Just had a VSA Divemaster 500M arrive. Man what a deal on the price vs quality scale. Grabbed the orange dial on ss braclet in quartz. I may go ahead and pay the extra bucks for an auto version next.
Feels and looks like a tank plus a very comfortable braclet. Think I've got a keeper.
**Sorry- camera is out of commission so pic was pilfered from the net.

Nixon may not be the fanciest watch on the market, or the best -- but I can tell you they're a great watch for the price. Up until I bought this Seiko Black Monster, ALL I've owned are Nixon's. Literally. Every watch.
This is the last Nixon that I owned, it is "The Player", I got it for my birthday back in 2008.

keeping a watch in a humidor will do wonders for its long life of service... I wonder how accurate the hydrometer is? Or any hydrometer actually?
I am quite suprised Habanos has licensed logos for a co-branded watch? How many would kill to have a Cohiba inspired Rolex/Breitling or something? New dial, hands and engrave something on the swing mass... $$$

Looking at a watch for my girlfriend this weekend. I'll check around Biel first, then Zurich on Saturday to see if I can beat up the price some. I am not looking for anything over the top. I have one of her watches to be service right now.
I like the Certina Quartz pilot watches, Mido, or the Swatch Automatic. It has to be a watch they I could wear too :-) There are some antique manuals that our watchsmith may have, but he is battling the flu and I have not been by.

DO NOT use these cloths unless you know what you are doing. This is not your normal polising cloth and can make parts too shiny. If you have brushed links or parts of links, using cape cod will destroy that contrast.
One of the best ways is like Moses describes. Just soap and an old toothbrush. You don't want to scratch anything.
Another method is to put the bracelet in a freezer ziploc bag and spray in a good amount of WD40. Let this sit for a couple hours then come back and rinse under water.

Along with Palmolive, it's easier on soft hands. Actually, it's to prevent any temperature based reactions to the watch. This is to say, don't pour boiling water or dip it into ice water...

Darrell, as jeweler friend of mine taught me and he's the one responsible for my watch bend, simply take a little bowl, say a Chinese rice bowl, pour some glass cleaner into it, enough to cover the watch band when folded into bowl, and let sit for about 30 minutes. Then rinse under water and wipe clean. Been doing it for years now. I just make sure that glass cleaner does not come in contact with the seals (watch back) and wipe that separately. I also come by and shake the watch in the bowl, gently from side to side, a couple of times while its sitting in the bowl (Every 10 minutes, let's say, of that 30 minute bath).

My first day of watch shopping did not go so well. My girl wants a Swatch and I found a cool one that is a chrono with red croc style strap and 5 or 6 small gems on the dial. There conservative and cool at 150 CHF. I also looked at Tissot and Certina.
I am going by our watchsmith today and maybe he has something laying around? I don't want to spend more 500 CHF. Today I am headed to Zurich and will check out additional watch stores.

I love watches and of my dozen or so my faves are my Rolex Submariner 2 tone w/ blue face and bezel (it's pretty much my daily piece) I also have a Breitling Datora SS w/ white face (a nice summertime watch. Looks great with a tan and white clothing) Those two are my best watches and most of the other stuff I own are funky pieces that I wear for special occasions. The Hamilton "Ventura" is a cool watch from the late 50's that got re-issued a number of years ago and made popular by the "Men in Black" movie (it was part of the official "uniform) It's a cool formal piece as it is unique yet understated.
http://www.stanswatchweb.co.uk/assets/images/Dscn0031.jpg
One watch I like to wear at night is the "Pimp"... yeah, the name is awful, but it's a cool watch to wear once in a blue moon... It actually is done with blue LEDs that light up to display the time like an abacus. Every two minutes it's does a cool "Whirlpool" cycle of all the LEDs and freaks some people out. It looks more like something out of a sci-fi movie.
http://www.uncrate.com/men/images/pimp-watch.jpg
They (and dozens of other unconventional watches are sold at www.tokyoflash.com)
You can never go wrong with a nice old vintage LED. I found a mint 1973 Pulsar P3100 through a watch forum about 10 years ago and it is a ton of fun to wear. Very "retro"
http://crazywatches.w.interia.pl/photo/led/pulsar_led_p3_1.jpg
Kenneth Cole make a few nice inexpensive yet very elegant pieces and the new high-end Citizen watches are gorgeous with amazing movements and fantastic contstruction.
I have a lot of friends who worship TAG and they've never been my cup of tea. Omegas are awesome and Tissot make some nice ones too.
Then there are dozens of ultra high-end watches that I (like most mere mortals) can only dream about.
Fakes? Well, that exactly what they are... it's better to wear a $300 Seiko than a $300 copy of a $20,000 watch. That's my opinion anyhow.

The Bentley series looks like a fake Breitling series.
The Navitimer or Chronomat are the two lines that really say Breitling. The airfield that Brietling elludes to in their ads is in Grenchen. There's a small plane on one of their factory roof.
Brietling does a good job with two tone watches and (although not big fan of the marque) make the best gold watch. A chronomat in 18K gold with blue dial is as flashy as watch can get without looking corny.

DO NOT use super glue. The fumes have been known to gum up the movements of watches and cause them not to run.
The better option is a contact cement that does not have those fumes. Or better yet, look at Jules Borel or Otto Frei for watch glues. Again do not use super glue, it can and will mess up your watch.
thanks for the tip, just regular contact cement from the hardware store? I dont want to spend a lot of money on fixing this because the watch was only $60

I did this because I used this picture on a watch forum as well. Unscrupulous people scour watch forums and use your pictures in their fake e-bay auctions. If they don't have a valid editon # it makes it harder for them to sell their fakes.

Very nice. I like Omega out of the big brands. Their manufactury really looks like one with smoke stacks and all. It's more centralized to one compound than Breitling or Rolex is and the use the grey and red accents through out. The bus stop in front is named "Omega" too. Our shop is down the street from Omega.

Outside of the Timex/Casio class of watches that I keep when doing yard work or other work that would damage a nice watch, my daily wear watch is a Citizen Eco-Drive in stainless. I also have several Seiko automatics that I have bought over time and when my father died, I inherited a couple of Rolex Oyster watches and a gold Hamilton that was my grandfather's. Not really a collector but I got the Seikos really inexpensive from Overstock.com believe it or not and I have always preferred Citizen to Seiko and this current one was a Christmas gift from my wife to replace one that had been stolen during a house break. Not a fancy collection but good trust worthy watches.

Quartz movement, although this is the first one I have seen with such chrono precision.

Greg, the 67 is the one with the SS brecelet. SNDA65 is the one with the black canvass band. If he is planning on switching it out there is no need to pay extra. :02

They are two very different models. The 65 model is with alarm if I am not mistaken. 67 is a chrono, and comes in various bracelet options, SS is one of them.
Wolfgang

I thought the same thing but unfortunately the 65 only looks like it has an alarm but it is actually a 12 hour timer (kinda lame if you ask me) had it been an alarm I would have been thrilled. I will look at the 67 again I didn't look at the 6 position chrono dial.

I don't want to argue, but take a look at the two. Not only they are different movements, one is a chrono and the other is an alarm, but even HANDS are very different in shape. Believe what you will, though, I don't have a dog in the race...

SNDA69 is also same model? Looking at specs for all 3, they seem to be same watch, although looks like 69 has been discontinued at this point. I see someone online selling the 67 for $120 in SS, that's a great buy IMO and one can easily find a great leather strap in the aftermarket: http://www.globalwatchband.com/

I had a Seiko Chrono Quartz in late 80's that was quite precise. If you look at some of the Quartz Chrono's coming out, they are more apt to put mutliple timers on one pole than you'd expect at that price point.

There are a TON of aftermarket selections for bracelet and leather straps for watches. NEVER count out a watch based on it's strap. There is also a really nice custom market which can make the leather straps to your wants.

Agree! You don't have to get an "Omega" labelled strap, but Omega deployment clasps are out there if you really want it to look OEM. Hirsch is a very popular brand of leather straps.

The watch i bought (pictured above) needs a new strap. Cant stand the drab green.
Its 23mm wide. I was thinking about buying something stainless that is 24mm wide and filing the ends down. I have heard of people doing that. Does anybody have experience filing down bracelet ends to fit odd lug widths?

Depends how the pins or screws are fabricated on the bracelet and whether end links are being used.
Have a bracelet looking good is really dependent on the end links or the case. Big gaps around the lugs makes the bracelet look like an afterthought.
Many smaller watch manufacturers in CH use a braclet factory and just machine the end links and/ the button on the clasp. The tooling to create each unique piece on a bracelet may not be worth it on a tight price point or limited manufacture.

Quick update. As I let my Chrono run then stop and reset it the 1/20th and second hands start to inch their way backwards. I dont know if this is normal or not.
Shall I return it or live with it?

That is an issue and will have to be worked on by an horologist. Shouldn't be expensive unless the watch is used and needs a service.

The one i posted a couple days ago that i just got is working fantastically, retails for about 425.00 but can be had for around 200.00. No bad for something that winds 3 and holds 18 more.
if you want a single I cannot help you. I say hit watchuseek.com and research. theres tons of info on there regarding winders! I heard people liked the Swiss legend ones and that they were super cheap. also, jomashop.com house-brand winder is decent too from what a coupel people have told me,.

If you look hard enough and can make a decision immediately, I think you could get 30-40% off. Look towards Singapore retailers and LNIB with a just stamped warranty.

I think I got an instant ~17% off my SMP Chronograph. You might be able to get a bigger discount somewhere else but remember that you will not get any Omega warranty unless you buy from an authorized retailer.

You'll pay top dollar too. Best place to buy a watch is from an respected online dealer. It does not matter where they are located, but the best deals are in Malaysia or Signapore. As long as you know the reference number of the watch, you can post a "watch wanted" ad on a watch forum.
There are many US based grey market and LNIB watch dealers online. Virtually all of them provide a stamped manufacturer warranty or are at least clear in their postings.

I am trying that but since i pretty much wear it 24/7 I would've thought it'd been good. Either way I will try that as it's the cheapest fix :) and it says that "under normal conditions, your eco-drive watch will never need a battery" or something to that effect.
I know it's Eco drive but there must be some sort of battery for electric storage (capacitor possibly?) during no light situations.

Normally you can get 15-20% off depending on where you go. some give 22-23% off.
The best B&M place to get a discount will be a mom & pop jeweler.... of course, they'd have to have the watch you want obviously. A woman tried to sell me a Maurice Lacroix I had my eye on for 40% off which was about 200.00 lower than you can get one for on the cheapest place on the web.

Same here; too big for my wrist. They are nice looking, but I think they could become cliche like Breitling did in late 90's and early 2000's. Panerai are very stylised and it's up to the consumer to decide if that style will keep them coming back. They do a nice job with detailing the movement.

Agreed! I love their history, but doubt that most folks that buy them know or even care about the watch's history. I think that they are very stylish, but I question whether they will last the trendy popularity.

That watch winder sounds real basic. If you are rotating the two watches regularly, it will be fine. If it is for two watches that will sit there for days on the winder, I might consider one that won't "over wind" the watch. Usually that will be listed as a feature.
I have heard a lot of no-so-good reviews of that winder, basically from what I have read it does not last long and is loud. I don't personally own it but I would look for something a little nicer. I have read good reviews about the Brookstone winders and they are relatively inexpensive.

Thats a nice B, S15! I have 2 myself, a SuperOcean that was a wedding gift from my wife, and Navitimer that was such a good deal I couldn't pass it up. I also have a Tag F1 Chrono with an orange face, A Tissot T-Touch, Luminox F117, and more G-Shocks than I can count.
Not what you would call dress watches, mostly dive/tool rugged man watches :banger
