Halfway through my Tyrconnell Single Malt Irish Whisky finished in Port Casks. Went to the boutique liquor store to dabble into the world of single Malt Scotch something I've never had a taste for but as I'm getting older I'm trying new things walked out with this, all I can say is.... WOW!!! I could drink this whole thing in one sitting!! Simply Delicious!!!!!

Gabe - the Quinta Ruban is excellent. Welcome to a new slope. ;) (YNWA)

How did you like the Tyrconnel?

Gabe215
09-08-2014, 05:11 PM
Tyrconnell was excellent!, tried the Connemara like you suggested saw they had it at the bar I was at, got it on the rocks- also awesome, that's actually what I was going out to buy but since I still had some Tyrconnell I went with Scotch, this single malt Scotch/Irish is becoming an expensive habit, a buddy of mine gave me a bottle of Angels Envy Bourbon that I've been hitting up a lot lately which is also very good but not as good as the above mentioned, I really have to be in the mood for Bourbon!

If I were me, I'd be drinking Julian hard cider if my local hadn't stopped carrying it. That was good stuff.

Going to try my hand at hard cider myself next fall. I have 4 apple trees I need to do something with next year. I was going to this past season, but my son got a hold of the carboy I was going to use and rolled it into the cinder block wall on accident. Haven't got around to buying the new carboy yet.

Wasn't cider really popular in the US up until prohibition?

It's definitely worth a try if you enjoy some of the Balvenie's other offerings; the predominant note is vanilla. But I think the 12-year Double Wood has more complexity and depth of flavor. And I'd say the same for the 15-year Single Cask. If the 14-year and the 15-year are sitting side by side, take the 15.

My new favorite beer boys and girls, if you can get it you oughta.

Marshal Brewing El Cucuy (http://marshallbrewing.com/2012/02/el-cucuy/)

I normally do not care for citrusy flavors in beers. I normally do not care for exceedingly heavy dark bitter flavors in beers. That said those would be the dominant characteristics of this beer but they are so refined (the heavy dark bitter flavor is not actually bitter) and paired well that it's a miracle of a tastey bev.

After that glowing review I'm sure you'll hate it

Had Kraken rum on the rocks last night, been seeing a lot of people talking about drinking rum and saw it at my brother in laws and thought why not?, and while it wasn't bad, I'm def not a rum guy and won't be doing that again. When I came home I had Tullamore Dew 10 (aged in 4 different oak barrels) and for $30-$35 I must say this is becoming my go to and smokes most $40-$50 whiskies!! Smooth, Sweet, I need another bottle here's a pic of when I first opened it!

Damn Peter, I love gin but on the rocks!! Never had Barr Hill but it must be very smooth!!

There are lots of gins that are quite tasty on the rocks. For a lot of people, a gin martini is nothing but chilled gin. I prefer the more traditional cocktail. With vermouth or even Japanese sake.

I can't imagine the Barr Hill in a martini or G&T. Juniper and honey are the two primary botanicals. (Not really sure if honey qualifies as a botanical). Very tasty on its own. Almost like an aperitif.

pnoon
01-17-2015, 05:34 PM
So the Barr Hill bottle is kaput.
Moving on to Amador Distillery gin. A bottle gifted to me by my friend and brother Adam (T.G). This gin is quite unique. Golden in color which I assume the from a barrel. The flavor has a very delicate spearmint componenent. Or it could be licorice. I've never been good at identifying favors.

That being said, this is not a gin for mixing but like the Barr Hill it is quite delicious on its own.

Time to start prepping dinner - chicken, pesto, and three cheese pizza on home made dough.

Life is good. :)

Oh, it's good stuff, but not one that you would ever want to just pound down; it benefits from slow appreciation. I used to be able to get it semi-regularly when stationed in Europe, even though it's got the "HTF" label attached to it. But if you put a bottle of it and a bottle of Jameson Gold in front of me and said "choose" I'd probably go with the Gold. It has more nuance to it.
