Just picked up a bottle of Elijah Craig 12 year old and I really enjoyed it. Very nice sweet corn flavor throughout. Not as intense as the 18 year old, but very good. Possibly the best bourbon for the price.

Just found out that my wife's next contract will be back in Knoxville. McScrooge's HERE I COME!!! Great selection, great prices!!! They had some single barrel Four Roses that they had the whole barrel made up for them last Christmas. Hope they have more this year!!!

Cool, hit me up if you swing through Nashville :tu

Watershed is made here in Columbus, OH and was reading about it in the local paper.

I was wondering if anyone has had anything from OYO? This is another distillery here in Ohio and they have a rye, whiskey, and bourbon.

Ok Bourbon Banterer's...

Admittedly I have little experience with Bourbons, Maker's Mark has been my go to for many years, after reading this thread and getting some advice from some of the guys here I went and tried 2 more bourbon's to add to my list...

Maker's Mark
Four Rose's Small Batch
Knob Creek

I have to say I enjoyed the Four Rose's Small batch's smoothness but missed "the burn" of my Maker's Mark... The Knob Creek was ok, just ok... I Didn't care for the heavy "bite" and while it had good "burn" I still enjoyed the "warmth" of the Maker's Mark better...

Forgive all the "quoted" words... I don't know if they are the proper terms to describe what I am trying to say but they are my best attempt...

So today when I was picking up another handle of Maker's Mark I asked the local ABC's shopkeeper about other Bourbons, Specifically the Buffalo Trace because I have heard a lot about it from others... He said not to waste my money... Anyone agree with that?

My next question would be if you were looking for a Bourbon with similar "Burn" "warmth" and "bite" to Maker's Mark, what would you suggest? What if you were trying to keep it affordable (under 50.00)?

The guy did say Woodford is probably the best bet, but with the price tag, It might be a while before I get around to that one...

..

Jim Beam Black is a very good value and comes close to what I would describe as a little more "rustic" or bold. Perhaps this is what you are going for?

Maker's 46 is very good as well. To me it's a bit lighter and more floral than regular Makers.

For a very bold and unrefined Bourbon, there is Bookers. One of the few that I couldn't handle. Quite a challenge.

Thus appears to be the Bourbon game. Much like cigars. Try a bunch in airplane bottles, or go to a good bar and sample to find what you like. Most important; drink what you like and like what you drink.

If you want really "rustic and affordable" there's always Military Special Bourbon and Heaven Hill Green. :r:r Seriously, don't try those.

Edit to say, I think Jim Beam Seven year (red) is one of the best for the money and quite under-rated.

I like Buffalo Trace, definitely worth a try and a good price.

For similar to Maker's I'd look at W.L Weller. I like the 107.

I like Woodford a lot as well although probably not my favorite. Although I probably couldn't choose just one.

Almost bought a bottle of the Eagle Rare 17 while back home, but my wallet told me to cool it(it has other plans for that money). Ended up grabbing some Angels Envy. :dr Just had me a glass and have thus decided it will be a bottle I WON'T be sharing at the shop.

Oh, and for Christmas my sister "infused" a bottle of Makers with bacon. Tried some neat, not bad, but definitely is a mixing liquor. The bacon is strong with that one. And she candied and chocolate coated the bacon she used in the process :dr

IDK if this counts but I had a guest traveling on new years that works for the Dickel distilleries, he hooked up a a fifth of Black Label and a Fifth of White Label for a decent rate on a room, got into the Black Label No. 8, Pretty good but I am told the White Label is better...

Not sure what side of town you are on, but in Avon there is a Crown's Liquor (which is conveniently located next to the shop) has a great selection of bourbons.....try the Four Roses, can get a fifth for about $22

Alas, they did not have it! Nor did they have any Stranahan's which I also want to try. They had the Stranahan's last year, but haven't gotten any in lately. There's a liquor superstore on the south side of Atlanta that I'll be going by in the next two months. I feel sure they will have the Corner Creek, probably also the Colorado whiskey (yeah, I know... Also NOT a bourbon, but I figure it's worth a try!)

I visited the Stranahan's distillery a year ago while I was in Castle Rock (near Denver) for my brothers wedding. It really is a small operation but very cool to see. I picked up a bottle at the end of the tour as I was VERY impressed from the samples they give you at the end. I highly recommend you pick up a bottle. One of my favorite whiskey's now. A highly impressive spirit. :chr

Heads Up!
Remember the "Traitor Jack" backlash when Jack Daniels
lowered the alcohol content of their whiskey a few years ago?

Well, get ready for the "Makers Mock" campaign!

I got an email today from Makers Mark stating that they are
reducing the alcohol percentage from 45% to 42%. I don't
know about you, but I don't put water in my whiskey, and I
will not support a distiller who does it.

As soon as I see 90 proof Makers Mark replaced with 84 proof
stuff, I will begin my boycott. Too many quality bourbons out
there to pay the same price for a watered-down version.

Anyone with me?

A couple of fine BOTL's here are assisting me with the 2012 limited edition Four Roses small batch and single barrels.

The "high end" liquor store here in Indy didn't have any 2012 limited editions and I thought I'd give a place about a 5 minute drive where I work out a try. They have the biggest beer selection I've seen, so it was the only other hope I had in town. Sure enough, they had the Jefferson 18 year I heard so many things about and noticed the small batch limited reserve from 2011, so I decided to pick it up since it was "only" $69.99 there.

What's your take on the Jefferson Presidential Select 18 year?

Update on my "Makers Mock" rant -
I received the following email today from the distillery:

Dear Ambassador,

Since we announced our decision last week to reduce the alcohol content (ABV) of Maker's Mark in response to supply constraints, we have heard many concerns and questions from our ambassadors and brand fans. We're humbled by your overwhelming response and passion for Maker's Mark.
While we thought we were doing what's right, this is your brand, and you told us in large numbers to change our decision.

You spoke. We listened. And we're sincerely sorry we let you down.

So effective immediately, we are reversing our decision to lower the ABV of Maker's Mark, and resuming production at 45% alcohol by volume (90 proof). Just like we've made it since the very beginning.

The unanticipated dramatic growth rate of Maker's Mark is a good problem to have, and we appreciate some of you telling us you'd even put up with occasional shortages. We promise we'll deal with them as best we can, as we work to expand capacity at the distillery.

Your trust, loyalty and passion are what's most important. We realize we can't lose sight of that. Thanks for your honesty and for reminding us what makes Maker's Mark, and its fans, so special.

We'll set about getting back to bottling the handcrafted bourbon that our
father/grandfather, Bill Samuels, Sr. created. Same recipe. Same production process. Same product.

As always, we will continue to let you know first about developments at the distillery. In the meantime please keep telling us what's on your mind and come down and visit us at the distillery. It means a lot to us.

Sincerely,

Rob Samuels
Chief Operating Officer,
Ambassador-in-Chief

Well I tried some Rye last night, different than bourbon but it was pretty good.
I wonder if we could change this thread to "The Whiskey Thread" so we do not need a bunch of different threads to talk about whiskeys?
Or do you guys think we should make a whiskey thread and keep bourbon seperate?
I was surprised at the limited selection of Rye locally.
I selected this one after ready a review online:

Eagle Rare is quality stuff but my goto bourbon is Woodford, especially if making an Old Fashioned.

I know this is a bourbon thread, but for those that like Rye, try Willett Family Estate Rye. A little spice, a little sweetness and very good neat. Turns into magic while smoking certain cigars.

Also, if you can find it, give Templeton Rye Whiskey a try. Research this one a bit as the story behind it is very cool. Al Capone had this stuff smuggled into jail...

Just sipped down a couple glasses of the Kirkland brand (Costco) bourbon, and I gotta say it's pretty damn good. If you're only into the fancy bourbons, like 4 roses or bulleit, you may not appreciate it. But for a Knob Creek fan like myself, this stuff rocks. For the record, I love 4 roses and have not tried Bulleit. Price tag on the Costco bourbon is $17 a liter and it's 103 proof. I tried the bourbon with a 2002 LGC mdo#3 which was an amazing smoke and may have improved the beverage it was paired with by virtue of how awesome it was.

Have recently been making Manhattans & Old Fashions with Bulliett rye whiskey & have been converting ppl in droves from the old Bourbon & Canadian whisky based cocktails to rye.

Rye almost went the way of the dinosaurs, after Prohibition, but seems to be making a comeback.

I hate Old Fashions, but like them with rye whisky.

I decided to crack it open when I got home from work this morning.

I've probably only sampled maybe 10 different bourbons and been stockpiling bourbon for the day I do start to develop a much bigger taste for it.

If I have one word to describe it, it's wow. This is what I've been waiting for-great flavors without singing the hairs off on the outside of your throat.

I read a lot of reviews off sourmashmanifesto.com. Now, back to my bourbon. :tu

Had a small sampler bottle of Knob Creek Smoked Maple today. Wow was it good. I was expecting a sickly sweet syrupy concoction, but what I got was a really good bourbon with a smooth light maple flavor and just a touch of smokiness to dial the maple sweetness back. Would love to get some more of this, but just wish it was priced a little better.

I'll have to give that a try. The only "maple" whiskey I've tried is Crown Royal Maple and I didn't care for it at all. Thought it might be good poured over some pancakes, but not served in a glass.

That's what I was afraid this was gonna be, but was pleasantly surprised. Was actually a decent maple flavored bourbon instead of the bourbon flavored maple syrup I was expecting. And glad you mentioned that about the Crown maple. I was planning on trying it in the near future, but I think I'll take a pass now.

Hey guys I just started really getting into Bourbons (and other American whiskeys) recently. It really started for me when during my visit to Colorado for my brothers wedding we toured the Stranahans (not bourbon) distillery and picked up a bottle there. I just fell in love with it and started me down this path. My go to's so far are 4 Roses Single barrel & Buffalo Trace but lately on every pay day I've been picking up a new bottle of Bourbon or whiskey just to try. I find that I really go for the higher proof bourbons just because they pack so much more flavor usually (not all the time though) but I'll try any of them really.

Currently trying Old Grand Dad 114 (for the price its a very nice budget bourbon but certainly there is better out there)

Last tried Bookers Single Barrel (Found it to be surprisingly drinkable neat considering it's proof and I really enjoyed this as well but not an every day bourbon considering the price)

Anyways, just wanted to make my presence known on this thread :cool2:

Final verdict: I don't think it's worth the extra $20. It's just a tad smoother but doesn't have the sweetness like the regular Woodford has. It does have a long finish with hints of vanilla. It really reminds me of some rums (Zacapa 23 and Diplomatico) but with less sweetness and vanilla.

*please note that I'm a bourbon newbie*

With that said, I would really like to track down a bottle of the Old Forester Birthday bourbon. If anyone can find me a bottle, I would like like to give you a E-hug

Picked up Knob Creek Single private barrel select $ 4 Roses 2013 small batch LE today. Haven't cracked the 4 Roses but Thought I'd give Knob Creek a try. For the price and proof it's very nice. Very heavy sweet corn smell and in terms of sweetness it almost matches 4 Roses single barrel but it has a little most burn going down. Pretty nice considering I was only going in to pick up 4 Roses single barrel but they happened to be out but had a few alternatives instead. :)

Couldn't agree more! The last bottle I had was 68% ABV and after cutting the first dram and after that I didn't cut anymore. Really great stuff but you've got to be careful 2-3 glasses and you're getting pretty close to blitzed in some cases. I guess it depends on what you call a glass. I usually pour doubles and sip so I'm done after 2.

My "cheap, everyday" bourbon - Evan Williams, especially the Single Barrel. A great bourbon at a great price.
My "mid-range, glass on the weekends" bourbon - Woodford Reserve
My "special occasion" bourbon - Pappy van Winkle, of which I've only ever had one bottle.

Hey Scotty, there are a few good suggestions in this thread but a good place to start would be Woodford Reserve. Not the Double Oak or whatever, just the straight stuff.

Although I prefer my bourbon neat, you might try throwing just 1 or 2 ice cubes in the glass and let them do their thing until melted. It will lower the temp just a bit of the bourbon which some feel you get less alcohol burn from. It also dilutes the drink just a bit but not too much to ruin the taste.

Pretty soon you will be getting on the wait list for Pappy's.

You are probably going to get a ton of suggestions though but Woodford is a pretty safe bet IMHO.

Picked up a bottle of this EH Taylor. It is supposed to be on par with Pappy's. Anybody tried this yet?

I would say good score. Some folks say it is better than Pappy's. I would say that one isn't better than the other. Both are excellent in their own right and it is always a good find.

Went into one of my usual stores to pick up some beer and saw this in the cabinet

I was going to stop buying bourbon for a while after the Pappy release but couldn't resist since it was close to retail price. I asked the worker if they had anymore of the BTAC release and he said they only had the Pappy 20yr that was next to my bottle. They were selling it for $699!! Laughed at the guy and told him I'll pass. They had a bottle of 15yr last week and I guess some poor sap bought it at their asking price ($499).

I'll have to go back in a few days because I think they have more of the BTAC release but are just putting them out as the previous bottle sells

This ever happen to you? I'm enjoying some Knob Creek single barrel while smoking a cigar. I have a glass of sprite (to cut the nicotine from the cigar) and a glass of water (to cut the bourbon after all it's 120 proof) So, I proceed to cut the bourbon with sprite! Now I have a lemon/lime flavored glass of bourbon!

Interesting. Yamazaki and Hakushu aren't that bad actually. Drink them a lot when I am on the road.

Not a Beam fan anyway, although people like their Makers and that flavored Pinnacle vodka stuff.

Nice little payout for sure...

I have simple tastes: and I know its not, strictly speaking, a Bourbon, but I sure do enjoy JD.

These liquor threads are experiencing a re-vitalization, obviously owing to the fact that propane is through the roof.

Me thinks that every single one of them will be revitalized singlehandedly.
