They're all good, just finished a B519 last night. So far A120 has been my favorite of the ones I've tried, but I'm hoping I can get a couple of the store picks when they start dropping, seems like most decent sized shops in CO got samples and made picks a couple weeks ago but who knows how that roll out will go

I must have seen at least 6 stores post about them getting samples and picking a barrel last month, some are also going to KY next month to pick a second in person. I'm really hoping that the quantity around will make them somewhat accessible, stores in other states have started dropping them to a wide range of ages, proofs and prices (I've seen as high as $130, and as high as 141 proof, up to 10 years)

Hmmm, wonder what secondary would be for something like that?

First one will probably be 200+, then people will see that a lot of stores are getting them and it will drop down

That being said, I heard an unconfirmed story that HH will be letting certain groups (likely associated with charitable donations) pick 12 year barrels, those will be all sorts of secondary expensive if true, but I think in general the 12 year barrels will go to regular ECBP releases for as long as they're still age stated

While they last! Four Roses has already started doing away with them, one of my groups did a pick recently and got a "non-mutilation agreement" after that we had to sign agreeing to not alter the bottle in any way (including adding any stickers). Seems like that could be a trend going forward, at least from the big guys

Easy work-around, give the buyer their own "novelty sticker" to do as they please with when they get home. Some of the guys on FB bourbon groups are even paranoid about that.

That was my thought too, similar to the OF BS stuff that has came out lately. I'm not the biggest ECBP fan, but a group I'm in picked a 10 yr- 141.3 that I'm excited to try it.

I have mixed feelings on this, guess I don't understand the reasoning behind it. However, There are always those that push the limits with some of the designs and i would guess that brand gets lumped into them because its their product its on. I just had good times for the first time last weekend. I think it was the blackberry finish. It wasn't too bad, the finished part wasn't overpowering like I half expected. I feel that good times is definitely one of those brands benefiting from the tater secondary market

I finally busted open the GD15. I'm really enjoying it. The nose has baking spices, fresh bread, and plum. On the taste I get cinnamon, vanilla, orange, and caramel apple. The finish fairly coats the tongue, but dissipates rather quickly, with more orange and some clove.

I think I grabbed this for $63, and would grab another bottle without hesitation.

Just saw this at my local yesterday, right around $65 as well. For my previous Dickel experience, I'd try and find a pour before committing to a bottle.

Last night I had single barrel picks of 9 year KC and 5 year KC rye.

A week of vacation with my brother-in-law, we were able to put down a little over 3 bottles of bourbon total - opened 4.

Best bottle of the week was the Wilderness Trail barrel strength store pick - good solid bourbon - caramel, oak, slight sweetness, did not drink like 116? proof. I have another one of these thankfully in the basement.

Other bottle killed - Barrel - David's Dram edition - a Kentucky Whiskey finished in German Ice Wine barrels. - Very light in color and mellow in flavor. It was good but not a go find another bottle good. Also did not drink like it was 115 proof.

The other two we tried, Chattanooga Whiskey - very good bourbon but very light after the other two bottles. Made for a good afternoon sipper on the beach. Lastly, Woodenville - most unique of they four. It had a strong oak and balsa wood flavor to it. Not bad and not harsh just very different from the other 3. Ended up with 1/2 a bottle of each of these two so I will revisit them again without the barrel strengths to compare them to.

There's a whole lotta brains behind that Wilderness Trail (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSLWEnz-1mc), Dr. Pat Heist is a yeast genius (has a separate company as a consultant to provide yeast to distilleries and production facilities around the world, he has thousands of live samples to pick from for himself and anybody else that wants to pay him). Their barrel strength rye is killer, their bourbon is gonna be hard to beat when it starts getting a few more years on it :tu

I had decided not to buy more 9 year Knob Creek picks and concentrating on the 14-15 years picks as they're going the way of the dinosaur. But after drinking the Sal's 9 year pick with friends on Saturday, went and grabbed 2 more. Best 9 year pick I've had, and better than some of the 15 year picks. No brainer at $49, I may grab a couple more to stockpile before they sell out.

Sounds delicious! I've enjoyed every 9 year pick I've tried (it's my go-to pour if I don't want to spend real money when I'm out, I was at a place in Vegas where cocktails were $20-25 but a 2oz pour of their KC pick was $12). The only reason I'm not buying them is I have too many Knob Creek bottles as-is and don't need the constant temptation of buying more, there's too much temptation out there. Plus I've been spending way too much on high-proof high-age ex-bourbon barrel rums, but that's a conversation for another thread :al

High proof:

KNOB CREEK SINGLE BARREL – 12

Low Proof:
FOUR ROSES SINGLE BARREL - 10

Rye:
OLD FORESTER RYE 100 - 10

Maybe keep it to the under $10 options. I've had some good Old Fashioneds with nicer booze, and they do sometimes elevate the drink, but you're not gonna get a good feel for the underlying whiskey. Also always a good option to ask the bartender what they prefer for their Old Fashioneds, I've had a few where they give me some surprising answers so I usually just let them run with it. My favorite is going to a nice cocktail bar and saying "I want something like an Old Fashioned, but not an Old Fashioned, and maybe some some X (honey, orange, whatever you're in the mood for) in it." Gotta trust the bartender but if they know what they're doing you'll usually end up with something delicious

It's a good list but I would pick a different "cheap" bourbon

Best Cheap Bourbon: Evan Williams Black Label

I would prefer Old Forester's Bottled in Bond or Wild Turkey 101. Both can be found around $20 a bottle typically.

The regular Four Roses often gets the best mixer but it is also an inexpensive one with a different profile from the two listed above.

A lot depends on your preference here but you can often find a lot of good bourbons from the larger distillers in the lower priced range that are better than the latest small batch boutique label that sources a young bourbon and slaps a label on it.

A few thoughts- I'm not a believer in these types of lists generally but this one at least hits a couple places. Best overall as Knob Creek is fair and I'm a fan, Evan Williams white (bottled in bond) is a world better than black, the ones in the "affordable" category are all good pours, the "high-end" section is all over the place but mostly on track. In general there's really nothing on the list that will disappoint. And if you find the "Grail Bourbon" at the bottom William Larue Weller please give me a call :)

Any "Bourbon" will be at least 51% corn, actual wheat whiskeys are another hole to go down but that hole isn't as deep. I like wheated bourbons a lot, there aren't a ton of them out there, mostly Weller and Makers Mark. I'm a big fan of Makers, especially 46 Cask Strength (the 101 is pretty good too). Weller is... Weller, if you can get it get whatever you can but don't overspend, I personally am a huge fan of Old Weller Antique 107 but have a couple nice Weller Full Proofs, those ones took a lot of patience (and in one case a sizable charitable donation) but they can be really good, or really average depending on the barrel

So Knob Creek, Four Roses, & Most Of Your Other Suggested Bourbons Are The Higher Corn Variety???

stearns
07-30-2021, 07:55 AM
They are all primarily corn, that being said there's a lot of room for playing around with that remaining 49%. Four Roses has two different mashbills, one 20% rye and one 35% rye (blends will usually have both), MGP is similar with 21% rye and 36% rye, Knob Creek is higher corn with only 13% rye. This list isn't exhaustive (https://modernthirst.com/home/bourbon-whiskey-mash-bills/)but can give you a general idea of what a lot of the bigger ones are doing for their mash. Also keep in mind that the time in the barrel likely has more impact on the final product than the mash, but everything plays together to get you to what you taste when you pour it in a glass

Nice bottles all around! Never tried Longbranch myself but heard it's a solid choice, especially if you can get it for a couple bucks off retail (hopefully Costco helped you there). I've heard it described as "like Wild Turkey's Gentleman's Jack"

Good kills Tom, I haven't been drinking much new recently because I'm trying to work on population control as well, getting close to the point where all bottles under half full are the ones I don't want to kill off, got through about 5 but in that time I acquired more like 10, there's no winning :sl

I did get a fun new set of tasting glasses, washed em but haven't broken them in yet, hopefully I can work some magic tonight

Exactly What The Costco Salesman Said, Ben!:D. Admiral: It's Best Neat; I Could Really Taste A Little Mesquite (Love This!), Vanilla, & Caramel. When Mixed With Ice, It Definitely Diluted The Flavors. I Think The Price Was Around $40 With Tax. Less Than 100 Proof, So Probably Not You Two Inmates Favorite, But Definitely A Good Sipper! You Should Try It!:tu

Longbranch to me was a bourbon's attempt to get to a Scotch-like peat like taste. For me it didn't overpower and was a unique and interesting bourbon. Not a large mover around here so we can often find it for under $40.

I was the same way, ice and let it melt down. Then slowly it was put the ice in and let it cool, drink it before the ice really melted. Then it moved to less ice, maybe a cube and slowly it became neat. The thing that also helped me transition was smaller and smaller sips. The flavor is still there but the breath taking burn was not.

2019 was a good year for Booker's, and I dig the Biscuits. I would definitely put a few drops of water in, it really brings out the flavors in Booker's batches. But if you can get it close to MSRP, I definitely would (and have).

I have that problem around here, not some much mark ups but just getting some rarer stuff is the problem. I haven’t found Eagle Rare since Christmas. The guy at the liquor store by work says he normally gets some in once a month in his Tuesday shipment and it’s gone that day. Normally I find some stuff like 4 roses small batch ($32.99) and single barrel, basil, wild turkey, I did find some rare bread barrel proof ( $47.19)and a long branch this past week (I regret not pulling the trigger one of them) knob creek, bulleit, high west rye, wild turkey, woodford reserve.

I think my next bourbon purchase is gonna be bardstown fusion ($51.99) I’ve also been thinking about old elk ($55.99)

What do you guys think of these prices? What’s the best site you guys use to find MSRP?

I've got one shop near me that carriers Penelope, and they only are stocking two facings at a time. I've been told the local distributors have access, but stores worry carry it, it boggles my mind. Good luck on finding any of the toasted series.

The other major issue locally is finding near MSRP on anything that is allocated. Hell I saw Blantons the other day for $145, damn highway robbery prices!

I had a guy at a local grocery who would set one aside for me about twice a year, $54. He is retired now, so the only Blanton's I've seen this year is at secondary prices. I would certainly buy if I saw it near MSRP, but probably just to use as trade bait.

Drinking it blind I wouldn't even be able to tell you what spirit it was, wish I had grabbed a bottle for myself when they were available, it's not often you get something that unique

I picked up a B521 not too long ago, but I've heard not-so-stellar reviews on it (compared to other batches) so I'll probably just sit on it for a while and be glad I have it when they eventually ditch the 12 year statement. They get their stuff from Heaven Hill (currently), so what you got is basically a slightly younger Elijah Craig Barrel Proof(ish). I haven't had them myself but hear they are quite good, nice pickup!

Nice pickup! Everything I've heard is it's actually 15 year Beam (same with all the other mystery "15 Year Kentucky Bourbon" that came out in the last couple years), I love that Prideful Goat actually charges a reasonable price. There are going to be some flavor difference as with anything but these guys all paid the same for these totes, but some charge $100 and some charge $400+ for a bottle of it, I've had a few and one put out by my local group is a favorite so far but all of these (Prideful Goat, Doc Swinson, Hunt & Gather, Three Chords, anybody else who is not 15 years old mysteriously putting out 15 year bourbon last year) came from the same broker with has all sorts of NDA's. I've heard enough from people in the industry to believe they came from Beam

Interesting tid bit - in an old interview with Jim Rutledge when he was at Four Roses he mentioned that they taste test and formulate that year's LE blend 6+ months before bottling then keep everything in their barrels and sort of hope they turn out just as good when they go to bottle. I asked Brent Elliot last night if that's still the case or if they vat the liquid as soon as they're happy with the blend, he said yup they still keep everything in the barrels and try to plan for what it might taste like in 6 months but they aren't 100% sure what the final product will be like until they go to bottle. I'm sure the fact that they're going to sell out regardless gives them some comfort but you'd think with such a high profile release they'd want to be more sure of the final product before putting it out

I've read similar accounts that, yeah, there's a certain amount of hoping and educated guessing in play. But I reckon you're also correct that unless it tasted like porta-john water, people would buy it because of name alone.

Jay, I've liked all the high proof stuff from Pinhook. I did like he 2018 better than the 2021, but the new one is still very tasty.

Cracked the 6 Year War last night. Good flavors but a bit light for my palate. I'll continue to try these every year, but I think the high proof is definitely more my jam. Going to be on the hunt for some high proof store picks next.

Just picked up a Blue Note barrel pick from the rick house collapse, initial couple of sips where the largest baking spice/ apple pie / caramel hit I have had from a bourbon. I will be grabbing a few more bottles at ~$40 a piece.

Finally killed off my first "real" bottle of bourbon last night, got it when somebody here told me to enter a pappy lottery 5 years ago, brought it home and cracked it as I was walking through the door, my old roommate and I poured some over ice and had a great time. I would have a pour every now and again over the years, then stopped drinking it and put it in the back of the cabinet. That's no way to live, and I'm tired of seeing an almost-empty bottle on the shelf. Peter and I killed it off, he poured a little Weller 12 to drink next to it, it's crazy to think that those are in any way related

Walked into a local smaller store I've been in before but didn't see anything interesting (at a reasonable price, anyway). I was opening the door to leave and he asked what I was looking for. Gave him my standard answer, "Booker's".

He produced a 2018 bottle from behind the counter. Imagine how surprised I was when I asked how much and he quoted me retail. Score! Based on what he had Blanton's, Weller 107 and some others priced at, I was shocked to say the least.

Gary, while I love Beam, I'm not much for Basil Hayden. The regular bourbon is meh for my palate, and the Dark Rye is the worst bottle of whiskey I've ever purchased. Literally poured 90% down the drain.

Smooth entry level? First thought would be Elijah Craig. If available, EH Taylor BiB is another smooth solid choice. Neither as sweet as Angel's Envy or Eagle Rare, but those are both too syrupy sweet for my taste, try Elijah Craig and see if you like smooth with a bit less sweet.

You might also want to try some wheated bourbons, they can be sweet and smooth. Maker's 46, Welller Special Reserve, etc....

Discovering your jam is half the fun! -(P

Once again I agree with Tom, haven't tried the toast but I probably won't, the regular was a very brief intro bourbon for me until I learned more about proof and more flavorful bourbons. I got the dark rye as a gift from the wife a couple years ago, I'm not sure what to do with it since I can't drain pour it, I've been thinking about making a cocktail that uses a splash of it but it would take a lot of cocktails to get through it.

If you want to stay on the Beam train, I can't recommend Knob Creek loud enough. The regular shelf bottle (should be $30ish), the 12 year (a little harder to find but it's around, probably $50) and store picks ($50-60, usually 9-10 years, higher proof at 120 vs 100 for the others) are all going to treat you really well. I love wheaters myself, if you can't find Weller Special Reserve give the Maker's a shot, 46 is really solid. Also regular Buffalo Trace, store picks can be really great but shelf bottles will get the job done too. It's an exciting time, take brief notes on likes and dislikes as you go and enjoy yourself!

I'm going to add Evan Williams, Black Label or Bottled in Bond (I prefer Bottled in Bond but it is a little higher proof at 100). This is going to be in the same realm as Elijah Craig, same distillery (Heaven Hill). Old Forester is a good one, they have a few different distinct offerings. I love Wild Turkey 101, it's an interesting one because it's a cheap standard "get you drunk mixer" but also generally considered the best affordable bourbon by experts. There's so much to explore, 50mls are great for trying the stuff that comes in that size, bars help with the rest but also just buying a sh!t load of bottles will get the job done :al

Picked up a fun one over the weekend, Copper Sky's first edition of an annual release "Copper Accord." This release was part lower aged MGP bourbon finished in apple brandy casks, part 13 year double oaked bourbon and part 16.5 year light whiskey. It lands just under 125 proof and drinks like caramel apple. I'm a big fan, cracked it open on Sunday with a friend and a couple other bottles :dr

Opened bottles only become an issue when they are less than half full. Too much empty space in the bottle starts to affect the juice.

Have you thought about decanters?

What does that solve, still opening the bottle?

Please school me, I know nothing about decanters.

Bourbon decanters have a stopper so nothing evaporates plus they look cool. Unlike wine you don't have to worry about oxidation. Like others have said light and heat are the enemies. Hence a liquor cabinet is great for the decanters. Don't use lead crystal though. Not sure if that answered your question lol.

It does. I keep them out of light already and I'm not a heat fan. I was more concerned about opening multiple bottles when it's takes me a bit to finish them.

I can jump in a little on the storage topic, I'm no expert but I've asked around a little. The general advice is no, you won't have any issues having a bunch of bottles open if you store them upright and out of direct sunlight. There is the possibility of oxidation, although that will likely take a few years and is based on the amount of air space in the bottle, so a bottle that is opened with one drink out of it will take a significantly longer time to notice the effects than one with only a splash left in it. Some people do "wet the corks" by tipping the bottle over although once a month is far too often, unlike with wine the high alcohol content in spirits will eat away at the cork and cause it to not seal well over time. Something like once every 6 months or year is fine if you're worried about long term storage. The "Move to decanter" trick is more about moving to smaller bottles, so if you have an expensive bottle of whiskey and you drink half but plan on saving the other half for long term you can move it to a 375ml bottle and fill it to the brim so there's less oxygen physically in the bottle interacting with the liquid. I have a friend who did something similar with his Michters 20, which is worth something like $5-6k these days. Once he got 1/3 through the bottle he just moved it all to 2oz jars so there would be no effect of oxygen on what is left. I went over his house and he handed me a 2oz jar to drink and an empty bottle to look at :r

The practical advice is don't worry about how long something has been open, but once you start getting below the halfway mark or lower maybe plan to finish that bottle off soon. I'm working through a significant purge right now trying to kill off most of my less than half full bottles before opening too many others. I have a friend who only keeps 30 bottles open at a time, I aspire to be as disciplined as that but I'm probably triple that right now, but working in the right direction!

He's an animal! I try to keep it under 10 open at a time ... but sometimes it creeps up to 15 ... great excuse to put in some extra work to get it back down to 10 :noon

That's alright, that's okay
You can think that you're in love
When you're really just engaged
Some mistakes get made
That's alright, that's okay
In the end it's better for me
That's the moral of this story

Just picked up another bottle of ECBP from a local shop that dropped their allocated bourbons this morning. Doors opened at 10 am, but some guys started to line up at 2:30am. I was towards the back of the line, but they had listed 59 bottles and only half were gone by the time I got to the counter. One bottle per person per day.

I've heard less-than-great things about pretty much all of the 2021 ECBP batches, I haven't tried any myself but I'm curious, still one of the best deals out there for 12 year age stated barrel proof bourbon

One of the few allocated bottles I can usually find when it first drops.

After such great batches in 2020, I have been disappointed in the first 2 2021 batches I tried, A & B. When I saw C921 was around the same proof as B521, I passed at the B was too light for my palate.

So, the regional Spec's store in Dallas had a drop today, as did the main store in Houston and another regional in San Antonio. To say it was massive was an understatement. Spec's sent out an email of the event with a list of bourbons on it, but I wasn't aware of the true size. People started lining up yesterday at 7am. By 6am today, there was 350 people in line. I decided sleep was a better option, now I am not sure. The initial list included, Blanton's, Sazerac Rye, Well 107, WFP, W12, Four Roses, Old Forester Barrel Strength, Whislepig 18, Bakers Single Barrel and several others. Turns out is was an atomic bomb of a drop. They had 500 bottles of Weller FP, W12, Blanton's (both the 750ML and 325ML bottles), Stagg Jr. The other bottles were in the 100s for each. You were limited to one bottle from each line. The firs ten people in line got ORVW or a BTAC bottle. I aam kicking myself for not going, but I knew the line was going to be crazy. Here are some photos from social media on the tables at opening.
