise and watch what you eat. In no time you'll start seeing it drop off.

Another 3.3 lbs according to Wii Fit Plus. I worked last night in a department with me and another guy watching 6 machines. They weren't behaving, so I was on the run all night. Just finished my workout, time for a shower, yogurt, and bed.

In a little over a year, I've managed to drop 70lbs (290 to 220) while losing 14% body fat (34% to 20%). Eating about 2000 cals per day (with one cheat day per week), working out 7 days a week (5 days of cardio, 2 days of core/strength).
After I reached my goal of 220 in March 2011, I started eating 3000 cals (or so) per day and working out 5 days per week (3 with personal trainer for strength and 2 days of cardio). I've managed to gain 3lbs and I've lost 1.4% body fat in 3 months. Also took some measurements in May and will remeasure in July to see how I'm progressing as well.
Hoping to stay around 220(ish) while dropping off some more body fat and gaining muscle over the next year or so, but no real specific goals other then to maintain and enjoy my new look! :D

Awesome Sean. I'm hoping to do the same thing as well. Unofficial weigh-in this morning of 227.6. I only had ~1300 calories yesterday, although I ate a lot. Mostly veggies though, so lots of volume just not that many calories.

I've been doing mostly cardio (with some yoga for warm-up/cool-down), but I've been thinking of throwing some strength into the mix. Did you do two days in a row of strength, or did you space them out?

Congrats!!! 290? :su My high point was 260 mid April. 224 this morning. Old guys need to do less calories so have been on a 1000-1500 calorie regimin for the past couple with massive cheating on the weekends. Goal was 225 adjusted to 215 now. Hope to be there before the 4th, cuz it'll be ugly on the 5th or 6th. :)
Put the "fat Dave" clothes away about a month ago. Getting to the point where I may need to buy some "skinny Dave" ones pretty soon.

Ouch! According to the Wii, I gained 3.7 lbs on my night off. Is this the bounceback effect I've read about? We did have a meat-lovers pizza for dinner last night, but I only ate two slices (down from my usual 4).
Just out of curiosity, I redid the body test after my 30 min workout, and apparently lost a pound.

Bravo, Dave! I hope to be under 300 by the SH! And at my goal by the next one! But, as has been said- losing weight is the easy part- keeping it off is the real challenge!
Jeff- there are SO MANY variables in daily weighing- you need to weigh once a week wearing the same amount of clothing to get a good comparison. Your pizza was likely salty- so much of that weight gain was likely water weight. So, no worries, my friend.
Day three on Medifast for me. So far, so good. Looking forward to my Friday weigh-in. Was at Red Robin yesterday and was a good boy- just a grilled chicken salad with low cal dressing in very small amounts, and forwent the croutons. Can't say I'm not hungry, but so be it!

Daily weigh ins can be depressing. Sometimes they dont reflect the effort we put in.
I do it but tend to use it as motivation before a workout. (Pre workout weigh ins help push the cardio a bit for me). Typically, I lose 1.5-2 lbs in my hour long routine. Of course much of it it gets gained back by drinking a bunch of water after wards.
Weighed the same 224 this morning as yesterday, after hitting it hard last night and consuming about 900 calories yesterday. The body is a fickle thing. Smoked 3 cigars yesterday - maybe nicotine helops retain water, who knows.
Figure if I stick with it, sometime late next week or 2 should break the 220 barrier for the first time. We are gaining muscle mass along with losing fat so ... in reality losing 35 pounds might be more like 50 pounds of fat ... netting 15 pounds of muscle out of the mix.
Feeling better about yourself is just as important as getting fitter, slimmer etc.

203.0 today. Won't be long till I hit the 190's. By Saturday, I'd think. The boss is away at work and I don't eat much at all when she's not home, mostly cause I'm lazy.
Tonight I'll probably have rice or noodles which will be my food for the day, aside from maybe a couple fun-size Butterfingers and a pop-tart.
Yesterday I had a subway. Half for lunch, half for dinner. Four cookies and a pop-tart, too. I worked hard all day throwing dirt, so it was a good weight losing day.
