That four roses sounds awesome. Way to go on the Weller. It just so happens that my local called me today saying they had a bottle for me. The new cork top one as well. I think I need to have a drink of my open bottle of the 107 again soon. I’ve been reaching for the McKenna too often.

Do you drink a good bit of this? I am curious whether or not you can tell a difference after the label change. Some folks say they cheapened it when it when from hand filled to rapid pour assembly line. Personally, I cannot tell a bit of difference .

Scored a bottle of willet rye and pot still while in KY this weekend. Still searching for the family estate bourbon. Will get back to KY sometime over the year to keep adding to the collection.

Going to try some of this tonight. It's from a place a couple of towns over. The owner goes up to Bourbon country several times a year, tastes a bunch of casks, and selects some to be bottled for his store. I've tried about six different offerings and all have been great. This'll be the first from Maker's Mark I've tried.

Andrew, I'd rank them:

Blanton's
Elijah Craig Barrel Proof
Four Roses Single Barrel

The other 4 are good to fair. I'll buy Contradiction, High West and Bulleit again as they're good for the price. Definitely won't be buying Redemption again.

Those Elijah Craig Barrel Proof offerings are some of the smoothest high octane whiskies I've ever had. I had one early last year that was something like 132 proof and with a just a splash of water went down with not a bit of burn.

I've got the A119 and B519 releases, James, they're 135 and 122 proof respectively. I agree with you 100% about the smoothness, I think the 135 proof is even smoother than the other.

I actually liked the dark rye, but I'm a big fan of port...not an everyday drinker of the dark rye, but a bottle of it around for a change of pace drink suits me well...also think it goes really well with a nice cigar!....The finished bourbons can be hit or miss...like scotches finished in other barrels, like sherry, etc....but I like Sherry, she was a good time...

That it is. It may be my favorite whiskey, period. I even prefer it to the Midleton bottlings (which, if you look closely at my avatar, that's what's in my hand). One of the best comparisons between 18-year Jameson and Midleton I ever read was a reviewer who wrote "Midleton is the bottle you have on your bar to impress your friends. Jameson 18-Year is the bottle you have to savor every drop."

Not familiar with Booker Shinny Barrel, please tell us more.

Booker is a barrel strength bourbon in the Jim Beam Family. The master distiller focuses on the sweet spots of the racks and comes out with a couple releases every year. I am just getting back into the smaller batch bourbons but i believe they have all been up in the 120+ proof. They also have Little book which i believe is just released once a year.

When in KY a couple weeks ago we did a tour at Jim Beam. There i was able to try some and with an ice cube really enjoyed it. I have to add that i have a soft spot for jim beam as it is the bourbon that really got me into bourbon. It will probably sit on the shelf until i work my way back up to the higher stuff and/or find another bottle of it.

Any thoughts on this one? I went to a liquor store grand opening a couple weeks ago and everybody bum rushed the whiskey section when the doors opened for the first time looking for anything rare, this was the only bottle that got gobbled up. I could have grabbed the last one but while I was looking at the label somebody reached over me and took it. I think the price was $95, I didn't want to drop that much on something I hadn't heard of before and didn't have time to look it up, so I went with a handle of eagle rare instead for half the price (after some discounts)

Ben, I've had it twice from two different batches, and loved it like crazy both times. I haven't really liked any other "finished" ryes, but this one is different to me. I'll update it when I crack this one. I had a discount to use, so got the bottle for a little over $70.

Found a bottle of 107 at the grocery store by Klugs' house at Shack this year. Only bottle there, nd the guy said he put it on the shelf 5 minutes earlier. Same kinda luck for me with the first Blanton's. Now, if only I could stumble into some Weller FP or some George Stagg. :r

One of the local big stores had a single barrel release yesterday afternoon, people got there when they opened at 8 and waited 8 hours, I got there at 3:15 and waited 45 minutes, we both ended up with the same bottle of Weller Antique 107 (although the people a few behind us did not). I don't know if the "Single Barrel Select" is any different than the normal bottles - I think not and they probably just bought a barrel worth of the regular 107 - but I had a few glasses of it when I got home and it is delicious :al

They also had bottles of 1792 full proof and tomorrow will be selling off their barrel of Blanton's, but I don't think I'll be able to make it to that one :lv

Finally was able to check off two bucket list bourbons off the list this week to see if they were worth the hype, Weller 12 and Pappy 10 year. I haven’t been able to locate a bottle of either but happened to be lucky in two different places in two different states that had them at the bar. The Pappy was good but I really can’t see it being worth the secondary prices. The Weller 12 on the other hand, I’m in love with. Been trying for the last two years even without trying it to score a bottle and have looked high and low. Does anyone have a source of where I can score a bottle?

They show up on shelves from time to time, I've heard they're actually attainable locally on a regular basis if you're willing to pay $100+, I'm not interested in spending that much but if I see any more around closer to retail I'll let you know

Same, somewhere in the $70-75 range. I'll keep that in mind, I'm mainly sticking with bourbon for now other than a few cheaper rye pickups. Whiskey has been my go to liquor for years but only recently did I start actually paying attention to what I drank, so I'm trying to build my knowledge base up and pay closer attention to mash bills and ages and other stuff to really dial in on what I prefer, or at least have a better idea of what to pour when I'm in the mood for a certain profile

Also started my infinity bottle last night, Sarah got me a really nice decanter for Christmas and I finally decided what I wanted to start with. Poured in 8oz each of BT store picks from my two favorite liquor stores, one definitely tasted sweeter than the other so I think that blend should give a good base until I figure out what I want to put in next. My rule is as soon as it gets down to 25% full I add more or whatever seems like it would help the blend, the goal is for it to never run out and remain a mix of everything that was put it in it before, should be fun :D

Really like the New Riff Bib bourbon, Ben. While I like the SiB Rye, it's not as spicy as I had hoped. I'm inclined to try the regular rye next. But all in all, great bourbons for the price.

This will be the year I start finally utilizing my virginia family for some ABC lotteries, starting this week :tu

I'll be rooting for you, and rooting that you get doubles of one and wanna sell it to be for Valentine's Day. :D

Hmmm....I'm not very good at describing and picking out notes yet. Initial aroma is brown sugar/maple syrup with an undertone I can't quite make out. This is going to sound really strange, but it reminds me of the way my Great Aunt's house used to smell.
It's only 93 proof but packs a little more heat than the other bourbons I've had so far. Flavors......I don't know.....it just tastes like whiskey lol, but I like it. Told you I'm not good at this haha.

Sounds like a review I would write... tastes like whiskey but good whiskey

I'm weak and stopped by my shop on the way home yesterday to get their bottle of RC6, haven't cracked it yet but I'm sure I will soon. They did have a bottle of Old Forester 1910 that I was very tempted on, but managed to say no.

Got home and had a pour of 1792 Full Proof, opened that one the other night. When I tried it the first time I thought it was too hot and ethanoly to be able to drink neat (125 proof), yesterday it seemed to be a bit more mellow. Still on the hot side but the aroma seemed improved and small sips didn't ruin the pallet. Towards the end I did put a few drops of water in which helped take away the numb tongue feeling but didn't do too much for the flavor. Not my favorite, I don't know if it's because I usually drink lower proof stuff (around 100 seems to be my sweet spot currently) but it struck me as just alright. Maybe I'll have another pour tonight over an ice cube or two to see if that helps bring anything out

Grabbed a Larceny store pick on Saturday, cracked it last night and it tasted like straight up pistachios and peanuts. I've heard about nutty profiles but not often from Heaven Hill, unique to say the least. It wasn't my favorite, but it wasn't to the level of being off putting. I'll give it another shot tonight or tomorrow to make sure nothing else was influencing what I was getting, after that it may take a seat on the shelf to break out as a change of pace pour

I'm still gonna give Larceny's regular release a try, heard good things about it, maybe this pick was done specifically because of the unique profile. To some I'm sure the profile is sought after, to me it's just interesting

I have been sampling a whole lot of different bourbons since my move to Texas in Oct. I and 3 other fellas knocked off a bottle of Balviens Doublewood...excellent! We are currently working on a bottle of four roses which is really nice. Sweet aroma, not too much of an alcohol burn, real pleasant.
I was introduced to Wellers (not the 12 year) it's a good inexpensive drink. Like it a lot. :tu

I just picked up a bottle of Rowan's Creek today. I've seen very mixed reviews and looks to be a sourced whiskey, but I like to sample and $40 doesn't break the bank. We used to live on a Rowan Road, so the name pulled me in some too. 100.1 proof, so it's the strongest bottle I've got so far. I'll be breaking this open tonight with a stogie and some Game of Thrones.

I really enjoyed the 1920. Next time I'll try the Bottled in Bond 1897 I think. Its 80 proof compared to the Prohibition 111. Even for a 111 proof,, it was really pretty smooth with a nice nose and finish.

BiB is...interesting. Not something I would drink a lot of or often even, but I've had worse. Started with Knob Creek 100 proof, so it has that going for it ;)

Lu took a bit to her school for an administrator's lunch. I hear it went over well :D

Well, first impressions aren't that great. Too oaky and smokey for my liking. A drop of water calmed the alcohol bloom down and let the flavors come out more. I'm mixed on it though. On one hand, I didn't like it as much as the other bourbons I've tried, but on the other it did compliment my cigar rather well. May try this one in a cocktail or two. The heavy smoke and oak might make a stellar cocktail.....and the 100.1 proof might be nice too.
