Finally finished off the bottle of Troy & Sons Heirloom Moonshine this past weekend. Opened my bottle of Larceny at last night's poker game.
WOW!!!
Great flavor, and a very long finish. Worth finding and buying a bottle!!

Got introduced to Eagle Rare last night. Some good stuff.
One of my favorites, though it's the only BT bourbon I've ever tried.
I just gave the last couple glasses-worth away to a good friend who hasn't tried Eagle Rare yet. Wasn't able to make the Super Bowl party he was throwing, so sent it with someone else to give to him as a surprise. hopefully it didn't get drank in transit. :)

Yes. I like JB Black Label and Larceny better. Very worth the price here. About $22 if I recall correctly..

It comes highly recommended by Peter (pnoon) as a good bourbon at a very reasonable price. Not available in Bama that I've found.

Kind've new to the Bourbon game. Drank good beer after work to wind down for years, now trying Bourbon. One or two drinks instead of countless beers...
Just finished my first bottles of Woodford Reserve and Larceny over the past month...Now on to a Henry McKenna Single Barrel. Really smooth as far as I know it. Almost as good as The Four Roses SB I've had on occasion.
Any more suggestions for a rookie?

Glad I saw this thread. Been reading through it all. I am not much of a drinker but I do enjoy a nice drink with a good cigar. Usually I only drink when at my local B&M event. Is there a general consensus on what a good bourbon would be to start off with? I want to buy a bottle or two to have on hand for the house. Also trying to get into Rum but I know I like both. Just don't know the difference between them all. Need a starting point and want to avoid anything nasty out there. Thanks!

Woodford is always a good starting point. Great bang for the buck and a good starter bourbon. Maker's is also handy to have around, especially since its so versatile and can be used in a number of mixed drinks.

I picked these up last week traveling thru Knoxville. Got to do a taste test on each beforehand, and decided they both required purchase! The 9 year old is exceptionally smooth, but not as flavorful as the 11 year old one. The older one was not as smooth, but was bursting with flavor!

And the nice thing about McScrooge's: Once done there, I can jump on the side road, and 3-5 minutes later, i can be at the Smoky Mtn Brewery in Turkey Creek! And when my wife is with me (as she was this trip), I can have the full beer sampler with my meal, and she can drive us back to Bama! Good booze and good beer, both in close proximity!

Been getting back into the bourbons lately, picked up a bottle of Four Roses yellow label and a bottle of Larceny. I really like the Four Roses but wow, the Larceny is just awesome. Yeah I have heard that the Stagg is really good, If I could get it here (they just don't ever make it to the shelfs in Canada) I would have tried it long ago but the fact that everyone of these took quite a bit of hunting and hassle to get, especially the Pappy's I'm kinda hoping it is sub hype or it will be difficult for me to track them down in the future. That being said I am on the look out for more Pappy's and Stagg should anyone feel the need to help a guy out by point him in the right direction these coming months.

I've turned a few Jack drinkers on to Evan Williams. I did a blind taste test with a friend about seven years ago. He'd been a Jack drinker for 25 years and was stunned when he picked the EW. I said "half the price and just as nice".

Well guys, I must apologize. The Pappy has all vanish, and today, I found out why.
I went to the three biggest liquor stores in the Las Vegas/Henderson Area. A Total Wine was one of them and that is where I got the info about Pappy's availability.
When I saw a bunch of Pappy on the shelves, it was either the first week or second week of January. It was explained to me today that Pappy is a very limited production and even more limited with distribution. The killer is that it is only distributed in the month of December, each year. Once a year!
The "Total Wine" I was at said that they only received less than half of what they had ordered and that it came in a couple of days after Christmas. What they did receive, was all sold out by the end of January. They won't get any more until December.
Had I known when I saw it in early January, I would have picked up a few bottles. I have a nearly full bottle of 15yo old left and that's it!

pnooner still speaking softly carrying the big stick. I promise to disappear into obscurity again but doing a drive by.
Here's another of my long winded posts for old times sakes.
1992 was the last year Stitzel Weller distilled (Bulleit reopened it in '13). IMO the Stitzel juice was the magic sauce in Van Winkle. Each year over the past decade, you've had to buy progressively more aged releases of VW to get the Stitzel (10, FR, PVW 20, PVWFR23). Much of the 2013 release was stolen and I know some guys who camped out overnight with 400 people starting at 1:30 PM for a shot at a few cases of the 2014 the next day; that was the end. I suspect some "barrels lost in the rickhouse" will show up in the blend of a $1000 bottle some time - but the "real VW" is gone.
I'm not saying the bottle of 15 year old Pappy you waited in line to get is bad whiskey but personally I'd skip the line and pick something off of the shelf - not necessarily cheaper mind you.. There are plenty of good wheaters out there. You don't have to jump from MM to the White Whale of bourbon. Buffalo trace distils the Pappy now, so you aren't getting a bad product.
My choice for sometime now among all wheaters is W.L. Weller Antique 107 or Weller 12 . If you are one that thinks it's a sin to splash some water into any whiskey you might not care for the 107. Two stores in N. KY sell single barrel expressions of 107 several times a year. One of the stores even buys multiple barrels and lets you taste the difference between the bottlings. I know there are other sellers that buy casks, I think K&L is one of them. The vatted stuff is good as well though.
The developing white whale NDP bourbon is Black Maple Hill, but it's a rye. The AS bottles have tripled in price. What hurts is their regular 8-ish bottling has jumped from $20 - $35 locally. I hate when that happens.

Agreed. Great stuff OHMatt
I discovered Black Maple Hill a few years ago in NJ of all places. I lucked into three bottles of it last year ($55 each) and I have about 1/3 of my last bottle left. With the price increase on these I don't think that I'm willing to pay a high price for a bourbon that they do not even put the age on the label. With that said, it is darn good so it might depend on the price that I see it at next. However, I have heard that because of the demand this might be a once-a-year release from now on and I'm not into jockeying for stuff like that.
I was up in Tarrytown, NY last week for work and the liquor store across the street from my hotel had a bottle of Pappy for the low, low price of $1000. I asked the guy how long they have had it and he said a long time. He said that everyone asks the price and then moves on. It's good but I can buy A LOT of good bourbon for $1000.

Johnny, Van Winkles have wheat as their small grain. And the thing is, other than Maker's most people haven't tasted wheated bourbon. Many people prefer the wheated profile and find it is smoother. But when they go into a liquor store or bourbon bar and ask, "I really like Maker's but want something better." guess which name has always been provided? (Fitzgerald, Weller, Rebel Yell aren't it). People want to look cool, or at least not a novice when ordering, serving, or gifting.
Heaven Hill ingeniously introduced the wheated Larceny to fill Van Winkle void. It is Fitzgerald with a hip name and is "100 barrel small batch" (11,400 bottles). It's good bourbon, not stupid expensive. It isn't unreasonable to believe it has to be better than $10 Old Fitz Prime (which is available in a 750mL curved plastic traveller.) Annoyingly though Old Fitz 100 and Very Old Special Fitz 12 are missing from most shelves. Guess where the barrels are going.
My cousin (a DR.) took me to a bourbon bar he frequently visits since it is right up the street. He ordered a double VWFR and generously offered to buy me one. Instead of being appreciative, I had fun and loudly asked for bottom shelf Very Old Barton BiB ($14 750 retail) "over lots of crushed ice". I got looks, my intended effect. My cousin accused me of being a hipster and going for irony. I told him to taste it. He said it wasn't as good as VW and I agreed. He also asked me to buy him VOB for the second round.
More rambling, you asked for it.

Believe it or not, I actually know that it's a Wheat Bourbon, I have no idea why I came out with Rye. I must have had a brain fart! I was so intent at commenting on the $1000 asking price that I lost it!
Other than that, are you agreeing with me, that it's no the holy grail and that there are other great Wheat Bourbons out there?

Other than that, are you agreeing with me, that it's no the holy grail and that there are other great Wheat Bourbons out there?
Absolutely. Van Winkle was special but gone unless you have a grand. Pappy now is good, not that good, not by $$ and not by the effort to obtain it.
Wheated Bourbon is a much smaller team but I like them all. Have Weller and Rebel Yell in the cabinet now. I have been on the lookout for a "missing Fitzgerald" but might have to just swallow my indignation and buy Larceny.
People will notice or already have noticed the absence of Wheaters in the market and fill it. Buyer beware.
*mounting soap box*
The straight Rye whiskey craze is a prime example of what could happen to wheated bourbon. Five years ago, you could get Rittenhose, Overholt, and Wild Turkey Rye, and another I'm forgetting. Look at how many brands of Rye Whiskey are on the shelf now. It is widely believed (and most confirmed) LDI/MGPI of Lawrencburg Indiana distills all of these:
99 Bottles Rye
Angel's Envy Rye
Big Y Rye
Bone Snapper Rye
Bulleit Rye
Cleveland Rye Whiskey
Cougar Rye
Filibuster Rye
George Dickel Rye
George Remus Rye
Henderson Rye
High Liquors Rye
Hooker's House rye
J. Green Rye
James E. Pepper 1776 Rye
Knotter Rye
LeMont Rye
Lost Rye
O.K.I. Rye
Prichard's Rye
Redemption Rye
Riverboat Rye
Rough Rider Rye
Single Track Rye
Smokin' Joe's Rye
Smooth Ambler Rye
Smuggler's Notch Rye
Templeton Rye
Widow Jane Rye
Willett Rye
Winghart's Rye
Each of these brands will have a website with a marketing pitch something like "this micro-batch craft whiskey is made from the recipe discovered by Geraldo Rivera in Al Capone's treasure vault." In the end, after endless smoke and mirrors, and litigation, even Templeton was forced to admit they are buying their juice from the massive Seagram's/LDI/MGP (or whatever they rename it) plant.
Does that mean the whiskey is bad? No. But a bottle label and $25,000 gets you 100 cases of this "micro distilled craft whiskey" for market. That $80 bottle of craft Rye whiskey might not be as good as a $16 bottle of Rittenhouse. Things can go the other way as well; Bulleit Rye will actually be distilled by Bulleit in the near future
And thus to your point, not a holy grail, diminishing returns, etc.
Go buy a bottle of Rebel and put it into a fancy decanter. Tell your friend's it's the next Pappy. :tu

Most of what is known as "Bourbon" and what made Prohibition news was rye mash bills. Wheated mash bills were very few and in between, in general, although sales of Van Winkle for decades suffered due to that. SO, in order to make ends meet they had to sell barrels to others. This is where Black Maple Hill story comes in.
Black Maple Hill, or at least what it used to be, is no more. Sadly. Name and bottling rights were bought and moved to OR distillery, their new bottling, with the black type and label, is just not what the old one used to be and not worth the effort. New mash bill, new everything, and way below par.
Original one, as I dug into the story and rather very few details, seems the 15-17 year Van Winkle barrels that could not be sold in the days past and before the hoopla with Van Winkle started after a TV show a few years ago. Those barrels, previously scooped up by the guy in San Mateo and bottled as Black Maple, basically just a registered label in CA, are no longer available, as one can imagine with Van Winkle selling every bottle they have now. Oh well... Best Bourbon on the market, by far. Have only 9 bottles left after sharing some with my cousin. Cases of "old" Black Maple were sitting in SF Bay Area at $34 per bottle just a bit over a year ago, wish I just bought them all. Hindsight and all that... Although asked the shops to let me ASAP if they somehow see any old bottle appear.
If you see the new black font Black Maple bottles, and eventually you will as they ramp up production, stay away and save your money. Its not the same stuff.
Stocking up on Black Maple "siblings" now, seems many caught on and are now buying all they can, in Las Vegas there are maybe 2-3 bottles sitting on a shelf at any one time, seems new owners will not be producing them going forward with the new distillery now up and running. Shame, it was a good run, I'll just make sure to stock up on these 2 before they also "expire" like Black Maple Hill did. Total Wine in NY area ran out months ago and have no idea when new stock shows up, if ever.
As daily drinkers, though, Four Roses should not be discounted, even their very affordable Small Batch, which I prefer over Single barrel. They have 2 mash bills, and where Single Barrel has these two with 2 yeasts each blend (for "4 complexity levels"), Single Batch, has same 2 mash bills over 5 yeasts each for more than double the complexity. And its cheaper, to boot, at $25 per its probably the best QPR out there in Bourbon. Which reminds me as I am looking at empty bottles...

There's a depth of flavor and character that I look for when spending $50-60 on a bourbon that Blanton's just seems to be missing to me. For that price I can get a bottle of Booker's or two bottles of Old Weller Antique, or even Knob Creek, and get more complexity.
There's another one that I just can't think of right now. I'd heard great things about it for a couple of years, finally tried it, and it's flavor was utterly overpowered by a burnt marshmallow aftertaste. I'll rack my brain and try to remember it...

My wife does some arts & crafts at home and recently discovered that the Booker's case is the perfect size to hold her spools of ribbon. ......I picked up a couple of "ribbon holders" for my wife. The bottles of bourbon inside are a bonus for me. :D
That's actually pretty cool and a nice way to reuse an item that has character.
I've kept a box as well, so I think our house needs stackable spice racks.

Saturday at a poker tourney I had a few fingers of W.L. Weller Antique. Always a good pour and some ice chilled the 107.
For the Sunday night game I cracked open a bottle of Ezra 101. This was good before I put in some ice. When I drink on the rocks, I always need the first to be neat. The proof comes without a punch, the nose is nice, good thick feel to the bourbon with some nutty & vanilla notes. The finish was warm and peppery without a burn. This bourbon delivers without a hefty $$.

I am very novice when it comes to bourbon. I am more of a scotch and rum drinker. I ruined bourbon for myself with Jim Beam. However, recently my interest in bourbons was piqued when I stumbled on Lexington bourbon. Not high dollar, but IMO the flavor is much better than Jim Beam (which is all I have to compare it to) and it seems much less harsh.
With that said, I had Jim Beam rye with my brother-in-law, and I thought it was pretty fantastic--but it probably is just un-honed ability to taste.

For those who like Bulleit bourbon (and rye), and belong to Costco,
check out your local store for this great deal - hopefully it's there -
buy three 1.75 liters of Bulleit bourbon and/or rye, get $7 off each ($21 total)
Just purchased 2 bourbons & a rye (1.75 L) for $27 each!
That's about the cost of a 750ml bottle in most local stores.

As an ex-Chicago resident I miss Binny's in my life!
For this thread, I've always been a fan of the New Holland Beer Barrel Bourbon, and as a Rye fan I got excited about the Rye variety. Sadly, not on the same level. It has a level of sweetened that almost seems fake, and some off flavors, like someone mixed a touch of beer into the bourbon.

That's a shame. Is the bourbon made by New Holland, or just using New Holland beer in it? I'll have to see if they distribute the original version in Chicago and give it a try.

Yes sir! They are usually called “store picks”. Larger liquor stores will hand pick single barrel selections of an already existing product, for example Weller Antique 107, Knob Creek, Eagle Rare, blantons, Russels, 4Rs, ect. Store picks are almost always a step up in my opinion.

They for sure have the "Beer Barrel Bourbon" in Chicago, it's different due to the aging, but it's something I like to keep around. As far as I can tell they make their own, unless they are really great at hiding that fact. The barrels are first used for bourbon, then one of their stouts, and then back to bourbon (although I guess that technically makes it not a true bourbon).

Anyone tried Basil Hayden Dark Rye? They have it on the cheap by me, but I read a review and am afraid it might be too sweet. Has some port in it (not finished in port barrels) and is only 80 proof.
It's differnt, but in a good way.....I didn't find it sweet at all..BTW was on the bar at Metropolitan!

Got to cross something i have been want to try off the list. Was on a mission trip and one of the guys brought some Blanton's. Was very good, hope to find a bottle of my own sometime soon.
You and every other bourbon drinker on the planet. The scoop from my travelling customers. Hit the duty free on the way to the orient. Seems the Japanese pay top dollar for it and the distributors can make more $$ on it in duty free rather than us liquor stores.

I would check that out, but the last time I went to Asia was never. :D

Yea I have heard that a lot of good bourbon is going there because of paying top dollar. I'm going at bourbon like cigars, if I find it in my travels so be it, If not, oh well. Can find them for 90-100 online all day but to me, not worth double the msrp.
I did find a bottle of eagle rare, Weller 107, and regular Buffalo Trace so I'm happy.

Newest addition to the bar with an assist to a good BOTL (and a couple sidecars as well).

I did, I posted somewhere thanking you for the recommendation. I like it, change of pace, and definitely not too sweet.
So, Tic Tacs are coming with me. Glad to jelp the Team. :D

I cracked my 107 tonight, and it was most excellent. Been several months since I had the green, I thought it was pretty good, but doesn't compare to the Antique.

Tic Tacs are really useful. Seriously. They contain citric acid, which helps neutralize the palate between cigars. Hector Alfonso (Espinosa cigars) showed us this trick. He carries a baggie of citric acid powder (readily mistakes for cocaine when you start rubbing it on your gums)
Tic tacs do the trick too!

I've been enjoying Jim Beam Repeal Batch. It's only 20 bucks put is nice neat, with ice or mixed. Sure it's cheap but very good for the money. Perfect for guests or for when you want a cheap buzz. Way way better than their standard bourbon.

I’ve just started to get into bourbon this past year or so. I’ve enjoyed it for a while but couldn’t tell you two things about it. A couple of good neighbors, a trip to KY and my local store putting me on the list for an allocated bottle (and getting said bottle) have pushed me down the slope. I don’t have many preferences yet as my tastes range from ryes to sour mash to wheated bourbons, but I’m enjoying it.
Oh, and Tom. As you’re aware, that Weller Antique is pretty darn good. I’ve had it at a local bar. I enjoy it on the rocks. The Weller special reserve is surprisingly easy for me to get locally and is good for the price but can’t hold a candle to the Antique.

I am much like you are a relative bourbon newb. I agree with you on all counts...we have the SR by us now, one bottle limit but they seem to keep it stocked recently. Like you said, availability of 107 is a whole nother ball game. I had mine shipped from a friend in NJ.

I decided to stop by my local during my lunch break and just happened to catch a bottle of 107. A slight markup as it was priced around $55. I haven’t seen it on the shelves here, so I bought one.
