Been real curious about the KC SB. A lot of bourbon snobs look down on Jim Beam products, (JB, KC, Basil, Bookers, etc). While regular JB sucks, I like KC. It has a different character that I like.
Peer pressured myself into buying another bottle, since it was Derby weekend (along with a few cigars :) ). Drinking it now, Elijah Craig 12yr. Been wanting it for awhile. Good stuff right out of the bottle, especially for the price, under $30 here. Tough to beat for the age and price, although Weller 12yr may have it beat.

Picked up a bottle of Eagle Rare single barrel that was cask selected by the local retailer for a one off bottling. Bigger than the regularly Eagle Rare 10yr. Good like the regular Eagle Rare with a little more of everything.
See a number of people mention Bulleit bourbon. I have only tried it once or twice and it didn't stand out particularly but their Rye is outstanding. Delicious sipping rye.

First time I strolled in here. Like a nice bourbon from time to time. Usually run with KC SB as was anotated above. lol.
My most recent score required the purchase of a litre bottle fo malbu rum to bribe my gf's sister into picking up two bottles. Should have them in hand in two weeks when she comes out this way for a visit. Can't wait.

Eagle Rare 10yr is here as well as some of the Antique Collection. Matt_N-GA and I found some Sazerac, Weller and Stagg. You need to check Greens in downtown, Tower or Total Wine. They seem to be the only ones in the distribution chain.

Picked up Very Old Barton 100 proof 6 year. SOLID for $12. Now my go to budget bourbon. I'd say it's up there with some twice its price or more. Not amazing, but a solid bourbon. Nice flavor, finishes a little bland though, which makes you want to drink more to get the flavor back, hah.

The Eagle Rare 17 was the one I was most interested in and couldn't find it. Two years ago I ran into the experimental stuff in SC but this year I called a bunch of stores and no one had received any. You may want to stay on top of Greens and TW in Greenville, not a bad day trip from your neck of the woods.

I've heard the ER17 has been declining the last few years. Not that great anymore. It may be because apparently there was a problem with the logistics of releasing a 17yr every year, so it's been stored in a stainless steel tank for awhile, then bottled when need be. Or so I heard... The WLW is my favorite boubron to date.

Mine too, but Four Roses 120 Anniversary is a VERY close second. The notes of vanilla and cinnamon in that :dr
Those were the only 2 bottles I've ever had that I rationed out to last a whole 2, MAYBE 3 weeks.
I guess when I get back from Blowing Rock we will have to get back together for another herf.
I would do it THIS weekend, but I would rather not get a DUI the weekend before a week off of work.
Although technically, that's the week to DO IT. But I want to get a visit with my mother and sister in before I do anything stupid, lol.
I picked up a bottle today, the Evan Williams Single barrel. I looked at the WLW that Bill was talking about but it
basically represented the sum of my beer and liquor budget for the day, so I passed. I need to review the thread
before I buy a bottle, cause I only vaguely remember people saying the EWSB was good enough to take a shot.
I am too well-stocked on Bourbon just now, so it was odd that I bought a bottle. I just should have bought the Zaya rum.

While on vacation I got a bottle of the Basil Hayden as well. I must say, it is a disappointment. I don't know how to describe it, but it wasn't real good neat, not as good as a number of others I enjoy. When a few ice cubes melted in it, it was decent.
It won't be something I will purchase again.
I personally can mix any cheaper whiskey with ginger ale, 7-up, etc... and it really doesn't much matter, to do so with a more expensive libation seems a waste. And if that particular liquor isn't any good unless mixed, then what's the point.
(maybe my taste buds are not refined enough, or are too battered for what libation is poured into a mix, as if it really makes a difference)
Peace of the Lord be with you.

I did receive a bottle of Angels Envy which I find interesting. Though, I don't have any final thoughts on it yet. Low in proof, pretty smooth and quite different. I'm guessing the port barrell finish puts a twist on this bourbon to give it some seperation from the others.

I personally don't mix bourbon with anything except an occasional ice cube, so to ask the question of if it's not good mixed, what's the point will likely get many answers like mine.
A majority of the bourbons being talked about in this thread are drank neat, or with a cube or two. I agree with part of your statement, if your going to mix it with ginger ale or 7-Up, then yes, do not buy the more expensive bourbons.
As far as not liking it neat, no problem with that at all. Different strokes for different folks. I don't mind Basil Hayden, but it's definitely not at the top of my list, even in the lower priced category.
Nice thing with bourbon is that there are plenty to choose from, many of which are good and not terribly expensive at that.

The BTAC I'm sure will be popping up soon. Unfortunately I've backed off the high end bourbons for the time being. I drink through them too fast to afford them, lol. I do want to pick up a bottle or two of some of the Four Roses 120th though. Great stuff. For now, there are plenty of sub $50 bourbons out there for me to enjoy.
Over the last 2 or 3 weeks, I have tried the Van Winkle 12 Yr Lot B and Basil Hayden. While I enjoyed the Basil Hayden, I thought the Van Winkle was terrific. Really want to check out the Van Winkle 23 Yr. Must be amazing.

It's a lighter bourbon than most others but that is not meant as a criticism - more a stylistic descriptor. Still bolder than wheaters like Maker's Mark or Weller. Not a bourbon that has most enthusiasts raving about it but it's what you think that counts.
I had some of the Baker's last night. Pretty smooth and enjoyable.

Thanks, Peter! Very, very affordable!!! It'd be nice to find another good sippin' quality bourbon for less than $60!!!!! Few and far between. I've never seen it in Alabama, which means it's not on the state's "approved" list. I've been thinking about trying the 18 year....I guess that'll be the next bottle purchase.
I think you mean Elijah Craig 18 year though.
Elijah Wood 18 Year single Barrel...so very good!

I'm sure I'll get back into bourbon. Set aside a few hundred $$$ for the 2012 WLW, Stagg and Pappy.

Thanks for the feedback. (The bottle I saw was 750ml, though I believe the store owner referenced a 375ml bottle as well.) I am fond of the "standard" BT, but the single oak project bottle I saw was nearly 3 times its cost ... so I've not bitten the bullet yet.
It was my understanding that Buffalo Trace not only used differs seasoning and charing techniques, but the also used different mash bills for the whiskey that filled the barrels. The idea was that no two barrels would be alike. I was also under the impression they were only released in 375ml bottles. If you saw a 750ml bottle I would grab it, because it must be very rare. I haven't tasted them myself so I can't speak from experience but that is what I have read. You can go to the Buffalo Trace web site to get the pedigree on each barrel, but you have to do a review of the bottle you are requesting, so I haven't gone that far yet. I hope that helps.

Yeah, well....... Got to have them available to buy them! Which is a no-go for most any decent bourbon in the state of Alabama! Our ABC board is especially retarded on the stuff they let in. And we are at least 1/3 higher on most costs! Example: I can buy a 375 ml bottle of irish cream at state store for $19.95. In Knoxville this past week, I purchased a 1.75 liter of same brand for $25.

Oh, definitely!!! Picked up a bottle of Four Roses, Single Barrel, Barrel Strength last week. Bottled for the store I got it at (McScrooge). I've had their Four Roses, Single Barrel (not Barrel Strength) from last year, and it was good also. But they had about 12 bottles of different boozes there for sampling, including the two Four Roses bottled for them. The Barrel Strength had tremendous flavor benefits over the regular strength (which was also good, but seemed muted compared to the Barrel Strength). However, there was a good $30 difference in price!
Not a bourbon, but I also picked up a bottle of Talisker Distiller's Edition from 1992 that was sitting high up on a shelve (above the current 2002 version). Got it for the same price as the 2002!! Also picked up two handles of the real Irish Cream (not that malt beverage crap they pass off at the grocery stores!), plus a 1.75 l bottle of Andrews Long Island Tea mix (for my wife). It was a very successful trip. And the good news, that was just the first week of my wife's 13-week contract, so I'll be back in Knoxville several times over the next 3 months (or more, if her contract is extended). So I'll have several opportunities to refill my cabinet!

Alas, they did not have it! Nor did they have any Stranahan's which I also want to try. They had the Stranahan's last year, but haven't gotten any in lately. There's a liquor superstore on the south side of Atlanta that I'll be going by in the next two months. I feel sure they will have the Corner Creek, probably also the Colorado whiskey (yeah, I know... I've got two open bottles of bourbon right now (Conecuh Ridge and Knob Creek single barrel), so I don't want to open the barrel strength Four Roses yet.
It's hard for me to think of McScrooges as on the high price, for no other reason than they are significantly lower than Alabama prices! I'm not disputing your assessment AT ALL! It's just the relative difference that makes it seem cheap to me!! I generally check out Thunder Road (a block from my wife's hotel) for competitiveness. But they have more wine, less beer and liquor than McScrooges.
As to Nashville, I've got a sister that works part time at a store near Lebanon. That gets me a 25% discount, but she is limited on how much she can buy at that discount, so I only tap that source a couple times a year, and then, usually for the higher priced goodies!
Some nights its Blantons and other it's $10 JTS Brown. And this is one of those nights.

Four Roses Single Barrel, barrel strength that was selected by a local Knoxville store, and bottled exclusively for them. They also have exclusive single barrel (but not barrel strength). Both were good (had tasting table), but the barrel strength just knocked me down with the flavor intensity!
I assume by "blend", you meant "recipe". This one is QESQ (20% Rye mashbill/floral yeast. Bottled 10/15/2010. The shop is McScrooge's, in the south part of Knoxville. Great selection of bourbons. BUT... Even better selection of Scotch (for those so inclined!)

I've got several options tomorrow at Knoxville store. I noticed on my recon run yesterday that they have Clear Creek. However, they want $33.95 for a 750 ml bottle! Way more than Peter is able to get this for! They have Old Forester Birthday Bourbon for about the same price. Several nicer other brands that are single barrel for $49 and $59.
Will have to make some hard choices tomorrow (on way back to Bama). But, WILL be leaving with at least two bottles of something (one each of two different bourbons)

Neither of these are (and probably will never be) available in Bama, so I pretty much have to grab these special items any time I find them! It will probably be a month before I finish the two bourbons I have open, so it will be a while til I try these to give a review! That doesn't mean I wont' buy seconds if I find them and have the money! Not many Woodfords I've tried that I didn't love!!

I finished the bottle of bourbon I've been working down. I decided tonight to open the Woodford Reserve Double Oak I picked up last week.
People, this is NOT your everyday Woodford!!!! I'm drinking it straight-up, which is my normal method of sippin bourbon. Initial taste on my lips and front of tonge was much sweeter than I would have guessed. Then, as the whiskey flows back, it developed a sting and bite on the back of my mouth like it is 100+ proof (90 proof). The double oak finish on this bourbon manifest itself with an expected smoky taste that is much closer to the smoky peat taste of good scotch! This bourbon goes through half a dozen changes on each sip. While I don't usually use ice or water, I'd think this bourbon would be even more complex if a single cube of ice was added. I'd buy this one again, if I run across it.

It is sweet, but not overly so. Over ice it has a VERY smooth, very drinkable quality that just seems to beg for one more sip.

At Xmas, I bought a 750ml for $27. When I saw the 1.75 for $39.99, it was a no brainer. (I had a 5% off coupon which lowered the price to $37.99)

I had a tiny sample of this last week. You are spot on. I usually drink my bourbon neat, but this would benefit from a little water to open it up and mellow it out some. Gonna have to look for this soon.

Poured myself 2 fingers of Corner Creek Bourbon tonight and floated a nice size ice cube in it. I think that added a bit more sweetness and smoothness to this brand. Drinking it neet, the bourbon has more depth and density. Really enjoying this bourbon. Thanks again to Peter (Pnoon) for turning me on to this brand:tu

I've worked the Woodford Reserve Double Oak down to maybe 3 sittings. I'll probably finish it off this weekend. I'd finish it on the 4th, but I won't be at home, and the friends we will be spending the holiday with will have lots of family over that do not drink, so I'll hold the finish over for a few days.
This leaves the question of what to open next. I'm leaning towards the Woodford Reserve Master's collection Rye from this year. That way, if I really like it, I can look for some more before it disappears for good off the shelves!

Hey,
I was out in the field today in Glendale, CA and decided to stop by this fairly nice looking liquor store after completing my last inspection.
Checking out the bourbon section of their good stuff located behind the cash register, I noticed there was two bottles of George T. Stagg,
71.5% abv/143 proof. The price per bottle is $124.99.
I know there was some interest in this brand and some of you where a wishing. If you're interested, shoot me a PM and I'll give you the local telephone number and name for this liquor store located in Glendale, CA... :tu

Good luck on that!!! I'd buy ALL the Four Grain that you found, personally!! I still think the Four Grain and the Sweet Mash were the best, by far! But.... I haven't cracked open the Rye offering from last year. I didn't really care for the Sanoma Cutler, and really didn't care for the Maple Wood Finish from 2 years ago. Ended up drinking the Cutler, but gave the almost full bottle of Maple Wood Finish away to my son.
There was a small store in downtown Gatlinburg, Tennessee that was off River Road (vs Main Street). The owner had half a dozen bottles at home in his personal stash. I'd tried to talk him out of one a couple years ago, but no luck. Then, last year, the property owner sold out, they tore down the small retail center and the fronting property on Main Street, and were in process of some big project. I have no idea where the store went, or even if it re-opened anywhere. Which is a shame, cause I feel sure I could have talked him out of one bottle (with a decent high offer). I paid right at $100 per bottle on the three I originally purchased. Wish I'd put one back, now!
But, seriously, if you run across several bottles, and don't want them all, I'd be very interested in acquiring one or more of the Four Grain!!

Digging up old threads again.. Bourbon is my drink of choice. I'm gonna buy a $50 bottle of some Scotch this paycheck to try and force myself to like it.. But Bourbon is my mainstay. I'm gonna have to dig through this thread more to find some good suggestions.. For me, I've tried the following:
Baker's [Forced my brother to throw in on a $50 of this.. He almost died that night. Puked on his brand new table the first night they had it]
Buffalo Trace
Bulleit
Evan Williams Black Bourbon
Four Roses
Jim Beam White, Jim Beam Black, Jim Beam Green, Jim Beam Devil's Cut, and Jim Beam Red Stag [Don't care too much for the Stag]
Knob Creek
Maker's Mark
Old Forresters Birthday Bourbon '09
Old Granddad
Wild Turkey, Wild Turkey Rare Breed
Woodford Reserve
Now, being as I'm a youngin' -- I haven't done much sippin' on these. Just shots. I'm forcing myself to slow down and do some sippin'. I had some Crown Royal Black last weekend, poured it over 2 ice cubes. Pretty damn good with the Alec Bradley Prensado Churchill I had.

This is NOT a bourbon, but it is a spirit I read about last year, and have finally found, and laid a bottle into my supply cupboard! I'm interested in seeing how this taste, since I am a root beer fan, and was instantly intrigued by this recreation of the original root liqueur from early American history! I don't think I'll be opening this until around New Years, but will post my thoughts when I do pop the cork!
http://i1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc403/svillekid/RootWhiskey.jpg
This Bourbon grabbed my attention for several reasons:
First, I've never had it!!
Second, It's small batch, and any small batch bourbon has my attention,
Third, It's gotta be family, somewhere in the past (I'm half Fitzgerald!) as almost all the southern Fitzgeralds are from the three brothers that came over from Ireland in the 1700's!
This one will have to wait for some time to be opened, however. I have 5 more small batch whiskeys I will pick up in 3 weeks, and at least one is already promised to be opened first!

Is this still the bourbon thread? :D
I recently have been enjoying a bottle of Black Maple Hill, really good imho. Also (while not a bourbon) I opened a bottle of High West Rendevous Rye which has been outstanding. But the highlight of my week last week was going to Matt-N-GA's and sampling Old Van Winkle 10, High West Double Rye, Buffalo Trace Single Oak, Woodford Reserve Master's 4 Wood, and Eagle Rare 17. They were all good but the ER 17 stood out above the others.
I see Larceny mentioned/pictured above. I tried it at a bar recently and thought it was pretty darn good. My Dad called tonight and said the store by him is having an introductory sale at $9.99 for the 750ml and $19.99 for the 1.75, I am going up there tomorrow to stock up

Is this still the bourbon thread? :D
I recently have been enjoying a bottle of Black Maple Hill, really good imho. Also (while not a bourbon) I opened a bottle of High West Rendevous Rye which has been outstanding. I'm drinking Black Maple Hill right now, it is my favorite sippin' bourbon.
That Larceny Bourbon has a mail -in rebate.

Hello Bourbon Thread...
Been a fan of Maker's Mark for a few years now as an affordable "Whiskey"... recently I was corrected, Makers Mark is, in fact, a Bourbon...
So I thought I would drop by and ask you fellas what other affordable Bourbons are worth a try and readily available? What bourbons did you guys start out on?
Thanks for the info,
Rob

Define affordable!:D
I've brought bottles from $20, to over $100. I consider a good bourbon at less than $50 to be affordable!
Woodford Reserve. Eagle Rare ($25+/-). Old Forester's Birthday Bourbon. Blanton's. Knob Creek. Certain Four Roses can be found under $50. Buffalo Trace is worth a try, and is usually under $25. For the price, Evan William's Single Barrel will knock your socks off! (also usuallu under $25).
Of these, Blanton's is probably the most expensive, but can usually be had for around $40-45. Happy shopping!

Whisky Advocate declared the Barton Very Old and the Evan Williams Black Label to be the best bourbon buys for the money last year if that helps. Sounds like they'd be a step down from Makers Mark in terms of quality though.
Wellers is also a wheated bourbon (like Maker's Mark) and that may be they way to go, but I do like SKs idea of Evan William Single Barrel as well...

Woodford and Four Roses Small Batch are my go tos as the stereotypical poor college student(working in a cigar shop barely covers my cigar hobby :r), both great bang for the buck(~$35 and ~$30 locally). If you cut yours with any water, try the Four Roses Single Barrel, which can be found for ~$38 in the right place.
The nice thing about bourbon is you can grab a very good bottle for under $50, as opposed to single malt scotches, which start at that.

How was the 4 Wood?

How was the 4 Wood?
To be honest it was a little hot, but still very tasty. It was out shined a little by the ER 17, but still a great bourbon.

Thanks :tu I think it retails at $100+/-. Is it worth that?

Woodford Reserve's Master's Collection is always priced at $100 +/-
Worth it? Depends. If gladly pay that for the original Four Grain or the Sweet Mash from 2 years ago. But was disappointed in the Sanoma Cutler(?) and the Maple Wood if the past. I haven't broken open my bottles of Rye from last year, so can't comment. Honestly, for that money, you'd probably be better off with 2 bottles of Four Rose single barrel. Or, one bottle of Four Roses Single Barrel Barrel strength, and a bottle of Evan Williams single barrel. And maybe change left in your pocket.
I think Woodford has helped promote small batch distilling and given other small batch makers something to cheer about. But they are probably overpriced compared to what's now out there! Does that mean I wouldn't buy a bottle? Only if I could taste test it first!
Honestly, of the seven bottles I pictured several posts ago, NONE were over $50, even the Florida palm, which has a distillation of only 1000 gallons. I'd rather spend $100 on two bottles of small craft whiskeys than $100 on one bottle that has, so far, been only 50% hits with me!

Ian, what kind of pricing have you found on the 20? WA State just changed our liquor laws going from all State run, to private industry so the distribution is pretty screwed up right now. I've only found one Pappy bottle in stock somewhere and the shop is frickin trying to rape someone... after tax, it's $299 for the 20 year!?!

Ummm, pass. I paid $185 for the 20, and $279 for the 23. $299 for the 20 is just stupid.

Picked up a bottle of Larceny yesterday before work. Haven't tried it yet as I was too tired after work to stick around and pour me a glass.
I'm hoping to grab a bottle of Four Roses Single Barrel LE 12 when I get back up to my parents' places for Christmas.
