Who owns Omega and Tag here? Looking to get a new everyday watch. I like a couple Omegas and also see some Tags that have some class. Which brand has more value? I've heard some guys bash Tag for having great marketing but really just a sub par piece/movement.. I don't really know

Tag makes some very good watches, although they are not as "elite" as the marketing machine makes them out to be. Their quartz pieces are really just about the Tag name, but their mechanical watches are definitely high mid-range. Omega is a different class altogether, much higher up than Tag. That said, both are quality units so it's hard to go wrong with either choice.

I agree with all of this. THe only Tag I would be interested in is the 1887. It is their first in-house movement in a long time. I think the quality has degraded since the acquisition by Luis Vuitton. Personal opinion though. At least Omega is still a private brand and I *think* they make all of their own movements.

Anyone know when Omega changed the dial layout of the words in their seamaster lign? What I mean is I've seen models with the word "seamaster" directly under the Omega text, and some models have seamaster towards the bottow of the dial.. Seems like older Seamasters have it on the bottom of the dial and the newer releases have it towards the top. Maybe it depends on the actual model of seamaster??

Omega is not private. It's part of the Swatch group. Not that, that is bad, just wanted to clarify.

Omega for me is a much nicer watch in general. Classy pieces for the price range they are in; always hip. Pretty big manufacture facility too.

My wife has an Omega for her everyday watch, it is a great watch, quality in every way, particularly the band. Her's is metal and very comfortable. Tag autos have a little bit of a bad reputation for reliability, I don't believe I would buy one myself, while I'm trying to get my wife to get me an Omega soon. Just my two cents.

How's that Porsche torch lighter? Porsche Design is generally well made stuff.

In the glass business they say, "If you can't make it good, make it blue." I tend to buy blue as well.

The porsche lighter is relatively new but it does have a few cigar under its belt. Design is solid and fit and finish is nice. The flame is strong and it looks like I will get a nice number of cigars lit on a single fill up (I'm guessing around 8).

I'm not sure it's worth the retail price but I do like it at the lower prices they can found.

Ball's are cool watches. Considered buying one for years. They look well finished inside and out and the Gas Emitting Tubes are really neat. For whatever reason, the brand hasn't taken off in the USA. Their market seems to be more in Asia-Middle East.

Hobby #62 was watches for me, enjoyed that expensive, yet oh so gratifying hobby until I purchased one of my grails. So for me it is down to three, my daily wearer Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean XL, Benarus Raven Vintage, and my beater modded Seiko SKX007. In due time I will flip these and maybe go back to a DOXA, Korsbek, and probably another Seiko MarineMaster 300.

EDIT: For some reason, my picture is HUGE. I'm not sure why.

It's a Sea-Gull homage. I don't really love the idea of homages, but for whatever reason, these have become fairly respected in the watch community. It has a seagull st-25 movement and a beautiful open heart movement. I really do love it.

Love Horween. You should be proud of your craftsmanship. When I was full tilt in my watch collecting I was equally addicted to straps. I have desperately tried to find another version of this leather NATO i purchased for my MM300. The leather was so worn that it changed colors under certain light, positions and oh so soft. I should have never sold it, but I don't own any 20mm watches anymore.

Tissot is very storied old brand based out of Biel. My cousin has a T-Touch titanium for about a decade with no issues. Their limited edition automatic's are actually quite nice and a great value. I've eyed a few over the years when they come around at a good price. If looking at Tissot, I'd check out Certina, Glycine, and Oris. Pretty sure all of the three are also made in Biel as well.

I have no negatives with the Tissot brand at all.

I don't know if this response is past its expiration date or not, but figured I would provide my .2 cents.

Background- Tissot is part of the watch giant Swatch Group. Tissot, Certina, and Hamilton are all brands classified within their mid tear group of offerings. All of the noted brands are very well known across the mainstream watch world and have authorized dealers in almost every major city in the US. This is a bonus when it come to repairs/service. In addition all of the noted brands are respected.

But in all honesty, forget the brand on the dial and just ask yourself these question(s)- what movement do you prefer (auto or quartz). What case size fits your wrist best (38mm, 40mm, 42mm, or larger). What case styling fits your personality (dress or diver). Do you prefer a bracelet (medal), rubber, or a leather strap. And most importantly who is backing the watch when it comes to repairs or service. If this Tissot checks all your boxes so to speak then it's a winner, pull the damn trigger. At any rate If you have some other questions or want suggestions within the Tissot price point hit me up. :) There is a lot of killer micro brands out there with impressive offerings.

Thanks for the response. Im getting married in May and will be wearing a tux. I have a TAG but its brown and dont want to wear it with a black tux. Saw a 42mm black automatic Tissot that looked sharp for a dress watch for around 400 bucks. Just wanted to reaffirm that its a pretty good watch. Thanks again.

Congrats on the wedding. I wish I has the model number on the Tissot to bench it against others, but it sounds like a decent piece. Just for kicks, take a look at the following options. FYI- for a dress watch don't exceed the 42mm case size, especially when in a tux.

Hamilton Valiant (Hamilton is a step above Tissot in the SwatchGroup)
Hamilton Jazzmaster
Seiko Sarb (Great line, phenomenal movements)-(seiyajapan is a great site)
Christopher Ward (if in the US make sure to note this in the google search)

In closing, the $400-$500 range will land you a great dress watch, with the TAG still being a great every day watch.

That's not a bad watch bud. Chronographs are not too common with formal dress watches, but who cares. Buy what YOU want, not what others prefer. I only sport divers, always have and always will. They are just more my style. I personally wear a Omega Planet Ocean for all occasions. The Omega PO is classified as a diver, but can be played in many environments including in a tux. I actually change by straps weekly based on the week ahead. A simple strap change can change the watches appearance more than you can imagine. (Bracelet, Rubber, Nylon, and Leather).

FYI- That Tissot is a quartz, so battery changes will be required. However, quartz movements are accurate. If the Tissot is going to be a second watch, having a quartz may not be a bad thing. Because owning autos will require daily wear, winding, or you will need to place the watch on a winder. And based on how fast/slow the watch is running you will need to adjust the time accordingly.

Good luck. Once you narrow it down let us know what you purchased by posting a pic.

I have had my two invictas now and had a chance to wear both. I am sure most everyone saw the pics of the one I bought which is a two tone gold and silver 47 mm Pro Diver, and the one I was bombed by Mark (Conch Republican) which is a silver Pro Diver at 39 or 40 mms. I love them both so far. I would also say that the one Mark sent me seems to glow better at night than the one I bought. The magnification window is a plus for me on the invictas as I couldn't see the date on the old watch I was wearing that doesn't have this feature.

nah, they both came in on the 9th. I wore the bigger one for a couple days and switched to the smaller one. I figured the bigger one would be more of a dress watch cause it's silver and gold plus big, and the smaller one would be better to wear at work since it is smaller and will probably tend to not get hung up on stuff while I am crawling around inside wrecked cars and whatnot. But maybe I am over analytical.

Luminox field chronograph in a jewelry store today. Lightly used and was a trade-in. A little bigger style than I like, but the price seems right - they're asking $400? Oiled,up,and shined up by the watch guys at their main store. Has original box and paperwork. Any inputs on this watch would be appreciated. I'm not a big collector.

Retail new is in the range of $650. What is the range to expect for a "gently" used watch (ie 50%, 25%, ???)? Bonus is it was checked out by the jewelry store.

Any comments on Luminox in general would be appreciated.

I've had a luminox for years, it's one with the black pvd coated steel bracelet (USAF Stealth something or other). It's sitting in my display case needing a new battery. I like it a lot, just keep in mind that there is a limited life span on the tritium inserts, they will dull and eventually stop glowing.

Figure if the retail is $650, you should be able to buy new at 20% off = $520 and used should be 50% value at $325. Does the jewelry shop warranty the watch? If not, who cares if was "checked out"?

50% off for used sounds a little high for me. Not unrealistic, but probably not for very good-excellent condition watches. I'm with you on the "checked out" noise.

It's a good shop. They've taken good care of a few other watches. I wouldn't expect them to honor a manufacturers warranty. You're right - "checked out" would be noise to me too at a shop I don't know. But I trust them. Appreciate the input on used price as % of new retail. 50% off seemed a little too optimistic to me as well, but I have no knowledge of watch aftermarket. And I know nothing about the brand. Took another look at the shop and the face is just too big for me.

Heck, there's a lot of new watches going for near 50% off and this watch is not a tight distribution brand like Rolex, so prices drop like rain from a cloud once they are used.

Picked this up recently, an Omega X-33. This is the 2nd generation and very difficult to find. One of the rarer Omegas made. Titanium case and band. Well finished with lots of detail. I will replace the bezel (looks more scuffed in this picture than it does in person) once my IWC return from servicing. It feels substantial and like nothing all at the same time.

Very few have seen one in person. Draws lines in the sand for watch collectors. I think this will continue to rise in value and is a great collector's watch.

Indeed but it is a hobby you can enjoy everyday, all day. My watches are all funded by my strap sales. My Zelos Bronze Helmsman should be here tomorrow. :tu

I dropped my Armida A7 on the asphalt yesterday. Scratched up the case pretty bad but at least it was one of my less expensive watches. And the sapphire remains perfect.

Agree with you on the sizing of watches these days. The trend is going back down in size a little, but it'll be a while before the norm is back to around 40mm.

I am in Singapore right now and Patek dealers are every 100 yards. Would like to pick up some kind of watch before I leave, but not sure what. I am leaning towards the new IWC Aquatimer in a bracelet with silver dial. The reduced the size to 42 mm (non-chrono) which I think looks better than the previous model. I have plenty of time to shop around, but that is the one that's strikes my eye the most.

A friend wants me to buy him a Rolex Submariner with green dial. Best watch prices by far out here, especially on Rolex. He does not care about box or papers.

That's comes out to about $6800 USD for the green bezel Rolex. There's a new submariner model with a polished ceramic bezel that is really hot. I've seen a few people wearing them. Kind of like it better than the pepsi style one.

I'm a huge Patek fan. I'd never be able to actually OWN one, but their designs are striking.

If I were me, I'd need a smaller format to fit under the suit coat, though. And I'd go for older vintage Patek watches than anything else. They were more... "simple," which is kind of an oxymoron when talking about time-keepers.

I own one of holy grails of Military issue watches; 2nd gen Omega X-33. I am having it overhauled by Omega right now. These were only sold to Military in USA and one of Omega's rarest watches (known as the Mars watch).

Not sure you buddy's budget, but I had planned on selling it once it comes back from them. He'll be hard pressed to find this watch in perfect certified condition anywhere... I want to get about $2600 which is quite fair.

I'm a huge Patek fan. I'd never be able to actually OWN one, but their designs are striking.

I walked by a used watch store today at City Hall stop in Singapore (some good indian restaurants in the food mall) and they must've had 20+ Patek's in the window. Aquanaut, Nautilus, complications, you name it. I kind of kicked myself for not buying the Aquanaut over my IWC. At the time they were similarly priced, but fast forward 15 years the Patek would've increase 3x as much as the cost. The IWC is worth about 1.25 what I paid, but I could've owned a Patek!

Rolex's, this one store had about 150+ on display from current models and on; all pre owned. That is just one store and not in a fancy area either.

looking to pick up a budget watch in the $120-$150 price range. Something around 40mm because I have a small wrist. I have my eye on a PAM homage by Jackson Tse or a similar maker with a Seagull movement, a Seiko or an Orient.

I think I could find a style that would make me happy with either of my choices but what do you guys think would be the best choice as far as, accuracy (mechanical) and durability? This would be an everyday watch.

I'm aware that I'd probably have to buy a decent replacement strap for the PAM so I've factored in the cost of that. Would sapphire glass be a must have upgrade?

this isn't bad. There's something about the Seiko diver watches that just doesn't do it for me. I know they are decent watches for the money. I'm wondering how the Orient will stack up and if the PAM homages are even remotely comparable for durability and accuracy. The latter might be out of the running simply because the 40mm versions all seem to be cheap looking.

That X-33 is a sexy beast though. I really want a Rolex GMT-II, but can't justify the price tag. The Steinhart Ocean 44 is pretty nice without looking like a Rolex homage like their 42mm GMT.

I just the Omega back from Omega Switzerland and they refinished watch. I really love the new Rolex (I think it is GMT as well) with polished ceramic bezel. It look like engraved bezel. I was telling a friend about it in US as this is the new hot watch in Singapore. Did not see on the Rolex site?? Same style watch as the blue and black bezel, but with a polished ceramic bezel. Very hot...

I want to sell or trade in the X-33 on that Rolex or the new IWC Aquatimer. Both I thought were the two newest cool watches that weren't over sized or way too expensive like Blancpain I've seen recently.

Anyone know much about problems with invicta metal watch bands? My big one I bought a while back is kinda hinky on one side. The six o clock side where it fits up to the case seems sloppy and there is a gap between the band and case, the other side isn't like that.

That's neat. Eterna is an excellent value brand that's pretty popular in Switzerland. I believe they are made in Biel where our machine shop is.

For this one? Trade value is about the same, bracelets and rubber strap included with mine and the Orient, pretty much same sizes, Orient is just a nicer watch, what would you do?

I'd do the trade, but I'm trying to down size my watch quantity somewhat, so I might be projecting a bit. The orient is a nice looking watch, just a little bit nicer than the Seiko but pretty close in my book.
