Picked up my first ever bottle of BT for $22 while grocery shopping. It is smooth and easy to drink, but it felt a little "lite" last night. Have a ruined myself with all the 120+ proof bottles? :lr

I will say it is a good bourbon oh, it is a unique bottle, and has a great name. That is all fine a d good, but if it tastes like crap, it is just a sow with lipstick.

Thankfully, (I ha to buy a bottle because of professional interest) it is a nice bourbon, is decently smooth with hints of caramel. It would be a bottle I'd buy again.

Peace of the Lord be with you.

I haven't bought the Angels' Envy because I haven't liked many of the finished bourbons I have tried. Only one that sticks out in my mind as having enjoyed is A Midwinter Night's Dram by High West Distillery. That being said, if someone has it where I go, I'd try it with an open mind (and palate).

That's kind of where I'm at Tom. I like bourbon that has been distilled and bottled at the same "still". I guess it's a purist holdover from my family cooking stuff up in the hills back in the day.

But I do wonder...:al

Stopped by 3 stores that were along my route today just to see what new stuff they had gotten in, which wasn't anything that interested me. Two of them got in some Weller SR and one some EHT Small Batch, but I am flush of both of those. One got in the Weller 12 Year 1.75 at $400 Neither who had the Stagg at $550+ had sold them...shocking.

Never seen the Weller 12 handle before, if they could cut their price in 1/3 it would be a cool buy

I went to a couple stores yesterday as well killing time in a new part of town, saw a 1.75 of Woodford for $71 and a few bottles of Knob Creek 25th anni at $130. Not bad prices but passed on both, was hoping to find something a little more enticing

Just picked up another store/barrel pick of EC Small Batch. This one is called "The 9 minute late 9 year old" as opposed to the 10 yr store pick I got before. They let me sample them side by side in the store and the difference was crazy. I had to pick one up. The manager also let me know that they picked out a few more barrels for the store. Weller Full Proof, Buffalo Trace, and 1792 Reserve. I'll probably need all the above lol.

I have the B but I may go back and pick up a bottle of the C, still holding out hope for a bottle of Larceny BP but they seem pretty nonexistent around here, apparently the biggest shipment to any store in CO was 6 bottles and most places only got one

I like the Eagle Rare too, but gravitate towards higher proof bourbons mostly these days. Think I've got 1-2 pours left, might have to restock when I see it under $35.

Today's arrival... I know it won't come close to what Ben is opening tonight, but I'm pretty pleased. I've had good luck with the other 2019 releases, and this is the highest proof one of them all.

Went out to a nice dinner Saturday night, looked behind the bar and they had some very interesting looking bottles so I asked for the whiskey menu. I was surprised how "reasonable" most of the prices were, especially for being a semi fancy spot downtown (other than the $100/oz for pappy 20) so I ended up buying an ounce of William Larue Weller after the meal. It wasn't as life changing as I was hoping, and Tom's going to kill me but I thought it was slightly too hot (I believe 128 proof). I added a splash of water to it which improved it, but based on everything I've heard I thought it was going to be more of an eye opener. They also had GTS for the same price and if I was hanging out longer that would have been my next pour, but the food was fantastic so I bet I could convince Sarah to go again and this time I'll skip the cocktail (old fashioned with ER barrel pick) and go for the straight stuff

icehog3
02-24-2020, 08:23 AM
Never had the WLW, Ben, but not surprised that you think it may be a little overrated. But I'd still give it a try if I was at a place that served it at a reasonable price. I'll be interested in hearing how the Stagg is when you return.

So did you crack the celebration bottle for the Shrine, or did that get pushed back by the outing?

I've also been leaning towards the higher proofs these days, but the Eagle Rare was kind of a nice change this weekend, although I was hitting a couple of Bottled in Bond 100 proofers along the way.

stearns
02-24-2020, 08:48 AM
Since Sarah bought me the WLW I let her try a taste, she could barely get it to her lips before the ethanol got to her. The only whiskey she's ever really loved was Macallan Rare Cask we got for free at an event a year or two ago, I looked up the ABV and it's 86 proof, no wonder 128 was a bit hot :r

stearns
02-26-2020, 08:56 AM
Went out to another place downtown for dinner last night (restaurant week) and they had a similar whiskey menu as the place over the weekend... but about $10 more per ounce of the good stuff. I got a beer instead and when I got home decided to open up my bottle of Bookers Country Ham. Finally a high proof (124.7) bourbon that I really enjoyed neat, only had a small pour of it but I think I'll be having another after work today :al

Opened up a bottle of Early Times BiB yesterday, it was recommended to me to buy if I could find it, finally tracked a few down a couple weeks ago. Very smooth for a 100 proof $22 bottle, able to drink neat with no issues, but nothing too exciting in the flavor department. This will probably be used in cocktails in the future

Stuff that's easy to get elsewhere is HTF in Colorado. I couldn't believe it when I went to MA and saw baby saz just on the shelf, here they post online that they have it with a one bottle limit and it sells out within an hour

The people who did the booze for our wedding are opening a B&M on Friday, sent us a 15% off anything coupon to use, think I'll go right when they open the first day and see if they have anything interesting. Last time I went blind to a liquor store opening there were a ton of whiskey fiends waiting as well and they didn't have anything too cool (other than the handles of ER), but this company does a ton of events and probably moves the volume to get allocate bottles so I'm hoping I can luck out

I've got a bottle of the C919 but have yet to crack it, I hear it's the best of 2019. I'm still working on an open A119.

Opened up my bottle of ECBP B519 last night, I think this is one of the best pours I've had in recent memory. Sweet charred oak from nose to finish, reminded me of freshly cut used barrel staves. Cracked the Booker's 2019-01 last night. My friend from another board said it was pure "funk". True, but in a delicious way. The finish is amazing, cayenne and spice. Right in my wheelhouse. It's one that I'll want to share with friends, but will have a hard time keeping my mitts off of. Yup, if I ever see another bottle near MSRP, I'm snaggin' it.

If that is the 13 Year Old BiB, that is quite the score. I can't find it anywhere here in the east, same for the Four Roses Small Batch SELECT (just finished the bottle). I would love to be able to find a few bottles of either, but I also heard the original retail price of $36 for the Dickel is a long gone dream.

I haven't had the Early Times. OGD 114 was pretty tasty I thought. It may not have some of the complex flavors of some other mid-top shelf bourbons, but it certainly wasn't a push over. Thanks Steve.....I gotta quit buying bourbon. :r

Ben, I know it's not even a mid-level entry, but for the cost ($26 for 1L), it's around the same proice point as Buffalo Trace, and may be just a bit tastier.

Cracked the newest Booker's (Granny's Batch). Better with a couple drops of water, and I'll reserve final judgement until after a couple more (non-neck) pours. Definitely like the 2019 releases I've had better....that being said, this one is still better than the majority of stuff out there for my palate.

Yeah, I see A120 in some parts of the country (and for a while now), yet nary a sniff at any place near me. In a normal year the 2nd batch would be getting bottled in the next couple weeks. Wonder if that's still the case?

I absolutely agree wit you, Andrew, and at 117 proof it's right in my wheelhouse.

Opened "Beaten Biscuits" batch last night. Started neat, then a couple drops of water to open it up. It's definitely my least favorite of the 2019 batches. That being said, it's still better than 80% of the other bourbons on my bar. ;)

So many good options, other than the ones that Tom said I'd look into Evan Williams Bottled in Bond (<$20 and delicious), Makers 46, Buffalo Trace, or if you can find it any Weller expressions (the green label, "Special Reserve" or "SR" is fantastic and $20 for a 750 msrp). You're already onto Elijah Craig, if you like that try to find a bottle of their barrel proof releases, they come out 3 times a year but are all great, although that may get you up closer to the $60 range (and may be higher ABV than you're looking for). If you're feeling rye, give Old Forester Rye or Rittenhouse a try, they're both great and under $30.

Good suggestions, Ben, though where one lives will play heavily on the price of the Weller SR. Especially love the Elijah Craig Barrel Proof if you're willing to spend up, the last two releases I have are amazing (C919 & A120). I saw the C520 has started popping up, it's about 4.5% lower on the ABV.
