Drinking some more Very Old Barton, I don't understand what the guys on straightbourbon.com see in this stuff.. I find it drinkable, but there are many other bourbons in the same price range that I like much better.

Old Fitz BIB and Ancient Ancient Age much better IMHO.

This thread makes me wish I was still in the states...bourbon is hard to come by in Germany.
selection at the supermarkets is slim but if you order online you have a decent selection including makers mark, knob creek, wild turkey, four roses, pappy van winkle...

I've grown to like this, mostly the 6yr, and plan to pickup the BIB. Definitely not great, but I you stated drinkable and cheap.

I haven't had the AAA 10yr but look to grab one soon.

I got to try some Pappy 23 year old. It had a great flavor on the front end but was hot going down. Found that to be strange for a bourbon so old. Sure glad I didn't pay for it.

After my brutal year at work i was gifted a 100$ gift card to a grocery store... Lets just say the Bulleit Bourbon is going down well tonight ;)

This has to be.. ( not sure if its my favorite) but the most unique bourbon i have ever had... Smooth, Yet with a killer bite... That leaves your mouth pretty quickly. I know it has to be the 2/3 Rye- 1/3 Corn they use in the mash.. but wow... Great stuff none the less, Its making me want to venture in the Rye world more than my bottle of (ri)2 that i have collecting dust because of its cost $$$ haha.

Cheers!

Purchased my first ever bottle of bourbon today. A bottle of Maker's Mark. It was interesting trying to get all the wax off in order to open it. But the work was well worth it. Incredibly flavorful, and will now replace Crown Royal as my drink of choice.

I've never been much of a drinker, but am finding that I really prefer this to beer. So I will keep a close eye on this thread and use recommendations here for future purchases.

I do not enjoy Makers the Most compared to other bourbons.. But there is a bit of Sound Truth with the makers mark name... It was made ( age, proof, everything) to revolve around one thing, To get rid of the Bitter tastes in most bourbons. So on that note, they did a wonderful job!!!

I picked up a couple of those bottle/flask combos. The 99-09 EWSB isn't as good as last years' IMHO. It is still enjoyable but a bit on the mellow side. I think you will enjoy it, but it does get better..

That being said, I am going to pour myself some more right now..

Arrgghh. Never use cold water/ice with fine bourbon. The molecules in colder water effect the bourbon in a negative way as compared to using room temp water. I read this on a bourbon bb, so I believe it to be true.

If you are used to bourbon, don't expect the same with GJ. It's not a bourbon, but a Tennessee whisky. Charcoal filtered like regular JD, but a bit smoother. I got a bottle during the holidays. I couldn't drink it neat, as I do with almost all bourbons. Had to mix in some water.

Arrgghh. Never use cold water/ice with fine bourbon. The molecules in colder water effect the bourbon in a negative way as compared to using room temp water. I read this on a bourbon bb, so I believe it to be true.

This is somewhat true, but not completely. I've worked events with Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve, and Jeffersons Reserve and have tasted bourbons with various master distillers. When trying a bourbon out for the first time, it is recommended to first try it neat. After a few sips to get the initial flavors, it's recommended to add 1-2 ice cubes or a splash of spring water. The ice melting and or water into the bourbon actually opens up the bourbon to additional flavors. It is recommended to use spring water/ice cubes when adding to a bourbon. It's not really the cold/ice that has a negative effect, it's the impurities in the tap water that could alter the taste in a negative way, at least that's what I've been told.

In the end though, bourbon is just like cigars, drink what you want, how you want, just as long as you enjoy it. :tu

Here is a method that in my experience, has yielded the best results when drinking bourbon. Unfortunately, I don't have a way to make these. When I have had the chance to use the "ice rock" it has been remarkable.

I bought the bottle based off a recommendation from one of the people at the Ford truck plant I worked with the last few weeks. He didn't steer me wrong. While down there on another trip a couple months ago, I bought the small samplers for Woodford Reserve, Basil Hayden and Buffalo Trace. All were really good but I thoroughly enjoyed the Basil Hayden. Had a completely different taste to me that I found to my liking. Not sure why I didn't pick up a bottle of that, but will when I'm sure I'll be headed back. Heaven forbid I get some free time to try the bourbon sampling at the store (Liquor Barn). But then again, the OT helps pay for all these purchases. :D

Look interesting. My problem with them would stem from the fact that I like to eat the ice (bad dental habit). Hell, I'd probably try to munch down on one, and break half my teeth!!

Let us know about any taste effect, and how long they keep the drink cold! I like the part about no water to water down the bourbon, since I generally like mine "neat" anyway!

excellent!! But....... Please, no chewing! ROFL!

On serious side, this does look like a viable alternative to keeping a bunch of bottles of whiskey in the freezer just to have a cold drink once in a while! I will be especially interested in how long the Ice Rocks retain the cold.

I guess if you get enough of them in a package, you can always swap out the warming ones for more frozen cubes.

Another thought occures to me: any danger of the sharp edges of the Rocks etching or scratching the insides of the glasses? I have several crystal highballs I use for sipping, and would hate to scratch the insides up. Might be something to watch for when you give them a try. Maybe use something less valuable on first several used to get an idea of any damage to glass surfaces.

Look forward to your review!

My fiance bought me a set of Whisky Stones for xmas a couple years ago, and I use them all the time. They don't really keep the drink quite as cold as ice, but they keep it cooler than room temperature for at least an hour or so.... I may have to do some "testing" this weekend, adn see how they stand up to ice, or neat.

I had about 2 -3 oz of Wild Turkey with four whiskey stones last night. They worked well. It is difficult to tell because I had it with a stogie in the cold garage, so whether it was the stones or the cold air, I dunno. There are 9 stones in the set, so I could have easily used more but chose not to. But they did not seem to mess with the taste at all and it doesn't seem like it would be easy to scratch the glass with them either, unless you threw them at the glass hard. I will definetly be using these again.

It's Beam's new premium Rye Whiskey offering.
around $48
Fancy Vodka-esque looking bottle.

Nice smooth peppery flavor, a little bit of vanilla and honey as well.
I tried to pair it with a '08 PSP2 but ti was a bit overpowering. It did work well with few puffs of a PL Magnifico, lol.
Addiction tasted it as well and thin it's a very fine spirit.

Many people believe Basil Hayden is watered down Old Grand Dad. They are both Beam produced whiskey from the same mash bill.. Do yourself a favor and grab a bottle of the Bonded Old Grand Dad, (that is half the price of Basil) and add 20% water (100 proof down to Hayden's 80).

Now as to the different taste; Basil and OGD are both "high rye" bourbons - they have more rye in the mash than typical bourbon. Another good high-rye bourbon is Bulleit.

Since you enjoy high rye bourbon, you should also try Rye whiskey - in these Rye is higher percentage than the corn; at least 51%. My personal favorite to date is Rittenhouse Rye 100 proof (bottled in Bond). (I have tried these Rye Whiskeys: Jim Beam Rye, Ri, Michters, Old Overholt, Old Potrero, Pikesville, Rittenhouse, Sazerac, Wild Turkey 101 Rye)

Started off with Eagle Rare 10 Single Barrel after work.

My bedtime pour is some Old Weller Antique 10/107, a single barrel selection by Cork N' Bottle. (it is typically vatted). I need to stock up on it as it is my favorite "wheater" to date; I enjoy it more than Van Winkle 10/107 and Van Winkle Family Reserve "Lot B".

If you have a large local liquor store with "buying power", be sure to watch out for their selections. You can find single barrel offerings of typically vatted stuff, which can make a world of difference.

Eh, Makers and Woodford are way overrated and overpriced IMO. There's much better bourbon cheaper.

Drinking some Old Rip Van Winkle 10yr 107 right now.

I was finally about to score a bottle of this. It's hard as hell to get around here. I work at a big liquor store and have been trying to get this for 6 months. The 20 and 23yr are easier to get than this. I have the ORVW 12yr Lot B which is awesome and cannot wait to try this Pappy 15yr.

Today I did the Robby Albarado Celebrity Golf Tournament with Woodford Reserve. Tonight is a cigar dinner with Heaven Hill. Tomorrow is an event at J. Shepherd Cigar shop with Jefferson's Reserve. Wednesday is the annual KY Derby Celebrity Jocky Bartending event at Prime Lounge with Woodford Reserve. Friday is Oaks, Saturday is Derby. Whew. Needless to say, lots of bourbon this week!

William Larue Weller and George T. Stagg from the BT Antique Collection.
The Thomas H. Handy if you like ryes from the same collection

I know this thread has more of a purist tone to it, but when mixing bourbon, which do you reach for?

The reason I ask is with the Derby coming up, I will be making some mint julep's. Right now I only have a few sipping bourbon's and not sure I want to use them for the juleps. However, cheap bourbon usually means a cheap tasting mix drink as well. What are your thoughts?

As with any cocktail, a higher quality liquor produces a better drink, IMO.
Would you use a $200+ bottle for cocktails? Of course not. But any high-end bottle, say < $50, wll make a much better drink than the standard well booze. :2

I agree.

I have been reading some on the subject and it seems the better Bourbon's to use are the more woody, spicey ones than the sweeter ones to account for the sugar added in the julep. That sounds good to me, and gives me another reason to go buy some woodier bourbon's. :D

My rule of thumb is that I won't use a liqour to mix with that I wouldn't drink straight (I rarely drink a mixed drink though). That being said, I would probably use Bulleit or Jim Beam to mix with.

I have a bottle of this. It is on the sweeter end of the spectrum, but somehow it's also on the harsher end as well. The balance of sweet and smooth is not there.

BTW, this is the exact bourbon I am thinking of using in the mint julep.

My bourbon of choice varies, so I always try to keep the following on hand:
Bulliet
Woodford Reserve
Elijah Craig 18 yo
Eagle Rare
1792
Russel's reserve 10 yo
Maker's Mark
That way, I can select according to my mood. Those are the "utility bourbons"

I also have a few others, depending on the week and proximity to pay day. :) Really good ones don't tend to last very long.

I like Bulliet. Bulliet has a habit of revealing new flavors as it sits on a few ice cubes for a few minutes, as does the Woodford Reserve. I like it with some of the more full bodied cigars. where I will usually pair a Milder cigar with the Evan Williams single barrel or one of the higher end Russel concoctions; rare breed or Russel reserve 10 yo.

I thought it was good. It is not my all-time favorite bourbon, but it is very nice. It is very similar to standard maker's mark, but I thought the "toasted oak staves" made it a bit smoother. It is definetly worth picking up a bottle to add to the bourbon collection. :)

We have a ton of Makers 46 here. I have not tried it yet - but I feel like it is just a marketing scheme to "age" bourbon faster. Oak staves in oak barrels... I suppose I'm a traditionalist. Never been a fan of Makers or Woodford. Overpriced and overrated IMO. Much better bourbon for the price.

Not sure how many watchers of this thread went to the Shack Herf and got a taste of that
OLD whiskey that some nice man gave to DaveK. BUT, as it was the finest spirit I ever put
in me mouth, I was wondering, is there anything out there that comes anywhere CLOSE
to that stuff? I know it would have to have decades in a barrel to even come close,
since I think that was the allure of the mysterious bottles Dave had and SHARED (glug).
But I have been hell bent to find something like that in a store so I can have a shot now and
again. And to clarify, my shot took me 45 mins to drink at the shack. A little went a LONG way.
It literally exploded with flavor on the palate, like a liquid pop-rock under concentrate.
It was chewable. And I want to do it again.

Normally I would say that you are right, it's always that way, especially on this forum and
sub-sub forum. It's all slopes of one kind or another. But I am not sure I want to pay
150-350 a bottle for that taste. I am gonna try some of these supposed 16 year old
bourbons, since I read here and there that too much barrel age is not all that good for
bourbon. Lemme tell you, it sure did that label-less bottle good. :D We will have to
see if I get all turned around or not. Certainly keep you posted, lol. As it's friday,
I am gonna make a stop by Buster's on the way home and pick either a Hirsch,
or a pappy or just a plain ol Woodford's and get home and relax. Already got the 4 Roses,
so you'd think I could just drink that. But NOOooo.

Well, Justin, I am an oddball, as you know. I stock WIld Turkey, but not many love that too much.
When it comes down to grabbing a bottle of show-stopping sippin whiskey, you would have a hard
time topping Woodford's Reserve. 4 Roses Single Barrel is fine. Eagle Rare is no slouch. I guess
none are off the beaten path, as you characterize it. But maybe that's right about what you wanted.
If not, reading most of this thread is a great activity.

I guess what I'm looking for is something not found normally in my area. Around here you are pretty well limited to Jack, Jim, Evan, Turkey... Woodford would be top of the shelf in most of my stores. Yep, folks love that basil hayden's. As for me drinking Old Crow would freak me out
with old time memories. I thought that stuff was for bootleggers and souses. But it
wouldn't be the biggest surprise for me this week.

That makes it tough, Justin. If Woodford is top shelf (and it generally is) then most of
the other ones I mentioned would also be prohibitive if even available. I believe the
Flake has better reccos for you in that case. I bet you find Old Forrester and maybe even
that Old Crow, lol. Or next time you come up Memphis Way, stop in at Buster's. You will
go all glassy-eyed in that joint.

As I recall, Booker being a Kentucky Bourbon. They used to have Batch Bourbons that were outstanding and could quickly knock you on your ass. If I recall, they were in the 120/125 proof range and fairly expensive. I don't know if Booker T is from the same company.

you may mean Bookers Noe. Did it come in a wooden crate type box with a plastic slide lid front? If so, it should be around 48 a bottle and is Cask Strength, meaning it has not been watered. This is why it costs more. This is a bourbon that is great for experimenting with. Seeing how water aids in blossoming. Add a few drops, try it. add a few more, try it again. Taste the difference. Add a cube, see how it changes. One of my favorites to get someone new to bourbon to decide how they like to drink it. Anything Cask, or Barrel strength can be done this way. I never recommend over rocks though, the ice will dilute too much. Try this...

First drink upon opening the bottle, pour straight and try it...if you like it, there you go.

If it's too strong, try a quick drizzle of good water. Try again. Still don't like it, add a cube, you should be good from there. You kinda get to be your own blend master.

Someone mentioned above that all bourbon is from Kentucky. this is not entirely true. Taken from Wiki:

Bourbon is an American whiskey, a type of distilled spirit, made primarily from corn (maize) and named for Bourbon County, Kentucky. It has been produced since the 18th century. While it may be made anywhere in the United States, it is strongly associated with the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

On May 4, 1964, the United States Congress recognized Bourbon Whiskey as a "distinctive product of the United States." The Federal Standards of Identity for Distilled Spirits (27 C.F.R. 5.22) state that bourbon must meet these requirements:

* Bourbon must be made of a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn.[1]
* Bourbon must be distilled to no more than 160 (U.S.) proof (80% alcohol by volume).
* Neither coloring nor flavoring may be added.
* Bourbon must be aged in new, charred oak barrels. [1]
* Bourbon must be entered into the barrel at no more than 125 proof (62.5% alcohol by volume).
* Bourbon, like other whiskeys, may be bottled at not less than 80 proof (40% alcohol by volume.)
* Bourbon that meets the above requirements and has been aged for a minimum of two years may (but is not required to) be called Straight Bourbon.[2]
* Straight Bourbon aged for a period less than four years must be labeled with the duration of its aging.
* If an age is stated on the label, it must be the age of the youngest whiskey in the bottle.
* Only whiskey produced in the United States can be called bourbon.[3]

Yep. Stagg is great, although I definitely like the Weller of the BTAC much better. That stuff is amazing. Straight (neat), smooth, no heat at first, amazing flavor, then warming of the torso. Awesome stuff.

People also say bourbon has to come from bourbon county...

Virginia Gentleman is a bourbon.

But of course all the good bourbon comes from Kentucky :noon

I haven't seen ANY bourbon that wasn't from Kentucky, I'm still 99.9% sure no matter what Wikipedia says (really it's not a reliable source, anyone can post in that $hit) that all bourbon MUST have spent at least 2 years in Kentucky. It may say made in "somewhere else" but it must spend at least a few years in the state of Kentucky. Then and again that's just what I've read and learned.

I thought that burbons were made in Kentucky and whiskey in Tennessee but the smokin hot chic in the Jack Daniels trailer told me I was wrong. I think it has something to do with charring the inside of the barrel. It was a few years ago and I was drunk but I think that was it.

I cannot find anything that supports this 100%, but I have to agree that if it's call a Bourbon, it had to be produce in Bourbon, County KY. Everything else, in that category, is either a Rye, Whiskey or Mash. :2

That's my understanding as well. But there are some very good bourbons/whiskeys from other places as well. A.H. Hirsh Special Selection 20yr is distilled and aged in Illinois. Michters used to be distilled in Pennsylvania (not sure where it is now) and Stranahans is a really good micro distillery out of Colorado. While yes, location means alot for aging and water source (like they say about Daniels and Kentucky) nothing can overcome the passion and care that the guys in Kentucky put into their bourbons. The pride they have shows in every sip i.e. Four Roses, Buffalo Trace, Heaven Hill etc...

Been looking for the Stranahans, but not available in Bama (but, we have really moronic people running our ABC board). I have it listed on my iPhone lists of "things to look for", and plan on checking for it in Ft. Lauderdale this week!

Oh, just for clarity, Jack Daniels is Lynchburg, Tennessee. May be the only distillery in a dry county inthe USA!!!

The Wiki does have good references sometimes.

I thought that burbons were made in Kentucky and whiskey in Tennessee but the smokin hot chic in the Jack Daniels trailer told me I was wrong. I think it has something to do with charring the inside of the barrel. It was a few years ago and I was drunk but I think that was it.
Jack Daniels charcoal filters their whiskey, and they don't want to be classified as bourbon anyway, so that is why theirs is called TN Whiskey. I believe (although don't have any references) they use a "bourbon" mash, as in over 51% corn. Whiskey can be made anywhere.

I cannot find anything that supports this 100%, but I have to agree that if it's call a Bourbon, it had to be produce in Bourbon, County KY. Everything else, in that category, is either a Rye, Whiskey or Mash. :2

Probably because it is not true. There are no distilleries in Bourbon County :)

http://www.straightbourbon.com/articles/ccname.html

From my understanding, if it's made in Kentucky and is at least 51% corn, it can be called bourbon. Anything else is just whiskey.

These are the cliffs from the StraighBourbon page about the origin:

"When American pioneers pushed west of the Allegheny Mountains following the Revolution, the first counties they founded covered vast regions. One of these original, huge counties was Bourbon, established in 1785 and named after the French royal family. While this vast county was being carved into many smaller ones, early in the 19th century, many people continued to call the region 'Old Bourbon.'

"Located within 'Old Bourbon' was the principal Ohio River port from which whiskey and other products were shipped to market. 'Old Bourbon' was stenciled on the barrels to indicate their port of origin. 'Old Bourbon' whiskey was different because it was the first corn whiskey most people had ever tasted, and they liked it. In time, 'bourbon' became the name for any corn-based whiskey."

Hope that helps :)

Yeah, reading what I wrote sounds weird, it should read "like Jack Daniels in Tennessee and Kentucky distillers."

I can get Stranahans in Ga but it is pricey, for the cost I'd rather buy BT or Bookers. That being said, it is worth a try, a good (if maybe a bit sharp) bourbon.

Yea I've been wanting to try Stranahans as well, but it's like $45+ here and I can get some fine bourbon for that price like Jefferson's Reserve Very Old.

Well this time the you should have gone with the .1% The article that Wiki referenced was straight from the Government website that had the law listed. Bourbon is defined by law not by opinion.

Whiskey can be made anywhere but bourbon can only come from the US (not just Kentucky). Jim Beam is located in Bullitt County, KY and I don't think we have to argue that Beam, Bookers, Knob Creek etc. are bourbons.

Stanahan's Colorado Whiskey was very tasty. Reminded me more of a Scotch than a bourbon but it was good. But I do agree that for the price I am going to choice something else almost every time. The head dude there is the guy who started Flying Dog Brewery as well.

Yea I heard FD Brewery did the mash and pumped it over, but didn't know the same guy started both. That's my dream. Trying to start a brewpub in a few years, and it would be awesome to start up a distillery at some point.

Bourbon does NOT have to come from Kentucky. If it is labeled "Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey" then it is from Kentucky. If it is from some other state (there are several others that produce bourbon) then it will say "Texas Straight Bourbon Whiskey" or "Virginia Straight Bourbon Whiskey", etc. Kentucky prides itself and markets itself as being "the" producer of bourbon, but they do not have a 100% monopoly on bourbon.

I read here, but never post. but feel this is worth sharing. I got to visit the woodford reserve distillery this past weekend. If you never hve been there make the trip. It was awesome. Fantastic tour. Beautiful area. Very very knowledgeable staff, could talk with them for hours. Also picked up the new masters blend. Its a maple barrel finish in a toasted (not baked) barrel. Its great. hints of maple syrup all over it, but not thick a all. IDK if it justifies the 90 dollar price tag, but its nice to try as a LE type of thing. Pictures will be posted when my gf downloads them from the camera.

i also visited 4 roses while in the area. Wish i could have done all 6 major distillerys. Its amazing the difference in small batch vs mass production. I knew going in the 4 roses wasn't as good (per reviews) but i had never had it. I was deff not for me. they only age their barrels 2 years. its very raw and very fresh. It had a ton of spice to it. Didnt like it. couldn't name the flavor. but not for me.

cant wait to go back and see the rest of the distilleries. luckily the girl is just as excited as I am to go back. Just wish i could bottles the smell of angles share to smell every once in a while.

Oh yeah the woodford masters collections are great! I agree the price tag is a bit high. I wish they were like $30 cheaper.

I have been to almost all of the bourbon distilleries over the past 4 years, since my in-laws moved to Louisville. If you are at all interested in bourbon, these are marvelous places to visit, as you will learn more about the process in an hour there than reading several books on the subject, IMO. Definetly worth the trip!!

I don't know if anyone is looking for this, but I happened to get an email from SV yesterday. They're selling it for the same $90 price-tag. Got a small allotment, so they may be sold out? :sh

Here's a link in case someone was looking for it. LINK (http://www.shoppersvineyard.com/store/pc/WOODFORD-RESERVE-MASTERS-COLLECTION-MAPLE-WOOD-FINISH-BOURBON-WHISKEY-108p13962.htm)

I'm still a bourbon newb, so I'm taking a pass. With my bourbon rediscovery, I've recently purchased and enjoyed Woodford and Bulleit, and have recently had Makers Mark and Willetts (both :tu :tu). Trying to decide what my next purchase would be. I've read a lot of the beginning of the thread, but it's a lot to catch up on!!! :r

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "they only age their barrels 2 years"

Not sure what blend you were sampling, but the Single Barrel is a 10 yr, and the 2009 Mariage has a 19 yr in it.

4 Roses is my favorite right now, love the the Single Barrel.

I've been wanting to try the Maple Wood finished Master series, but 99 a bottle was a bit stiff for me right now.

Yea, maybe their run of the mill cheap stuff. But their more expensive bottlings are solid. I'm trying to find a Mariage. Couldn't afford it when we had it, now I want it. The 2010 LE Barrel Strength is very nice. Not amazing but thoroughly enjoyable.

The Mariage is now discontinued in favor of a new(an recently released) Small Batch LE.
