One of my members knows I like bourbon, and asked me if I had ever heard of the line of Horse Soldier Bourbons. Supposedly, the story is that this is the creation of a group of guys who were Green Berets that went into Afghanistan via horseback shortly after the events of 9/11.
My member asked me about it, and then he did that I should expect a bottle for Christmas. I looked it up on my phone, but it wasn't loading the way I thought it should.
Given our groups thoughts about supportive troops, didn't know if you all had heard about this before or not. And if you did what your thoughts were.
Piece of the Lord be with you.

Here is the link to their story. I know I should not be a skeptic, and I'd like to think that if these guys were scamming, some green beret would have already gone and kicked their asterisk, but...

I have seen it at my local stores, Todd, and heard some of the stories including that their bottles are pressed in molds made from World Trade Center steel. Have not tried it, would if I saw it in a restaurant or bar. You'll have to let us know your thoughts when you receive and open it. A very thoughtful gift for sure.

Well, it got dropped off at suppertime. Done with evening meeting, it is my evening pour. It is the "bronze" label version, the "straight" bourbon, not the "small batch" or the "barrel strength" Interestingly, the tasting notes are fairly close to what I picked up. It was/is very smooth and tasty. I do get the notes of caramel and also hints of fruit.
I enjoyed it very much.

Got word that one of my favorite local spots had an OWA pick out when they opened at 8am yesterday, I went by today hoping there would be more and there were about 30 people in front of me with the same idea. When they opened the line moved in and they handed everybody an Eagle Rare pick, couldn't say no to that but wish it was OWA. I may go in the morning the next few days to see what they have those days, even though the line is just gonna get longer
Before checking out I walked past the case and on the bottom they had a 1792 12 year tucked away for $55, apparently I couldn't say no to that either :D

I'm able to grab Eagle Rare semi-regularly at Binny's. Most of the other places have it too far over MSRP.
Sorry you missed the OWA pick, Ben. They had an OWA at Binny's (non store pick) a few days ago, bought it and traded it on FB for a 14 year 11 month Knob Creek 120 proof store pick today.

Went back this morning on my way home from the office, got there the same time but today there was at least 75 people in front of me. By the time I got to the door the line to get in the store was just an extension of the cash register line, and right in the middle of all that there was a guy handing out Blantons :tu

Planning on picking up a fancy shmancy sample from a local bar's December whiskey calendar today. Other than that I'll probably pull out something nice, I have a few other good samples I got from friends that wouldn't be bad to try out, also have some nice bottles I may open over the next couple days. I'll post what I end up deciding on :al

Good news / Bad news. Good news is the second pour of Whiskey Rick was much better, it opened nicely. The bad news, can't say the same about the second pour of 1792 FP.

Speaking of gifts, an outrageous one showed up on my porch yesterday. It's the oldest bottle of Booker's I have yet to open, but I figured it's a Christmas gift, I need to open it for Christmas. It's outstanding. Cheers and heartfelt thanks to my "Secret Santa".

Did the Noah's Mill for Christmas Eve, solid but the 1920 for Christmas evening was a step above.
Good news out of Kentucky this week that looks like it will allow shipping bourbon to other states...of course Kansas is not one that allows spirits to be shipped but maybe that will change in time. I am sure the first few release of Kentucky only bottlings that ship will go quickly.

I haven't paid more than $69, Gabe, I've lucked into it at stores that don't mark it up much. I'd offer to grab you one if I see one, but not sure if it would make sense with shipping costs of around $15. If I find one at $59 (rather than $69 or higher) again I will grab it. Yours if you want it, if not I never mind having a backup.
These Knob Creek 9 year SiB picks at Binny's have been a steal at $49. So good,,, sure, I prefer the 15 year ones, but those are tougher and tougher to find.

Nice pickups Gabe! I don't care what type of container that 101 is in I love the stuff
Tom how was the C920? One of my groups did a "vote your top 3 of 2020" game and A120 came in as the most common answer, I looked around and realized that I had one sealed bottle and apparently hadn't tried it (I do a bad job of keeping track of what's open). I found a guy with an extra for $75 that I'm picking up today, so I cracked the A120 last night and holy crap that's good. Followed it up with a pour of B519 and they are night and day different bourbons. I might need to see what other ones I have open and do a bigger flight :al

I think that A120 has been my favorite of the 2020 batches, Ben, but I must say C920 was close. Neither touch the C919 for me, but they're all so good.
That B519 just didn't do it for me after trying the higher proof stuff. Had a second B519 that I flipped for an A117 that's pure pepper. Yet I still prefer it to the B519. :r

Nobody drinking this winter? Technically not Bourbon but...This was Monday night our first big snowfall here in Philly area, so I thought it fitting to try this sample of Midwinter Nights Dram I’ve bargained for, and holy sh*t this is the best whiskey I’ve probably ever tasted, I LOVE port wine and the port flavor presents itself on the finish quite perfectly. Thank you so much Tom absolutely incredible! Out of curiosity what’s the proof? I imagine in the 100 ballpark but went down like 80!!

Glad you enjoyed it, Gabe, it's the only finished whiskey I enjoy. The Chapter 7 Verse 5 is 98.6 proof, no wonder it agrees with the human body. :D
From "The Whiskey Wash":
It’s a seasonal release blend of rye whiskies: We’re now up to Act 7, Scene 5. This mash bill is described as a blend of straight ryes, broken down even more as 95% rye, 5% barley malt from MGP, and 80% rye. 20% malted rye from High West Distillery (HWD). They don’t specify the ratio. It’s aged for six years in both Port and French Oak barrels and isn’t chill-filtered or carbon-treated.

I have a hunch that stores are going to be getting one more wave of high age WP10's on the shelf very soon, after that it will be a while before we see them again. If you see any WP10 picks being put out in the next month or two it's worth asking to see if they know the age :tu

Yep, my favorite is a place called Maisano's (https://maisanosfinewine.com/) in the next town over. Every one of his barrel picks that I've had has been great. His Elijah Craig one from about two years ago was around 135 proof and smoother than many 80-90 proof Bourbons I've had. If time travel is ever invented one of the things on my agenda would be to go back and grab about a dozen bottles of it.

$50 kanuckistanian = $39.36 U.S. = mostly taxes.
In the 80's I visited at the Crown Royal Distilleries and a gallon of it equated to $4 bottled and delivered to our local gov controlled stores. the rest is all tax. A single bottle was around $25 and you got 4 bottles from a gallon...= around $96 tax per gallon. They wonder why people are makin their own?

What Is The Difference Between A Store Pick & Regular Shelf? More Age?
Basically the store sends someone to sample barrels; they pick the one that they like the most and have it bottled specifically for the store. Sometimes it's barrel strength, sometimes brought down to a specific proof.
At my B&M it's the owner that goes. He seems to shoot for a variety of mash bills throughout the year and usually has them bottled at barrel strength.

The way I like to describe them (using some assumptions and made up numbers) is, using EC as an example, say a batch of blended shelf Elijah Craig requires 100 barrels to make. The blender knows what the target profile is, so they start dumping barrels and taste it. Maybe they think it needs a little more oak to hit the target profile so they add a few barrels that are higher aged (in EC's case up to 12 years). Maybe then they taste it and it needs a little more sweetness so they dump in a couple barrels they have tasted and know have a sweet note. Maybe they taste a barrel to add and it's got a funky peanut note to it, which does not fit into the target blended profile at all so they don't even add it. These barrels all started as the same whiskey recipe in them but the age and location in the warehouse has changed the bourbon so much and in such a variety of ways that you can't just pull one off the shelf and throw it in a shelf EC bottle, it won't taste like Elijah Craig.
Now, imagine somebody gets to come in and try these single barrels that may or may not have been on their way to being blended. If the chooser likes oak in their bourbon they may pick one that is aged longer, so buying that 12 year bottles is going to taste vastly different than a blend that is only usually made up of 10% 12-year bottles (again, made up numbers). The chooser could also be going for something "a little sweeter than normal EC" and pick the barrel that would have been used to sweeten up the batch, or maybe they are going for something that is in an EC bottle but tastes nothing like any EC you'll buy elsewhere, they're gonna pick that funky one-off
Some distilleries let you have input in the final proof but those are usually smaller ones (ex/ my group is doing a pick at Limestone Branch today and they let you choose between three proofs, I want to say 100 107 and 114). As far as I know Elijah Craig only lets you do 94 proof, but if I'm wrong I'd love to try a sample of a barrel proof pick :dr:dr

This becomes the quest. Finding store(s) where it seems like the "pickers" have similar tastes or palates. I've been lucky enough to find a couple of those and a couple local groups that have been doing barrel picks as well. I'd say I've had about 80% winners with those stores and groups. The one guy who has a connection at Whistlepig just gets some outrageously delicious barrels.

Exactly, taste preference and access. Usually stores have a "pick team" of the same 3-4 managers/employees so figuring out what they like, or what their tasting process is like, is important. Usually you can just ask the liquor manager and they'll talk your ear off about how they pick for 30 minutes :r
Access is a different animal, it's not really talked about but I definitely believe there's a reason certain stores regularly get better barrels from certain distilleries. Tom definitely has the proof when it comes to Whistle Pig :tu

Just picked up Barrel cask strength batch 16. I am thinking I probably shouldn't ever open it based upon what has happened to all the $75 to $100 bottles I posted in the beginning of this thread. If I still had all that Pappy and Hirsh I could probably buy a house.
Doubt I will be able to resist now, just like I couldn't then.

Heard great things about this, didn't feel like going out to buy one the one weekend they were available around here (pretty much everywhere sold out in a day, it was about a month after it landed in some of the other states and was getting great reviews). I finally got around to trying a sample from a friend and... dang. It's gotta be up there with the best ryes I've ever had. The one I tried was 134 proof and had a creamy banana taste to it, I eventually tracked down one that was a little lower proof (131.2 I think) and while this single barrel doesn't have that strong banana profile to it, it's really friggin good as well, I need to stop myself from drinking too much of it
Have you had a chance to try it?

Ran down to the city to pick up a couple bottles I had long ago paid for. A different Tumbling Dice Heavy Rye SiB store pick and a Old Haymarket 7+ year SiB, Both in excess of 117 proof. The TD is 4+ year MGP, and the OH is Heaven Hill.
Then the story got good. Stopped in a corner convenience store heading back to the highway to go home. They probably had 20 total bottles of hard liquor in the place, all behind the secure counter. And one was a Booker's Tommy's batch (17-01). You don't find old Booker's like that very often, right?
Wrong. Today I stopped at some dump liquor store on the way home from an appointment, and found a 18-02 (Backyard BBQ).

Stopped by the liquor store on my way home from the office this morning, they never have good stuff in the case in the mornings but they do sometimes put out some old picks they found in the back. Got lucky today and snagged another bottle of their 150 proof light whiskey, I heard from a good source that once all the high aged MGP bourbon got bought up everybody turned to the lesser desired whiskeys (wheat, light, etc) and bought those up too, mostly brokers who will resell you a barrel for a heavy markup. Future me is going to be glad current me dropped $45 on a backup bottle, it's surprisingly tasty and 13 years old

Isn't Whistlepig a "finished" bourbon, or am I mistaken?
stearns
04-23-2021, 10:59 AM
I believe everything to date from them has been Rye, but they are about to come out with their own bourbon. In terms of the Rye releases, some (like Whistle Pig 12, 15) are always finished, while others (like WP10) are never finished. The expression/label Whistle Pig 10 means that it is A) unfinished rye and B) at least 10 years old. Some stores in the last year or so have been able to get barrels that are much older than 10 years (I've seen up to 17 years), but unless the person picking the barrel took note of the distilled on date from the sample the bottle won't actually tell you what the age is, just that it's "at least 10 years old"

Had a good week. Got an email last Friday that I won the spring raffle at Total Wine for the Old Forester 150. Saturday I stopped at Spec's and grabbed the new Pinhook Tiz Rye 5 year. Monday I picked up the Weller 107. Tuesday I got a call that I had the Elijah Craig 18 year. Wednesday was the EHT Small Batch. And today I got call that I had a allocated bottle of Elmer T. A couple Old Carters, Pappy 10 next to 2017 WLW, there was some 2020 Old Forester Birthday in there. I brought a Willett 6 year bourbon (my first and only Willett) that I think stood up with the M20 and WLW as the best, but it's really hard to tell. Just fun to drink whiskey with whiskey people. This guy is the shining example of "befriend a store owner" and gets first dibs on a lot of cool bottles as they come in at srp

Hello. I saw today that a place in Newport Kentucky called Newberry Bros. Coffee/Prohibition Bourbon Bar is finally reopening their Friday/Saturday in person drinking part of the operation. Two hour visits and reservations required. (They have been EXTREMELY Covid conscious, you might say.) From what our local bourbon chasers (like Theo Cincy) tell me, the selection is unparalleled in this part of the country.

Sounds like a great night, Ben. I've only ever had the 4 year Willett, I am guessing it's just escalating goodness.
Any chance one of the Old Carters was American Batch 4 (139.6 proof)? I still haven't cracked mine, and they're already going for double what I paid for it a few months ago.
Brian, please get a picture of the bourbon list from Newbury Bros. when you go inside. Love to see it. :tu

Unfortunately not, KY Whiskery Batch 1 and Bourbon Batch 6. I've got a bottle of the Bourbon Batch 6 and think it's good not great, if I had realized it was Dickel I probably wouldn't have bothered. I've got a bottle of Bourbon Batch 7 on its way now that they've gone back to MGP for the latest run. I'm trying to convince myself I don't need more of them, too dang expensive, but they're fun. I just got a sample set yesterday from a friend that has American Batch 4 in it (along with a Bourbon, Rye, KY and Bourbon Single Barrel) so I'll let you know when I give that an open :tu

Seemed very forward on the Tennessee flavors and notes. I hear dried fruit - apricot used to describe the flavors but had never really found that myself, I did in this one. The finish is light considering the proof for this.
The Tennessee is speculated to be Dickel so interested to see what you think Tom.

Barrell is too hard to keep up with, I had a sample from an 18 year bottle that was one of the best pours I had last year but I know there's no chance of finding that one so no reason to look. I know they're trying to settle down a little with Stellum and some of the bigger regular releases like Seagrass but I feel like it would take a lot of money and energy to really get into them like some people do. I don't have anything from them and likely won't unless I get to give it a sample first, the few I've tried have ranged from ok to amazing

I don't know what was going on with that barrel but it was not good and so off profile from the typical WP10 or any other single barrels I have tried, fennel and anise and wet wood all the way. Since opening this bottle, it's been hard to drink, the ethanol just obscured the flavor and made it less than enjoyable. I've poured out more than one pour.
First time in a couple/few months, over half the bottle gone and suddenly it's good. Ethanol dialed way back, cherry syrup and banana flavors on the palate. Not outstanding, but certainly enjoyable now.
Traded both my other picks, which are both supposed to be much tastier than this one. I may live to regret it, but life's too short for bourbon regrets.

Very interesting Tom, I passed on a lot of those (and actually got one, long story but I don't expect to ever actually receive it) but the ones I've tried were predominantly ethanol, which is why I never bothered to shell out the $80-90 for one, glad this one is turning around.
Has anybody tried anything fun with this new honey barrel finished trend? I had a sample of the original BM honey (really good but not worth $1k or whatever secondary is asking), got some from a VA distiller (Ragged Branch) and have a sample of the Binny's Starlite Rye Honey barrel coming in from a friend. Typically I'm not big on finishes but something about the honey impact gets me interested. Next weekend a local distillery who puts out a lot of MGP is releasing a wheat whiskey finished in honey, they've done a few 8 year toasted wheat bottles so I'm hoping this will be 8 year as well, looking forward to picking a couple up :dr

I have not seen any that were honey finished around here - but I also did look specifically either.
The SB picks around here went down to 100 proof last year so maybe that was in response to a bit much on the barrel proof.
Went down to the lake for a couple days and stumbled upon a bottle of New Riff that I picked up this week. Have not seen one up in the KC area before so a chance to give it a shot.

Had a very interesting whiskey on Saturday, a local place Leopold Brothers designed and built their own three chamber still, which apparently was popular pre-prohibition but hasn't been used in the last 50 years. They also grew their own rye that's a type that would have been used back then, and tried to replicate how things would have tasted. They hosted an open house (with access to the distiller and the still) for the release after being completely closed for the last year and a half, selling pours/bottles of the three chamber rye and giving free samples of everything else they make (mostly flavored stuff but a few nice bourbons and ryes). The whiskey was definitely worth $15 to try, I didn't bite on the $250 bottle but still really cool nonetheless. Visibly oily, coated your mouth in lavender and honey, some apple in there too, long finish for bottled in bond, if they open again to visitors I'll be going back to try to get another pour

Interested to see what you think James, I picked up a bottle about a month when it came more available in KC ago but have not tried it yet.
Watch around you Greg, I was able to pickup a bottle of OF 1920 here a few weeks ago for less than $50 in KC (Kansas tax is high) from a store that does one day discounts on Fridays. I didn't know about it until I signed up for the news letter.
On more to the list <$50 Four Roses Single Barrell is mostly available and a solid pickup.

Knob Creek picks! Just got back from Vegas, everywhere had a KC pick and they were all the cheapest thing on the menu, $14 for a big pour of 120 proof when other drinks are $25 is a stupid steal, I've never run across one that didn't taste at least "good" if not "great+"
Don't have much to add that others haven't said, if you can get some young MGP (4-5 years) in that price range you won't be disappointed but those are getting to be harder to find, at least without some sort of premium on it.
Love me some Four Roses, I prefer the barrel strength picks but they're getting impossible to find as well (or crazy expensive). The regular 100 proof single barrel is a solid choice though, I tried a couple not too long ago and was really impressed with how different the profiles were, I had always looked past that one but am now convinced it's a really solid pour :tu

In my opinion, yes. Things get deep fast when it comes to the barrel strength picks (they have 10 recipes, and 6 different floors they store on with higher floors typically being higher proof, and each combination of those produces a different profile) but if you can get one for under ~$90 (SRP) then the rest doesn't really matter. On the secondary market they usually start around $120+ and go up to $400+ for the right recipe and proof. I've tried all the recipes a couple times and in general the only thing you could discern between them blind is whether it's high rye ("B" recipes) or low rye ("E" recipes), the rest is all about how that specific single barrel tastes. For comparison, the 100 proof single barrels are all the same recipe (OBSV) and while they come from different floors/tiers, they are all watered down to the same 100 proof

These are the 10 recipes, in general the descriptions are fine but when it comes to single barrels the original mash bill and yeast is only one small part of what influences the final taste profile

I like the small batch select a lot, I always keep one around. It's a blend of 6 of their recipes (a balance of high rye and lower rye recipes) aged 6-7 years. Nice pickup!
FYI - Four roses posts a lot of detail about their offerings on their website: https://fourrosesbourbon.com/bourbon/small-batch-select/

My everyday's include Buffalo Trace store picks ($25), Elijah Craig/Larceny store picks ($35), Early Times Bottled in Bond ($25), regular Knob Creek ($35), Rebel/Ezra store picks ($40). There are probably a few others but those are the ones I keep around off the top of my head

It's decent but unspectacular. It has a really nice caramel apple and pear nose. Unfortunately the nose is better than the taste. It's not bad, just a bit rough. It's a five year age statement; I'd like to try an eight year version when and if available to see how it improves.

At around $40, it's still worth a try. If they started asking premium prices, I'd skip it. As a side note, it was Batch 74 that I had.

Nice, Greg, hope you enjoy it. I haven't had that one, only Four Roses I've had have been the single barrel picks.

I got a cool set in trade today, I had never even seen one of these : "Booker's 2016 Batch Collection", which actually contains four 2015 batches in one giant Booker's box. Traded some nice stuff for it but came out way ahead, and yeah...Booker's is my jam.
