There was some Widow Jane 10-year at my B&M, which I've never tried. I've read a lot of good things about it, but I just have a hard time laying out $85 for a 91 proof bourbon. There are a helluva lot of damned good cask strength bourbons out there for a lot less.
Anyone had any Widow Jane? Is it worth it?
at $85 I find it hard, at Costco prices it is better but yeah a lot of others out there for that price that I would look for first.

I'm not nearly enough of a bourbon drinker to offer up an opinion on your question. But I think the bottle is cool. When it's empty you can put it with your trophy collection.

I've never been a fan, but it's been a long time since I've had some. My tastes may have changed since then. But I'm not paying what a lot of places are asking for just to try it again.

Nice grab! I picked one up for my brother for his wedding, he poured it for like 15 of us and most people were amazed they got to have Blanton's. I tried explaining that it's a gold and the differences but nobody gave a f*ck, at least my brother knew and appreciated it :r

I've only had a few drams of various Blanton's over the years, I've like the Black a lot that I had at SoCal last year. The regular version is okay, but not always to my palate. I do have a number of bottle of regular Blanton's in my collection (trying to get all of the letters). This was a call from Spec's that I wasn't expecting and wasn't going to pass up on either.

Called the store I found Blantons at a few weeks back. They mentioned having Bookers. They still do. Question is do I pay secondary prices? $180 for the 23-01, $190 for the 22-03. No deal on buying both.

Prices on Bookers has gone up in the last year. I was used to paying $80-$90, now they are $115 at TW and Spec's. Those are definitely secondary prices. I wouldn't pay that unless I really, really liked the batch.

Msrp is $100 here in Mich. Those aren’t crazy secondary prices (one place was selling Blantons for $200), but not having tried either of these, I can’t justify dropping the cash. So it’s a no go.

While Booker's 22-03 and 23-01 are the best batches in years, those prices are crazy. It's become a bit harder to find, but when I do it's at $89 and tax. Even FB secondary groups are only at $115-130, those prices are nits Bob.

I did not use much restraint with my first one either, Ben. I lucked into one at retail, not sure how I can get lucky again. Skipped going to Binny's yesterday and missed out of Jack Daniel's 10 and 12 Years, as well as lots of trade bait (EHT, ER, Buffalo Trace sps).

I don't think so. They want around $50 for their regular offering which is 80 proof. I can get an owner's pick Rebel Cask Strength for the same price that is much tastier. Hell, I can get 3 liters of WT101 for that and I enjoy it more.

I agree 100%.
I've heard reviewers call Basil Hayden's a beginner's "quality" bourbon, where folks feel they're getting a good bourbon because of the price, and the proof won't scare them off. One YT channel mentioned how BH fans are always remarking about how smooth it is. Their response was along the lines of "Yeah, it's smooth because they water it down to 80 Proof, taking away all the complexity and leaving an inoffensive yet mildly tasty pour. Bottle it at 90 or 100 Proof and see how it does."

Cracked open the WT last night for a taste. Very good, and should get better hopefully. First sip was kinda hot, but it was my first taste of the day. Gave it a few minutes to open up and my palette adjust. Vanilla, oak, spice. Long finish. The heat in my chest gradually built after a few more sips.

Question for the hive mind. Do you think bourbon is going to experience an implosion like the cigar boom of the early 2000’s? As I watch more videos and see all of the new brands coming out, there has to be a point where it reaches over saturation. And the prices. Hard to pay what some of these newcomers are asking when you can find the established brands cheaper.
icehog3
06-06-2023, 07:51 AM
I think it's possible that the market gets wildly oversaturated with all the craft distilleries, and all the variants/finishes/etc that keep hitting the market. I see stuff now that sits on the shelf forever around here. My favorite was Digits, the Scottie Pippin bourbon. One of the stores here dropped it by over 50% and it still sits untouched.

I think it's going to stop increasing at the rate it recently has, but I don't see an implosion on the horizon. Small brands will die off, big brands will keep putting out stupid amount of whiskey because they make their money on $20 Evan Williams not $300 Old Fitz decanters, and experimentation will always be around but will slow down. I bet there will always be a class of super premium extra high end to appeal to the scotch collectors but I think the $90-$150 range brands who don't have a core offering under $60 will have a hard time keeping people's attention

I am starting to see some slowing down in some areas of the market, and some speeding up in other areas. Example, Smoke Wagon was previously considered allocated by Spec's, so it was in the glass case, one-per person per day rule. A few weeks ago, i saw cases of all expressions on the end cap, no limit. Same with Heaven Hill 7 Year. Not sure why those (and a few others) suddenly became widely available. As for the speeding up, I see some newer brands get snapped up and placed on secondary markets at lighting speeds. Case in point: Penelope Rio. It is gone two minutes after the doors open at the stores.
Overall, I agree with Sterns; the boom is going to slow down, but it isn't going to implode.

Eventually I think we will see the "investors" coming into the market - people that are buying sourced bourbon, putting a label on it and selling it for $80-$90 a bottle, slow down or go away when the margins dry up. In the meantime, there is still a lot out there that is good and reasonably priced that people have moved on from that will end up being there after others go away.

What luck of a find Tom! Did you (or anyone else here) try either of last years Hardin's Creek initial releases? I saw the first one (15 year) around $150 and hesitated to pick it up because I grabbed a store pick instead, went back the next day and they were all gone! Then I was shocked when I saw the second release was such a low age statement at 2 years. I'm hoping to find at least one of the 2023 releases to try.

I have a bottle (sealed) of the Jacob's Well, and I was able to try it from a friend's open bottle. It's a really great pour, think a 15 year Booker's mixed with a 16 year Knob Creek.
The 2 year old Colonel, I can't justify $79 for a 2 year old bourbon. One local store has it down to $59, I told the manager if it hits $49 I'll try it. :r

$80 for a practically fresh bourbon is a hard hit, but it seems lately, $80 is the new $40 for anything that isn't available in a plastic bottle. Hell, Barrell 34 is up to $90 MSRP, and I remember when that was "high priced" at $60 for batch 25 a few years ago!
Nice offer though of you cracking Jacobs Well with me, I may be out around Chi-town this fall, and I couldn't pass you by!
Clay that KC SBR is really nice this year, and finally for a year, I haven't yet found a 9 year store pick yet that has sucked!
James that Larceny BP is hit and miss still. It's definitely improved from years past, and high above their small batch that's nearly undrinkable! Glad you found a good one!

I don't think we'll see prices go down on any new releases, but I do foresee a point where stores and bars will get "punished" (restricted from allocations and such) for charging secondary pricing when they are using a national wholesaler/distributor.
The bigger point I think though is that there are so many established brands and only so much shelf space, so I do think some of these smaller sized niche brands that only source their spirits, and aren't a distiller themselves, will either get priced out of the market, or get squashed by national chains that don't want to allocate two feet of shelf space to more MGP sourced re-labeled six year Dickle with a no-name brand on the bottle for $65+!

My local just got Larceny BP (A123). It's either $10 over MSRP or MSRP has gone up $10. Either way, I'm tempted as I've heard good things about the last couple batches.
Bob, if they ever get a Jack Daniels Barrel Strength sib pick, grab it. The ones I have had have ranged from excellent to unreal.

What’s anyone’s thoughts on the JD 12 year? Found a bottle locally, at $90. Didn’t buy, but could go back if it’s worth that price. I’m enjoying my SB barrel strength store pick from another store.

I don't know if anyone else watches the SLB Drinks folks on YT, but they've got their thoughts on the new Booker's (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sC2DZO0Rn0) up. They don't recommend it. Their one positive: good mouthfeel.

MSRP I think is around $80 and in the capital region of NY, I've only seen it for $200 and above! For $90 I'd give it a shot, worst case, share it with some friends!
For comparison for $90 I can get two HH BIB, or, a bottle of 9yr KC store pick and a bottle of OGD 114, or, WT Rare Breed and OGD 114 and a few bucks left over, or, a bottle of Barrell 34 and a cheap lunch!

That was one of the review vids I watched. The other was The Mash and Drum. His video wasn’t even 6 minutes long, he hated it that much.

Thanks Mike. Unfortunately my friends are more the mixer crowd. Not worth buying it to mix with Coke. As for the HH, I have such a hard time paying the price they want for it now that it’s widely distributed. When I would travel to Kentucky for work I’d pick it up for $15.

JD12 is going for $275-300 on secondary Bob. I have a bottle and it's tasty but I much prefer the JD Barrel Strength picks. For $90, I'd at least buy it for trade bait.
I'll probably try the new Booker's before watching any reviews so I can go into it without preconceived notions.

Someone help me stop! Lol. Went hunting upper east side of metro Detroit. Heard from a few owners near me that the upper east side gets more allocated stuff. Figured what the heck. Total Wine was a bust. Store worker tried to push their cheap juice off onto me. No thanks. Next store I went to had good selection, with some really nice store picks. Talked to the owner for a bit. They work off a point loyalty system for their allocated stuff. Because he was the first one with a KC barrel pick, I grabbed one of those. Then went with his recommendation on the MM stave finished bottle (they had two different selections). Because I was grabbing those, he let me get the Eagle Rare at msrp. The Saz is from yesterday.

Nice pick up! A number of stores around me are carrying EC SiB Store Picks, mostly 8 year bottles, one store had 8, 9 , and 11 year picks recently, but all are 94 proof. Sadly no EC SiB picks around me in NY that are the barrel proof, going to have to check around in Florida when I'm back down there next week.

Cracked it open just now. Wow, shows promise. Red fruit, buttery, maple syrup on the nose. Doesn’t drink like 110 proof, until you get a few sips in, then the burn starts to build in the back of the throat. Sweet, spicy, oakey. Not a bad neck pour. I’d give it a :tu
Did some hunting today. Hit up a few stores in Ann Arbor. Snagged a bottle of Old Grand Dad 114 at total wine, otherwise it was a bust. The few other stores I stopped at weren’t much better. If the had anything decent, it was overpriced. EC store pick for $90, the small Eagle Rare for $50. I’ll pass.

I'm a big fan, I didn't like the rye as much but rare breed bourbon has been great for a higher proof blend with some nice aged components. Ok, this Penelope is really good. The nose makes you think it’s going to be sweet; caramel, maple syrup. You get those flavors initially on the palate, but then it turns spicy. Very much cinnamon, the barrel char. Settles with a nice warmth in the back of the throat.

Ok, what do you all do if you get a bottle you end up not liking? Trying the MM store pick, the one with the different stave finishes. It’s not my cup of tea. I think they used too many of the French Meridiant (5 of the ten). The nose is really good, like maple syrup. But it doesn’t carry over to the taste.

I think they used too many of the French Meridiant (5 of the ten). The nose is really good, like maple syrup. But it doesn’t carry over to the taste.
Cup of tea? I thought this was The Bourbon Thread? :r
Reckon you could pour this bottle down the sink. Or, save it for serving to guests you're not overly crazy about. Or, use it for experimenting with cocktail recipes? You aren't one of those folks who think that mixed drinks are beneath consuming, right?

Very cool, they must have expanded production. I have friend near the distillery in WA so I usually get stuff from him when the distillery has special releases, he did one last week where you could fill bottles from a special barrel and buy to take home which he said was awesome but I'm drastically cutting down on buying so I had to pass

Was out running errands so I stopped by a few stores to see if there’s anything new worth picking up. Was also looking for RD One Amburana finished bourbon. Saw a review about it that looks like it’d be up my alley. Seems other people saw the same video, as the shelves were empty.
The one bigger store by me had a few of the Orphan Barrel bottles. $300. Umm, yea, no.

Steph and I are planning a trip to Mammoth Cave for next spring. We figured while in that area we'd hit some distilleries. The town of Bardstown seems promising as a location as it's not too far out of our way and there are 11 or so distilleries within 16 miles of it.
So, has anyone toured some of the distilleries around Bardstown? Are there any that are must-sees and others that are not worth the time?

Bob, one of those bottles I sampled was bottle finished with an Amburana stave. I liked it a lot, but others I know don't care for anything Amburana.

Decided to hit up a few stores after my doc appt. The one store I slightly overpaid for Blantons and Weller, has Weller SR ($99), 107 ($149), 12yr ($449) on the shelf, as well as 10yr Old Rip ($1299) and Pappy ($1799). They had other overpriced stuff (ER, EHT SB, Bookers, Willet Pot Still). There are new owners that decided to flex their other stores overpriced stuff around here. Good luck with that.
Another store had Russell 13 for $300. Apparently it’s selling as they were down to 3 bottles.
One store had a Russell’s Single Barrel that looked interesting. $65-70 iirc.

It was a good day at Binny's, they released Stagg 22B and 23A, Blanton's Straight From the Barrel and Blanton's Gold. Catch was you could only take one of the four. I grabbed the SFTB and floored i to the next nearest Binny's, where I grabbed Stagg 22B. It was $60 and the secondary market for it around here is $250, so I saved a pretty penny.

Tom any plans to open the Blantons SFTB any time soon? They show up in Florida from time to time but I want to know if it’s really worth it or not before buying. Also by chance what was Binnys price on it?
As for Old Elk store picks, I really haven’t had a bad one of their bourbons. I’m not a big fan typically of finished bourbons, but even their stuff is pretty good. Recently I had the chance to participate in a barrel pick of a sour mash from Old Elk and it was hard to narrow down the choices, as there really wasn’t a bad one, but our group ended up with a unanimous favorite and it turned out to be a high proof barrel too!

Tom I hope that SFTB is tasty!
Before Greg Metze left as the master distiller at MGP he blended between 50,000 - 100,000 barrels that were all designated for Old Elk as propriatary mash bills and Old Elk purchased all of those barrels for their current distillate. Metze is the distiller for OE and while they expect to be using the sourced barrels for quite a while, they are also working on their own distillates and experimental barrels. They currently have 18 different selections (iirc) and their store picks encompass many of those options, blends, and finishes. As for a bottle I think you'd enjoy, their 8 wheated bourbon is pretty killer!

Ok, I spent way too much money I don’t really have this afternoon. This might be a long one.
Hanging with my best friend Dave last night. He likes bourbon, but not an aficionado. He’d rather drink it mixed than neat. Not judging, to each his own. Last night we went for tacos. After, I suggested we hit up a local bar that was supposed to have a bourbon I wanted to try (RD One Amburana finished). Nope, but the had almost all the BT line, plus Bookers. Had a pour of Bookers 22-02. It was ok, but there was something on the mid palate that I wasn’t a fan of. Then followed up with the Stagg Jr (delicious). Back at his house I tried a distillers select from a local distillery that was surprisingly good. I think it’s MGP they finish.
Fast forward to this morning. He’s got the day off and we go grab breakfast. I had gotten a text from another friend that a store in Ann Arbor has Bookers 22-01 and 23-01. Call them, they’re gone. Damn. Well, we had to go that way since we’re headed to his cottage to pick up his boat cover to take in for repair. But first we stop by another local store to see if they have Blantons. He’s been looking for one. Sure enough they do. Nice! Then we head towards his cottage but first we stop at Total Wine to see what they have. Heard the truck with BT stuff is there, but still needs to be unloaded. Another hour or so. We head to his cottage, grab the cover and drop it off. We’ll hit up TW on the way back and if we get lucky then cool.
We get to the store and cases of BT is set out, but nothing else. Ask a worker if that’s all they got. He’s like, “yea, that’s it”. Well shite. Buddy goes to look at the cigars while I go use the pisser. I come out to to see him looking around. We both had the same idea to find the guy we talked to a couple hours earlier. We see him pushing a cart towards the checkout, followed by a few people. On the cart I see more BT, plus ER, a few EHT SB, Saz Rye and Old Fitz Bib and Weller. Hot damn!
We’re 5/6 in line. Missed out on the Weller, but I scored the OF, EHT, ER and a baby Blantons. He got the last OF, ER and baby Blantons. The guy behind us really wanted the OF. Even gave me his phone number as he heard me say I might buy to trade. As we’re talking to him about trades, mention I’m looking for RD One Amburana finished. He texts another store a few miles away that has it in stock. Off to that store we go.
Cracked open the RD One. Wow! It is like Cinnamon Toast Crunch in liquid form.

Secondary pricing only really got crazy for the higher aged ones, I think they need the extra oak influence otherwise they can be too soft and sweet like a fruity bubble gum. From experience, TW employees tend to be liars. There is an hate/hate relationship with many of them in DFW and several of the bourbon groups I am in. They will say "that all of it", then sit on the good stuff in the back, either to put out later or save for their buddies. I don't mind if they put it out later, that at least gives people a fair chance at allocated stuff. Sometimes they would sneer at the people that line up at opening to be the first to get allocated bourbons. Once before, John and i saw it first hand when the manager tried to hide the ER at 8pm on a Saturday night. I suspected he was wanting to buy it for himself (why else wait so late to put it out?), but we grabbed three and told the other behind us how good ER was and they grabbed the rest. -(P

I could go on and on about TW, I stopped shopping there almost entirely. There was a law in CO saying a store can't hold lotteries for their first three years in business or something like that so we never had an allocated lottery for GR members, supposedly all the good bottles were stacking up in a warehouse somewhere for a big event whenever they hit the three year mark but that was many years ago and still no allocated bottles going out in any sort of public way.
Then there was the time I went there to grab a certain bottle, it was sold out, I ended up paying $50 more a couple days later to a local guy who told me his roommate was a TW manager and would get in trouble if he was caught selling them so the guy sells stuff in his behalf. That was the end of my relationship with TW, naturally a year later I find myself on a barrel pick with the top spirits manager for all CO TW locations and tried my hardest to bite my tongue but I think a few comments still made their way out :r

And who took home the rest of the fitz and maryland rye hmm?
I think Joey may have got that Stitzel-Weller juice. But the Hazmat was a LOT fuller. ;) :r

I opened an NBC single barrel last night, “Return of Jed”.
It’s the sister barrel to “Tennessee Jed”, which was crazy sweet and complex, totally and wonderfully different than what I think of MGP. “Return” is more classic MGP. Not as interesting as the former, but good in its own right.

Love me some Tennessee Jed, I'm about half way through the bottle :dr
I typically buy two of every ECBP batch, in an attempt to cut down on bottles I got a sample of B523 and did it blind against the three prior releases. B522 was the standout, fruity caramel and sweet deliciousness. B523 and C922 were pretty similar and well balanced but 922 was slightly better and A123 didn't fare too well, similar but wasn't feeling the finish. I'll pass on B523 and work on drinking through some opens while waiting for C923 - a 13yr7mo 133pf beast that's supposed to be pretty tasty

Glad you're digging the Jed, Ben! :tu
I heard about the C923, has it been released anywhere yet? I saw one offered on FB for $200 and thought "WTF"? Sounds like a must have.
I appreciate the blind results you posted as I haven't bought a batch since I believe A121. I'm definitely going to look for a B522 now. Dr

The 2021's weren't very great, 2022 seems to be a better year for them, we'll see about 23
C923 has been released in a state or two, I'm expecting to be able to get them as relatively easy as the other batches, certainly won't be paying the $200+ people are asking now, I can be patient :)

Yeah, for about $140 in savings I will be patient too. It's not Booker's after all. ;) :r

I’ll keep my eye out for it in Michigan, but we’re always behind on releases. Have to wait on the state to approve, yada, yada, yada. Still waiting on MM BEP.

We're usually a couple releases behind as well, distribution stuff, some states just get things sooner than others

I am a fan f many of the Barrell batches as well, I've bought multiples of my favorite (28). I've heard good things about 34.
Cracked the 2020 MM Private Selection last night. It's even better than the '21, and I hear that the 2019 I have yet to try is the cream of that crop.

Stopped by a local B&M, only to find out they had an ER SP last week. Went in two days. Did grab their Filibuster SP. it’s young, 3yr 8mos, but the sample was good. 114 proof. Very much berry forward.

Peter (physiognomy) surprised me with an awesome bottle today, a 8 Year Pinhook single barrel pick, "Blucifer". 114 proof with a cool Halloween themed label. I've loved the Pinhook high proof picks I've had, can't wait to crack this one. Thank you Peter!

Hope you enjoy, my friend! Hard to go wrong with 8yr 21% rye MGP at barrel proof. I noticed a good bit more wood on this vs the 7yr. My bottle seemed to open up after a bit of air.

I am sure I will, right up my alley Peter! Every bit of it sounds good. I'll make sure to give it a couple weeks before I do a second pour as well.

Love the label on it, almost bought the bottle just for that. It's a reference to the cursed horse statue out by the airport where it fell over and killed the artist as he was putting it up (or something like that)

Any secondary or trade value for Kentucky Owl? Found a place with four different bottles (multiple of each) that ain’t going anywhere anytime soon. 10yr Rye, St Pats, Confiscated, and I think Batch 11.

Outside of Rye Batch 1 and 2, easy pass. Even those don't have a crazy secondary value (SRP $200, secondary $300) but they are damn delicious. I think those were 11yr's and are mostly long gone from stores. I have never tried batch 2 but it's from the same stocks as 1 which I've had a few times :al

A friends wife bought him the "confiscated" bourbon, I think it was around $150. He would send it out blind to people to prove how meh they are, he did it to me one time and I thought it tasted like a buffalo trace single barrel pick, I wouldn't pay more than $30 :r

Cracked a couple new bottles this weekend, the 2019 Maker's Mark Private Selection and Stagg batch 22A.
The Maker's is definitely the best on the 3 Private Selections ('19, '20 & '21), and I'll drink this bottle a little more judiciously.

The Stagg 22A is super hot, and I'm big on high proof bourbons. I'm hoping a little time opern will tame this just a tad.

Did manage to find a 375ml of High West American Prairie. Not cask strength. Still delicious. I think, and that’s a hard thing to remember, this was the pour my chef friend (RIP Jason) bought me a number of years back. He was running the kitchen at a very popular spot in Detroit that I stopped at before a concert. The whole evening was fantastic.

High West is an interesting one, their blends used to include a heavy portion of teenage MGP rye (I think up to 17 year old components) but slowly started incorporating more of their own distillate as it came of age, and I think now most of what they're putting out is distilled by them. I have a couple older bottles that are fun but not my favorite style of rye. I have tried their BouRye releases but don't think I've had their bourbon, did a quick search and American Prairie looks like it's 2+ years old, that could include some older stuff but I'd guess it's still a pretty young average age

Nice grabs! People have been asking for it feverously around here, the store owners are telling them to buy more B523 so the distributor will give up the C's. I'd rather overpay and have one shipped in

Ben, it definitely tasted young, but not overly so. Had a nice sweetness to it. At $22 for the smaller size, it was worth it to try.
