Nice! I have a bottle of 1920 that's still sealed somewhere in the back of the cabinet...

...but I also drank about a full bottle of it camping one weekend a few months back so I have a very good idea of how good it tastes :dr

Nice find! I can barely find any on the shelves recently, let alone some that have a little dust on the top

I did find a bottle of Hibiki Harmony over the weekend, cool looking bottle and the stuff inside is supposed to be pretty stellar, I was gonna crack it last night but being National Bourbon Day I thought it wouldn't make sense to drink Japanese.

I had a very full weekend of drinking Bourbon, which included:

Blantons SFTB
Hancock Reserve
BT Store Pick (2x stores)
Jefferson Reserve Ocean Voyage 19
Larceny Store Pick
Henry McKenna 10

And probably some other stuff :al

Does it seem that the store pick makes a big difference for the Buffalo Trace, Ben?

I think so, but also I'm not sure the last time I had a non-store pick. I definitely notice a difference between bottles, I actually have three different ones open now (but one only has a couple pours left, it won't make it to the end of the week), I wouldn't say they are different enough that I would grab one over another because I was looking for a particular profile but some I get more maraschino cherries than others, which I like. I had a pour from the almost empty bottle that tasted like a cherry vanilla ice cream I had when I was a kid. BT is my go to for a warm up pour, most nights that I'm trying a few it starts with that. But I'm also very lucky that it seems a different store around here gets a BT barrel each week, so I never have to pay more than $26 or have to look too hard. I just grab one pretty much any time I see them and throw it in the back of the cabinet :tu

Nice Tom! I did some research before buying the 1920 and glad it also gets the Icehog seal of approval! Question for everyone, I’m fairly new to High end Bourbon and enjoying my journey, the 1920 will be my first whiskey that high in proof, do you add a few drops of water to it and barrel proof bourbons? I normally drink my bourbons neat. Will it be an all out burn fest? I’m currently enjoying the last of my Elijah Craig small batch 94 proof and love it but there is a decent burn to it? Am I being a puss lol? Going to crack open the 1920 on Fatjers Day to enjoy with Dad and watch golf.

stearns
06-16-2020, 07:31 AM
You're not being a puss! Give it a try neat, if it's too much throw a couple splashes of water or an ice cube, try again. I think you'll get up there quickly, I never used to be able to drink scotch without an ice cube but when I started switching to bourbon I tried skipping the cube and for the most part only drink neat now, but sometimes certain pours need a little water to open them up.

I've heard barrel proof bourbon described as being able to enjoy three ways: neat, splash of water, over a little ice. All three will give you a little different experience, try them out and see what you like best.

I also once had a guy at a liquor store tell me I should buy a bottle of Barrell Bourbon because I could add enough water to basically get two bottles of 80 proof for the price of one so it was a good deal. I didn't buy it... or anything there...

icehog3
06-16-2020, 08:50 AM
I agree with Ben, Gabe, try it neat first, then with a few drops of water. I find that sometimes the water really opens up different, richer flavors, so I do it sometimes even though I love the heat.

I disagree with Ben about you being a puss though, no way that EC 94 proof should be too hot. ;) ;s :r

I still see lots of Four Roses Small Batch everywhere around here, Scott. Plus the Single Barrel, Small Batch Select and others.

Friends sent me my Dickel BiB from Dallas-Fort Worth, have not seem that in the wild in Chicago.

Around here, anything that gets a good review seems to disappear overnight. Wierd.

I went ahead and tried Total, nation wide, but the only store that has it (and in store pickup only) was Miami. I need to get my hands on 6 bottles, for medicinal purposes only, of course. Now, if someone were to find several bottles of the Dickel BiB they don't want (yeah right), I would be interested. Just sayin.

Today I did find Four Roses Small Batch and the SB Select in Shrewsbury Mass. Put a couple of bottles of each on hold. It's 28 miles to the store, but I am thirsty :dr and will be headed there tomorrow to pick up a few bottle of each.

Thanks!

I would suggest the Four Roses Single Barrel over the Small Batch and Small Batch Select, Scott. So much better than the SB, and just as good as the Select and $15-20 cheaper most places. Thank me later. :D

Only place I have seen the Dickel BiB around here is at the United Center is a whiskey bar before a Blackhawks game, and there obviously only available for a pour.

OK, no joy on the Four Roses Single Barrel. I called last night and they said they would hold two bottles for me. I drove almost 30 miles and when I got there they said they were out of stock. I was slightly perturbed, but the manager said he would give me a 10% discount on two bottles, but they won't be in stock until July 2. I'm good with that. Picked up some Four Roses Small Batch and a bottle of Balcones Texas Single Malt to try. I am not an expert/experienced taste tester per se, but I do like to "taste" different whiskeys and bourbons and enjoy them immensely.

Let us know your thoughts on the ones you picked up after you've cracked them.

SSDVC

Well, since it was 5 o'clock somewhere, I cracked open the Balcones for a taste. This is my first review, of anything, so forgive me if it sounds off.

After letting it sit neat for a few minutes, I had a sip or two. This Whisky has a very rich body/aroma, almost caramel like. At 53% by volume, it's a strong drink neat. I then splashed a little water in the glass and that brought the temp down a bit, but it still smelled great. I gave that a minute and then put an ice cube in the glass and waited another minute. The cube seemed to bring out a lot more flavor and made this a more enjoyable drink.

Truth be told, it will take me a while to get through the bottle, but the Four Roses Small Batch will be forth coming.

Went for a hike yesterday, stopped by a liquor store before heading back to Denver. Got excited when I saw the handles of Weller SR and Eagle Rare, but quickly realized the situation when I saw the bottles of Blantons, Taylor Small Batch and Rye, Weller 12 and OWA and... Bookers 30th, all with no price tag. I had already had a regular bottle of ER in my hand when I asked about the price of the Wellers. She laughed and said OWA $199 and 12 was $299 because "they are allocated." I put the ER down and walked out, no need to ask about other prices

Doesn't it just break your heart sometimes? Seeing a semi-unicorn and then finding out it's 5 times MSRP?

I still would have had to ask about the Booker 30th though. If nothing else, because I'm a bourbon masochist. :r

Honestly I don't see it too often, most of the "pricier" places I shop add $10-$20 for hard to get bottles but they're small shops and I'll usually pay it to help them out if I want that. Otherwise I just go to bigger stores that only charge MSRP. Of course none of these places regularly have allocated stuff on the shelves, but it's nice when they do

I also wouldn't mind paying a few dollars to a mom and pop store for a highly rated bottle I would like to try. it's keeps them afloat and I get to try something new or on the rarer side. But like Icehog says, jacking the price up 3 or more times retail is just crazy. Around here that seems to be the case, especially in the bigger stores and chains. And, if it rates in the mid 90's r higher, good luck in finding some to try.

But I guess supply and demand drives what we see at the stores. Maybe I'll just be drinking JW Black the majority of the time:D

So last night I had a pour of Elmer T Lee. I was thinking about the Hancock Reserve I bought a couple weeks ago, and how it was one of only three BT products to be made with Mashbill #2, along with ETL and Blanton's SiB. So I decided to have a pour of all 3 back to back.

https://i.imgur.com/Jsj41ov.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/CIxbfHT.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/rf8QSC1.jpg

The similarities between the flavor profiles is obvious, but there are also significant differences. The big question, how would I rank them without considering cost. I understand that different things can affect the palate and I might rate them differently on a different day, but I'm pretty confident with the result.

1) Blanton's
2) Hancock's
3) ETL

Crazy because ETL is by far the more expensive on the secondary market. So good for my wallet going. Frankly, I'm unlikely to buy the ETL or Hancock's again as my palate definitely prefers the higher proof and heat now. Blanton's, I'd buy that under $60 or so.

Found a new honey hole...well. sorta, prices are high, just appreciated seeing stuff I haven't seen in the wild around here. Larceny Barrel Proof, McKenna 10 Year, Barrel store picks, Old Fitz, Heaven Hill, older Booker's (but nothing new to me), bunch of other things I forgot. Most of it was within $10-15 of MSRP (McKenna's an exception at $69, hard pass), so I will definitely drop in once a month or so and see what's new. Only thing I bought was the newest ECBP batch, first time seeing it in the wild.

Picked up a bottle of 1792 Bottled in Bond last week, they had it hidden behind the counter but it wasn't marked up like a lot of things in the store. First pour last week thought it was just ok, but a second pour last night was really tasty, more flavorful and "juicy" than the other 1792's I've had. Juicy isn't the right word, but it had an attribute that reminded me of the 1920, almost like as you are taking a sip the air from your glass hits your tongue in a nice way. My favorite 1792 so far (other than maybe the sweet wheat, but I've only had one pour of that amidst many stronger things)

Did manage to grab the last bottle of OWA from one store, which was really the one thing that I wanted, and got an ECBP B520, Old Tub and an old bottle of Wild Turkey KS. I was up there first thing in the morning, when I eventually got back I checked FB and somebody from CO was up there after me literally taking pictures of the shelf at every store in the town. No wonder the store owners hate CO shoppers. I did get a chuckle out of see the empty OWA slot at the shop I got mine

Did you go with Peter, Ben, I know he gets up there for bourbon occasionally?

At the gathering for our friend on Friday, I had a few pours including Old Ezra & (yum) and Heaven's Door (meh).

Got the hankering for OE7 at home again last night.

No but I got his list of spots. The only one from his list that's really a secret since it's off the highway on the way up I struck out on, the rest are just the biggest shops in Cheyenne. Funny enough the place that had $700 Lot B and $900 WLW also had the cheapest ECBP ($63) and loads of other decent stuff cheap ($33 ER but I've already bought too many MSRP bottles of that recently). It's clear that all the shops talk about the CO guys, everybody had WSR on the shelves for $40-50 but most other things were MSRP

Very nice, Ben, sounds like a fun trip although it's too bad the secret spot was short...

Yeah, I came across a bottle of ECBP B520 for $49 a few days ago. I already have a bottle missing only one pour, but c'mon! It's 49 bucks. :lr

Ok, I’m not a bourbon connoisseur, aficionado, professional, etc. like some of you. I’ve enjoyed some and have a couple favorites, but I’m a neophyte for sure. Was gifted this bottle today from my coworkers as a going away gift. Just cracked it open and poured a little taste. Damn this is smooth. Definitely doesn’t drink like a 101 proof. Anyone else have experience with this brand?

It's sourced from MGP, then aged and blended at Green Brier. Not usually a fan of this type of bourbon, but this one was given to me by a friend that knew I liked "hotter" (this one is 113 proof) bourbons and it's actually pretty good.

If it is the regular EHT Small Batch MSRP is around $35, I've paid between $35-$45. If you're talking Straight Rye or Single Barrel $90 is a little over but probably worth it, if it's the small batch I'd find something else. I love the small batch but no way I'd pay 2-3x MSRP for it

Went with this purchase. Maybe next week I’ll snag the EHT Single Barrel. Recently had WT 101 for first time since I was 19 and now with a developing taste for bourbon it definitely fell into the under the radar for being labeled red neck whiskey. Looking forward to this- All right All right All right!!

I'm having a similar turkey revelation recently, after hearing so many people talk about how WT 101 is the most underrated affordable whiskey around I had a pour of it neat and really enjoyed it. I bought a bottle each of Rare Breed and Rare Breed Rye, I think I'm gonna give them a try this weekend. TW here has Rare Breed for $38, couldn't say no

I've also been enjoying my through a bottle of Kentucky Spirit, like a single barrel WT101. About $10-15 more than Rare Breed but I really like it

Crazy. A stranger who saw me looking FB messages me and says he saw a pair in a liquor store in April and if I call and they are still there, he would grab them for me. I call the store in the 'burbs of Boston, and sure enough, they're still there. I message the guy but I don't hear back for hours and I start getting nervous.

So I reach out to our own 8lug (Mark) and ask if he's close. He picks 'em up for me, ships 'em the next morning, and Bluegrass was in my grasp.

The guy who reached out was legit. I send him a real nice 3 pack of Coobans even though he didn't have to go or ship, just for reaching out and letting me know.

Just picked one in KC here 2 weeks ago and tried it (1st time). I had a "couple" Oktoberfest beers before I tried it and I it was the most mint I had tasted out of a bourbon. Tried it again the next night and it was there but fainter but still there so maybe it was just me.

A couple weeks removed I will give it a go here again this week.

I know I am no help whatsoever.

I was wrong, the Binny's ones were only 9 years. Had a gift card so grabbed one for free to give it a whirl. Picked the one with the fewest bottles left. Also grabbed the OFSBBS store pick for trade bait.

Nice snag on the OF. Local store got the first barrel in CO a few weeks back, I was watching the announcement and figured "that's a little pricey for a young bottle, I'll let everybody else have their fun" then immediately saw how much other people cared about it and wished I had grabbed one or two to pass along. FWIW I did have a pour from that bottle last weekend and it was pretty good, very easy to drink for a high proof, but it still seems expensive

The OFs are going for more than double what I paid on FB secondary groups, so I figured maybe I can get one of the '15 Booker's I need out of it. If not, I'll drink it. Had a pour last night and was pretty happy, that Beam peanut funk was front and center.

I snagged a 15+ year old store pick for what I thought was a very reasonable price on a FB secondary group yesterday Andrew, so at least I'll get one before they go the way of the dinosaur.

Got a purty little trifecta of samples from Mr. Stearns today as well, a very nice surprise indeed. :D

Two winners for sure. I don't know how available picks are in PA, but a good EC store pick is as good as it gets for that price range, I usually keep a couple around

I haven't tried any of the variations (30th, 25th, Rye, Noe Select), Dave, and at the current prices, probably won't unless it's a pour at a bar or a friend's place. One friend promised me a sample of the Rye when he opens it. I told him the way the price is skyrocketing, keep it sealed and we can sell it and have a Maker's Mark in Maui on his dime. ;) :D

I just got a bottle of EHT Single Barrel in, I tried a sample of one blind and thought it was solid but wasn't wowed, I still have a sample of that one I'm going to side-by-side with this bottle when I crack it. Hung out with a local guy and had my first taste of EHT Barrel Proof. Yeah, I'd pay over retail there. :D

Had a few other cool pours. Old Forester Birthday, and a couple different Kavalan expressions. One was aged in Sherry casks, the other was their barrel proof "base". Not much of a finished whiskey guy, but these were really freakin' good.

Did a 3-bottle comparison of EHT Single Barrel on Saturday (third was a sample from a friend). I think the general consensus was that they are all a little different but still pretty similar, the main takeaway was that even though it's the same proof as the small batch these were all noticeably better, probably should have thrown a pour of that in but it's something I've had a bunch of and am familiar with

I'm biased, but I liked my bottle the best, I thought it had a thicker sugar note

Shelfer would probably be better for casual drinking in large amounts (so smooth and sweet) but the pick was more interesting, made me think a little. The pick takes the overall win but I've been trying to slow down on drinking that one, so the shelfer is what I'm usually grabbing for a Weller fix

Saw this in one of my B&Ms and thought I'd give it a try, mainly because it's bottled here in MS and some of the whiskies used in the blend are distilled here, too. It's got a good amount of rye in the mash bill, which is right up my alley.

ok took a small pour (is that right ? ) last night and added a drop of water.

On the first sip I immediately wanted a cigar but alas I didn't have the time to sit and enjoy one (the nut house was in full swing )

One of the big differences in rum ( my usual) and Bourbon for me to get used to is the warm feeling ( kinda like when I land at O'hare for a big weekend) :tu

I kinda thought the taste made me think of smoked meats. As I sipped it smoothed out for me and I enjoyed it more and more.

I do want to have some with a stogie and then really enjoy it. Not bad I think I liked the Elijah Craig better but I did have a cigar with that one.

I don't do pictures, but I was at my local military base and stopped in the PX to see if they had restocked their liquor isle. I came across a bottle of Blanton's I hadn't see before. There was only one bottle on the shelf, so I said what the heck, and I picked it up t start the holiday season off right. The stock person was hanging around and I asked if there were any more and she said there was only one per customer, per day.

The bottle looks like cut crystal, the a horse and rider on the cap, with the bottle individually numbered, dated and cataloged with Barrel No, Warehouse No and Rick No. It is 93 proof.

Haven't opened it yet, but should I go back and get more? Seemed to be rationing it pretty tightly and at $43, it wasn't an expensive bottle.

$43??? It Goes For Over $100 In Most Places. Go Back & Buy More! Excellent Bourbon, IMO.:D:tu

I'll be doing just that. At the register, it lets them know if you purchased more than one per day (ID is required and scanned). It's an hour away, but it looks I'll be putting some miles on the car this ENTIRE week!! Thanks for the info !

Definitely Scott, it can be tough to come by in some areas. Even when I can find it at retail in Chicago (maybe once or twice a year), that's $59-65. And like Greg said, secondary market can be $80-120 easy.

What is the drop date on your bottle? I am looking for one 8/18/20 - 8/20/20 for a friend.

Great price at $43, while it's not my favorite bourbon (although it is delicious) I'd buy it on the spot if I saw it for less than $60

Date on the bottle is hand written and is 10-7-20. I will be trying to score another bottle on Thursday, maybe two if I can get a way with it !!

If I can score two more, I'll one I have for some sippin over the holidays !

A couple of single bottle group picks at 114 proof last night. Both really tasty, but the Old Haymarket (Heaven Hill 7 year) is just outstanding.

Thinking about picking up a bottle of angels envy cask strength
So I enjoy BT and eagle rare along with four roses yellow and lightly peated scotches. I swung by a liquor store on the other side of town that I don’t get over to very often and found a angels envy cask strength. Never having a finished bourbon along with cask strength think highest proof I’ve had before is 94.Wanted to get some thoughts on it. Seemed like a pretty good price $58 from what other angels I’ve seen in the past.

Angels Envy Cask Strength? Looks like this?

https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/angels-envy-releases-limited-edition-2020-cask-strength-kentucky-straight-bourbon-whiskey-finished-in-port-barrels-in-all-50-states-301154146.html

If so yes buy all you can at $58 since it has an SRP of $200 and usually sells for more than that

Yup, price is mismarked or the bottle isn't the Cask Strength.

I don't like finished whiskey but if it were actually the CS, I'd buy it for trading.

Looks like that, when I walked in I asked what they had limited and rare and guy was like not much they changed our trucks to late Monday so Tuesday morning is prime time, since covid we haven’t gotten much but there’s a few things in the back I think so he went back and bought out a bottle of the cask and a bottle 4 roses single barrel and I said do you have a price on those and went up and got a price and that’s what came back on the cask and the sine barrel was $44 he said maybe he missed a 1 on the cask because generally bourbon prices are on the higher side here

Thats a steal at 43. I just paid 85 out the door because I have only seen it in a store one other time since moving to SE Michigan.
